  1. The best line I ever heard for the cap thing was "Turn your cap around, you can't possibly be as stupid as that makes you look!"
  2. Propylene glycol cools a little better and is WAY more environmentally friendly. I use EngineIce whenever I change coolant in a bike, it is Propylene Glycol and deionized water. To be more frugal Preston Low Tox mixed 50/50 with distilled water is virtually that same thing. Unless you want to argue the virtues of deionized water over distilled water.
  3. I'm Using wired headsets and have a Zumo 550 GPS (which has Bluetooth) and the adapter cable so I can use my Bluetooth phone. The only oddity is that the passenger can hear both sides of the conversation but cannot be heard by the person at the other end of the call.
  4. I have an xxl Clearview with vent, buffeting is no worse at 75 than at 55. The sound level goes up so I still usually stay down around 65 (I like to hear the stereo through the speakers) unless I am under a time constraint, or traffic flow insists I go faster.
  5. Yep, and that point isn't very far away.. I did almost the same thing 2 1/2 years ago with my Kawasaki 750 with Mary on the back, and was able to muscle it back up. The RSV weighs about 250 lbs more than the 750 and Mary did combined.
  6. Over 2 years and 12,000 miles before I dropped it in the parking lot. I was trying to back it into a space and got it leaned over a little too far. Managed to set it down soft enough that it didn't even scratch the chrome on the crash bars. Some one ran over and helped me pick it up before I even had time to think about the best places to lift from or figure out the best leverage position..
  7. I move around a fair amount, but on any ride of distance I wear good riding pants (Tourmaster Venture) and wick dry bicycle shorts under the riding pants so my skin isn't sliding against anything.
  8. To each his own,, I can't stand Corbin seats, kills my behind.. I love the pillow top stock seat, and have no problem riding 500 miles or more a day on it.
  9. I have a Tour-master Intake.. here is the current version http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=269&cat=3 with no liners zipper half-way down I am fairly comfortable up to about 85, I still wear it when it get warmer, I really haven't found any jacket that is comfortable 90 and over, but I refuse to ride without protection.. With the rain liner in, it is good from about 55 to 70, and with both liners I'm good down to about 50 before I need to add insulation under it all.. Great one jacket for everything. I also have the matching/similar Venture pants I wear on trips. http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=227&cat=4
  10. completely stock engine and exhaust,, 07 RSV, little over 12,000 mile, I get 35 to 37mpg on the freeway doing 65 to 75. If I slow down to 55mph, I get about 45mpg..
  11. He is either doing or has finished a series call By Any Means. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ny-QoSD1Y8]YouTube - MCN News: Charley Boorman launches his latest big trip[/ame]
  12. For me the Utopia back rest was the best mod.. The XXL Clearview shield would probably be my wife's favorite mod, she gets lots less buffeting now. Second for me would be the lowers vents,, when it is hot down here in the summer they make a big difference. Luggage rack is real handy, Battery tender connection almost a necessity, Zumo 550 with 4gig memory card for MP3s just plain fun. LED brake light makes me feel a little more comfortable that I'll be noticed when I stop. XM radio,, was OK but now that I have the Zumo, it will be coming off.
  13. I picked up the whole deluxe set from Amazon.com Long Way Round, Long Way Down, and Race to Dakar 8 cds right now they have it for $37. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Long-Round-Deluxe-Down-Dakar/dp/B001J2SFSC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1240452493&sr=8-2]Amazon.com: Long Way Round (Deluxe) Long Way Down (Deluxe) Race To Dakar - Complete 8 DVD Box Set: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman: Movies & TV[/ame]
  14. I think you mean molybdenum disulfide, But to each his own,, I have had a couple of clutches damaged by energy conserving oils.. And as far as clutch abuse, modern motorcycle wet clutches are designed to be treated regularly in a manner that would be considered abuse in an auto clutch. dirt bike, dual sport and super sport clutches are specifically designed to be slipped to control traction, and if you use energy conserving they will not hold up to this intended use. On mildly powered, sedately ridden cruisers it may not be as big a deal, but still energy conserving additives are not designed, nor recommended by any manufacturer, to be used in wet clutches. And as far as engine wear, there are lots of energy conserving oils that don't do as well as Mobil 1 MX4T when tested for engine life and wear. Matter of fact Mobil 1 Extended Performance energy conserving car oil got a 0.44 rating on the four ball wear test, and Mobil 1 MX4T motorcycle oil got a 0.40.. While 0.40 is the best any motorcycle oil has done, only 3 energy conserving auto oils with molybdenum disulfide have done better. Amsoil and Valvoline Syn Power at 0.35 and Castrol GTX at 0.36.. all other energy conserving oils did worse than Mobil 1 MX4T. So MX4T without molybdenum disulfide has better wear protection than 80% of all the energy conserving oils with it.
  15. I have a copy of the PDF on my computer, and yes it was funded by Amsoil, but I usually just ignore the fact Amsoil comes in first in their tests and look at the info for its own merit. Especially seeing as Mobil 1 almost always comes in a close second I use Mobil 1.
  16. The "energy conserving" oils from any manufacturer contain extra friction modifiers that can (but may not) damage wet clutches.. For many years I used Mobil 1 auto oil that was NOT "energy conserving" on my motorcycles with no problem. But since I bought the RSV I figured if I can afford a full dress touring bike, I can afford motorcycle oil.. That and RSVs have notoriously weak clutch springs so I won't chance energy conserving on the RSV. As far as the Rotella T,, it is also very good oil, and because it is designed for diesels I believe it does not have the "energy conserving" additive. It is available at most truck stops.
  17. They mount differently!!! As far as which to get, I have to mimic what others have said, for solo, RSTD,, take off the passenger seat, add a luggage rack.. I'd add a universal Givi mount and get one of their trunks... for two up, RSV!! That is why I got mine, and I still enjoy it solo and for commuting, but I was moving from a bike that was not 2 up friendly because the wife said if I got a bike with a comfortable passenger seat she would take trips with me. So far we have done two long trips and she is enjoying it..
  18. Not sure about their motorcycle oil, but their synthetic gear oil was tested against several other oils, and it did worse than Castrol, Valvoline and Pennzoil non-synthetic gear oil and no where near Amsoil and Mobil 1 synthetic gear oils. Yet there were two synthetic gear oils that tested worse than Royal Purple, Mopar and Lucas synthetic gear oils.
  19. No, my next door neighbor is, and from his recommendation we vacationed there a couple years ago. Never made it over to Nova Scotia, would have loved to gone up to the top of the Bay of Fundy, but didn't have time.
  20. Mount Desert Island is a great place to ride, bike, hike ect. At least ride up Park Loop Rd to Cadillac Summit Road and go to the top of the island. For food stop a Mainly Meat!!! great BBQ,, It is the restaurant at The Atlantic Brewing Co. http://www.atlanticbrewing.com/bbq.php
  21. That is exactly what happens, because of different detergent compounds in different oils build up and clean differently, but unless the gunk is blocking the oil from leaking out of a worn seal, which should only happen in an engine with significant miles on it, it shouldn't be a problem. For that matter, there are those that suggest changing brands regularly to keep the build up from ever happening is a good idea. I've seen the Amsoil sponsored test results for synthetic motorcycle oils, and as you would expect it shows their oil is the best, but it also shows Mobil 1 MX4T a close second, and virtually all synthetics except Royal Purple pretty good.
  22. Most sockets are twelve point and only hits the corners of the bolts, on a very tight bolt you should get a six point socket so hits on the flats of the bolt too, much less chance of rounding a bolt.
  23. They are not comparable bikes,, wheel base, seat height, suspension, instrumentation, handling and cosmetically the V-star is about the same as a Fat Boy or Soft Tail Classic. Sure the HDs are 100lbs more, have bigger engines, 65hp vs 40hp, but still the Vstar is closer to them than a Sportster. Maybe you should go to an HD dealer alone and see if you like the Fat Boy or Soft Tail Classic, if you do, you can tell him you will switch to HD, but only if he will spring to get you the one you really like.
  24. Hey, I'm off Thursday through Sunday that week. If nothing else comes up I should be there.
  25. Well, it is working now,, I installed it correctly the first time.. BUT,, I called CD and talked to someone there. They said the stabilizers work well but are picky about the correct voltage and asked if I tried testing it with the bike running. I hadn't so figured I would try that.. Bike wouldn't start, battery was too low. Now I had ridden the bike several days during Daytona bike week, which was after I installed all the rear lights, but before the fronts. I had turned the key on and off several times when installing the front LEDs, and again when installing the stabilizer, but this is ridiculous, the system should not drain a battery that fast. Fortunately I have a spare battery which was on the bench with the tender on it. I swapped batteries and once the bike had a charged battery in it, running or not, the signals slowed down. Has anyone installed a battery disconnect switch? I think that may be my next mod.
