  1. When I had mine apart last week I noticed the "dent" in the ends also. Probably something to do with the manufacturing process. Dennis
  2. Yes, you can make calls. I make them daily using my Zumo 550. I commute to work on the most days and if I'm stuck in traffic I'll often call my wife to let her know I'm running late. I have the top 4 or 5 people that I call in my address book so that they are the first ones in the list when I hit the phone directory. Also, the 550 has a one touch button to call home. That way it's only a 2 button touch to reach my wife and 3 quick taps to reach the 4 or 5 most frequently called. The call fidelity is excellent and people don't realize I'm on the bike unless I tell them. As tx2sturgis mentioned you have to use some common sense when using the phone. I've been known to ask people to hold on or call back when I get into a traffic situation where I need to be super alert. I find using the phone on the bike is much easier than in the car because of the hands-free aspect. I especially like it on long trips. While cruising down the interstate I can easily search for a hotel call ahead and make reservations. And the last couple of years my dad was alive he would call every couple of hours to check on my location so he could keep track of me on his road atlas. I'll probably upgrade to a 665 soon. Dennis
  3. That's when a SPOT could of come in handy if you were out of cell phone range. Dennis
  4. i just went out to the garage and checked my new E3 with less than 300 miles and it also had the shiny rings. The appear to be along the edge of the tread where it intersects with the sidewall. Sorry I can't suggest anything that hasn't already been mentioned. Dennis
  5. Tell me more about trail ridge road. I'm going to be on it in a couple of weeks. Is it passable? Dennis
  6. Thanks, that looks like a good alternative. Dennis
  7. We were through that area 2 years ago when we rode through the South Utah parks. From Montrose we plan to take 50 to 92 to 133 to Carbondale. Dennis
  8. I have a temp gauge and mine comes on when I'm stuck in traffic at 215 degrees and he fan cycles and holds it that temp until I start moving again. Normally it appears the thermostat opens at about 190 or so. It will hold about that while riding. Dennis
  9. From their web site they are also using 6.2L 425 HP engines. DT
  10. Thanks Brian, You make some good points. I'm all for avoiding the truck traffic. Our main reason for stopping in Abuquerque is that it has the closest decent size airport. A couple of the wives are flying in there. We'll only be there one afternoon and evening and I do plan to visit the "old town". From there we're going to spend the next day in Santa Fe and surrounding area. We move from town to town daily and will stop in Durango, Montrose, Carbondale, Frisco, Estes Park, Lusk WY and Hill City SD. Drop my wife at the Rapid City airport and then express home. Dennis
  11. Thanks CB. I really want to ride through that area. While we're not in a huge hurry we do need to make about 400 miles each day. Will that be a problem through that area? Dennis
  12. Thanks, just the kind of info I was looking for. Dennis
  13. We're headed west in a couple of weeks. After stopping in Sikeston, MO we're headed to Abuquerque. Rather than run the interstate we were thinking of following US 412 across Arkansas and Oklahoma and then drop down to Amarillo on US 60. From there we will take I-40 on into NM. My question is 412 a decent road? Anything to see along the way? Dennis
  14. Joe, you can actually see the turn signals pretty well as they are. And the light bar under the trunk provides adequate tail and brake lights. There is probably some law about covering the license plate though. Dennis
  15. I took some Mobil 1 to my dealer one time when I had them servicing the bike and they put it in with no questions or comments. Dennis
  16. My wife said we had to have one. She saw it at Vogel last year and it's only taken me nearly a year to get it done. I had a friend that welded it up for me and I was ready to spray it with black Krylon that I had on hand and she said "Oh NO!, that needs to be chromed". So it is. Don't you just love a wife that appreciates safety chrome! Dennis
  17. I completed installing the PCW clutch upgrade kit last night and it went together very easily as others have stated. The clutch appears to be working and there is absolutely no slipping. However, I have a question about the friction zone. With the original spring it seemed that the clutch started grabbing when the lever was about 1/2 way out and there was 3/4 of an inch or so of friction zone. With the upgrade it seems that the friction zone is only about the last 1/4 inch of lever travel before the lever is free. It makes me wonder if the clutch is fully engaging. I still have about 1/4 inch of free travel in the lever after fully engaged. Is this consistent with other's experience? Dennis
  18. The high beam burnt out. I like the bulb I just don't like having to replace it. A real PIA. Dennis
  19. I just replaced my Silver Star Ultra after only 2 months. I went back to the standard bulb. Dennis
  20. Sleeperhawk, if you try a Mustang and order directly from them they give you 10 days to try it out.
  21. My wife and I rode about 6 hours yesterday and it was her first opportunity to check the seat out real well. While she liked the stock seat she said that the Mustang didn't cause her any discomfort. For me I still got tired of sitting on it but I didn't have the pain as with the stock seat. So I think we'll keep the Mustang. Dennis
  22. I'm about to turn over 40,000 miles on my bike and I'll be leaving for a 4500 mile trip through the CO mountains in a few weeks. Is the clutch something that I should be concerned about? What is the normal life for a clutch. I do a lot of city riding so I may use the clutch more than some of you. I'll replace it before the trip if I'm getting close to the useful life of the clutch. Dennis
  23. Now I must admit, I am a technology guy. I like computers and cameras. I always travel with a laptop. We have two phones and one is the Iphone and the bill is about $100/month. I can afford it and would easily pay more if required. I don't golf, fish or chase women. But I do like electronic toys. I am not an apple worshiper. Actually the phone is the only Apple product I use. I have a friend with the HTC evo Android phone and it is nice with a lot of features. I just didn't find it as easy to use. Now I don't expect everyone to need or even want an Iphone or any other smart phone. I merely posted to let people know what to expect if they were getting one. And I would guess that many that have never used a smart phone feel they don't need it and see no value in it. However, after using one for a couple of years it has become an necessity. For example, I'll research a topic for work while I am away from my desk. Saves me from going back to my office. I'll snap a photo of something at work and email it to myself rather than find dept. camera, make sure the battery is charged, and then have to transfer the photos. Like tonight I was at dinner with my riding buddies (we do this every Thursday) and we're discussing our upcoming trip out west. I look up points of interest, check mileage between points, check hotel rates, etc. The point is that these things are tools and if you choose to embrace them they can be very helpful in ways you haven't yet imagined. I recently got a SPOT too. But no need to talk about that here. Dennis
  24. I preordered the new Iphone 4 early on the 15th and Fed Ex delivered it today. I like it. It's much improved over the Iphone 3G that I had. It was a snap to switch over from my old phone. The new phone is much faster. The apps are much snappier and the 3G data transfer now approaches broadband speed. It seems that the old Iphone wasn't capable of processing the data at 3G speeds. The new phone seems to correct that. There are many new features and the phone seems easier to hold. Not as slippery as the original. I just love new toys... Dennis
  25. I'm right outside Lexington and I have a new set of Dunlop E3's for a 2nd gen in my garage that I plan to install in a couple of weeks. Unforturnately I can't get away from work in the morning to get it down to you. If you could make it to the I75 Yamaha in Richmond I could probably get away long enough to bring it to you there if needed. Dennis
