  1. Unfortunately we didn't have time to ride Needles Hwy. I did that on a previous trip and it was a nice ride also. Dennis
  2. We spent the day riding through the Black Hills area. We started out by riding through Custer State park. We had a great time there and saw huge buffalo herds. The were blocking the road at one point and we had to weave in and out of them standing on the roadway. A rather daunting task with a big bull standing 5 feet from you as you went by. We also encountered the wild (if you call them that) burros and had a great time feeding them apples. My wife remembered them from the last time through the park and this time she was prepared. She's been collecting apples off of the breakfast bars for the last few days. In addition we saw a few antelope. From there we went back by Mt. Rushmore and then rode up to Sturgis to get a t-shirt and to say we'd been there and then returned to Hill City via Spearfish Canyon. That's a nice ride. We drop my wife at the Rapid City airport on our way out of the area in the morning and then we break for home. Should be there by Sunday. Photos are posted at: www.traynorphoto.com/day12 SPOT Track: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 It's been a great 2 weeks. Dennis
  3. Dave, we had a good day today. We head east tomorrow and we'll be running I90 to I35 when we turn south into Iowa. We hope to be home by mid-day Sunday. Dennis
  4. Our trip continued today with a ride from Estes Park to Hill City SD. We took 34 down to Greeley and then picked up US85 north through Cheyenne and Lusk WY. We stopped in Lusk for lunch. I must say that the area of north of Cheyenne is very sparce of people and signs of life. You might ride for 20 miles and not have a curve to deal with. Things got more interesting as we approached Custer SD. We didin't take many photos today but I've loaded some of what Valerie did shoot to the web at www.traynorphoto.com/day11 Real unique naming strategy I have going isn't it? SPOT track: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 Tomorrow we're just going to tour around the Black Hills for the day. We may ride through Spearfish Canyon and stop by Sturgis to see if anything is going on yet. We turn east and head for home on Friday. Dennis
  5. We're using two cameras. Most of them are shot from the back of the bike by with a Canon SD870IS (8 megapixel) and when we stop I pull out the SLR which is a Canon 5D Mark II (21 megapixel). But viewing the images on the web I can't tell much difference. Dennis
  6. We rode from Frisco through the I70 tunnel to US 40 and on through Rocky Mountain National Park today. It was a mostly overcast day. There was some paving going on in the park which delayed us about 30 minutes and we had to ride on hard packed dirt and gravel for a few miles. Wasn't a big deal. At the west park entrance we saw a group of people staring into the woods so we did too and saw a huge moose. We made it to Estes Park without getting wet. Photos are here: www.traynorphoto.com/day10 SPOT track: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 We're headed to Hill City SD tomorrow. Dennis
  7. Yes, Bubba Gumps was good. We got to sit on the back deck with a view of the ski runs. We rode through Rocky Mtn NP today. I'll post photos later. Dennis
  8. We're still riding through Colorado and today we rode from Carbondale to Frisco and in the process we went over Independence Pass. Wow! It equalled the "Million Dollar Highway" in beauty and in my opinion was a bit more technical to ride do the more narrow roadway and tighter turns. Everyone should put this ride on their must ride list. To see photos go to: www.traynorphoto.com/day9 For photos of Montrose to Carbondale: www.traynorphoto.com/day8 For our spot track: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 Dennis
  9. Unfortunately we didn't. We planned to but it started to rain right after we arrived in Durango. I called the Bar D to inquire about reservations and learned that it was open air seating but it would be covered and the temperature at dinner time would be in the low 50's. We just ate in town. Dennis
  10. We rode through the Montana and Wyoming areas 3 years ago. Not this time. Dennis
  11. Yeah, we've got a chase truck. It's driven by a friend that doesn't ride. It's a great way to travel. The only thing loaded on the bike is rain suits an snacks. Everything else is in the truck. Dennis
  12. Incredible is all I can say. We rode 550 from Durango to Montrose and passed through Silverton and Ouray with a side trip to Telluride. For me this ride ranks right up there with the "Going to the Sun" road in Glacier, maybe better. The elevation rose to a little over 11,000 feet. Everyone needs to go over this road at least once. I've placed some of the day's photos on my web site and they can be seen at www.traynorphoto.com/day7 Dennis
  13. My last tank full which I used riding the "Million Dollar Highway" from Durango through Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and on to Montrose averaged 40 mpg. It was all fairly slow, less than 50 mph and I was in 3rd and 4th gear most of the time. Of course half of the time I was coasting down hill. Dennis
  14. Wish you were here too Eck. Need someone to carry extra gas for me. However, with my last tank I got 31 mpg. Dennis
  15. Thanks for info Seaking. Here's a little more info. The Harley and the Tour Deluxe had no fairing. The Tour Deluxe windshield had been cut down several inches. The TD would always use between .3 and .5 gallons less depending on how many miles we ran on the tank. I was the lead bike all the way and they didn follow closely. Probably 100 yards or more between each bike. Also, my speedohealer has a correction factor of about 7%. Therefore, those without corrected odometer are probably seeing 5% to 7% less than measured. When I get above 65 I really see the mileage drop. Dennis
  16. I'm currently in Albuquerque and after riding 1425 miles with 3 other bikes my bike's gas mileage sucks. I'm riding with a Harley Heritage Classic, a Goldwing, and a 2007 Tour Deluxe. Using a speedohealer calibrated speedometer/odometer I have only achieved more than 30 mpg on two tanks of gas. Most are in the 26 to 27 range with one as low as 24. The tour deluxe is doing slightly better. We've been hitting reserve at about 120 miles. Whenever I put in 4.3 gallons the Tour deluxe uses 3.9 and the wing about 3.3. The Harley is usually pretty close to the wing. We've been running a pretty consistent 70 mph with cruise control. The two tanks that were above 30 mpg were in a slower part of the ride. The bike runs fine and the carbs were recently synched. Is anyone else seeing this kind of mileage and what should I check when I get home. I could have driven the car and used less gas. Dennis
  17. I snapped a photo of my temperature gauge today while riding through Oklahoma in 95 degree temps. We were cruising at about 70 mph and it stayed right there. If I got stuck in traffic it would climb to around 220. Dennis
  18. The right gauge is a Baron's tach monted to the brake master cylinder and the next gauge to the left is a water temp gauge. The lower vents are Yamaha Star accessories. Dennis
  19. I stopped by Cycle Gadgets.com today while passing through Eureka Springs and I picked up a RAM mount for my SPOT unit so now I consider my handlebars FULL. Don't you agree? Dennis
  20. Dave, I would caution you to try to remove the wire without cutting if you can. I did. After installing the full friction plate I was not satisfied with the much reduced friction zone and since I still had the wire intact I was able to reinstall it along with the 1/2 disc and wave washer along with the heavier spring. As Goose told me on the phone it really is a fairly simple task work on the clutch. Dennis
  21. We're leaving Sunday for a 2 week ride through MO, AR, OK, TX, NM, CO, WY, SD, IA, IL, IN, & KY. I'll be travelling with 4 other bikes so if you see a group of bikes with a Venture, Tour Deluxe, Gold Wing, and 2 Harleys go by give a wave or shout out to us. I'll be carrying a SPOT unit so if you care you can follow our progress at http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 It should map a new point on the map every 10 to 20 minutes. Dennis
  22. Yes, it's adjustable but with it all the way back it is still in the way. Dennis
  23. Following up, I couldn't get used to the very narrow friction zone so I re-installed the 1/2 disc and wave washer with the heavier spring and all is well again. Dennis
  24. I thought I would follow-up with more impressions on the Mustang seat. Overall I'm satisfied with it. It is a bit harder than the pillow tops and that's OK. One thing I discovered by accident is that for me, the seat is more comfortable without the backrest. Being that I fill up the whole seat, I found that without the backrest I sat further back whick provided a bit more support under my legs and was more comfortable. The backrest causes me to move about an inch forward and it really changes the comfort level. While I liked the backrest, I like the seat better without it. Dennis
  25. Sorry to hear about your mishap. Is that type of road condition typical in TX, NM and CO? Heading that way next week. Dennis
