  1. Just got done relocating the TCI to the top of the airbox and while I was at it found the boost sensor to be bad and replaced it. Thanks to a popular member here, I was able to do so fairly quickly. Anyhow, now that the TCI is on top of the airbox, I am concerned with it getting hot due to the lack of cooling airflow around it. In its original location, while moving forward at any speed, air flow I think flowed around the TCI providing a cooling effect. Even though that air had passed through the radiator, I am pretty sure it was a lot cooler than the air that will now surround it being on top of the airbox. If this is correct, what would be the effect? Could that hotter air lessen the longevity of the TCI? Or am just one of those Mr. Fulla Schitt that I was reading about a few minutes ago?
  2. I got my Cavalcade running today and wow - what a ride! I'm impressed in the short distance I've gone. I sent the carbs in to have them rebuilt and then had a horrible time getting the airbox back on. A guy in my church who is rated one of the top mechanics in the nation came to my rescue! Now it is time to put her up for sale. I bought it to make a few bucks!
  3. I need some "forks for dummies" info. Never taken a fork off a big bike like this in my life [and it has been a long one]. Looks like a big job if they come out the top when taken apart. Do they come apart from the bottom? I need to rebuild the left side which developed some major squeaks.
  4. I want to get a shorter tinted windshield but not sure about size. Is the windshield measured from the base of the screen itself or from the top of the chrome strip it sticks out of? Mine measures 17" from the strip.
  5. As most of you know by now I finished our trike (3.5 years). My problem is I keep pushing gear lube out of the vent that I installed. I installed the vent in the top left rear of the flipped over center section (no axle tubes). Now looking back on old photos, I can't see a vent in the the old gear case cover. I couldn't use it in the build so I threw it away. Does anyone out there have or know of someone that has a 1989/1994 Cougar or Thunderbird V6 with the 7.5" IRS. Could I please get you to look under the rear and see if there is a vent of any kind on the top rear of the aluminum cover? Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. PS Everything is closed up for Memorial Day so I can't get into any wrecking yards.
  6. Anyone here try to straighten one of these out? Was doing some cleaning this PM and had the bike in a position that caused it to fall to the right (as I set on it)...Top of Bar is bent Upwards...Repair, Replace Thoughts please... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA
  7. Does anyone make one? Have been looking but to no avail. Seems to me it wouldn't be that hard to do: An aluminum channel same shape and thickness as the bottom of our stock windshield about 3 inches wide with receiver lugs in a channel on top side. top piece would sandwich bottom of stock windshield on top side and fit into reciever on bottom side with a quick release. Could also make a interlocking finger pattern between the two with one set screw. Hardest part would be getting the perfect bend. Love my windshield on the cooler days and interstate riding, but when it gets to 90 deg... At slower speeds it sure would be nice to take it off ... and possibly put it in fabricated shell that attaches to your luggage rack to protect it... Help I need more Wind! er... let me rephrase that... Help I need more AIR... LOL
  8. I have the Diamond R hidden Hitch and find it a pain hooking up the safety chains. Am I missing some thing or is there another option other than the 2 holes on top of the hitch inside the fender? How do you guys hook your chains on the hitch? I have been thinking about something like the picture below.....is this advisable? Keith
  9. I've been fighting with the cover on the thermostat housing leaking on my '89. When I bought it 2 1/2 years ago, it had a small leak. I took the thermostat housing off and changed all 4 O rings. Everything was fine---for a little while. A month or two later it started leaking intermittantly. Usually when left outisde in the cold, but not always. Last winter I pulled it off again and replaced the O rings again, and also the housing cover because it was mentioned here that they do warp from the exhaust pipe heat. BTW, I put it together with O-rings I purchased at my dealer. It was OK all last year, but this winter it started leaking again. The coldest my garage gets during the winter is about 32 degrees F. When I took it apart, I found that the O-ring was damaged (it looked like it'd been nicked). I remember that it was real hard to get the top on the housing last year and the OE O-ring is 2mm dia., so I installed a 1/16" O-ring. Now it seeps a little bit when it starts to warm up, but when it's hot it's fine. BTW, 1/16"=.0625" 2mm=.079" I will pick up a Yamaha O-ring tomorrow, but I think that something else is wrong because it's happening so frequently. I cleaned up the main housing surface that mates wtih the O-ring so there shouldn't be anything keeping the O-ring from seating. With the 1/16 O-ring, the top felt snug. When I use a 2mm O-ring, it is TIGHT. I'm pretty certain that on my 83' I used a 3/32" (.094") O-ring, but there is no way I could get that to fit this bike. I used a coating of Vaseline to keep from damaging the O-rings when things were assembled. Any ideas?? I'm thinking of heating up the aluminum portion of the housing (in hot water) to get it to expand so that the top will go on easier and not damage the 2mm O ring. Frank D.
  10. I finally got around to doing the mods to my seat that I had planned for a while. The nice warm temps we have been having here lately reminded me that riding season will be starting soon. I've done this mod on two other bikes in the past and it's very easy to do. Took me 2 hours yesterday while sitting at my living room table and that includes cleanup Anyhow, I created a webpage showing the mod for anyone that might be interested in doing this yourself. I'll update it with my impressions after I get my bike out of hibernation and get a long ride or two in. Pillow Top Seat Mod
  11. Anyone have a 1300, 1200 may also work, block that is split in half, I need some help on the location of the two oil nozzles in the care halves. When I sent block to machine shop, top & bottom, because they cleaned them, I took everything out. Including the two small oil nozzles & tossed them in a baggie. Well when cleaning stuff I realized they were different and I can't tell which one goes in which hole. 1st picture is attached of two nozzles. Left one is brass color with phillips slot, other is silver with straight slot. 2nd picture is of case top, and 3rd is of case bottom, locations for these. The 88 parts fiche indicates they both go into the bottom case. The service manual doesn't mention them that I can find. And, the VMax is different. The motor DVD mentions them but doesn't show them. The 83 1200 fiche shows them going into the case where I am 99.9% sure they go, but doesn't show the difference. Gary
  12. for all you old timers that are somewhat mechanically inclined looking for a great hobby. try a cushman scooter out for size. i've been reliving my childhood memories for quite a few years building and restoring cushmans. i started riding cushmans back in the 50's and have never lost my love for them. there are some very neat and fast cushmans out there that will easily top 100 mph and blow the doors off alot of motorcycles. you ain't lived till you put a harley in the weeds on a motor scooter. been there done that. i'm building a sleeper now with a very warmed over harbor freight motor and cvt drive. it should top out around 85 mph. it is a 1958 pacemaker, a model i wanted since i was a kid. check out some of the cushman sights for more info. just punch in cushman scooter and have a ball reliving the old days. there is a meet in portland indiana, in july, every year, with thousands of antique scooters and motor bikes for sale, at the fairgrounds. if you need any info on meets or cushmans just give me a holler. us old timers are slowly dying off and we, (the cushman folks), want to keep the interest alive. bill
  13. Is winter about over yet? I am getting tired of this crap. We have had over 40 inches of snow so far, and odds are we are gonna get quite a bit more. Had 6 inches yesterday, and wind is gonna pick up later today. To top it off temperature is supposed to dip to a balmy -33 below tonight, with windchills reaching -50 (insert expletive here)! I really like winter, but enough is enough......
  14. I have had my 08 Venture since May last year. It is the first bike I have had with a heel shift. The only advantage I see to the heel shift is that it saves wear and tear to the top of your left boot. I do not need to move my foot from its rest position to shift up if I use my toe, whereas I must move my leg back and lift it to get the heel on top of the shifter. So, my question(s): How many use the heel shifter? What advantages do you see to using it? Is it worth the effort to retrain myself to use this feature? Thanks for any thoughts.
  15. I have a 1985 VR with the large top box. I bought a black backrest on ebay, but, it is for the smaller top box. Anyone need a very nice black backrest?
  16. Coolant drain on the front of my '86 VR is dripping. To replace that o-ring you remove the little set screw in the side and then does that plastic plug unscrew or wiggle out of there. That fitting and the little hose on top were plugged up with a reddish brown clay when I flushed the system, now that I cleaned everything out it started leaking. Thanks
  17. Ok, I finally got around to replacing my original wind screen on my '84 with a new one from Cee Bailey. Got one 2" shorter than stock for a better line of sight over the screen. I've been using Plexus all the time to fight the swirls in the old one but after riding several of my friends bikes I really liked NOT seeing anything in front of me. I like clear. Now I have clear. Ok, so what I'm up to is this. I'm cutting the old screen down, a lot, to be not much more that 6" to 8" higher than the top of the fairing. Real short for those really hot days on summer. Get a lil wind in the face kind of thing. I want to try to apply the window tint film on the inside. I've done several cars and vans with the kits so I'm pretty handy with the stuff. And cutting it that short I get rid of the compound curve so that should make it pretty easy. The question is......anybody know if there might be any weird reaction with the screen and the adhesive on the film? I've read the posts on the spray tints but want to try the film to make sure I keep an even appearance. My only concern with the film is keeping the edges bonded to the surface but that can be covered with some flexible trim along the top edge. Thanks for any imput. Mike
  18. Thought you guys might lke to see this . . . I needed some cargo space that would accommodate my lap top & case (just a bit too big to fit into either of my hard bags) as well as a few other work items. So, I did some surfing and purchased an after market case and then fabicated a bracket to mount it over my rear fender. Check out the attached photos. - Norm. NOTE: I ride solo as my wife has her own ride.
  19. I opened a E-Card this morning and then started getting this small window pop up, looked like a windows app. that said I nneded to up date and that I was out of drive space..it showed up as HDDLow and created an Icon on my desk top..I could not close it, it changed my desk top to all black except for what it wanted me to click. I ran a full Mcafee scan and it found and removed it, but I still did a system restore, hope its gone. I do not use this lap top for anything other then this site, email, PGR stuff, so if I end up having to wipe it clean and start over I will not be out anything. Has any one heard of this one?? I would sure like to catch these ^%$# that have nothing else to do but screw up things..Just be carefull opening up e-cards or anything that you are not 100% sure of. Kreg
  20. I am looking for the name of the grommet that holds the top lid down in the front. I call the top lid the lid that you have to remove to service the air filter, (not the air filter box lid), it is held in the back by the one phillips screw and washers. My front lid is wanting to come up as I am driving, and I think there is supposed to be a grommet that it presses into in the front, or under all the wiring. Does anyone have one for sale or send me in the right direction with a part number, or that has come up with another method to hold the top lid down? Forgive me if I am calling the top lid by the wrong name, I tried searching using a lot of different phrases and came up empty. It is an 89 Venture. This is the one I am going to fix the fuse panel on this winter. Thanks, Don
  21. OK its winter!!! Once in a while the Warden gets busy and don't want to do my eggs, taters, biscuits, saugage & gravy. So I take a look in the fridge to see what has been left there. This morning there was some leftover O'Brian potato Hamburger Helper. Fried a couple eggs tossed them on top along with a hot pepper and I'll have to remember that one.... GOOOD!! Now gotta move that fire extinguisher back to the bathroom!!! Whats your favorite leftover???
  22. After reading through some posts on the problems with the plastic thermostat top , here is my solution. I cut a support washer from a piece of 1/8 plate to fit around the housing. My old top was warped like most of them are and not mating flush with the base. After the washer was put on it is flush all the way around. I feel better about this now. Since I have the motor out its a good time to fix things like that.
  23. Know this has been here but was just looking again. Someone from Griffin Georgia has a ton of 1st Gen parts listed. Look OK but he didn't get a nibble. Check his shipping costs. About twice what the parts are worth on top end. I would have bid on a couple of those. But I'm probally wrong. I'll just go back to my corner.
  24. i talked with my 24 year old son , this evening, and he was elated. yesterday, his gross sales for ONE day, was $42,000.00!highest sales in Houston region, EVER for one day. later today, his manager told him, he was top salesman/expert tech. for the entire Texas region, which includes La.ARK.GA.Ala.and Fl. to top that off, he was informed , today, that he had Top Salesman of the Quarter sewn up again.that will be 13 quarters in a row! oh. he has been with Apple computers, in The Woodlands, TX for just over 3 1/2 years. i know the "good book", says NOT to be "puffed up with pride", but how could i NOT be proud of this kid? just jt
