  1. Hi Folks.....I just got a 83 Venture Royale about a month ago. In the process of putting it up for the winter I removed the battery today. It is a walmart Energizer branded battery with a sensor on it. I have never owned a bike that used one of these sensors before and I have a couple of questions about it. It seems to be part of the battery and I don't want to break it by trying to pull it off....when I replace the battery should it be removed and installed on the new one or does a replacement battery already have one with it? Also can I use a replacement battery without a sensor? I've included a pic below. Thanks in advance..... http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/Tarl-Saxon/100_0401.jpg
  2. Thought I would share this. This happened to me about half way through our 350 miles of rain on the way to Bogalusa. The next day I went through all the connections and found them to be still clean, dry of water and greased with dielectric grease just as I had done a year ago. Symptom: Any audio source from speakers is severely distorted. The distortion is so bad you can not understand anything. This initially occurs at a volume setting of about 18 or above which is my normal cruzin' level. If the level is kept around 10 or so, it sounds ok for a while but eventually becomes distorted. All the while the head set audio is clear. The dealer has ordered a replacement audio amp unit (warranty) after confirming with Yamaha that is is a known symptom. Just as a side note, the retail cost for the replacement is $1400.
  3. I seen the Flander bars and the kit they sale to replace cables on a 07 RSTD. I really want to do this for a more comfortable riding position. My question is how difficult 1-10 is this to do one self. I guess my biggest challenge is the cable replacement especially the brake and throttle. Is this a straight forward job? Should I take it the stealer? Any recommendations would be welcomed. Thanks
  4. I had a pair of these on my Vstar 650. Lots of open places to mount them, and they were LOUD at 109 Db. Reasonably priced and the pair only draws 6 amps. I'm thinking about trying to install a pair in the passing lamp light bar area or near the air deflectors on the forks where they would be out in the open and not muffled by a fairing or cowling. It may take fabricating some different mounting brackets, but it looks like it's doable. Comments? http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/AFI-10001/ Oops, tried to insert a pic but it didn't work. :Venture:http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/AFI-10001/graphics/00000001/AFI-10001_med.jpg
  5. Does anyone have a dead TCI that they would donate to me. I will gladly pay shipping. I tried the diode repair to my TCI and I am uncertain of the results. I used too high a wattage solder iron to remove diodes and damaged the circuit board traces somewhat. I obtained a second one that was very corroded and tried the replacement of diodes again and they looked much better, but due to corrosion of unit I believe it is unserviceable. Any 83 to 89 units that are laying around would be appreciated. I will open any donated one up and see if the diode degradation was possibly the reason for the unit failure. I can get the replacement diodes for about $5.00 to try and repair. This is a somewhat difficult procedure to replace these diodes, but after 2 practice tries, I am getting better at it. I believe I can use a post 84 on my present 1200 engine. I have the correct vacuum line to use on the post 84 units. Also I am anticipating getting a 1300 engine in the next week or so. PM me if you can help !! Gary
  6. Can anyone give me a lead on where to buy replacement speakers for my 1989 Venture Royale?
  7. Looks like another way to keep from working out. http://gajitz.com/segwhat-adult-power-wheel-is-slightly-less-nerdy-option/
  8. Some time ago I read about someone changing the locking mechanism on their Piggybacker XL but can't seem to find the post. The cylinder on mine broke in half and fell out during vacation this year and I must come up with a replacement. The lock is probably the weakest feature of the trailer and I had planned to eventually replace it. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you fix it? Thanks! Don
  9. My 2007 RSV doesn't have a tool kit. Looking at this as a replacement http://www.jcwhitney.com/CRUZTOOLS-ROADTECH-TOOL-KITS/GP_2015279_N_111+20000110+600014236_10111.jcw How does this compare with the OEM kit?
  10. Good Morning! I have a 2004 RSV with the factory light bar / driving lights. [The sealed beam lights] I know I asked the group the question about replacing the lights to get more light output before, but I can't find the thread or the answer ... Someone from this group told me about replacement sealed beam lights that are brighter than the factory lights, about the same wattage, and nearly plug and play. UH, they were from .... ????? J & S, J & P, I don't recall and can't find it here or even with a google search. Thanks!
  11. My sister-in-law just had a hip replacement and finds herself uncomfortable on the back of their 650 Yamaha star classic. She has asked me to locate a replacement bike with a side car. So, if anyone knows of a bike with side car for sale, Yamaha, Honda, etc. let me know Please.. Dave

  13. Is there an easily obtainable replacement for the clutch bleed screw? Mine has been rounded and probably should be replaced the next time I bleed the clutch. I see in BikeBandit that I can get a replacement assembly (with the rubber cover) for $19 and change. Is there a better option?
  14. If anyone has a take-off shock from the RSV that they would consider donating, please let me know. It will be analyzed and probably taken apart and I wouldn't expect it to be returned, but we may end up with a good alternative to the Works shock to replace the Yamaha OEM shock on the 2nd gens. It would be good to have another option, right? Anyway, I have a contact who has a suspension shop and he has done some great work building shocks for other bikes (Ducati, KLR650, DR650, SV650, and Honda TransAlp). He is located in North Carolina and is well respected in the road racing and dual sport community. This is a small family business and he rides and races bikes himself. I have one of his "moab" custom shocks on my KLR650 and I love it. Everyone who has one has nothing but praise for the work that he has done giving the 400+ pound pig some manners in the dirt. He can't promise anything, but when I talked to him about my failing shock and the replacement options (oem and Works afaik) we discussed the possability of him coming up with a replacement. He would need to examine an oem shock to determine what he can do and what he would recommend. I believe that if he was able to build a replacement, it would be a good one! There is also a chance he could come up with a modification or re-manufacturing process for the oem shocks. It all depends on him getting a look at the oem shock. Thanks! James
  15. Can the front brake pads be checked without taking the calipers off or apart? I don't know exactly what I am looking at or for. Is there a measuremet that would indicate the pads need replacement? Thanks, Jim
  16. I decided to change the garage door opener today. I had an ancient opener on the second door and recently put a new opener on my first door. The one I took down I inspected and found that all it needed was a new drive gear. $8.50 on ebay - I took the old gear out and replaced it, check and all was good to go. Here comes the stupid part 4 months ago I had a total right knee replacement and things were going OK. I wasn't totally happy with the results but life goes on right ? I could ride my Venture 2 up safely so what more does a guy want ? While on the ladder I removed the blots from the old drive unit and started down the ladder. I obviously forgot how to count because as I stepped down with my good leg to the floor level I realized that my bad knee was still on the SECOND step of the ladder. Normally that would not be a problem BUT the bad knee was the one that was just replaced. When I could open my eyes thru the pain I saw that I had bent my replacement knee more than the Dr. said I would ever be able to. So there I stand with a 20 or 25 lb. drive unit in both hands, my leg bent were it shouldn't be and nobody home. I managed to get into the house and lay down on the floor long enough to quit sweating and regain a regular breathing rate. With the help of left-over pain medicine (I dislike the word DRUGS) and some ice most of the swelling has gone down. So perhaps one good thing did come of the incident after all. I still have a small job to complete for tomorrow ? or whenever I gather enough courage to get on a ladder again. AND -- it looks like I may have gotten a LOT more range of motion in my replacement knee. Life is good and God is GREAT !!
  17. I need a jet block gasket. Don't know if replacements are available or if I can repair. Let me know how to repair or where to get a replacement. I'm including pics. Thanks.
  18. Anyone know a good site to buy a replacement brake light cover for the RSV?
  19. Probably an old thread but for a part that requires frequent replacement (owners manual) This is incredible. I have spent over an hour and am only more frustrated. I can see it ,I can barely get two fingers on the top and wiggle it bit --what ever is holding the boot (which I can't see, won't budge and I am afraid to muscle it. There was another black rubber clip above it which O removed from a bright metal clip but that did not help and now I can't get a hold of that to put it back on. All three access panels are off// fuel pump is unbolted and slack -battery is out What the heck gives-- I have not removed the coolant contanier yet--and am now looking for a cutting torch. This is nuts especially since all wrenching to get to it was so easy. I only have the (just enough info to get ya in trouble) owners manual. The doctor has told me the stitches in my hand can come out in 6 weeks but the bump on my forehead from hitting my head against the wall may take longer. What am I doing wrong? Please help Thanks in advance--Ed--2000 venture salsa red:think:
  20. I will be at the Skid In this year and will have tools and equipment as well as parts for the Needle Mod, Carb. Diaphragm Replacement, Radiator Drain Upgrade, Replacement Side Cover Pins, Fuse Box Upgrade Kits and Carb. Syncs. As time permits I am willing to help any member Install any of these mods on a first come first served basis. If you are interested in having any work done please post here and you will be at the top of the list. I will make sure that I have all of the parts and tools with me to do the very best job possible. It is a pleasure to work on the bikes belonging to the members of this site and who wouldn't like to ride their bike home in better condition than when they rode it there. Earl
  21. Does anyone have an extra knob that fits the CB radio on a lst Edition? I am missing one and would gladly pay someone for whatever it may be worth to them (PayPal). I probably could find a replacement at an electronics place, but I doubt it would match. T Thanks
  22. Well Dudes and Dudettes, Wizard of Wheels in Crete IL still hasn't returned my parts. It's been almost a year and I got so fed up I bought a new Goldwing. However, I'd still like to get the RSV running so that I can sell it, turn it into a chopper, or something fun. I searched high and low and finally figured out how to contact Yamaha Corporation headquatered in California. My idea was to get a parts list complete with prices, purchase the parts I need to at least get the bike running, and then sue the dealer for the total cost of replacement parts. Well, it seemed like a good idea, but was quickly shut down as Yamaha has a policy of not selling body parts to individuals -- only dealers! So, not only have I been royally screwed by the owner of Wizard of Wheels in Crete IL, but now I'm going to have to go to another dealer and pay a higher replacement price for what I need! This is wrong on many levels and it's making me crazy. So, if anyone has a bead on a pair of lower cowlings for a 99 RSV, please contact me. The bike will not run correctly without those two plastic pieces. There was a pair on eBay, but the price had an automatic bid attached and I wasn't going to get sucked into a bidding war with an unknown buyer. chuck
  23. Does anyone know if you need to use the impact wrench to retighten the allen bolts in the end of the fork tubes after seal replacement
