Removing rear wheel?
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can't get a wrench on the backside of the clamp but was able to get a 12mm 1/4 inch drive socket on the bolt head. Unfortunately, while it will move a little, it won't undo. Rather than taking a chance of breaking the bolt just before the long weekend I have decided to just replace the brake pads today and leave pulling the wheel for a later date. I'll keep soaking it with WD40. I got the caliper off and the pads out but am having trouble pressing the pistons back in. Scraped gently and cleaned around the pistons as much as I could. Is there some trick to making room for the new pads? -
Removing rear wheel?
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Best I can tell the bolt is a 12mm just tried the other sizes because the 12 wouldn't go on. Did try feeling on the other side for a nut but wasn't sure what there was up there. Thanks I'll have a look at the backside. -
I need to replace the rear brake pads so thought I may as well pull the wheel and grease the bearings and splines as well. Can't get a socket on the muffler clamp. Tried an 11mm, 12mm and 13mm but none will go on properly. Does it need a thin socket? I have a regular Craftsman set.

I purchased some chaps and boots from them the day before yesterday paid by Visa with no problem. Did try a few days before the end of the month when the sale was on but it kept going to the login page. If I logged in again the cart was empty. Looks like they were having problems with their site. Cost $20 more than it should have... Oh well.

looking for easy headlight upgrade
camos replied to mike042's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About 6 months ago I ordered 2 ballasts from HID Country. The ballasts never came and they did not answer any of my emails. Sicced VISA on them to get my payment back. Won't be dealing with HID Country again. -
So did you manage to Wing it this weekend? It was two days of glorious weather here. So much nicer when riding on completely dry roads. Here in the Camelot of B.C., weather bad enough to prevent two wheeled traffic is against the law. That said, we did have a week this Winter when it was too chancy for me to be out on a bike.

Perhaps you should take that thought seriously Rick. Was reading tonight that the next 3 months from Manitoba to the Maritimes is expected to be somewhat warmer than usual while for VI and the Mainland it will be cooler than usual. Similar to the way the Winter progressed. No word on what that means for the Summer season though since a warmer Summer might be a bit too, too much for comfort.

My Venture pretty much lives in the rain for several months at a time so the clutch lever starts squeaking on a regular basis, every two to three of weeks or so. A little engine oil seems to fix it for a while. I think the lever pivot bushing on mine is somewhat worn and should be replaced since it will drop out of cruise control when we hit a bump. Also some times it is necessary to hold the lever out to get the cruise engaged.

I would like one please.

Anti-dive question
camos replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I disconnected the anti-dives at the connector in the fairing behind the headlight a couple of months ago and have not noticed any difference in handling. That could mean one of the previous owners had installed progressive springs but the person I purchased the bike from made no mention of such a feature. The reason I decided to disconnect them was to reduce the drain on the battery in stop and go traffic. Now when stopped with the brakes engaged the charging system sits at over 13v instead of 12v or less. Seems to be a good thing to do. Some day I may remove the anti-dive contraption on the forks. -
Very good idea, count me in too.

Couple questions
camos replied to Rosie1965's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That would be the symbol for brake fluid. There are two reservoirs, one on the right handlebar for the front brake and one located on the right side middle for the rear brake. -
I think credit cards are probably the safest form of currency exchange to use. At least the Canadian ones are because they are all insured, can't speak to the US bank cards. Always inform your CC issuer regarding your trip departure and return. Someone wants your card, give it to them. Call your CC company and cancel it. Keep an eye on the monthly invoice for false charges. Real money has no safeguards like electronic money. Regarding cash, use pesos and get them at your bank in Canada usually for a better rate than is available in Mexico. Not much point in buying USD then changing them into pesos for a double exchange payment. Also, when buying pesos in Mexico you could be at risk of either observation or tip off to robbers about your newly acquired wad of cash.

I'm thinking a better solution is to install two HID lights which will add up to the same voltage as the original light. Shouldn't have a problem with the warning light then. Likely should disable the RLU though. That's what I am going to do when I get over my issues with HID Country.

Ask and ye shall receive.

Yes it is Kerry. I'm very happy with it.

It was but . IF you came to Victoria and IF you managed to park in a time zone I was patrolling then having the decal just might make a difference. We are paid a wage with no commissions on production. You are spot on about winning the lotto to take a ferry ride.

One of my favourite excuses for parking in a small vehicle spot is "It's just a small SUV." All, good points but only part of it. I patrol 1 and 2 hour time zones, not pay spaces or meters which are more like a commodity such as a hotel room or apartment rental. The time zones essentially operate on the honour system. People get 1 or 2 hours for free then are expected to move to give others a chance at parking there, yet most seem to think it's unfair when they get a ticket for staying too long. Where else can you get something for free unless you get greedy and have to pay 10 or 20 times the original amount? It is just an example of the "victimization" attitude that is so prevalent these days.:fiddle:Oh well... Anyway, riding a scooter 7 hours a day in traffic is a real hoot. Do you have your VentureRiders.org decal on your vehicle? No? Might be worthwhile. I have never ticketed a Venture but have written up lots of other motorcycles.

Yuppers, that would be me. I seem to be writing a ticket, not marking tires. In any case you would be amazed at how many idiots are licensed to drive.

88 Venture HiD light kit (attempt)
camos replied to Trevor Heath's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recommend you stay away from HID Country. On time they sent the wrong parts which had to be returned for replacement at my cost. Then later they did not ship two digital ballasts and would not respond to my email queries. I had to sic Visa on them to get a refund. -

You forgot the smiley. -
I ordered two digital ballasts from HID Country last August. By September they still hadn't arrived so I sent them an email. Got no response. Waited two more weeks then sent another email but still no response. About the middle of October contacted Visa to get my money back. No idea what went wrong but I won't be dealing with HID Country again.

I know of a guy who rode 500 miles or more through the eastern middle of the US during the winter snows. Can't remember what states exactly. He made it without incident, saw the pix to prove it. On the other hand last year I left for work one morning in December on the Virago, the roads were dry but after about 15 km there was a dramatic change to real winter with 2-3 inches of snow and icy snow covered roads. I should have pulled over and caught the bus but I didn't. Continued on slowly for about a km, seemed OK with no slipping or sliding but hit some rough ice and without any indication of a problem the bike went down. Was moving about 15 kph at the time and somehow did no damage to the bike or to me. I managed to leap off the bike somehow and get to the side of the road, can't remember exactly how that happened. and get to the side of the road The vehicle behind me was fortunately moving slow enough that they were able to almost come to a stop before they hit my bike which just scooted ahead a foot or so. Hitched the rest of the way to work and did the same at the end of the day to pick up my bike. The roads were dry by then. The bike was covered in a thick layer of really ugly icy snowy crud. Scraped it off and drove it home. I was lucky on two counts with neither me or my bike getting damaged by this incident. This happened so fast there was no chance to stabilize us by putting my feet out. It's too unpredictable so there is no way I will ever chance riding in snowy conditions again. The Venture weighs about twice as much as the Virago so the crash would likely have been much worse. -
Increase CB amp rating in fairing aux power recepticle?
camos replied to fredfloon's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
My battery charger charger came with a two prong bullet style connector that plugs into a pair of alligator clips. I wired a fused connector to the battery to make it easier to attach the charger. When I bought an air compressor it came with a power point socket which I cut off and put the bullet type plug on. It's inexpensive and works great. -
Me too, the one I am most interested in is the handlebar risers.
