This is almost as good as a Harley vs Metric debate. All are good. I've worked with Ipads and I have an iPhone. I'm still leaning toward the Toshiba Thrive. I just like the way it feels in my hand. I really don't care much at all about apps. I've downloaded several for my phone and really don't use them. They are more for the gee whizz factor. In a tablet I am really only looking for an email reader and web browser with an occasional video thrown in. My work email and calendar are hosted by Google and we have found that Android phones and tablets provide a better integration of our corporate email and calendar functions. The Toshiba Thrive has stereo speakers, connectivity without buying additional dongles, a user replaceable battery so you could carry an extra if needed and it is a better value (for me and my needs) at $329 for a 16gb wifi unit. That being said, the iPad is a great unit also and I wouldn't start to try to convince anyone otherwise. However, there are options based on one's needs. Dennis

I've been looking at tablets also. I really like the Toshiba Thrive. It's not as thin as the iPad or Galaxy but it feels better in my hand. It's an Android 3.1 unit and it has a textured back cover that is easier to hold. It also has an SD slot, USB and hdmi ports which the others do not. I have an iPhone an my knock on the iPad is that it won't play flash and windows media files. Although it does have the best display. I'm still looking and waiting for prices to drop. Dennis

Just curious, How many Wing Riders do we have on the site?
Midrsv replied to Midrsv's topic in Honda Goldwing Tech Talk
Welcome to the club Rick. I've 16,000 miles on mine since March and I think I'm getting comfortable on it. Dennis -
The website says the info will be posted at 12:00 PM Eastern time. Dennis

I hear ya Fuzzy. Except they won't pull over for a funeral in Lexington but I've seen it everywhere else. And, I sure don't know about that Ale 8. I tried that stuff once and thought it was for strippin' paint and wallpaper. We need to get together and ride sometime "neighbor". Dennis

I found this link on another board and thought I would share it. http://suncoastwings.com/Curtis/index.htm I wonder how much money he's got in that ride? Dennis

Since I already had a set of new Bridgestones in the garage so I put them on the bike today. I got 11,000 miles out of the last set. I think they were about done. The long interstate ride to Oregon and California sure flattened them out, see pic. I'll look at a car tire at the next tire change. Dennis
-
Thanks for the photos Tom. I started reading about the tires and I ran across this: While Ecsta SPT XRP (Extended Runflat Performance) tires are designed to combine performance, comfort and good looks with the convenience run-flat mobility provides, they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. That's kind of a deal breaker for me since I ride in subfreezing temps as long as there is no ice or snow. Dennis
-
Joe or Tom, can one of you post a couple of photos of your tire on the bike. Maybe a shot from the rear and side. I'm close to needing a new tire and I'm thinking. Dennis

I've got the F4+4 windshield on my GW and it really helped with wind buffeting around my head. It's held up good so far and sheds water well. Dennis

I have a no-mar changer that I bought with two of my riding buddies. So I am only into it for a third of the expense. We have the model that you insert into hithch reciever on a truck since we didn't want to permanently mount it. It works when you follow their video instructions. We don't use the balancer. We just use dynabeads and I now have Centramatics on my goldwing. I seem to go through two sets of tires a year so it has paid for itself. Dennis

I received my latest copy of Motorcycle Consumer News today and it had a review and comparison of the 2012 Goldwing and BMW 1600. The article rated the GW higher in most categories. I think the BMW had better brakes and better handling due to its lower mass. Interesting read if you get a chance. Dennis

That seems a bit high to me. My brother is close to selling his '06 Midnight RSV with less than 10,000 miles. He will likely sell it for around $9,000. Dennis

The only time I notice them is if they are folded out when I am backing out of a parking spot. The back of my leg hits them. One other time I put my foot down before coming to a complete stop and I felt them as my leg moved toward the rear. If I get in stop and go city traffic I would probably have her fold them in just so I had maximum room to move my legs if needed. They are positioned significantly behind the riders foot peg and I think for me to feel them while riding I would have to move my foot completely behind the riders peg which isn't going to happen with these knees. Attached are a couple of photos to show the mounting and position relative to the rider's pegs Dennis

cb/radio question
Midrsv replied to david Taylor's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Eck, The control for the radio and cb are independent. You just push the radio or cb button to switch it from headset to speakers. I accidently did it once. I always use the headset for both. Dennis -
Eck, They are Kuryakyn part number KU7016. Here is the link from Wingstuff. http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/5_kuryakyn/32957_passenger_cruise_pegs/ They bolt up to the outside of the passenger boards using the same bolt holes as the original boards only with longer screws. It took no more than 10 minutes to install them. Here is a photo I grabbed from Wingstuff showing the mounting holes. If you look at your floorboard mount it will be very apparent where they fit. I looked at the switchblade boards but these seemed to offer more leg movement. Dennis
-
If you are looking for more comfort for your passenger check this out. I recently installed a pair of Kuryakyn highway pegs for the passenger on my Goldwing. My wife has now ridden with them a couple of times and she said they do make the ride more comfortable and they allow her to move her feet around. They don't get in my way at all and when not in use they just fold flat against the side cover and they add more chrome. Here are some photos. Dennis

The Garmin Zumo 550 works well for me. I've looked at the 660 and 665 and they are nice but I don't think the mounting system is as robust as the 550. Why wouldn't you want to create routes? It's very easy to do online and then transfer them to the GPS. I do it all the time. Dennis

We use a small soft side cooler from LL Bean. Similar to this one: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/63702?feat=63703-ppxs&dds=y It holds about water bottles or cans. Dennis
-
I think they owe you a new helmet. My shop typically did a test ride of 1/4 mile or so after doing any mechanical work on my bike. However, I feel it was the mechanics responsibility to make sure the helmet was tied down or remove it. Dennis

If you have an Iphone , I find the radar app, RadarScope to be very valuable. It is a radar program that maps the NOAA radar stations real time or nearly real time. We hit a storm last week heading into St. Louis. We stopped and watched the radar and were able to get between a couple of bands of rain on our way to our hotel. The app isn't free. I believe is costs $9.99 and for me, it's worth it. See www.basevelocity.com Dennis

I have an Aluma mc210, 2 bike trailer. It's not enclosed but it is a great trailer to pull. All aluminum. You don't say how often you plan to use it. If I were to do it over I wouldn't have bought a trailer at all. The once or twice a year that I need a trailer I would just do as Eck does and rent a U-haul bike trailer. Far cheaper than owning one and I wouldn't have to find a place to store it. Dennis

My dealer was I75 Yamaha in Richmond, KY. Good Luck. Dennis
-
Frank, check out these threads. Yamaha replaced my faring and put bolts in where they were missing. Initially my dealer accused me of leaving them out. We had a few words about that and they covered. Later he had another Venture in with the same issue and missing bolts. He then believed me.
