  1. To tired and lazy. I did however grab a pair of small pliers and GENTLY turned the petcock to reserve. It went. So I plan on doing that every time I ride or clean or work on it. If it frees up and can be turned by hand, cool. If not, when I need it I will grab a pair of pliers from the Genuine Official Yamaha tool kit that came with the bike.
  2. I can't even imagine his pain. My heart felt prayers have been said.
  3. I just ran out to Central Ohio for chicken wings at the Quaker State and Lube in Austintown. (first trip ever to a QS+L) Came back the next day (yesterday) and thought I would check the mileage. 37.6 MPG running about 73 on cruise. With the occasional 4 wheel induced blast to 85. Sassinfrassin cages anyway. I have tried to turn my valve to reserve and just can't seem to get it to turn. It may have never been turned. When I hit 1 bar I would have to add 3.25 to 3.75 gallons. Never did see a red light. But without the reserve "warning" I did not push it to far. Gonna take a gas can with me next time. Can I bypass the reserve switch? I thought I may just unhook the lines and insert a filter to make the reconnection.
  4. :sign yeah that:I'm only gonna live once. And the chances of my saying, "Oh Sh,,snap!" at the end are pretty good.
  5. Especially after riding my GS today I am underwhelmed by my VR brakes. this winter I want to delink front and rear, change to SS lines and upgrade the pads. Unless of course I can find R1 calipers on the cheap, then they will be added. But for the time being I am going to change oil when needed, check it over from time to time, keep it clean, and ride the shnot out of it. I am already stock piling stuff like HID head light, a bunch of LED lighti9ng, and trying to figure out what I am going to do about the stereo. This winter while the riding sux. Going to g ride it to dinner at a Quaker Steak and Lube somewhere in Ohio next week. Can't wait for that.
  6. Wow, that makes even New York state look good. And Lord knows, that is hard to do. Wanna move to Tennessee. But the eastern mountains more or less. Cooler, some winter (sort of), and GREAT white water kayaking.
  7. I thought my 86 was quick. Hadn[t ridden my 1980 GS 1100 E in a month. Rode it to the store today. 5 miles, curvy road by the river. The VR rides nicer. Cornering ability is similar. (limited probably to the rider's skills) There is NO comparing what happens when the throttle is twisted. Although top ends may be similar. There is no comparing the time to get there. My B6 VR is no slug. But if I want to smoke the rear and lift the front, I'll take the Zuki for sure.
  8. New York $50 for first time title fee. $17 or $17.50 for annual registration. HOWEVER, we are taxed and Fee'd to DEATH. Car is about $35 a year for each of ours. Age doesn't matter, goes by weight actually
  9. Must be something in the air. Just had to replace my pressure tank. It was seeping out the back and is in a spot that made it tough to notice. Till there was enough water on the floor to make it's presence known. New pressure tank, pump switch, shut offs, etc. Now I don't hear the pump switch click on so often. And I second the opinion on Pex. Borrowed a crimp tool and the Pex made short easy work out of the piping.
  10. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Our lives are a LONG succession of heart beats. And being human we can forget things. Even one moment in time can cost us dearly. Just one of the things that makes our lives so precious. Best of luck for a speedy recovery and remind your brother to give himself a break. (I tend to be my own worst critic WHEN I screw up. Not IF)
  11. I like that. I'm a redneck on an old Yamaha. A town or 2 over from me there's this little bar/hotel/diner that has but 1 handicapped parking spot. Guess where the local baddass Harley contingent park?
  12. Sort of did that. I traced the aerial cable to the amp and unhooked it there, then plugged the new aerial into the jack coming off the amp. No luck. Still have only slight AM reception and nothing on FM. So far the only good news is that it does play cassettes. So at least I will have tunes for the weekend. Assuming I still hve cassettes laying around. Can I even still buy blank cassettes? Won't be riding to much this weekend anyway. A local river has a dam release so I will spend most of Saturday and Sunday bouncing off rocks in a little plastic boat. Hopefully mostly right side up.
  13. Back from the road last night and back on my radio problem this rnorning. I bought a cheap car aerial and pulled the CB/ CLASS controller to get to the aerial jack. WHOOPEE! I have tunes! Right up until I moved the wires a bit. Back to junk and static. I now have to figure it is in the signal "seperator" for the CB / FM. Can't plug the aerial into the radio cuz it uses the different plug going to the amp. Anyone have a signal splitter or a CB unit up for grabs?
  14. Second Gen? I thought you said NICE bike? Oh, my bad. They're all right. If you can't be riding a first gen.
  15. On a semi related note. A guy here in town has 2 sets of brand new take off RK mufflers he wants $100 for. (pretty sure $75 will take a set) If he will take $75 there will only be one set left. Are there adapters for my Ist Gen?
  16. And the "tester" used at some parts stores (my local NAPA for one) seem to leave a lot to be desired. I gave up on them ( a few years ago) after a second battery from them "tested fine" but was junk in my GS. Bought a ew battery from another parts store in town and had no problem after. 3 years on that one now. Did I mention in my other battery post that my local Advantage Auto hooked me up with a perfect size and configuration battery for my 86 Venture for $70? (Exide) Rob did offer to get me the "OEM" part number for $130. I passed on that one.
  17. Steve, thanks but that's not it. I did however turn up the volume the other day, get little or nothing, remembered the post and hit the button. Was eye opening. I can hear cassette audio, and a bit of AM, but get no reception on FM. I was thinking of the "MarshallMod" which is basically upgrading to a Firestick antenna. Just hate to spend money if I don't have to. from the original post "it acts like the antenna isn’t there,, , but I get nothing on FM and only static on AM" is what I am getting.
  18. This post is a bit spooky after yesterdays ride. 2/3 of the way through a 200 mile ride I get nothing on FM and barely anything on AM. Did nothing but ride, no working on anything. I may have hit a wrong button when trying to manually tune, but can't get anything to come back. I was wondering if antennas can just go bad? Or an antenna connection. And now i get ready to start my work road trip so I can't even work on it till Thursday. I do get music if I plug my Ipod in using a cassette adapter. And the bike is a first gen 86.
  19. *tip op my hat* to motorcyclemike. Robert Mitchum is one of (many) actors from that time period that I really enjoy watching. Toss in moonshine, mountain roads, and a good old fashioned battle with gangsters and "revenuers" and it has to be a winner. Just added it to my Netflix queue. djh3, if you can make your way over to Saluda NC there is this little shop selling knick knacks and such. One of the owners is a geoloigist of sorts. (has a degree in geology anyway) and they have some of the coolest rocks and such on hand. There are some pieces of amethyst that are simply amazing. I don't normally go for "dust catchers" but there was one piece of raw amethyst that was something to see. I just couldn't afford it or I would have owned it. The shop is just around the corner from the and is right next door to an ice cream shop.
  20. All set and rode it tonight. Removed the bad switches, installed 2 new fuse holders, and bought a new battery. And did I get a deal on a battery. An exide that is a perfect fit and has the opening for the probe for $67 plus tax. Thanks to my bud Rob at Advantage (NOT Advance) auto parts in town. Trickle charged it till full and am riding again. Oh, and I have a lead on a new job that will take me off Over The Road driving. No more being gone 3 and 4 days at a time. Would have had this fixed Monday night if I had a "normal" job.
  21. People on this board absolutely ROCK.
  22. I'll put in a new muffler bearing and feed more nitrous to the turbo and take my chances. Mine is too quiet. Wish I had been the first to spot the post.
  23. I'm in. I want one. If I don't get over my infatuation with this bike it is going to weigh a half ton. With enough lights (over this winter) to be seen from space.
  24. We use plastic welders on whitewater kayaks, but the plastics are totally different. I would be interested in hearing and seeing what the end result is. Seeing as my bags have hairline cracking around the latches. I was thinking of using 2 part epoxy or fiberglass resin and cloth this winter. Then painting and (or) covering the repair with lighting panels. (if they turned out ugly)
  25. I guess it depends on what collision would cost in your area. (it is different in different locales, right?) I'm not sure what the collision itself is costing me. I have $3000 on my 86 (24,000 miles and cherry) along with liability on it and my 1980 GS 1100 E. $119 a year all in. At that price I didn't bother to check the breakdown of the coverage. I'll keep it for this year but may just go liability when time to renew.
