  1. Well I'm finally getting the dreaded chirp noise on my 02 midnight. With about 11 k miles on it I guess as time goes on it will get more pronounced. Checked with the dealer about the basket change and he said the noise can still be there but may move to a different rpm and speed, but most likely won't go away. I will admit it is getting quite annoying, even my wife is noticing it to. I've had the bike almost 3 years and have tried to really like the bike, but just can't seem to get it to grow on me if you know what I mean, and now this. I like the bike for the power, comfort, and roominess, but I just can't get a liking to this bike. Was over at the dealer last week and they have an 07 on the lot on consignment, nice bike, low miles, I asked why it was for sale and the sales guy said he really didn't know the guy just wants to sell it. I've considerd selling mine last fall and now the whine issue may be the deciding factor this year, if I can only convince my wife as she likes the bike. I've been using Amsoil 10w40 since I've had it and what is the opinions on going to a heavier oil or back to dino oil ? will it quiet the chirp? Dealer says the repairs parts and labor would be around 400.00. but it may or may not cure it. Bike is out of warranty so that's not an issue. Not sure what to do at this point, any suggestions or opinions may be helpfull, thanks...
  2. I recently just purchased a 2008 Rstd that was brand new left over with no miles on it. I drove it back from Arkansas to ohio which was about 800 miles and dumped the oil and put Aims oil in it. Immediately i noticed i tick noise when the motor was cold and when it warmed it didnt notice it as much. So took it to a local Yamaha dealer and he heard it as well and notified his rep. and they answered him that the covers around the motor enhance the motor noise sound. They took notice and wrote it down as a complaint of mine but thats as far as i got. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do beyond this? I know that manual says 26,000 miles valve adjustment is needed but i dont want to pay for an adjustment if i have too? any suggestions or thoughts about this?
  3. Trying to get a feel of how far we go between changes. I have used the Rotella about 10k now, changing every 5k. I am sure I could go a little longer, but by 5k, I begin to hear my shifitng. Fresh oil = less noise and smoother shifting.

  5. For those of you with a modular helmet AND headsets...any problems with radio or intercom because of wind noise? I've always worn a full face & just bought a set of HJC Symax II modular helmets. I knew modulars had more wind noise than a fullface, but after a test ride tonight in 20mph breeze, there's quite a bit more noise...so much in fact that I'm wondering if installing new J&M headsets is going to give decent results or be a waste of time. I'm guessing others out there are using a similar setup successfully but just wanted to verify while I can still return the helmets for refund if I choose.
  6. There seems to be a lot of discussion about the Bridgestones and road noise. I do have a noise issue that I am not sure is the rear tire. Between 40-50 MPH (loudest around 42-44) there is a howl from the rear end that I think is the tire but not sure. Just went over 1000 miles. I started noticing it around 700 miles but it could have been there earlier. Not as loud, or almost absent, the first 5 miles then it is there. Taking it to the dealer on Monday to check rear end fluid level but it was fine at the 600 mile change and there is nothing on the ground or wheel. It is more anyoning than anything else. It is defintely a howl and not a whine.
  7. I've been reading about a couple other noises and it got me thinking about my 06 RSTD and the kind of honking noise it makes when its iding higher than normal cold with the choke half on. It has a kind of rythem and is not there once I shut the choke off and its at a normal rpm. Any ideas?
  8. After our WNY meet and eat last weekend , my wife commented to me as we were almost home that she thought she heard a noise from the rear wheel. So I quieted the stereo about 90 decibels and listened. Yup , definately a growl between 40-55 mph accel or decel. Not horrible but certainly noticeable. Feel nothing in the seat no roughness. Could be the tire howling a bit or internal. This is my 2nd RSV and its new with about 600 miles on it. I am positive my last one did not make this noise, although maybe I didn't hear it over the whine.......Any thoughts? (Fluids full , tire pressure is spot on, rear hub was not hot to the touch)
  9. For nearly as long as I have had my 07 Venture, it has had an annoying rattley buzzy noise on the right side behind me and a little down. Drove me nuts, when I would throttle up or let off if would rattle. You know one of those noises that you hate, you know it is not serious, but bugs the crap out you. Checked everything on the right side to see if they were tight, multple times, never found anything lose. Pulled he right Kromewerks slipon muffler off, nothing in there, plus it did not really sound like a metalic noise anyway. It was always associated with throttle on or off, but I could not get it to sound off unless I was riding, never heard it when the engine was raced and the bike stationary. Today it was worse than ever, when I got home I was able to hear it while on the side stand in he garage. When I would put my fingers on the right rear speaker grill the noise would stop, remove my finger noise comes back. "HA Got you" I said to myself. Looked inside for some foriegn object (FO for you USAF guys) nothing. So I start to pull plastic parts off, nothing, so when I put things back together, I put a small piece of adhesive backed foam ruber betwen the speaker gill and the frame it mounts to behind the passenger seat. Took it for a short test run, no noise. Plan on taking an all day ride tommorrow, that should tell me if it finally fixed or not. Here is for hoping.
  10. Well, after 485 days in Iraq, it's time to resume my old life and start where I left off. I look forward to seeing the family on a daily basis, playing with the grandkids, walking barefoot in the green grass, and of course, riding my Venture with my lovely wife. I only got to ride about 2 weeks total since i left, and can't wait to grab some throttle and let the pipes make some noise. I hope to be able to make some rallies and M/E's this year. Thanks for your prayers and best wishes, they have certainly helped. Hope to see some of you soon and make new friends in the coming year. Mike
  11. I have a small knocking noise when the scoot sits in neutral with the clutch out. When i squeeze the clutch it will go away. This is just starting to happen. Is there an adjustment that might be out.Only thing I have done different is change the oil.(rotella 15/45) I did change the 6003 bearing because it started to make noise.
  12. I need to put my mind as ease a little. Without getting into much detail and risk maligning the RSV folks, I want to compare bikes for sound and feel. I'm wondering how much engine vibration I should be feeling and how much noise I should be hearing. Being this bike was bought "untested" I'm a tad paranoid! So if anyone is in the Calgary area and could help a guy out I be obliged!
  13. How hard is it to change the bearing on the clutch. What I thought was a bad fan noise must of been the bearing. It sounded like it was coming from the front.I went on a 40 mile ride today and the longer i went the more noise it made. It would stop when I stopped. Also it makes a small clunking sound when it is in ideal with clutch out.I did see it takes a 6003 bearing from earlier thread. All is not bad though i finally get a job interview after one year off of work.It is for our public service company.NIPSCO Do they count off for spelling on here throwout bearing------have no clue why i put through
  14. It is winter and I'm still hearing a whining noise! Oh, that's these people in Iowa who are whining about all the snow we have this year!
  15. How much wining noise should I get at 65 mph???
  16. Ok all you experts; I have a couple questions concerning replacing the motor in my 86 with a motor from an 89. I am of the opinion that the original motor either has a piston slap or some other type of subtle knocking noise only on deceleration. I am quite certain the knocking is there when riding but due to other noise I cannot distinguish this particular knocking from all the other noise. The knocking noise is quite noticeable when the motor is at normal operating temp and when still. Doesn't matter if the tranny is in neutral or any other gear. Anyway, the bike is in otherwise outstanding condition and looks almost new. So, I found another really good motor from an 89 that will be going in (41K miles). Here is my question: 1) Since the replacement is coming without carbs, will the carbs from the 86 mount and operate without any issues? I think they will but would like to hear other opinions. 2) I believe all the electronics are the same but what other concerns or issues might I be overlooking? Thanks for the advise.
  17. Before I proceed to the stealers does anybody have a suggestion on an after market noise filter for an 90VR radio/cb part#INL88188-00 MOD# FR-88-34S0372 THANKS Stewart :canada:
  18. I cut 5 inches off of my stock windshield. It looks really good and I can see over it at night (big improvement). My problem is now there is quite a bit of wind turbulence (noise) on the top of my helmet. I am 6'2" with a 35 inch inseam. I have a double-bubble on my ZX11D7 and it really reduced wind noise. Does anyone make a double-bubble style windshield for the Gen I VR?
  19. Just thinking, my cell phone has a in-the-ear speaker/mic. I was wondering is anyone ever hear on these speaker/mics for motorcycle applications? It would seem to be to be the best way to talk without wind noise. Mark:250:

    Tinnitus

Tinnitus (or "ringing in the ears") is sound or noise that no one but the person with the condition can hear. The noise can be constant or come in short bursts, lasting for long periods of time or just briefly. The sound can be loud or soft, can change in pitch and can be heard in either one or both ears. Each person who has tinnitus can probably describe it in a different way. Doctors estimate that over 50 million people in the United States suffer from some type of tinnitus and about one-quarter of them are uncomfortable enough to look for relief. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone here suffer from this? What have you done about it?
  21. daviddebbybianchi@yahoo.comI have a 2008 RSV and have had many radio/cb/tape deck/ intercom problems from the day I bought it new a year ago. The dealer has been very understanding and has tried everything Yamaha has allowed them to do' The problems are these, Enging ignition noise (spark plug noise) in the intercom, the tape deck shorted out, the cb is now give a CB/ERR message on the display when it is turned on. So far the cb has been replaced, the controller replaced(3 time over the year) the wire harness from the controller to the cb was replaced and still the problem has not been repaired.I think the problem could be in the main wire harness for the bike. Has anyone had this problem and if so what was done to correct it.
  22. I just bought a 2006 Venture so far I really like the bike. My concern is an engine noise at certain RPM when crusing--that is when I am not speeding up or slowing down. In 5th gear its about 65 MPH. The noise is also heard in othr gears at lower speeds but only when not speeding up or slowing down--just crusing along. My thinking is that it may be the timing chain. My bike has 26 M miles on it. This may be normal for the engine but since by other bike is a V Twin I am not sure what are the normal noises for this engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Eagle77----new member
  23. Okay here's one i've never heard here before. Since I've had my 85 there has been an intermittent noise like a bad bearing somewhere in the front end. I finally located the noise as coming from my speedometer. It happens most on cold mornings and is high pitched and at times so loud it leaves my ears ringing when if finally stops. It used to stop after i got below 15 mph. Now it will continue until the bike is fully stopped. It will stop after a few miles and then only periodically return while riding before stopping all togther. I pulled the speedometer cable and oiled and greased it . I checked the ends for wear but there is none. So its not the cable it has to be in the speedo itself. What the heck could it be and is there some way to fix it without having to replace the speedo all together? Its so loud that my son could hear it while riding beside me as we rode through town. Help!
  24. Just purchased an 88 Venture with 60K miles, history is fairly unknown but bike is clean. Clutch slips so replaced with Barnett plates and their spring kit. Clutch had, and still has, a pretty loud thumping when idling in neutral. Quiets down somewhat with lever pulled in and is smooth at >2K rpms. Like glass on the road. I noticed the outer clutch basket was fairly wobbly when I pulled the clutch pack out, maybe 1/4 - 3/8 inch depending on how it was measured. Looking around for pictures there seems to be a pressed bushing instead of a replaceable bearing for this surface. Reading other threads I deduce that this type of noise may be normal for these older Ventures. Seems there could be an issue down the road (and possibly a serious rear wheel lockup) if this wobble continues to deteriorate. Of course with the clutch pack installed you can't detect the wobble, it tightens everything up. New basket PN# 26H-16150-00-00 PRIMARY DRIVEN GEAR COMP is upwards of $300 which I'm OK with if it will prevent a problem down the road but I can live with the noise if it is a known common problem that is just noise. Any opinions from veteran high mileage venture riders? Thanks from a Venture newbie.
  25. Im sure that some one else has had something closr... When I use the front brakes and I come to a full stop and squeze a little harder the brakes make a noise sounds a little like the chirping that I,ve been reading about... Is there any way to get rid of it ... It seems to get a little loud after awhile Ron:cool10:
