I like the idea of Spot Connect. Not sure if I'll upgrade when it becomes available. On a trip last year there were quite a few areas where I was without cell coverage and it would have been nice to be able to get a message out. I have a Spot 2 and my family really likes being able to follow my progress along the way. If I ever had to use the help button I'm sure it would freak people out at home not knowing what the problem was. With the connect feature you could at least let them know you had a flat tire or were out of gas. Here is a link to my last year's tracks http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 Dennis

I use the Slim Line Metric Signal Stabilizer from Custom Dynamics. It's not plug and play but is fairly easy to tap into the wiring under the seat. My self cancelling signals still work. Dennis

Thought I would post a follow up report after riding a few times with the chaps. They are comfortable and easy to put on. Today I left home and it was 17 degrees. I was very comfortable with the chaps and my Tourmaster Synergy liner under my Tourmaster Jett jacket. I also wore a full face HJC helmet. While I only ride about 12 miles to work I feel I could have ridden for a few hours with not problem. Two of my riding buddies have also ordered Colorado Chaps and both are pleased with their performance. The chaps will save me about $3/day in fuel expense since they allow me to ride the bike instead of taking the Tahoe on these cold morning. Dennis

I have the Mustang seat and for the most part I am satisfied with it. My wife is not. The seat is definitely more firm than the pillow top. A new pillowtop seat is the most comfortable seat in my opinion. For me, it just breaks down after about a year of riding. Maybe I am just too heavy for it. On the other hand, my wife thinks it's just fine. She does not like the Mustang for long distances. So, I ended up ordering a new riders pillowtop seat to have on hand for long rides, greater than a few hours so that I can switch out the seats for those trips. Since I'll only need to change it 3 or 4 times a year it should last me the life of the bike. All other times I'm on the Mustang. So now we're both happy. Here is a link to a previous thread about the Mustang with photos and links to some very high-res photos. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49596&highlight=mustang Dennis

Congratulations on the chest. You'll love it. Last year I got tired of trying to find tools. I had a modest Sears roll around chest and it was packed. I couldn't find anything because the drawers were so full I couldn't see stuff. So, I bought one of the huge roll around cabinets from Sams. It's about 5 feet tall and 6 feet long. Now the tools are spread out so I can find stuff. Dennis

I used an HJC CS-2 years ago and it was comfortable. Today I use a carbon fiber HJC full face helmet and it is the best I've used. Dennis

beads in tire balancers
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I used 2 oz in each tire per the recommendations with the Dynabeads. I haven't noticed any effects of pot holes on their performance. When I started using them I was skeptical. I had just mounted new tires and had balanced them with a cheap static balancer that came with my No-mar tire changer. After I balanced them with that the tires did not ride smooth at all. So rather than pull the wheels off again and take them to be spin balanced I decided to risk a few dollars on Dynabeads. Pulled the lead weights off and poured the beads through the valve stem and they worked. So when it came time to replace those tires I just used the beads from the start on the new E3's. Same result, they work. Dennis- 30 replies

beads in tire balancers
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I doubt it is in balance as he starts off. The location of the beads would be at the bottom and would knock the balance off. I don't notice any imbalance on startup. I assume that at slow speeds the imbalance isn't noticeable and by the time you reach the speed at which it is the beads have found their spot. Dennis- 30 replies

beads in tire balancers
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've been running them in two sets of tires with a total of about 25,000 miles so far and I'm sold on them. No wheel weights on at all. I have thee riding buddies that are also using them with no complaints. Dennis- 30 replies

Which LED Signal LIghts?
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My light is a Whelen "striplite" and it is the brightest I've found. A4pumper also installed one. I'm considering adding a second one stacked under the first to double the size. Here's a photo. Dennis -
Which LED Signal LIghts?
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I use these and like them. I think they are more noticeable. http://www.customdynamics.com/yamaha_turn_signal_retro.htm You do need one of their resistor packs to slow down the flash speed if the fast flashing bothers you. Dennis -
Intermittent Radio Channel Selection
Midrsv replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Mine began having the same problem intermittently. It only occurs when it is cold, less than 40 degrees. The display will dim, the buttons will become unresponsive, the volume always works. This happened on my '04 and the radio control head was replaced under warranty and they have a controller on order now for my '07. Gotta love that 5 year warranty. Dennis -
That looks a lot simpler than my No-mar changer. I have the model that mounts into my truck's hitch receiver. http://www.nomartirechanger.com/

If I could get comfortable on a Wing I would already own one. I like the, engine and smoothness of the bike but with the peg position and the wide engine in front of you feet I just can't get comfortable on one. Dennis

This is what I use..http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=&catId=&productId=p281987&leafCatId=&mmyId= and it works pretty well. It also has a bleeder valve. Dennis

I checked out the White Horse chaps and they look good. But the deal breaker for me is the sizing. They would be about 5 inches too long for me. That's why the custom sizing of the Colorado Chaps appealed to me. Dennis

The cordura looks very similar to my Tourmaster jacket and is probably as durable. They also offer the chaps in 2 tougher grades, Balistic Nylon and Kevlar. I just didn't want them to be too stiff so I chose the 1000 denier Cordura. They offer knee armor as well. Dennis

I forgot to mention that the chaps come with a stuff sack and they compress into a really small pack. Dennis

I just received a pair of fleeced lined Cordura Nylon chaps from www.coloradochaps.com and I am impressed. The chaps are custom made from your measurements, thigh and inseam. Instead of a typical belt they have a velcro strap that loops over your existing belt. I guess they assume you'll be wearing one. While it is not frigid here right now I did take a short ride with them on and they are very "toasty". They are easy to put on. Just put your foot and leg through the top and pull the zipper to your ankle. I've never cared for leather chaps and they always seemed too hard to get on. And with my short legs I could never find leather that fit right. I thought I would take a chance on these and I'm glad I did. Lori at coloradochaps.com is very good to work with. If you're cold, give them a try. Dennis

While I would love to make it to the Cody rally I doubt that will fit within our time frame. I'll be travelling with 3 to 5 other riders. Our wives will fly out to meet us there. Since it is about 2500 miles from central KY to the west coast we'll plan to take 5 days out and back and then 5 to 7 days doing the fun parts along the coast. We've all been through Yellowstone and Glacier a few years ago so we'll probably pass those up on this trip. We don't plan to ride much further south than Monterey, maybe on down to Big Sur. We'll likely drop the ladies off at the Monterey airport and head east with a possible day through Yosemite. We'll want to see the Redwoods, Napa Valley a few mountains and the coast highway. Keep the ideas coming. Dennis

I'm beginning to plan our next big ride for next summer. We're planning to make our way to Eugene OR and take 5 or 6 days to ride along the coast to Monterey CA. Does anyone have any suggested routes or must see places that we shouldn't miss. We'll probably travel in July. Thanks, Dennis

We had reservations in Whitefish the night before we went through the park and then we had rooms reserved in Choteau the next night and the reservations were definitely needed. If I were doing it again I would spend a night in the park if I could. Dennis

I guess I've deleted my planning information for my trip to Yellowstone and Glacier. Basically I rode with several friends to Jackson Hole, WY and then we rode a loop out of Jackson Hole through Yellowstone, cut across the corner of Idaho, on into Montana and Glacier NP. We rode through Glacier from west to east and then turned south on 89 through Choteau, Big Timber, Red Lodge and Cooke City. We then re-entered Yellowstone from the east entrance and returned to Jackson Hole. Attached is a map of our route. Also, I still have photos on my web site that can be seen at www.traynorphoto.com/glacier Dennis

We rode through Yellowstone and Glacier 4 years ago. We stayed in Whitefish and then rode the "Going to the Sun" road from west to east. A great ride. I'll try to find some information from our trip. Dennis
