It does take some getting used to. I didn't have too much trouble adjusting to the frame mount while moving at normal speeds, corners, curves, highway etc. I did, and still do have some problem in parking lots and around gas pumps. I point the bars where I want to go and the bike just looks like it going to continue on the path that the fairing is pointed. It ultimately comes around. I'm sure it is something I'll get used to. Since Eck asked, I thought I would post my initial observations on my new Goldwing compared to the RSV. With the crappy weather we've had this week I've only been able to put about 180 miles on it. First, these bikes are different with good and bad attributes for each. The Wing is an easier bike to ride. With the greater engine torque starts are effortless and you don't have to shift as frequently. I rarely let the RSV get below 2500 RPMs and the Wing rarely gets over 2500. The Wing has incredible acceleration and I've been good during the break-in period. The Wing feels lighter, more nimble, and is easier to get off the side stand. Slow speed handling is better. The RSV has a better ride. It is smoother going over bridge transitions and road defects. The wing translates a lot of these bumps and vibrations through the handlebars. The RSV has better wind protection. I get significant head buffeting on the wing and that is a dissapointment. I've got to work on that. The brakes on the Wing are better. They are linked so you get some rear brake with the front and some front with the rear. The riding position is more relaxed on the RSV, of course we all knew that. I do prefer the floor boards and heel/toe shifter. For height challenged individuals like myself, the Wing sits a little lower and I can get my feet planted better for parking lot manuevers. The dash layout and instrumentation on the Wing is better and the audio controls are more intuitive. The Wing is quieter with less mechanical noise between your legs. I think the RSV is easier to work on. Everything is covered on the Wing. I'm sure I'll learn how to get under the covers. Probably this weekend when I install my GPS and a 12V outlet (which should have been standard on the bike). As I stated earlier, these bikes are different. I wish I could combine the features of both and create the perfect bike. The choice of one over the other is a series of compromises. On the Wing I compromised leg comfort. Your mileage may vary. Resonable miles per hour on trip
Midrsv replied to Sylvester's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Overall you will probably average 55. On the long stretches across the mid section of the country you'll do better than that. We usually run around 70 to 75 mph with a 10 to 15 minute stop every 100 to 120 miles with a decent break for lunch. Once you get in the really interesting area where you want to stop frequently for photos you will slow down. That's a great area you heading to. Dennis -
Now that I've got the new GW it's time to get my electrical accessories (GPS, XM) installed. In addition, I want to install a 12V outlet for phone charger and air compressor use. There is a 12V acc plug under the left fairing pocket that is only fused at 5A. The instructions with the plug said to change the 5A fuse to 10A. I'm not going to do that. I would like to use the existing power source to trigger a relay that is connected to the battery on a 20A fuse. From the relay I would feed both the GPS and 12V plug. My question is, is there a way to route a wire from the battery to the left pocket without pulling the shelter off? It's hard to believe a bike like this doesn't come standard with a 12V port. Dennis

Thanks for the reminder Eck. I was thinking about that yesterday as I went around a curve. Just wondered how far one would be able to lean before dragging a toe and realizing there was no floorboard for protection. Dennis

I managed to ride about 90 miles today and man that Wing is different. Every time I started off I would instintively attempt to bring my foot up on the floor board that wasn't there. I desperately need those highway pegs I have on order. With the venture I rarely let the RPMs drop under 2500. On the Wing they rarely go over 2500. Of course I am really trying to adhere to the break-in procedure of no full throttle acceleration in the first 300 miles. But 7/8ths throttle feels real good. Dennis

I'm seriously considering the Hannigan Europa II trailer. The tail lights match the bike and it is basically the same as the LT. However, I do like the looks of the LT better. I'm probably going to ride to Murray KY in the next couple of weeks to have a look at the trailers first-hand before I commit to one. I really like the Trekker trailers but at $4800 with options I think they are a bit overpriced. A color matched Hannigan will be around $3600. Dennis

Thanks Eck, I've already got 2 of those things on order. Wingstuff.com and I are going to become real familiar with each other. There's even more stuff available for the wing than the Venture. I've already got $400 worth of stuff on order and I haven't even ordered a new trailer and hitch yet. Dennis

OK, I did it, I jumped ship to the Honda camp. Yesterday I picked up a new 2010 GL1800 and I did so with reservations. I still feel the Venture provides a more comfortable riding position. While I am not as comfortable on the Wing I've ridden about 50 miles on a friends bike and with a few modifications I think I can make it work. Now, why did I make the switch now? First, we've got a 6000 mile trip planned for this summer and my wife suggested that we take a new bike. Don't you just love a wife like that. The only bikes I considered were a new Venture, a Victory Vision, and the Wing. As good as the Venture is I just couldn't bring myself to buy another Venture with the dated design. I found the Vision very comfortable and gave it serious consideration but my wife wasn't comfortable on it. So that wouldn't do. And that left me with the Wing. If anyone cares to know, I got the Wing with CB, rear spoiler with brake light, and fog lights out the door and on the road for $20,560. If someone would have given me any real hope that there would be an updated 2012 Venture I would have probably waited. However, no one could. So I found a nice deal on a new 2010 base GL1800 so I took the leap. If I can't make it work and/or a new Venture arrives in 2012 you may find a slightly used Wing on the market next year. My wife asked me last night how I was going to get along without the cassette deck. Hope you guys will still let me hang around. Dennis

You might want to look at this set-up. http://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SIE-COBRA-KIT I have a friend that uses a Cobra walkie talkie in a similar set-up and it works really well. I think better than the J&M radio for less money. Dennis

Now that's funny! I hadn't even considered what to do with them. I may have to reconsider. Dennis

Not much chirp. I did change to an "I" basket and I don't notice it now. Of course I'm always listening to music anyway. I'm likely going to be moving to something other than Yamaha. Dennis

It's got 51,000 miles on it. And Yeah, I could price it with delivery included. A ride to CO would be nice . Dennis

Yes, the halogen lights for the Vstar/Roadstar work. I changed my sealed beams to those. The main difference is the halogens have a toggle switch on one of the lamp housings instead of the remote switch that mounts next to the 12V outlet for the Venture lamps. Dennis

It's very likely that I'll be selling my '07 RSV and Unigo trailer very soon. I haven't decided if I'll sell them as a package deal or separately. I'll know more this weekend after I talk with a couple of dealers. I'll post to the classifieds when I get the details ironed out. Here are a couple of photos. Dennis

Mustang or Corbin Seat
Midrsv replied to viragofan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Since you are looking for passenger comfort the Mustang may not be the right seat. I have a Mustang with backrest on my RSV. I like the seat and my wife doesn't. It seems that the passenger seat is sloped toward the front. In addition to it be harder than the pillowtop seat, my wife complains that she slides forward and has to constantly push herself back. I contacted Mustang and they confirmed that that was the design and since the seat is a molded foam seat they couldn't take the cover off and reshape the passenger seat. So now if my wife is going to ride with me for more than an hour or so I switch the seat back to the pillow top. If the wife ain't happy........ Dennis -

LED Signal light EQUALIZER quandry HELP
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm running LED signals from Custom Dynamics with no problem. For LED's I used http://www.customdynamics.com/yamaha_turn_signal_retro.htm and for a load equalizer I'm using the Slim Line Metric Signal Stabilizer shown on this page http://www.customdynamics.com/loadequalizer.htm Self cancelling still works.
