  1. Well, a year after buying my ’83 VR, I finally got to get her out and put a few mile on her. I had been on a few short rides but not enough to really tell if I had any major issues with the bike. I know that I needed to go on a long ride before I would know what needed to be addressed. I rode about 30 miles on different types of roads. As expected, a few problems showed up. The first thing I noticed was every now and then I would notice a faint smell of antifreeze, so I may have a very slight leak somewhere. It wasn’t enough though to see. After about 15 miles or so, I noticed that the temp was a little higher than I thought it should be. It never got up into the red zone of the gage, but it was near the upper portion of the green. I really don’t know what is normal on this bike. It also seems that the cooling fan is not working. The next thing I noticed was when I got out on a good 4 lanes highway. I had been riding on some slower roads and it seemed to handle pretty well but when I got out where I could let her stretch her legs a little the handling wasn’t a good. At about 70 mph it seemed began to feel unsteady. Almost like I was riding on a ridge in the road, if that makes sense. It felt like it was about to go into a wobble. I just put new Shinko tires on it. Running at 42 psi. I had the air pressure in the shocks set to the low settings on both front and rear. I weigh about 165 lbs. so I thought the low setting would be good. The last thing I noticed was after a few mile of holding it at about 65 mph, the rpm’s began to increase slightly. It didn’t seem like the rpm’s matched the speed I was running, based on what I had been seeing up to that point. Then I turned onto a secondary road and went through the gears, it just didn’t feel right. Then in 5th gear, at about 50 mph, I rolled the gas on pretty heavy and the clutch slipped. If I rolled it on easy it was ok, but when I got on it hard it would slip again. Well, that’s how the ride went. I would really appreciate some help in addressing these issues. I think I’m really going to enjoy this bike when I get all of the bugs worked out.
  2. I picked up one of these yesterday for my shed. The size is just right to keep the bike tools and "stuff" in and the price is right at $150.00.
  3. Has any one use a spray cleaner to clean Ing. switch mine is sticking some times when I put key in and try to turn on bike
  4. Luckily, both Susan & I RODE away without even a scratch. The bike... well... not so much. My pride... well... you know. VERY steep hill, very sharp hairpin turn, and I was negligent enough or arrogant enough to attempt it in 3rd gear. Right at the apex of the turn, the bike lugged, shuddered, and stalled. The roadbed was very steep to our right, so the bike pitched us off like ragdolls. we were tossed clear into some very soft loose gravel, and our full riding gear paid for itself in a nanosecond. Long story longer, the bike got skinned up pretty bad. All the plastic on the right side got deep scratches. No cracks, though. Took it to the dealership this am for an insurance estimate, and they don't actually FIX anything. they just replace it. What I really want to do is take the check from the insurance, and fix it myself, if they'll go with that. Funny thing is, I was just getting ready to spring for a new F4 tall & wide windshield. Have a good reason to toss the old one now. Nice, big greasy slab of humble pie for me. I have been riding for only 19 months, logging about 17,000 miles along the way, so I think I am fortunate to get off this easy.
  5. Iv'e looked through page after page, and can't find anybody having my problem. I can turn the key off of my 2002 RSV and put it on the kick stand and walk away, and the next thing you know the radio and my GPS that is plugged into my 12v outlet comes on. I can get back on the bike push the starter button, it won't start then I can set it back on the stand and it go's back off. All with the key in my hand. After standing it up, and it coming back on,then setting it back on the stand, and it going back off several times it stays off. Now it has set for a few days I get on the bike stand it up and it comes on. I start it, the battery is charged I turn it off and the radio and GPS is still on after the key is out. I lean the bike over on the stand it go's off.
  6. We have a trip to St. George coming up end of next week and I decided I was going to have to take the trailer with. I've had the Piggybacker for a few years and used it on occasion but always thought it looked too plain, so.....thought I'd make it fit the bike: http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Piggybacker/SANY0014.jpg
  7. Going up to Eureka Springs Thursday -Sunday (24th -27th) on a bike I just rebuilt. (it is multi-colored) I will be crossing at Greenville Ms.. What i am wondering is if there is anyone along the way that would be willing to help should i run into problems....the bike is fine right now but it hasn't been run in 4-5 years.. Anyway, that is my question. The trip is is my Churches Youth Group retreat. I will be busy with them and wont have time for "Meet-n-Greets" Sorry. but I do come into Arkansas occasionally so maybe next time.
  8. 85 Royale that I would like to lower slightly -- but from what I am seeing in the forums is a different seat the only way? I am a little on the "shorter side" and with the bike sitting straight I have the balls of my feet on the ground. Would like a little more than that but can get by -- just wondering what the options are. Thanks in advance. Scott
  9. WOW...talk about mixed feelings. I started riding when I was about 14 and I sure earned my share of battle marks during those early years. No training at all, just jumped on a bike, figured out what to push to make it go and was a terror for many years after that. Dylan is 19 now. I've bought a few small bikes for him to put around the yard on when he was younger but he never had any real interest. He had a CT70, a CT90, a Honda Bearcat and etc. but just never rode them over a half dozen times or so. Last week he told me that he has decided that he wants a bike. I think that some of his co-workers ride and he wants to join them. I feel very hypocritical about it all. I absolutely do NOT want him to get a bike but I sure understand the attraction. It has brought me much joy over the years. So, what do you do? I told him the truth about how I feel about it. That I really don't want him buying a bike but that I knew I had no basis to tell him no. I told him that I would insist though that he take the MSF safety course and that he NOT start out on a crotch rocket. I am steering him towards a 650 or so cruiser like maybe a VStar or a Honda Shadow. Due to his lack of interest in the past, I never thought I would have to face this day but here it is.
  10. i just want to say to every one i know how important leather and ridding gear is. but today i was behind two bikers who where in full leather. at a stop sign. well one of them started to kind of rock side to side on his bike. i thought he was just doing it to keep his balance. when all of a sudden the bike and him tipped right over to the right. right into the biker next to him taking both bikes down to the pavement, the one ridder managed to keep his bike on the crash bar. the other one did not look good at all. by the way i put my flashers on and got out to help. i called 911 and the ambulance attendent said it looked like a heat stroke? the guy was screaming in pain his arms and legs cramped up so bad they had a hard time getting a needle into him. we pushed his bike off to the side of the road. and called his brother to come and get it. nothing major broke on the bike. sso just saying be safe out there we all like a nice day to ride but it,s 91 out here today. and that heat can kill you.
  11. You posted in one of my threads earlier this spring that rainy days are for getting to know my bike. At first as I listened to the tapping of raindrops on the garage roof I thought that you were right on the money. BUT...now that I have put the bike together from a truckload of parts, rebuilt and flushed the front brakes, done the starter upgrade, changed the o-ring in the coolant valve, flushed the clutch fluid, changed the clutch springs, greased the swingarm, upgraded the headlight and painted the bezel, changed the right side controls, put in a new battery, greased the speedo bearing and lubed the cable, lubed the throttle cables, changed and upgraded the shift pin assembly, changed all the side cover gaskets, added an aftermarket stereo and rear speakers, and...and...DARNIT I JUST WANT TO GO RIDING, MAKE IT STOP RAINING ALREADY, I KNOW THIS THING AS WELL AS I NEED TO FOR NOW...:depressed:
  12. Two weeks ago my 09 VSR stopped running as battery was dead, and Kreggerdoodle came and saved my wife and I. The battery was original so, it was about 3 years old. So I bought a new battery from Wally World. The bike has been working fine and seemed to be running well and I have been checking with a volt meter so seemed to be charged, because the battery was @ 13 volts. My wife and I went from Katy to Lexington, TX, yesterday about 100 miles and as we got there the battery died on us again. We made it where we needed to be, after being stranded on the road for a short time. A very nice woman gave us a ride to where our friends were @ a bar b q cook off. My buddy took me to the bike where we jumped it and I brought it over to where they were at and I charged the battery for about 4 or 5 hours on a trickle charger. We started going home and made it about 60 miles and shed died on us again. Had to call AAA and had her towed home. So my question to everyone is: Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be draining the battery or why it won't hold a charge, or not charging. The bike is still under warranty but I am reluctant to take it to the dealer as I like to fix things myself if possible. I would really appeciate any input I can get. Thanks, Hal
  13. Hey everybodye! Looking forward to MD next weekend. Hope to meet many of you then. Quick question...I've got an 83, and I've noticed that I have to use the choke from a cold start almost all the time. The bike always starts...but if its a "cold" start, or what I mean to say is that the bike has not been started in a day or two, I have to use that choke. At least 3/4 of the way on to full. Quite a bit I think. But like I said the bike starts right up, so I don't have any real complaints. After the engine is run at idle for 2 or 3 minutes, it runs just fine. I'm just curious if this is pretty normal? Or should I be looking into fixing this some how? Thanks all,
  14. Took the bike to get it inspected. I had worked the horn button a few times and got it working. But at the dealer I couldn't get it to work. I leave the dealer and I can get it to work when the bike is running. I decide to take the bike home and clean the contact points in hopes to get the horn working better. I take the switch control apart and find a lot of dirt in it I clean it with Q tips sprayed with a like windex. I try working the control trying to make the contacts touch but still can't get the switch to . I finish the cleaning and put it all back together all the other controls work fine but the Horn button. I know theres no fuse in the system are there any suggestions as to what i can do next. I can"t figure out why its not working . I know that its a constant feed to the switch and the button simply closes the circuit, If the contacts are touching why wouldn't it be working?
  15. The last numbers of the VIN is the production number of the bike right?
  16. So after putting the bike back together and synching the carbs I am finding that when riding it seems as though it is starving for fuel or air? I haven't really riden the bike except for around the neighborhood. so when I try to get on it it get up to about 4000 or so and it isn't going further any suggestions as to where to start? Carbs? fuel? Any advice is appreciated. Keep the rubber on the road..
  17. Got the bike running like it should, I couldnt believe how quick it settled down to a nice idle. But now I need a rear master brake cylinder, this one is leaking and I cant get it to pump enough pressure to get any pedal to the rear brake at all. So, if anyone has one laying around for a 83 1st. gen.......shoot me a price...........I looked on fleabay, but they want way too much, and I cant wait for an auction to end. I wanna get the beast back together and ride, I forgot what it like to ride a big old bike like the Venture..........
  18. Don’t' Trust PO mods Had a very interesting start to my day today, I did my normal routine checked tires, lights, etc fired the bike up and headed off to work. I was got about half a mile away and my bike just went dark and I could smell something burning scary thing at 55 miles an hour in heavy traffic. After sitting on the side of the road for a few minuets the bike came back to life and I was able to start it and get back home. When I got home I pulled the seat to find out the fuse block the PO but in had shorted against the frame and had melted the positive wire. After I finished removing the battery leads and made sure nothing was on fire I hopped on my other bike and headed to work. Firts Aid Kit You would think that this would have been enough for one day but no about half a mile from work I came upon a motorcyclist down he was scuffed up but nothing apparently serious. I stopped helped him out, did not have to use my first aid kit but I was sure glad I had it. Seems like a car ran him off the road and took off, I just could not believe nobody had stopped before I got there.
  19. well today i went out to look over some used motorcycles to kind of get a feel for what would feel good to ride. i dont have the cash yet. but things might be good in august for a new to me bike. i stopped at a dealer and asked about some used bikes. he had a vstar 650cc nice bike low miles and a few honda shadows not sure of the size? i asked if i could take out the vstar for a ride? he checked to see if i had my endorsement and i do. he said yep you can take it for a test ride but you must have a major credit card? i was like why? he said they run it through and place a $250 amount on your card? when the bike comes back and there is no damage your card will get that $250 credited back to your card? i thought maybe it,s to cover some insurance thing? kind of like a car rental? i was not asking to rent the bike i wanted to test it. i left with out the test ride. but did get to hear it run and look at the maintenance records. what the hell how would i know if that bike had brake or transmission problems or something untill after i bought it? i never heard of this before. has any one else?
  20. Does anybody know the address to get the lower saddle bag side rails for a 2nd gen at? Puttin' together my new bike and need to order some parts :mo money:
  21. Gentl. This morning the bike had no problem cruising, after I got out of work and started to head home, the bike's rpm neddle started to go down and the bike stalled. After I came to a stop, I got it on nutral and pushed the kill swith, less than 10 seconds later I attempted to start it again and off we go with no problems. a few miles later the same thing. Like I'm loosing electrical power in my opinion. I know for a fact that the battery terminals are tight and I didn't notice anything weird with the battery meter. Any clues where to start troubleshooting? Thank you guys!
  22. I'm new here and was wondering what is the most miles any1 put on their bike or has on their bike...I mean I've seen some Gold Wings with 160K + miles on them ....and what is CONSIDERED high mileage for a venture?
  23. I have a 2003 rsv, the question is do rear signals have running lights?. My fronts are lit all the time, has been like this since I bought the bike. Do yours burn all the time?
  24. so we went for a ride saturday down to jasper indiana to check out obermyer yamaha and came away impressed. talked to the owner about a valve adjustment this fall and price seemed reasonable to me, evem mentioned a loaner bike since were 130 miles away, won't be a venture but something for the day while they work on the bike. he mentioned a fuel additive yamalube ring free additive, only 1 oz. for every 10 gals so i said why not, just wondering if anyone has tried it and what they thought. just filled tank and added a bit so we'll see. If your in jasper checkout obermyer, yamaha only so they know what there doing.
  25. Does anyone know if the 2nd Gen Venture's Handle Bar has changed since the introduction of the 2nd Gen Ventures. I have been asked by a couple of 2nd Gen owners if I could adapt the 1st Gen Accessory Mount Turn Buckle Bar for the 2nd Gen Ventures, and possibly for some of the other bikes in this group. I got to looking at the 2nd Gen Handle Bars and it seems like a very simple modification. If there has been no changes then a turn buckle probably would not even be needed. It would be helpful to know if the 2nd Gen Venture Handle Bar has changed or stayed the same. I've including a few pictures of what was made for the 1st Gen. Obviously the ends will need to be modified to accomodiate the 2nd Gen's Bars, but looking at it, looks very much do able. If you are a 2nd Gen owner and would be interested (non committal) in getting in on a group buy after the mods are complete, please indicate so on this thread. This will help me determine if making a prototype is worth the effort. Also if you are an owner of another bike an would also be interested one for your bike, please indicate the bike model and year. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
