  1. I know it required to have safty chains on our trailers. But has anyone out there ever have a trailer come off while towing? Have they seen the results of this happening? My guess it would put the bike out of control, resulting it the drivers death, passenger and maybe others. What if the trailer released and there wrer no chains driver and passenger might control the bike. what are the odds of the small trailer killing someone, maybe a lot less if the were hit by bike and trailer. Just had this thought today. what do you guys think?
  2. I know that safety chains are required by law. But does it have to be a chain or can it be nylon straps? With the hitch that I have there is no good place to attach the chain. These straps are just as strong as chains and won't scratch up my bike or hitch. Does anyone know what the chain or strap requirements would be to be legal and properly preform the function the laws is intending to solve? A motorcycle trailer is not that heavy so the chain or strap should not have to be as heavy duty as on other applications. Thanks for you input.
  3. I've been struggling with a problem in my head and hope that some of you with experience pulling a trailer can help me. I understand the reasoning behind safety chains when towing a trailer with a car or truck. If the coupler slips off the ball, the tongue will be caught by the crossed chains and when the tow vehicle brakes are set, the trailers inertia will force the tongue under the bumper to the extent the chains allow before the braking will affect the forward momentum of the trailer. I had that happen one time when towing a U-haul across Texas over black ice. Take my word for it...that was a scary situation. Fortunately, I didn't have to change my shorts when all the excitement was over. They had mysteriously disappeared! Now to my struggle. In my mind's eye, I'm trying to picture exactly what would happen in a similar situation on a bike. It's not such a pretty thing. It seems to me that once brakes are applied on the bike, the tongue will move forward under the momentum of the trailer until the forward edge of the coupler makes contact with the rear tire. It would seem that when that contact occurs, the tire would pick up the tongue and force it into the bottom of the rear fender...repeatedly. Or worse, if there was enough force, it might even raise the back tire sufficiently to lose traction. It might even cause a vertical jack-knife. Now, I want to do some MC camping this fall and I'm committed to pulling this trailer. You can bet that I will check, double-check and recheck at every stop to make sure all is well. But, can anyone dispel my worst case scenarios?
  4. I have the Diamond R hidden Hitch and find it a pain hooking up the safety chains. Am I missing some thing or is there another option other than the 2 holes on top of the hitch inside the fender? How do you guys hook your chains on the hitch? I have been thinking about something like the picture below.....is this advisable? Keith
  5. Snow chains on the Venture? Well, not exactly....but I did get caught in the freak snowstorm in Amarillo over the weekend. Texas had snow and it was 65 degrees in Pennsylvania... The first 3 shots show my bike in the carport at a friends place and the road out front. The next pic...um...no comment. But the last 2 pics verify the conditions the next day: Snow, and yet the trees are still sporting leaves, and waterfowl still hanging around. Mother nature caught us ALL by surprise!
  6. Hi folks can anyone lrt me know at what mileage I should think of replacing the cam chains as my royal star as done 56K with no problems so dont want any now will do this winter if needed happy riding all Regards JWE27, in the UK.
  7. I live in Central Mississippi... I get up this morning and it is snowing HARD. So far we got 4 inches and it is not supposed to stop till noon. I believe some of you northern folks have wished this on us down here in the south. We do not own, nor can you buy any where around here...tire chains...snow shovels...de-icing gear. They have cancelled school cause folks do not know how to drive in snow. Knock it off. This is not funny.
  8. When Ramona and I travel I try to book ahead looking for those discount rates for early booking dates. We always look for free wifi, Indoor pool, king size bed, microwave, fridge, etc. Also some of the motel chains serve a really nice breakfast which we enjoy. Having a cracker barrel close is also a plus. Thursday night everything was great except that was the hardest bed I have ever slept on. We both complained of back pain and hit the pain killer early. Which brings me to my question. What motel chains do you recommend for mattress comfort?I mean this was a business class suite but the bed was hard as a rock.Maybe they sleep on rocks in Pennsylvania I don't know?
  9. I just built a small pull behind trailer. Are safety chains required on motorcycle trailers? It seems dangerous to me. If the trailer comes unhitched, it's flopping around by the chains and would cause you to crash. Any insight?
  10. :confused24:Dh and I've been working on my uncle's '83 Venture Royale for the last couple of days. The license plate has a '96 sticker, leading us to believe the beast hasn't been ridden in 12 years. We've got it running on three cylinders. The fourth hits occasionally. We're using seafoam in the gas. After letting the one carb to the can that's not hitting soak with seafoam overnight, it's doing better, but the engine will quit if dh takes it off choke and takes his hand away from blocking the air intake. He's going to see if the float is stuck. The cylinder is getting spark, and the carb seems to be getting fuel. It's just not sending the mixture to the cylinder. We're trying to avoid rebuilding the cylinders, if we can. We will rebuild them, if we must We changed the fuel filter. The fuel pump has not been replaced. The fuel pump is only pumping fuel in spurts. The fuel filter isn't filling up. Is it supposed to pump constant or only periodically? Is the fuel filter supposed to fill? The petcock is plastic and brittle. Most of what plastic was sticking out to turn has broken off. It needs replacing, but we want to know if there's a metal one to replace it with. I see replacement petcocks on the internet for $36, but they're plastic. Is there an alternative? We have a service manual, but haven't found any information about adjusting cam chains. Is there a way to adjust cam chains? There's a rattling, and we'd like to figure out if it's just chains that need to be adjusted of if we need to anticipate adjusting the valves, not a happy prospect. *wish it weren't shims*
  11. and a dollar short............. Someone was asking about road service programs a while back. I use Motorcycle Towing Service (MTS). The rate is very reasonable. The benefits are exceptional. And they offer the cold climate package for folks living in the frozen wastelands of the country. Coverage includes, the US, Canada, Hawaii and Pôrto Rico. They also have arranges discount rates with several motel chains and auto rental agencies. As I say, at least for me, the services and benefits offered for the price are excellent. You can check them out at www.mts-towing.com
