  1. My '05 Tour Deluxe is having some serious front brake issues, need ideas on where to start. The bike has about 50k on it, I'll admit, the brake fluid is about a year over due on flushing. My problems are these: the front brake lever is hard to squeeze - meaning if I squeeze the lever with the normal force to moderatly slow down, I barely get any braking action, if I squeeze harder the brakes just about lock up; other issue- when I do find that sweet spot in the front brake lever for good moderate braking, the brakes pulsate pretty bad (like a warped disc) and the front end dances all over the place. Needless to say, this thing is scary to try to ride. I hope with all of these brilliant minds here, I might find an answere Thanks, Dave
  2. Im finally taking care of the steering head bearings at the local Yamaha dealer in preparation for my cross country ride. I also had them do a complete bike check and found that my front brake calipers were not releasing completely ( i asked them to find out why my gas mileage was not where i thought it shouild be). They found milky like brake fluid in the system and suggested rebuilding the system. I gave them the OK to rebuild the calipers and master cylinders. I cant afford the stainless upgrade at this time. The only thing that i didnt like was the fact that they are charging 5 hours of labor to do the head bearings (original est. was 3 hours). For $780, i should have a not only better handling bike but also a little better gas mileage (since the brake pads wont be dragging anymore). My last shop supposedly flush the syetem last year. What causes the brake fluid to turn into this milky thing that they described?
  3. I’m reworking an 83 goldwing . Had everything else fixed but could not get the front brake to tighten up. Might slow down the bike but not really stop it. Put new master cylinder on and tried three different old hoses, rebuild old calipers, looked like the rotor ran true when spinning the tire. Bleed the brakes about 20 times, replaced calipers from Ebay… ETC ,,,,,, Took to dealer, they spent three weeks and rebuilt the original master cylinder replaced brake hose with new and checked the caliper. Got a bit better but not right. Brought bike home and my son noticed that the caliper was slightly twisting when applied. Put a straight edge on the rotor and its warped like a bowl. It only out by 0.05 in but that enough to cause a real problem. Bought used rotor on Ebay and problem solved. Hopefully this may help someone else in the future.
  4. Hey, fellas. I have put about 1000 miles on the new bike so far, and I love it. I only have one complaint about the way it fits me. I am very long legged (38 inch inseam). When I am doing slow speed parking lot maneuvers, sometimes the bars go full-lock. That's when the clutch or brake lever digs into the top of my leg. I have tilted the bars all the way forward, and also tilted the brake & clutch levers as far as I can, safely, and the problem still persists. Also, after a long ride, I find my neck to be hurting more than on the old bike. I think I'm reaching farther forward on this one. I found these things all over the place online, and just wanted to check in here before laying down the cash: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200603911792?_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&item=200603911792&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&vxp=mtr#ht_1052wt_1056 Anybody have any other suggestions? I'm all ears. Yeah, I know the "sounds like you're all legs" is coming. Thats ok. I can take it. Thanks. Bert
  5. -Good morning to all, I need the measurements of all the brake hoses for a 1984 VR? There is a manufacturer That is on E-BAY today but I need to give them the information so they can build me a set in stainless steel. I also need the clutch hose length. Thanks for the help I know is coming as always. Just want to say that I am overwhelmed when I think of all the knowledge that I have access to because of all the good work running this site.
  6. I took my 08 RSV to the dealer to have a major service done . The service mgr call to tell me that one of the fork seals is leaking. I inquired about whether it's a warranty issue and he told me he didn't thinks so that the factor considers this normal wear, like brake pads. Oh yeah, I have just under 30k miles. Has any one else dealt with this will still in warranty? Thanks, Rich
  7. Just put my 2005 RSTD in the shop for major maintenance (valve adjustment, plugs, etc, etc). I have a question: the maintenance schedule says to replace brake lines every two years. WHY??? I have had bikes most of my life, and I do not recall ever seeing anything in routine maintenance about replacing brake lines/hoses. As always, any help is appreciated.
  8. i am looking for all the rubber brake lines for a 86 mkII. if you have upgraded to new braided lines if i could borrow your old ones and i can return them to you if you want. i have a vendor within walking distance of my house who does custom brake lines and i want to give him a try. he needs a sample set to make the new ones. let me know if you can help or pm me. thanks , Scott
  9. It’s that time of the year when many of us First Gen. VR owners are working on our bikes, so I thought I would take a moment and point out an issue I have discovered. After rebuilding over 100 First Gen. MKII VR (1986 to 1993) Rear Brake Calipers, I have noticed a trend that I wanted to share with you. Given that the MKII VR Rear Brake Calipers are at least 19 years old, and could be as old as 26 years, in the case of the 1986 model, Plus the rear of the MKII VR has one of the largest diameter rear rotors ever placed on a production motorcycle. The surface footage that is generated at the point of contact of the brake pads is so great, that the steel backing plates of the brake pads actually wear a groove in the Caliper Body! I have attached some pics of the groove worn in the body of the MKII VR caliper below. Now, this only happens on ONE side of the caliper body, so great care must be taken when inspecting the caliper when you change Rear Brake Pads. You will find this groove on the side of the rear caliper closest to the front of the motorcycle, and this is why many MKII VR owners miss this wear groove. If you find that your rear caliper has this wear groove, then replacement of the caliper is necessary. The reason being is the brake pads get trapped in this groove, and will not back off of the rotor after the rear brake has been released, causing the rotor to overheat and warp, or lock up. If the groove is not very deep, you still get reduced brake pad wear because the brake pads are staying in constant contact with the rotor. The first pic shows a cleaned up set of MKII VR Rear Caliper halves. The arrows are pointing to the groove cut in the Caliper Body by the Brake Pad Backing Plate. The next two pics are uncleaned caliper halves. This is most likely what the groove is going to look like when you remove the brake pads to replace them. I hope this information helps you with any pesky little rear brake problems you may be having. Earl
  10. I need a brake light switch for the front brake master cylinder. This is for a 84 Venture Royale with cruise control. Does anyone know the part number and if it still can be purchased thru Yamaha? I think I read somewhere that you needed a four wire switch when having cruise. Thanks
  11. Forwarded to me by another member. Very good stuff to know. Street Strategies, David Hough "..quickly reach for the front brake and squeeze progressively with all four fingers to allow the weight to transfer forward before applying maximum front brake. Simultaneously, you step down hard on the rear brake pedal, but in the the panic you push down too hard, and the rear end slides sideways in the curve. Your survival rection takes over, and your right foot lets up on the pedal. In a split second, the rear tire grabs the pavement again, snapping the year end back toward the center so violently that the bike flips. You're catapulted off the bike, which tumbles down the pavement behind you. Miraclously, you slide to a stop without getting run over, and your smart decision to wear your leathers even on a short trip pays off. Deciding to do a quick stop was smart, too, and your technique to brake progressively helped prevent a front-wheel slideout. Overbraking on the rear should not have prevented you from stopping effectively, even with the rear end sliding sideways. It was your survival reaction to let up on the rear brake that caused the violent high side flip." Ride Hard Ride Smart, Pat Hahn "How many people really know how to use their brakes? Many riders avoid the front brake for fear of flipping over or locking up the front wheel and losing control. This is an uninformed and dangerous mistake. Under extreme braking on a two-wheeled motorcycle, the front brake accounts for 75-90 percent of the bike's stopping ability, and does so with mind-boggling authority. As the brake lever is squeezed, weight is transferred to the front tire, increasing traction and stopping power, which allows the rider to squeeze still further. As more weight is transferred forward, more traction is transferred forward, more traction is available, allowing the rider more braking power. As the motorcycle loses speed and the front end decompresses, the weight begins to shift back toward the rear tire, allowing the rider more grip from the back. But by now the bike's stopped, and you're in first gear, ready to scoot out of the way of the car approaching rapidly from behind. You knew about that because of your mental strategy--you were aware before you made your emergency stop of who was behind you, how far back they were, and how attentive they were. That, and you could hear the screeching tires. .... Like swerving, this isn't something you read about and then execute whenever you need to. It, also needs to be learned and practiced. An additional note on swerving and braking: they absolutely must be separated from one another--they cannot happen simultaneously. You can either swerve or brake, but not both at the same time. Each maneuver uses tremendous amounts of traction, and the traction available on a motorcycle is limited. When you push your motorcycle beyond that limit, the result is usually a crash. Here your mental skills again come into play: You must decide beforehand whether you will swerve or brake, or if you need to do both, when you will swerve and when you will brake, and how you will separate them to maintain control of your motorcycle."
  12. Anybody have experience with EBC brake rotors for the Royal Star ? Pros and Cons ? pete
  13. I keep trying to get used to some things on my bike but I think I should repair the problem instead of trying to get used to. My brake lever is very hard to get the bike to stop. Pulled my calipers and made sure all pistons are working fine. The next step is to change the pads and see if anything is wrong with the master. I really have to squeeze hard to the point where I hate using the front brake. I cured the notchiness by loosen ing the pinch bolt snd lubing all hinge points. So what is left
  14. I changed my tires, and when putting the rear one back on, I forgot where one of the washers goes. On the right side, there is a washer that goes on one side of the brake mounting bracket or the other. Can someone tell me which side? This is a washer that goes on the rear axle, and it will either be up against the wheel on the right side, or between the swingarm and the brake mounting bracket. I put it up against the wheel, but is seems like there may be too much drag from the brake when I spin the wheel. Thanks for any help.
  15. Hey Wingers, just to give you heads up for GW recall. Check out this article: 126,000 Honda Goldwing motorcycles recalled for brake problems Dec 7, 2011 1:45 PM Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall alert for approximately 126,000 Goldwing motorcycles. The company has identified an issue with the motorbikes' secondary brake master cylinders that may cause the rear brakes to drag, increasing the risk of a collision. Riding a motorcycle with a stuck rear brake may also generate enough heat to cause a fire. According to Honda, the brake issue affects GL1800 Goldwing motorcycles of the 2001 through 2010 and 2012 model years. In January, the company expects to being notifying affected Goldwing owners to bring their motorcycles to Honda dealers. Mechanics there will inspect and, if necessary, replace the secondary master cylinder free of charge. For more information on the recall, which Honda has identified as S03, consumers can call Honda customer service (toll-free: 866-784-1870) or visit the NHTSA website: http://www.SaferCar.gov. 16. I am sure many of you have seen the filler panels that Harleys have between the rear fender and the saddle bags, most of the time they have tail lights, brake lights and of turn signals built in. Has anyone tried to do this on a Venture? I am looking at some leds ideas, but most of what I have found are single illumination (all leds on or off at the same time) strips or bars, nothing that you could use as both running and brake or running and turn signals. Just like to get a little more light back there to go along with my signal dymaics LED bar and my LED tail light. Thanks for any ideas.
  17. These are used to set torque per manual specs on all Ventures. $25.00 including US shipping $28.00 including Canada shipping. Every where else $31.00. Actually they have been available fairly continuously, but I got a new batch in today. The bike is under going brake surgery this winter and needs your support. These make really great tree ornaments. and can be used as stocking stuffer. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3582&title=steering-head-bearing-ring-nut-wrench&cat=33 Gary
  18. hi all I found this stuff at advanced auto vavoline synthetic brake fluid dot 3&4 ? do you think it good for the clutch on 83 venture. its good price about 6 bucks for a quart bottle. but i never seen brake fluid marked 3 and 4 . your thoughts???
  19. So all warm season riding was fine and my brake lever reach problem had subsided.here it is again.the lever is too far and also very hard to squeeze. Are there after market levers available that for closer to the grip. I checked and lubed all pivot points again and the lever is just so damn hard to squeeze Am I being a baby?
  20. What is the beat way to lower the pedal? By looking at it I would have to remove the floor board, loosen the bolt on the brake shaft, rotate it forward and re-tighten the bolt. Then adjust brake light switch. Is there anything else I should do or have over looked? tew47
  21. I need to replace my clutch and brake fluid in my 91 VR. It has 7000 origional miles and I'm pretty sure it could be the origional fluid. Any special process I should consider. Open to fluid type recommendations and why.
  22. As much as I hate it. I think its time to take the 91 to the dealor. I am at my wits end here. I love this bike so selling it is not an option and it cant be all that bad . What Im dealing with is the rear brakes. I installed new pads and a new to me rear end in it and now it keeps leaking brake fluid. Add brake fluid to it and it pumps up and I have good brakes. They pulse but stop well. After a fw hrs riding the durned warning light goes off and sure enough its low on fluid again. I cant find the leak so I guess its off to the dealor for a check. Hopefully its simple as Im not cofortable on just front brakes. DAvid
  23. I appreciated the "no rear brake, but do have left front brake" thread but couldn't find one that dealt with no front left brake. I replaced the pistons on the front right brake caliper as it was leaking and decided to check out the front left to see if they were wet and have found they don't move. I disconnected the hose from the front left caliper and no fluid came out even when I pumped the front brake lever. Any suggestions in what I should do next would be appreciated. I have a 1987 Venture.
  24. if you know some one with this year and make please tell them dont want anyone getting hurt no matter what they ride. DETROIT (AP) - Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles to fix a switch problem that can cause failure of the brake lights and possibly even the rear brakes themselves. The company said in documents filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that brake light switches can be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system. The heat can cause the brake lights to fail, and the problem also can cause fluid leaks and the loss of rear brakes, the documents said. The problem affects Touring, CVO Touring and Trike motorcycles from the 2009 through 2012 model years. They were built between June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011. Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge. The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S. alone, with the balance in other countries. Harley said it noticed the problem in June of 2010 when it got a report of a Trike model motorcycle that lost its rear brakes due to the problem. The company began investigating, and in July of 2010, it sent investigators to a dealership in Louisiana to inspect another bike that was involved in a crash. Harley has not determined yet if the problem caused the Louisiana crash, which injured one person, company spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim said Monday. She did not know how seriously the person was hurt, but said Harley is not aware of any other crashes or injuries. Harley said in the documents that there have been no more reports of the problem occurring since July of 2010. The company also said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects the recall to cost $10 million to $12 million, which will be charged as an expense in the fourth quarter. Shares of Harley-Davidson rose $1.22, or 3.2 percent, to $38.82 in afternoon trading Monday. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 25. 85 and 86 brake pads not the same??? Thought I had set on hand but got to thinking. They won't fit 86. The 83 thru 85s are the same. Changes in 86. I better be grabbing a set. I've been using the brakes on "Brown Sugar" R1 Pads are the same? I have a used set so I'm good for emergencies. Or just quit using brake so much... What do you need to get for winter??? Oh yeah garage is on that list somewhere...
