  1. i think i have figured out the source of the chirp in the primary gears on yamahas. this gets tecnical. my rstd had the chirp about as bad as it gets. both my v-star 1100 and my 1300 in particular, have a terrible amount of primary gear noise. i always attributed it to the straight cut gears which are the noisyest gear pattern there is. my wing has straight cut primary gears and they are totally quiet. my 1600 nomad has straight cut gears and has a barely audible hum. you have to consentrate to hear it. i always figured gearlash either to loose or to tight was the main cause. this will make a difference in the noise level, but i think the real cause is the curvature on the face of the gear teeth. yamaha has picked a pitch that just happens to make noise. the only real fix in my opinion is to go to their engineers and have them try different pitches on the surface of the gear teeth untill they hit the right combo. or go to honda and kawa. to see what pitch they use. just my opinion. i think the clutch basket change is just a bandaid. it tightens the clearance up to a sweet spot that may or may not last depending on tooth wear. think about this the tranny gears don't sound off, and they are all straight cut.
  2. Has anyone here ever stuck a 2ndGen 1300 motor into a 1stGen?? If so, how'd you get around the shift linkage?? Looks like the 2nd goes thru the middle gear cover instead of the stator cover like on a 1st.
  3. Just curious if any member uses electrically heated riding gear on A lst Edition? I have had a full set of Warm Gear sold by Cozy Winters for some time but have never used it. I am planning on a Big Bend Texas ride next month and I expect the weather will get pretty darn cool, low to mid thirties and would like to use at least part of the gear. I was thinking bout using only the jacket (100 watts) and the socks (40 watts) and am not sure that would over tax the charging system of a lst Gen. Since most riding will be during day light hours, no other electrical accessories will be used (driving lights). Any advise?
  4. I have a 06 midnight RSV that will only go in to first and not any other gear. I went to two dealers who have never seen this before. I was on the road and stopped for gas and that is when it happened. I pulled back on to the road and bike would not go un to second gear. I went to the local dealer where I was and he checked the linkage and did a basic look over and he determined the issue was internal. I also lost my head light and tail light but I do have blinkers and flashers. Anyone have this issue. Thanks Jeffers:mytruck1:
  5. Got in last night about 3am.... BURRR is all I can say. Got in some good riding while in TN. Put on close to 1k miles and saw some beautiful land. Rode the bike back into KY but the temp dropped and I didn't have the gear for cold weather with me. So, she got loaded back up and we trucked it home. I really hate Michigan....
  6. OK...it's not a serious problem and not even one that I'm going to spend a lot of time trying to track down. I am almost sure though that my cruise once worked in 4th and 5th gear. For a long time now though, it only works in 5th gear. I would seldom have a need to use it in 4th gear anyway but am curious as to whether or not I am just wrong in thinking that it used to work in 4th or if something is wrong. I briefly looked at the service manual yesterday and didn't immediately recognize where it gets the signal for what gear you are in. I'm thinking that maybe it comes from the TCI and if so, maybe it stopped working when I installed the Dyna3000. I could put the old TCI back on and test it but don't know that it's important enough for me to go to the trouble.
  7. I am curious. I have seen several posts about gear to stay warm when riding in colder weather, but nothing about gear for the warmer states. I would like gear that breathes a LOT. Considering in southern Louisiana, there is the constant race between the barometer and themometer as to which one reaches triple digits first. While I don't mind the net looking stuff, my wife finds it very uncomfortable - itchy to be exact. So I am open to most any suggestions. I just want some protection in case something unfortunate happens in the hot weather. Thanks,
  8. I had several things planned to do today, but it rained buckets and my power went out, so Karen suggested we go shopping for helmets. I had bought an intercom system for the bike and we needed something other than our regular half helmets to mount the headsets in. We found helmets we liked and hooked up everything, and like any other kid I had to try out the new toy. We suited up in rain gear and took off. The IMC intercom worked great, and for the first time my wholesome honey and I could converse while we rode. We stayed dry with the gear on and had a great ride. In fact the rain made it just cool enough that it was the best ride we've had in a while. I may have to ride in the rain more often.
  9. I've been riding a Honda VTX 1300 for the last 5 years and a Honda Magna before that. Been thinking about one of these rolling lounge chairs for awhile now and finally broke down and bought an 09 RSV on the 11th of this month. Well, Ma nature decided to give north Ga. a 500 year flood 2 days later and it's been sitting in the garage every since. The skys cleared and we had a chance to christen her Thursday and Friday. Took off for western NC to find out what this recliner could do. Holy sport bike Bat Man! I had no idea a full dresser (other than a wing) would be so nimble. I think I'm in love with 3rd gear. What a wounderfull gear. pulling strong from around 30mph up to around 70mph. HOLY................. Of coarse I'm not saying anything Y'all dont know but DAYUM. I think I'm gona like this bike.
  10. I am really serious about purchasing a full set of heated riding gear; jacket, pants, gloves and socks. I have reviewed several brands; some ridiculously costly and some reasonably priced. So, what sort of advise can members provide in terms of what they have and how they rate their gear. I am leaning towards "Warm Gear" sold by Cozy Winters. As far as what I've read, this "Warm Gear" is specially manufactured for motorcycles. Ok, let me have it.
  11. So... I got to Jonesing for a new bike. I was looking hard at the new Triumph Rocket III Touring. Test rode it for about 30 miles yesterday. I loved the power, the way it handled, and sooooo smooth. However, there's a LOT of hot air coming off the radiator and headers. In winter it would be great...summer would be a killer. Then I rode the Triumph Thunderbird....new 1600cc parallel twin. It was Surprisingly strong...would give the Rocket Tourer (not the classic) a good run. But it felt too small and light for Interstate riding. Plus it got real buzzy at highway speeds even with the 6th gear. So...this morning I went and rode a new 1700 Kaw Nomad. I have owned a 2000 Nad and loved it. The one I rode today ran pretty well, rode and handled nicely, but had an awful gear whine, which was a deal breaker for me. My RSTD whines but not like that. Anyway, I brought the RSTD home and will probably put 2 new tires on it and ride it a while longer until something else like a really nice Valk Interstate comes along.
  12. Everything seems to be running fine on my 97 RSTD, however I recently installed a windshield, which allows me to hear the engine noise much better. When I reach 3rd gear, I hear an "intermitant tapping" sound. It doesn't occur in any other gear and is not a bang or a grind, but can be best described as if I had hung a very small pebble by a long string and let it bounce underneath, occasionally tapping against the bike. It is a very mild sound, and sometimes can even be heard if I pull the clutch in at that gear.... I am wondering what it could be? Any thoughts
  13. Hi, What is the approximate cost of parts to do the second gear repair these days? Not the labor, just parts. Thanks, Brian H.
  14. Gear position Indicator upgradefor standard Ventures (Non-Royales) I have installed a gear position indicating system on my 1983 Venture. This is the stock model without the dash readout from the factory. This is the second Venture I have owned. The first one was a 1984 Royale. Two of the things I really miss from that bike were the gear indicator and the cruise control. The cruise control is coming later. I have all of the stock parts now needed to install it. I obtained a Neutral Switch Assembly from a 1984 Venture Royal through an Ebay auction for under $10.00. This assembly will exchange with the stock neutral switch assembly from a standard Venture. The neutral switch assembly is located between the back end of the stator cover and the front of the middle drive. It sets back in about four inches and is difficult to see, but is accessible. Removal of the middle drive cover is needed to access. To indicate what gear the bike is in I mounted three LED lights in the gauge cluster above the volt gauge. The left light is lit it indicates 1st gear. The left light and the center lights lit indicate 2nd gear. The center light lit indicates 3rd gear. The center light and right lights lit indicate 4th gear. The left light lit indicates 5th gear. The neutral light works as normal. In neutral none of the LED’s are lit. I could also use five LED’s, using one for each gear, but I like the 3 light system as it is easy to see and once familiar with the pattern, it is very easy to determine what gear I am in with a quick glance down at the gauges. I initially used a red, green and amber LED’s but the green and amber had poor visibility in the daytime. I replaced with all red ones. I also painted the part of the LED’s that are inside of the cluster with black paint to keep the light from the instrument cluster from bleeding through the LED’s translucent housing. I used four diodes and three LED’s from radio shack for the light logic circuit. Four IN4004 rectifier diodes. Price $.99 for two Three Red LED assemblies. Price $1.99 each The new Neutral Switch Assembly has a six pin plug on the end that sets in the same area that the stator and rectifier plugs are near the fuel pump. I had two spare diode assemblies that I have obtained in the past and used the plug from one of these to mate up with the plug on the Neutral Switch cable. I had to take one extra wire connector from the second diode assy. As the diode assembly plug only used five wires. You do not need to use this connector if you do not want to though. I retained this plug as I will be replacing the wiring harness when I install the cruise control. I put the diodes in the circuit near the plug connections on the end of the neutral switch assy. I then ran three 18 gauge wires up to the instrument cluster. I used a trailer four conductor plug I had to make a connection at the instrument panel. I have attached a PDF file with pictures and a wiring schematic to install this.
  15. what rear end gear oil do you thanks best. its time to change mine and looking for what works best on a gen 2
  16. I need to find out about a Reverse Gear For A 1986 Venture Royale Trike. I am disabled in my right leg and find it really hard to back up without getting off and pushing it back.
  17. yesterday i was leaving my little rural town headed for the bigger city 32 miles down the road. i was sitting at the last red light in town with a PTCruiser next to me - the light turned green. i was no more thinking about racing than the man in the moon. reaching nornal end of first gear, i pulled in the clutch when this PTCruiser comes roaring up ( not really roaring, but doing its best) with that "I am gonna take you on" attitude. i know the driver can't see the smile on face, but it is there as i think "WTF is this?" thank goodness for the gradually getting faster speed limits heading out of town. as i nailed the throttle - hit 2nd gear on up, i saw the PTC get smaller in my mirror till it disappeared. all this in a matter of about, oh, 5 seconds. What is the deal with some drivers? anyone have a similar experience? Dale in Louisiana
  18. I am curious as to how many here have owned 83-84 ventures and lost 2nd gear and at what mileage and those that had no problems?
  19. Yesterday during a group ride, I ment to throw her in second gear to catch up with the group leader but accidentally put her into first instead. I discovered these first gens have enough power to flip ya on your back. You should have seen the looks on all those HD riders faces. One of them said he could've walked under the front wheel. I could just imagine the look on my face! All I remember thinking was, OH:yikes:SH**! She came down kind of hard. But no damage. Other than some to my shorts. Glad I put in those progressive spring when I rebuilt the frontend.
  20. Hmm twice now, 1st time it happened almost cost me an accident involvement and tonight it happened again but just a puzzlement. The first time I wasn't sure what had happened but twice? Hmm here's what is happening, hopefully someone could lead me in the right direction for help.. 1st time it happened, I was cruising along at 60 to 70 mph in 5th, and went to pass a car (2 lanes same direction) but out in behind of me a sports car traveling super fast came up on me very fast.. wow, caught ME by surprise! So I dropped the hammer in 5th gear and there was a very noticeable lack of acceleration and a higher rev of the engine and eventually, things started to speed up.. This wasn't the typical too high a gear for the need, it was different. 2nd time this happened, I was cruising along at 55-65 mph in 5th.. just needed to scoot around a slow moving vehicle so I dropped it in 4th and dropped the hammer... and the same thing happened.. wow.. I've never felt this with any of the bikes I've owned and I'm thinking that perhaps my clutch is dying (why not, everything else on this bike has eventually died and been replaced lol).. I climbed Mount Washington no probs, and the bike slows down properly with engine de-acceleration.. I cannot duplicate this symptom in low gear.. like dropping the hammer in first gear doesn't give me the same symptoms but it's not as spirited as when I discovered my rev limiter a while back.. So, what do you think is wrong here, and what are my options to get this working properly again? No warranty on the bike here in Canada but there is when I visit the USA. Thanks in advance!
  21. Well, here is the start of what I hope will be a great story. Actually the story began last year when I took delivery of my brand new (2006) RSTD. I had been on the fence for over a year, whether to go Venture, or RSTD. When I found an amazing deal on the bike, the choice was clear. I even was ok with the plain white color, as I knew I had plans for her. Many of you have commented on my custom skull helmet, which is in my profile pic. That helmet was done by a very good friend of mine from North Bay Ontario, about a 4.5 hour ride from me in Hamilton. Some of you may remember I had the chance to do a rain gear review, when I had to drive hom 4.5 hours in a downpour from there last year. Well, the time has come for the transformation to begin. I am going away to Las Vegas for 2 1/2 weeks, so the perfect time to get my bike up to the shop for paint. Again, they called for rain all day on Wed for my ride up. I got up early, donned my rain gear, and began to prepare for a crappy ride. The rain had not started yet, but the clouds were ominous. I set out, glad for every mile I got that was dry. The miles added up quickly. I stopped after an hour for gas and some food, still no rain, but it looked like it was ready to come down any time. I set out again, dry, and after 90 min, the sun came out, and it warmed right up. I had outrun the rain!! I talked to some friends back in the Hammer, and it was pouring. The joke was on me, I rode 2 1/2 hours in dry weather, wearing rain gear. Oh well, took off the gear, and the liner for my jacket, and set out for a very dry ride to my destination. Got to North Bay, dropped by to visit the guys, and arranged to meet up with them at the shop to start disassembly of the bike. 4 of us worked together and stripped the bike down. I discussed with the painter some ideas, but as we left it, I am just to be impressed when I pick it up. That is pretty much it, I am leaving it up to him. He is a good friend, and a great artist. This is his first motorcycle, although he is very well regarded for the many cars he has airbrushed over many years. I know what some of the elements he is putting on, but mostly it will be a surprise. Here are some pics of the process so far. I asked him to take pictures during the paint process, and I will add them to this thread when I get the bike back. I am very excited about this. My first bike was pretty much the same the day I sold it, as the day I bought it. This bike, will be a total transformation. Here are some pictures of my naked bike. Sonny
  22. Question for the 1st Gen Gear experts. Just took a trip to Sturgis and was going about 75 for fthe first 140 miles. Surprising I ran out of gas at 140 miles. That is under 30 mpg. When I went 60-65 I got 41-42. Couple comments and questions on this. My bike is a 1983. I think the speed limit was 55 in that day so I am also thinking that the gearing was probably appropriate. It really doesn't seem to work in the 75 mph range though. If I am getting into the gears, is it possible to replace the 5th gear with a larger gear that would be more suitable for 75mph. I am assuming that I can't add a sixth gear. Appreciate your insight. Bob
  23. I just bought an 84 Venture, with 50,000 miles 80,000 km 2nd gear works fine. Is there a way to tell if it's been replaced?
  24. I bought this kit that had a quart of Penzoil marine gear lube 80W-90 GL5 mainly because I wanted the pump that came with it. The whole kit was $5. Is there any difference between marine gear lube and regular gear lube? What I currently use in the rear end of the bike is regular 80W-90 GL5, so my thought is I should be able to use this stuff meant for marine use. Same weight and they both have the GL5 rating... Anyone with any knowledge on this?
  25. Here's the background. 1999 RSV 2nd gen, 115.000 miles. Orginal clutch. I was going up a mountain, lost 5th gear, downshifted to 4th, lost it, lost all gears by the top of the mountain. Was able to get bike in neutral. Seemed to still shift. Replaced the clutch housing, boss, gears. Started in neutral and put in first gear (as far as I know). Released the clutch to see if bike would go forward. Surged like it was in fifth gear and died. Now clutch lever is locked and will not pull in and can't shift gears. Any suggestions? Thanks.
