  1. The thread on burning coal got me to thinking. By now you should all know that is dangerous. My house was built in 1886, it is a small 2 story with a 12 12 pitch roof so there is a good size attic. It is getting real close to time to replace the roof. Right now the only thing still using the chimney is the gas hot water heater in the basement. That water heater is around 25 years old so I am thinking of replacing it with a direct vent type so that nothing is using the chimney. I would like to then take down the chimney so that the new roof can cover the old chimney hole in the peak of the roof. My question is; In these old houses did they use the chimney as a structural member? Or can I just take it down and only have to do some wall and floor patching. It sure would be nice to get that space back in the kitchen and the hall where you have to turn sideways to squeeze past the chimney and it is impossible to get a box spring or anything else with a dimension of more than 20 inches into the bedroom at the end of the hall. That eliminates most dressers and beds. with the chimney gone it will be a 40 inch wide hall and room to swing the corner with even a king size box spring. Anyone ever do a chimneyectomy on an old house?
  2. Twas the night before Christmas when all through the garages Not a motorcycle was rumbling, except for Santa Claus' The leather was hung in the closet with care In hopes that nice weather, soon would be there Our bikes were all nestled snug in their covers With visions of blacktop and burning up rubber With momma in her bandana and I in my skull cap We had settled down for a long winters nap When:Venture: out on the lawn, arose such a rumble I sprang fron the bed as I started to grumble When what to my wondering eyes should appear Was a pack of motorcycles, with riders and gear, With one old driver so lively and quick I knew in amoment it must be biker St. Nick He was dressed alll in leather, from from his head to his foot His clothes were all tarnished with bugs and road soot A bundle of chrome he had flung on his back Down the chimney he came, carrying a big red sack He spoke not a word but went straight to his work As he filled all the riding boots, then turned with a jerk, And laying a finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod,up the chimney he rose He sprang to his motorcycle,to his team gave a sign As they cracked there throttles and got into line, Now Honda,Now Harley,Now Triumph, and Indian On Kawi,On Suzuki,On Yamaha Venture and Victory, But I heard him exclaim as he roared out of sight Keep the rubber side down and have a good ride Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPLY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY VENTURE RIDER MENBERS
  3. I am looking to get a direct vent type gas hot water heater. Most likely a 50 gallon. Does anyone here know what brands or features I should look for, or steer clear of? This is kind of what I am looking for. My house needs a new roof and the 30 year old gas hot water heater is the only thing using the chimney, so if I get a direct vent water heater then I can have the crumbling chimney taken down to below the roof line at the time they do the roof and save the cost of rebuilding the chimney or later patching the new roof. I am wide open for comments, suggestions or even snide remarks.
  4. SC Star Touring chapters is having a Meet&Greet 3/27 in the Greenville area. I am looking for a one night (Saturday) motel stay for a few friends somewhere around Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Bat Cave NC. (Prefere motel over cabin.) Bike friendly, reasonable cost,,,, and maybe a bar/grill in close walking distance. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike G in SC
  5. My wife and I are riding to Chimney Rock memorial day weekend. We will be staying in Chimney Rock friday and saturday night. Are there any sights we should try to see while there. Thanks.
  6. For the Asheville ride on Thursday, Randy said he'll lead us up to Chimney rock. If you'd like to go up let us know. If you don't wish to go up we'll need to know that too. (Oh by up I mean up on top of chimney rock.) I don't want folks to be sitting around with no idea what to do next. Here's the link to the park so you can get an idea of what's there. http://www.chimneyrockpark.com/ I haven't gotten a number on how many will be there that week. Some won't be there till thursday or friday. I know that sleeperhawk and the mechanic might not be there till sat. Mother is coming down from Canada with his wifey and he said something about 4 so not sure who else is coming with him. Can't wait to see you all there. This will be more laid back then some of the other events. I'm thinking that we can meet over at the super8 in black mountain to get everyone together on thursday. Probably around 8 maybe a bit later like 9 I'm not sure what time folks are coming in the night before. Then we can eat on the road for lunch. I'm still planning on going to saluda as well. Just have to see what sort of interest we have for any of these rides. I do know that cinderella isn't coming. I wish they could it would have been great seeing them again, but I understand how stuff gets in the way. Margaret
