  1. I've seen several discussions of wider vs narrower tires on this forum. But I don't recall any discussion of changing the aspect ratio of the tires. tire width x aspect ratio = height of the tire. The stock rear tire on the 2nd gens is: 150/90-15 where 90 is the aspect ratio that determines how high the tire sits, and hence its circumference. Its also part of the overall gear ratio of the machine. ie: a taller tire is going to require fewer rpm's of the engine than a shorter tire (using the same transmission gear). This implies that a well worn tire will be 'geared' lower than a new tire... How about that? Lower aspect tires have less side wall flex than higher aspect tires, so may be considered stiffer. That might mean better in the twisties? A thought occired to me that one way to achieve a lower gear ratio, much as one does by using a Vmax rear end, could be achieved by using a slightly smaller aspect rear tire? Has anyone tried this? or even thought about it? This is also a possible alternative to installing lowering links.
  2. How do I remove the ring gear from the differential bearing housing? I need to adjust the backlash on the pinion gear. I have zero backlash as it is. This is an FJR rear end, but it is essentially the same as a 1st gen. There is a shim under ring gear I need to replace, as well as changing the thrust washer which is accessible. I have ring gear and bearing plate separated from main housing, does it need to be pressed out, or just lightly tapped out? Parts breakdown shows no retainer clips. Gary
  3. So I am tackling the 2nd gear issue on the old 1st gen and my question to ya'll is this, in order to get the split washers off of the shaft do I have to take the end NUT off first :think:or do I compress the spring with the NUT in place? It looks like a powerful spring so I dont want to test the old SAFETY GLASSES today...lol Thanks in advance:bowdown: Michael
  4. I am set to change my oil and filter and the final drive gear oil. I bought Valvoline SAE 10W30 (4 qts) and gear oil Valvoline Synthetic. I know we can use GL3, GL4, or GL5 grade gear oil that is SAE 80 as stated by the 'MOM'. I got the Valvoline Synthetic Gear oil but it is SAE 80W90, GL5 instead if just saying SAE 80. Is this ok to use on mt '07 Venture?
  5. ok, question for you folks, i have some ideas, but i also have alot of homework and want to get the opinions of the more educated masses here before i am able to do any testing. i have a rear wheel wobble/clicking it's verticle, as in, it moves up and down rather than side to side the problem occures: in neutral, or gear, regardless of gear. it is not RPM dependant it IS speed dependant (that is to say, it speeds up as i do, and slows down as I do) The rear brake quiets it (that is to say when i hit the brake, it gets softer, or at low speeds quits all together) things i have done recently: replaced the final drive oil with brand new 80w 90 replaced and balanced the rear tire repacked the rear splines (using 60% moly paste) i suspect that when i changed the tires, i warped the rotor a little, and that is why it is speed dependant and not rpm dependant. i would assume the easiest way to test that would be to remove the rear wheel, and run the bike through the gears on a stand with no wheel, no click, must be the wheel. any other suspicious things i should check? any known problems that sound similar? I really appreciate any feedback, guys, thanks!
  6. With all the highly intelligent members:stickinouttounge: here I was wondering if anyone has invented a reverse gear yet for the RSV??
  7. Hi I am going to look at an '87 Virago 1100, with 150kM / 93k miles, on Thurdsay evening. It sounds like a bargain, even despite its age, mileage and some mechanical issures. I just can't resist, even though I already have more bikes than I can afford to put on the road. I understand that the bike is aflicted with a starter problem common to the breed and that at present the starter does not engage at all. Also the bike has been in storage for a year or so and has no gas or oil in it at present. I am prepared for the fact that the bike needs some work but I would like to assure myself at the very least, that the engine is not siezed. What is the easiest way to do that at a pre sale inspection on someone elses turf when the starter is not available? http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad39/UxHamby/Virago1100/c1e731a4.jpg I am thinking that I could pull an engine cover to expose the end of the crank and then turn it with a socket wrench or I could get the bike rolling in an upper gear and pop the clutch and judge if it stops too quickly. Neither of these seem particularly doable away from home turf. If I put the bike on its centre stand, should I be able to turn the rear wheel by hand in an upper gear? Suggestions, advice, experience? Thanks, Brian H.

    Want to share this

I have a daughter that is 16, and forgot more than I will ever will know, we ll know that story. So I want to take her on some road trips with me this summer, ask her ride down the street with me and that way you can get a feel of it, she agree and she never been on a bike in her life, so I left the driveway went 1/4 to the stop sign, never got out of 2nd gear she scream slow down all the way then I made right turn hoping the feel would come to her, Nope 1/2 mile she was still scared again never got out of 3rd gear, went back home and she said never again, so her friend that has ridden got on we came back and she said that is the nicest seat and bike I ever been on. Look at my daughter and said I will text you while we ride and tell you what all you are missing.. Brittany shook her head and walk off...It was all in fun but I did learn she ain't gonna be riding wirth me....
  9. I know this has been batted around a little in the past, but I am wanting to convert my 83 engine with an 86 gear set in it to a 2nd gen gearset with wider spaced gears. I also want to go to a V-Max rear-end. I believe this would be the optimum setup for a 1st gen. It would give me a lower 1st gear with the V-Max rear and still have a better highway gear at 65mph. But, I am not sure the set would be a direct drop in like going from the 83 to 86 was. I may have the opportunity to pick one up and was just wanting to know if anyone knows why it would not work. 10. Anybody have an extra gear position indicator switch they want to part with? And how much you want for it? Need one for my 84. All I have is one for an 83. Thanks, Bill
  11. Hey Randy are you going after that gear set??
  12. Last summer, I picked up set of warn-n-safe gloves and jacket at the local shop on clearance. I then found out my bike couldn't handle the load so they just sat. Now that I have the new ride, I'd like to get them hooked up. So my question to those of you have this stuff, where do you mount the controller or should it just go in a pocket or something like that. Do you need to get at it very often? I know they have several different versions of the controller and I'm wondering which to get and how to hook it up.
  13. I recently bought a 1983 venture and when I test drove it it was pretty snowy so I never had a good chance to run through all of the gears. Later on I found that It wouldn't shift into 4th or 5th gear. It's like they just aren't there. It's my first bike so I am pretty new to this. I'm hoping to have it up and running for spring time. Anyone ever have this problem? I appreciate any help Trent
  14. Am looking at some mesh pants with liners for the coming season. Have looked pretty close at the TM Flex and they look good as well as the Fieldsheer. I got wind of a company called Sixth Gear and they have a mesh pant called Stinger. Looks good on line and about half the price of the TM. Anyone had any experience with these? Thanks for the input. Norm
  15. I've been looking for an oil leak and on removing the rear wheel I see oil leaking out of the middle gear dust cover. I suspect the oil seal needs repacing. ( part No 18 on the middle gear parts catalogue). Anybody got any ideas on doing this ? Jim O'D Australia.
  16. Just wondering if anyone has found a magic bullet for warm riding gear for the face. I have a good balaclava that does a good job but my forehead will start killing me within 30-60 minutes and I have to remove the thing. The fat head thing makes it get too tight in the helmet. I'd like to find something that I can wear around the neck and comes up to cover the chin area and even the nose if necessary. I rode today and the chin area was by far the coldest part on me.
  17. I'm looking for riding gear for my 6 year old son. He doesn't ride a lot yet but I want him to have good gear for the short rides we do. Where is a good site to buy kids jackets from? I'm probably going to get him an HJC offroad style helmet. That way he will have a chinbar for protection but not be as confined as a full face helmet can be.
  18. HI, I need a little help. I am considering a 1984 1200 Venture. It has about 70,000 kms or about 50,000 miles. The problem is 2nd gear. the owner, who was up front thankfully, said that when she rides it, She goes to shift to second gear and it jumps out. She simply shifts from 1st to 3rd. I am assuming the shift fork may be bent??? Any help would be a blessing I remember the old 1100 Maxims having a second gear issue/. Can this be fixed or does the entire engine need to come out? The person wants $1900.oo Merry Christmas Scott Canada
  19. When I sold my Harley and Got my RSTD (which I love-a much better machine than the Harley) I got to say, that the sixth gear on the Harley was a true overdrive. With my RSTD I find myself in fifth doing around 45 or so. I wish I had a tack so I can see the RPM's. So why not a real over drive. Does any of the Japanesse bike have it? Markr:240:
  20. 'Twas a bit before Christmas, when throughout Venture Land All the posters were nervous, Freebirds delete button close at hand The weather was cold and most were unable to bare The thought of not riding again soon would be there Most riders were nestled all snug in their beds While some planned trips all crazy in their heads With Squidley on his Harley and Lonna in her jammies The DQ was closed with no hope of any yummies When out on the road there arose such a clatter BongoBob heading south, rain and snow a splatter Away from the computer I moved like any guy Only to the kitchen for SleeperhawksMechanics pie The moon on my keyboard with a nice little glow Anxious to see what Yamaha brings to the next big show When what to my wondering eyes should appear But a picture of the new VENTURE all gussied up with gear With no extra cash and outa the click My stocking was empty, piss on St. Nick More rapid than eagles the spring events came Where we hope to meet more riders and know them by name Now, Ruffy! now, MamaMo! now, Muffin and Mini! On, Skid! on, Dragonrider! on, Wrongway and Boo! To the curvy back roads, through the end of the fall Now ride away! ride away! ride away all! As free as a bird the VENTURE can fly One day we’ll ride again with fallen brothers in the sky So out to the garage to check your tires and gear With the bike loaded down and a “Good Bye” to my beer. And then, in a twinkling, in my belly a loop I have to take off my gear cause I have to poop As I throw my leg over with power all around With a twist of the wrist I am VR rally bound Dressed up in Kevlar from his head to his foot At wide open throttle burning out the soot A bundle of junk he had flung on his back He looked like Wild Hair with that great big sack His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! Eck and his Wing, a sweet little cherry! A droll, little Midnight Rider naked with a bow, Dancing around for Cinderella giving her a “tiny” show Beer30 had a chew held tight in his gum He filled up his spit cup with mischievous Ho-Hum RandyA had a broad face and a bit of a belly That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly Stardbog always happy, a right jolly old self You can’t help but smile, in spite of yourself In the wink of an eye the mods read a thread Should I let this continue or should it be dead He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work Yammer Dan has retired, no more putting up with perps And pulling his finger as everyone knows Will make “The Pond Monster” smell but not like a rose He sprang to his Venture, to his team gave a whistle Riderduke said watch this guy he rides like a missile But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night". names changed to reflect the "usual suspects"
  21. Did my fist ride with the warming gear I purchased from Cozy Winters. The set I picked up consists of a jacket and pants liner, gloves and socks. I also bought the dual troller and the cigarette plug adapter. The bike I hooked all this stuff up to is an 86 VR. Great stuff. Rode in 49 degree weather and started to sweat. Turned it way, way down. Can't wait to see if it keeps me warm when the temp is in the lower 30s. Great investment.
  22. Several weeks ago I went out for a day long ride and the Venture clutch was acting up. When I started it and put it in gear with the clutch in the bike would try and roll. If I held the brake in it would kill the bike. I had much trouble getting into neutral as well. I took it into the shop thinking the clutch cable had gone bad. They called the next day saying the fluid was dirty and needed changing but the clutch was fine. Skip to the last 2 days. The wife gave me her blessings for me to take a 3 day ride starting yesterday and coming back on Monday. My goal was to tour WV and southern Va. On both cold mornings (Sat and Sun) the clutch was way too easy to depress when I forst started. When started it would try and take off as soon as I started it and put it in gear, even with the clutch depressed. I had to pump the clutch for a couple minutes today until it felt somewhat normal. I took off thinking all was well. I stopped 30 minutes later to look at something and noticed the bike was trying to roll with the bike in first gear and me clutching the clutch lever. I decided to turn around and come home. Within another hour the clutch was working great andnot a single problem with it. Anyone ever experience anything like this?

  24. and they are nice. Thanks for the work in getting these done. thanks Don for not putting a road block on these. Lady Massey says i have to get her a jacket to put hers on. I was wondering when she was gonna want some M/C gear! Christmas is jus' around the corner too! while our pins may look like someone else's - they are much different cause they are ours!
  25. All the conventional wisdom says DON'T use so-called 'energy conserving' synthetics in motorcycles, because they contain additives that increae lubricity (love that word!) so much that wet clutches can slip Well, I decided to ignore that bit of wisdom, and exchanged the bike's Yamalube for 3.7 US quarts of Mobil-1 Extended Service 5W-30. Here's what I've got so far... My bike, with original clutch basket, had always been a pretty loud chirper in 3rd and 4th gear, right in the seet spot of the torque curve on both ratios, and I was trying to get reconciled to dealing with it. Figured I'd try this experiment, though, before putting her to bed for the winter. After the oil change, the chirp/'cricket"/whine has been reduced dramatically, almost to the point that I can only hear it if I reaaaaaly listen for it. Shifting effort has reduced as well, very light touch on the heel/toe to notch the ratios up or down. Absolutely no transition clunk now. And for the life of me I can't discern any weirdness that might indicate the dreaded 'clutch slip' associated with using an energy-conserving oil...but here's the rub. Is ther any chance that there's some kind of undetectable-in-normal-crusing degradation taking place in the tranny? I've put about 500mi on the RSDT since the change two weeks ago, and I sure like the way she's sounding and shifting now...would hate to give that up, es[peciially no longer having to grit my teeh to consciously ignore the bloody straight-cut gear while in around-town prowling. Any thoughts/advice appreciated. I guess the bottom line here is if I can't *feel* any clutch slip, is there anything really to worry about anyway? Now that the autumn weather here in New England is starting to get a bit chancy, I may not be able to give my next experiment a try until spring, but was planning to make the next lube change to Mobil1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel lube that supposedly doens't include any of the extrea-slippery agents... just to see if my crickets/howling monkeys come back.
