  1. I think I wasted 3 riding seasons on the 02 Nomad we had. This RSV is a much more refined ride. A pleasure in and around towns and stuff. The Nad was a bit of a pig. I always hated the engine noise at slow speeds. I spent a lot of time and effort to get it sorta wind free. Engine guard chaps, wider windscreen, larger lowers. In the end I was wanting a trunk. And then it left me stranded 800 kms from home with a broken tranny. I filled the air shock today. 30 psi. Way nicer handling now. Even with the stock tires. It lifted me in the seat so that I can actually see a little better over the ShowChrome windscreen I installed. It's a bit windy at 150 kph but I don't ride that fast normally Gonna change out the tires here shortly. Need some thoughts on that. How many kms you guys get per tank? I put in 20 liters today @ 276 kms. Isn't the tank 22 liters? There's lots of rpms so I don't believe in wasting them and like to pull hard thru the gears.I get a slight tingle in my feet and hands when I do. Does anyone else get that? It's kinda like a buzz as opposed to a vibration. I also installed a Utopia backrest...God bless the guys who recommended that! It's worth every penny! All in all it was a great ride the missus and I had today. Gerbing jackets are a godsend as well!
  2. Thought I would post this in case anyone was interested. It's a black tank bra with pocket, concho and tassle. Pretty slick looking. If they had one in brown, I'd jump all over it. There's only one left I think. http://www.chilhowee.net/yamaha-tank-bra/090925019.html
  3. Just bought my first bike-1999 Royal Star Venture. I am about 6'6" tall. When sitting in the seat it tends to push you forward toward the fuel tank. Any ideas or any particular after market seat you guys have had experience with that might help with this problem?
  4. I'm hoping someoene has an opinion. I have my 2007 venture in my garage and have been going over it so it is ready when the snow finally goes away. There are 4 hoses which appear to be vent hoses exiting just left of the rear shock pointing to the ground. The two that are cut at an angle have an oily residue coming out of them. Is this normal???. I followed the one hose up and it goes under the gas tank. I can take off the tank and follow it but wondered if the residue is in fact normal. The bike ran fine when I put it away. As always any opinions or help is always appreciated. Thanks Jim
  5. So this morning, I decided to take the scoot to work... (47° & overcast was good enough for me) 1/2 way through my 40 mile trek... She's runnin outta gas. No gas light.... Strange. Flip to reserve, and carry on to the gas station. Pop the gas cap and see something I can't believe I've never noticed... scaly rust... JB Weld...Ugh! I don't know how I missed it until now (i'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I am always too busy staring at my paint) but I can't deal with a corroding fuel neck/tank. SO- Looks like I'll be ordering some new Alsa paints when the weather warms up and dries out. Anyonw know where I can find a tank, side covers, and fenders for my 97 Royal Star? I would just repaint them, but getting the pinstriping and umpteen coats of clear off just won't be worth it. Besides, I think I want to paint it with the Lava paint from Alsa... I'm willing to part with my paint set (tank, fenders, side covers) if someone wants them.
  6. I think this has been discussed here before, I have been noticing over the years that my clear-coat on my tank is starting to scratch a little and I was wondering were some of you are placing the holder that was on the tank for your head-seat plug in might be now> If moved? . any pictures would be great. not sure if there is a better location for this or maybe another idea? my cord when plugged in seems to be the problem. (rubbing in that area) all the time. Thanks, Jeff
  7. I'm looking for a tan tank bib for my 2000 MM. At one time I found a link here of someone who made them but can't find it again. Help!!!
  8. WooooHooooo I acquired an off white whole hide of leather today and I would like to make a cover to keep my knees from rubbing the tank. Anyone have one off their bike that would be willing to make me a paper template and mail it to me? Thanks in advance. The white leather looks good on the bike. I will be making a few other covers too and of course will have pics when they are done.
  9. I always liked the MM edition seats so I colored my own. The rest and rear seat are still in process as well as the Hopnel tank bib. I think it really makes a midnight look great.
  10. Greetings fellas! been working with my father in law on his 1986 venture that we got him for chrismas (sheriff) we removed the gas tank and treated it with the epoxy kit, we removed the exhaust system and cut open the collector and took the baffels out (they where shot) basically rebuilt the collector, pulled the carbs and cleaned them and reinstalled, also we pulled the front brake calipers and are in the process of replacing them with some rebuilt ones. Ok heres where we are at, Got the bike started last night, just put the fuel tank on and hooked up the fuel lines and started it, it started right up, but when you wick the throttle it wants to die, so..... I turn the choke up to about half, and let the rpms build, then when you wick the throttle it seems to run fine, it seems that the left rear carb has a slight backfire. We are going to sync the carbs today and see if that helps, I dont recall seeing the mixture screw when we took the carbs apart to clean them, where do i find them? this whole project started when my buddy (the previous owner) used sea foam, and the next thing ya know, he clogged the crap outta his carbs, so he cleaned the carbs twice it would run fine for about an hour and then start choking, so it was determined that the gas tank was quite rusty. anyways any ideas would be appreciated! Shane
  11. My buddy bough a a 72 CB 500 with a 550 engine and a Kawasaki front end. He wants to learn how to ride. It's been sitting for four years with half a tank full of gas. First we have to clean out the gas tank, then we're gonna sandblast the carbs. Then were going to clean/empty the brake lines out, I checked and it was empty, but there was just a little in the cylinder still. Then, before we even try to get it running, im going to drop the oil, and get new spark plugs. And if all else goes right, a fresh new paint job He spent $400 on this bike, so hopefully we can get it running right!
  12. I am sure some one has seen this before and can point me in the right direction. I am at work now but I do have my tools with me. As I was riding to work this morning I noticed a Puff of steam from the left rear side of the engnine and upon looking down I noticed that I had some anti-freeze on the pipes ( silver slivers and specks on hot pipes.) it was not much but there. The puffs at first were intermitten as thoght something was starting and stopping the leak. Now I know there is a water line along the upper frame that I believe goes back to somewhere in the top end of the engine. I made it to work after stopping once to check and see if I could see any water leaking. Getting here I had a constant small amount of steam but never got any indicator lights that I was overheating. I removed the resivor cover and yes It was out of antifreeze. This same thing happened last year on the right side and I never found the leak and until now it has never appeared again. I refilled the resivor and the issue disappeared. I plan on removing the tank at lucch to see what I can find but does anyone have a idea where the issue comes from based on its apparent location on the L rear to center of the engine? Nothing shows up on the Right side of engine and all steam rose from left side of gas tank. Byt he way it is about 67 here so its not from the cold. IDeas??? jb may be walking home. Actually, I have Roadside assistance for towing but would like to fix it here at lunch if possible.
  13. The rubber grommet that the front tab on the false tank cover fits in on my '86 VR is in pretty bad shape. Anybody got any idea where I can find a new one? Every now and then the tab will back out of the grommet and I'll see the tank cover start to lift while I'm riding down the road. It causes a feeling that is somewhat less than comfortable. Thanks for the help.
  14. hi everyone well today i decided i would try to start the venture. it sat since ocotber. in my brother-inlaws garage i bought a brand new battery in spetember fot it. a gel type battery with out a hole for the sensor? well battery was fully charged still? i forgot the tender. well i turned on the switch. turned it over. it coughed and coughed. i turned the switch off waited. about 4 minutes tried it again. she caught and started to run? then just died? i did put seafoam in the bike. maybe way to much? 3/4 can to full tank. just before i stored it the bike was running rough. i posted about this before. i just never got a chance to go out and open it up with that seafoam in it. well thats not the main problem what scared me was after i was done trying to fire up the bike. there was gas under the bike? did i do something wrong? or was it because i kept turing the bike on and off did the fuel pump over fill the carbs.? i did push the bike to a new area in the garage and tried again about a hour latter. she fired on the forth try. ideld rough but did idle for about 12 minutes. i shut her down. do to a nervous bro -inlaw. hes been that way for 20 years LOL wont let me work in that garge.?? its a brick garage? except for the roof. what the hell am i going to burn down LOL. thats why oldgoat needs a job and to get a place with a garage. i hate idle hands. i could be out there. tinkering. but i also forgot i didnt install the new plugs yet. because i cant work in there now beacuse its stuffed wiith his stuff now. i will get that bike out in the spring. and work on it somewhere LOL.. or im going to see about a maintenace day that i can get to close by. but the bike needs more then a little maintenance i believe. i can run er down the road just wont idle? i need to get all the parts i got installed tires rotors brakes new gages mine work but water got in there at one time? new false tank well new to me. got radio and tape. and amp. mine work but buttons missing. so im replaceing. so when im done there will be free donor parts. like radio. missing buttons, false tank. broken tab for fuel door other wise a 5 out of ten. custom paint of a water fall on the tank. rotor covers starting to pit. and someone polished them with some wire thingy. lolks good at ten feet shiny but up close?? also have one extra throtle grip with cruise works great thought i need it bout one on ebay. only to find out my cruise wasent working due to a bent pulg connector. its working now. these will be free when the bike has the other parts installed.
  15. Hey guys, Need to pick your brains for a minute. Does anybody know how to remove a decal from a painted metal surface without screwing up the paint? I put a new battery in my old Duc today and had the tank propped up. Fuel leaked out:thumbdown:and messed up the warning decal on the back of the tank. No harm done really PROVIDED that I can get the rest of the $%$##! thing and the glue OFF. Any ideas or suggestions will be Greatly appreciated!! Thanks all!!.......Hm...maybe a guy could take the "Yamaha" decal off the back of the trunk...put an HD logo there and REALLY confuse the Harley dudes:innocent-emoticon:
  16. I am a new member and a new Venture owner,I would really like to thank everyone for all the great information provided. I have a 86 Venture, the fuel tank has rust in it and I need to remove it. What is the easiest way to remove the fuel tank?
  17. Here is a link to a recall on the new HD gas tank mounts. Just in case anyone has switched over to the other side. LOL HD Recall Gas Tank Mount Spotsy
  18. General Questions (still under construction) Q: What does RTFM mean? Is it rude when someone uses this term in a post? A: Read The Friggin' Manual! (or something similar) Although easy to misconstrue, this term is rarely meant here in a mean way. Instead, it is a quick and somewhat lighthearted shorthand to tell the reader the requested information is actually documented appropriately by the manufacturer. Not only should it help you find the information in the future, but it also works as a kind of validation that the supplied answer (which is usually included with "RTFM") is not just something immagined in an alcohol induced fog by the respondent. Q: OK, I get the hint - RTFM! But I don't have the "FM" - where can I get owner's and technical manuals for the Royal Star Venture and Tour Deluxe? A: Although the 2nd Gen bikes have not materially changed since their introduction in 1999, the owner's manuals HAVE changed. (find data on model year differences) You can download the correct one for your specific model year free from the Royal Star web site (insert link here). The shop manual has not been changed since it was first printed in 1999. You can purchase one from Yamaha, find a copy in either hard copy or CD on ebay, or it can be downloaded here ((insert link here). Q: What "known issues" are there with the 2nd Gen Royal Star Venture and Tour Deluxe bikes? A: These are documented in the Technical library here: [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1067]A list of known problems on the Second Gen Venture - VentureRider.Org[/ame] In addition, much more information on any item listed can usually be found with a search of the forums. Just be sure to use search terms greater than three letters and try alternate spellings if you aren't finding the results you expect. Q: Are there any differences between model years for the 2nd Gen bikes? Are all parts interchangeable? A: There are virtually no differences between model years other than colors offered. All parts should be interchangeable, and when ordering new Yamaha parts, an updated part number for any improved or upgraded part should be applicable to all older models, from 1999 through 2010. Although not a technical or design difference, the CD Changer accessory that previously could be purchased for around $600 became standard on the 2009 RSV. It is installed in the right saddlebag. Q: What is covered in my warranty? A: This is pretty straight forward - the U.S warranty is clear that it covers the entire bike for 5 years from the date of initial service. Unfortunately, a few bad dealers seem to be too lazy to provide proper support to their customers and try to claim various problems are not covered, including things like ABS plastic body parts, wheel bearings, etc. These shyster dealers should never be allowed to get away with such dishonest behavior. If you run into something like this, post your experience on the board here and we will try to help you identify the proper places to file your complaints. Q: What fuel should I use? A: This engine is specifically designed to use regular fuel (typically 87 pump octane rating, 85 at high altitudes). Some riders prefer to use premium fuel, but all scientific documentation and independent testing shows that there is zero benefit from using higher octane than the engine needs to prevent knocking or detonation. Using premium fuel will not hurt your bike in any way, but the extra cost is a complete waste of money unless it just makes you feel better. Q: What fuel mileage should I be getting? A: Like tire mileage, there are many things about individual riding styles, the environment, and specific differences in each bike that may make your specific mileage different from the "norm". The biggest variable for this bike is the average speed you ride. In general, if you spend most of the time at 60 or less, you should expect between 36 and 40 MPG, and even up to 45 is not uncommon when spending the day in the twisties. But if you like to travel at an indicated 75 or above, you will probably see mileage figures between 30 and 35 MPG. Q: How much gas does this tank really hold? Is it all usable, or is some left in the tank even after I "run out"? A: The manual says the RSV has a six gallon tank (the RSTD tank is smaller), and this is accurate. However, filling the tank completely to the top is quite difficult unless you have added vent holes to the top of the filler neck as described here: [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=302]Vent the Gas Tank Filler Neck - VentureRider.Org[/ame] These tanks do not have a crossover line to allow the fuel levels to equalize, so if you hold the bike straight and drain the tank, some fuel will be left on the right side. In real riding conditions, the normal sloshing of the gas in leaning, acceleration and braking will allow virtually all of the fuel to be moved to the left side and be used. Several riders have reported filling the tank with up to 5.98 gallons, verifying the full capacity of six gallons and that all of it can be used in most riding conditions. However, if you have been riding on a straight and level highway for a while before you run out, you might be able to get another 10-20 miles by leaning the bike way over to the left to get access to some of the trapped fuel. Q: How far can I go on Reserve? A: The RSV owner's manual says the reserve is 1 gallon, but the majority of owners have found their actual reserve is 1.5 gallons (usually the low fuel light will come on and the odometer switches to the "Fuel" trip meter about 5 miles before the carbs begin starving and require you to switch the petcock). Under most conditions, you should always get a minimum of 40 miles on reserve, and with reduced speeds and careful riding, 60 miles is often possible. Although the RSTD has a slightly smaller tank and no low fuel light, its reserve capacity is theoretically similar, but we are still looking for definitive information there.
  19. OK....this is one of those things that I don't WANT to admit but it might help somebody else so I guess I will. I've been finishing up all the little things that I wanted to do to the bike before leaving for Fort Collins. Yesterday I changed the oil, changed the differential oil, etc. I got the Flanders bar, clutch lines, throttle cables, front brake lines, etc. all changed over the past couple of weeks but had decided to wait on changing the rear SS brake line after getting back. This morning I decided that I was just being lazy so I went ahead and changed it and got the rear brake bled and that is done. Then I decided to take if for a little ride. I still hadn't double checked the calibration of the Speedohealer so I found a road with mileage markers, got up to 60 MPH, hit the cruise and NOTHING. The set light came on but it would not engage. So....I went ahead and checked the Speedohealer without using the cruise. It was dead on at 7 1/2% error calibration so that is good. Got home and decided to work on the cruise. I figured it had to be in the throttle cable box under the gas tank. That's the only thing I had messed with that would screw up the cruise. So I pulled the seat, gas tank, etc. and opened up the throttle box. There was a spring that I wasn't sure how it was supposed to go when I put it back together so I was pretty sure that was the problem. Really couldn't tell how it should go and there is no drawing of it in the manual so I changed it and figured I had it right. I put the gas tank, seat, all that junk back on and went for another ride. STILL no cruise. So...got home and pulled the seat, gas tank, etc. again and opened up the throttle box a second time. This time it was as obvious as it could be. I had the cable from the cruise actuator wrapped around the wrong direction. Stupid mistake as it's fairly obvious which way it should go. So, if you change out your cables, make sure you wrap the cruise cable the right direction. I hate to admit to such a dumb mistake but if it saves somebody else from making it, then I guess it's OK.
  20. hello every one. does any one know anything about these bikes. my next door neighbor is moving to AZ luck sob. well he has 4 bikes and said to me. i just cant take them all. then said theres a old yamaha maxim. 750cc. that i just dont want to take. it has 22.000 miles on it. has not been run in over 8 years. he made me a offer i could not refuse. he said its yours!! just go down to the dmv with me today. pay the transfer. and get new plates. i said damn its a deal. i got a fair looking bike for around $135.00 its now sitting next to my venture. ok seeing as it hasent been running for 8 years when my knee heals. im going to work on this bike as a possible bike for the girlfriend. its a low seat bike. . and shes short. i opened the gas cap and phewwwwwww. the varnish smell knocked me over LOL. i am not going to atempt to start this bike. with out draining the tank. the carb bowls. the fuel filter and maybe the petcock? and theres some rust around the inside of the tank. maybe cream it? all in all it looks like a good starter bike for her. shes going to take the motorcycle safety course. she does know how to operate dirt bikes so i think she will do just fine.
  21. My reserve antifreeze tank gets harder to read, darker, as it gets older (could not be my eyes). I imagine we all have the same problem for the first gens, even with the brights of lights my wrench could not reach it. So I took his advice: 3/4'' dowell, 12 & 1/4" long, top mark (high Mark the bottom from the top of the stick, ) nitched at 9 & 1/8th "; for the low mark, 10 & 7/8". I figure that is accurate enough, but might be off a little and better measured on a reserve tank OFF the bike and in natural light. Just thought I'd pass this tidbit along for other lucky 1st gen riders! JackZ
  22. I have a 1983 Venture Royale. I believe that I have a stuck float on the front left carburetor. I tried a can of seafoam but no success. When I turn the bike over the fuel runs out a hose that is just below the tank. Anybody have any suggestions. Any help would be appreciated. Cant wait to get back on the Highway.
  23. Hey folks... I want to get a reasonably sized tank bag with map window in it... Most of the ones I've found on line look HUGE. Anyone out there use one that they would recommend, and have pictures of it?? Thanks in advance!
  24. I got a chance to sit on a new 2010 Honda Fury today. A friend stopped by to show it to me. He sold his HD Road King off and got this Honda recently. Honda definately took a different approach when they created this bike. It uses a 1300 VTX motor and made a very clean look above the motor. The stretched end and gas tank really made for a custom look, along with the 250 rear tire. I wasn't impressed with the puney car horn, but at least Honda did put Dunlop E3's on at factory. There wasn't any marking on the tank which made it hard to recognize at first. Neat looking machine, just not my style in my old age.....
  25. Hey everyone. I'm the proud new owner of a 2008 Venture. YAY! But the previous owner must not have liked the tank emblems and he removed them. So..... to me the bike looks a little naked. Anyone have some tank emblems that they would like to sell? Any help sure would be appreciated! Thanks, Jim Garner
