  1. Trust me they do fail...... I was packing our 88 for a two up New Years Trip to Mexico. With the bike sitting on the center stand, I turned the damping dial from two to four. Went in the house, came back out the next morning to find a 6" dia pool of gold coloured oil in front of the rear wheel..... Skydoc has sent me a replacement shock from a 91. It is today's project. TH
  2. Are you sure this part is still available from http://www.rivcoproducts.com? TH
  3. Went out to my newly acquired 88 yesterday and clicked the damper up from 2 to 4 ready for a two up ride this weekend and oil just poured out of the shock...... 1-800 -progressive for me to buy a new rear to go with the recently purchased front springs. TH
  4. Surely properly tuned you should be able to get 40-45 mpg at 70 mph But yes, "the power needed to push an object through a fluid increases as the cube of the velocity. A car cruising on a highway at 50 mph (80 km/h) may require only 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) to overcome air drag, but that same car at 100 mph (160 km/h) requires 80 hp (60 kW). With a doubling of speed the drag (force) quadruples per the formula. Exerting four times the force over a fixed distance produces four times as much work. At twice the speed the work (resulting in displacement over a fixed distance) is done twice as fast. Since power is the rate of doing work, four times the work done in half the time requires eight times the power."
  5. I'm inclined to agree about HiD country. That where mine came from and I would not buy from them again. Additionally fitting of an HiD bulb is a bit of a compromise. If I set the low beam to the optimum position then turn on the high beam, there is a dark patch on the road in front of the bike. I've tried with and without the graves shield on the filament. Not much difference. It is to do with the design of the headlight reflector and it's shape. Don't get me wrong, it is way better than a 55W Halogen but it's not perfect. TH
  6. GPS mount. Very clever Randy.... A good location for the 12V outlet too. Mine still his the original Radio / tape deck / CB It can all go as far as I'm concerned. Is the CD player waterproof? If not how do you deal with that issue? Thanks, Trevor
  7. We have a 2007 with 35K miles on it. Half that mileage was a Seattle - Panama - Seattle trip Mine is geared tall at 17-43 and will get 60 mpg at 60 mph and got 17,000 miles out of the Avon Distanza tires Agree with all the "RR" states except I would put a bit more emphasis on the 2008 oil consumption issue. Why? Because I rebuilt one for a Dutch Guy in Guatamala that was down to 400 miles per qt. You''ll get no support from Kawasaki to fix it. Same with the balancer chain tensioner issue. In fact Kawasaki deny there is an issue to this day....there surely is, mine broke and I had to fish it out of the crankcase in 5 pieces with a magnet. Overall a great bike, many have been ridden round the world. We intend ride ours to Ushuaia in the next couple of years too. Any questions please ask TH
  8. Thanks for the web site comments. I used to be quite active on it less so at the moment. Yes I'll have to keep a look out for the covers and a rack. General statement: Not too happy with the HiD light. I've tried it with and without the Graves Shield over the filament. Still has dark spots on the road ahead particularly on high beam. Reading and researching. These things are to be expected when one changes to a different type of filament in a parabolic designed for something else (a Halogen bulb). I guess a pair of driving lights are in my near future.... Need to get the windshield cut down too. That will help night sight by cutting down glare. Of course need to fit a set of progressive front springs before I do that or I'll get to do it twice! Thanks TH
  9. Thanks again to all for the input. The images presented throw up a couple more questions Who sell those aluminum covers for the rear brake cylinder? Who sells the rear carriers seen on the top boxes of some of the bikes? Thanks Trevor PS I've removed the graves shield from my HiD headlight bulb and will let you know the difference (or the number of miles I do before getting a ticket for excessive glare
  10. A few more questions 1. Those with HiD headlight bulbs. Are you using a bulb with a Graves Shield? The one I've fitted has the shield those in my car do not and appear superior with regards light projection on to the road. 2. Is anyone using the spin on oil filter adapter offered by Buckeye? 3. I've been looking at the images on this site of Ventures with the side covers cut away to show more of the engine. Is this preferable in hot climates? If so what is the best way to cut them (Can they be cut and look good without re-painting? Thank you Trevor
  11. Hi all, I've been wondering about the chrome plated "shield" that is fitted the HiD bulb I've fitted in my Venture. The (aftermarket also) bulbs fitted in my car do not have these. Is anyone running a bulb without this shield? Did you try with and with out? What light "footprint" could I expect without? Why do I ask....simply while the HiD is clearly superior to the H4 I was expecting better. Thanks TH
  12. I too hope she is OK. After being impressed with the LED flashing brake lights I fitted to the Venture, I've just ordered some more for the center brake light in my car.... TH
  13. I'd like to get this done ASAP. Without worrying at the moment about the warning lights Where is it? Thanks TH "For the Reserve Lighting Unit, I simply unplugged it, and using some #12AWG solid wire I made 3 Jumpers to stick in the end of the wire harness connector. Jumper 1 was from Blue/White to Blue/Black. This sends the power to the handlebar dimmer switch. Jumper 2 was from Black to Blue/Green. This provides a ground path for the High beam indicator. Jumper 3 was from Yellow/Green to Blue/Red. This turns on the High beam indicator. The remaining Yellow and Green/Red have no connections."
  14. Hi, My 88 has a fork brace. Is your 's an improvement over stock or did the bike not come with one? Thanks TH
  15. Hi all, Well I found the issue causing no illumination of the HiD bulb. One of the female spade connectors that the relay plugs into was faulty, pushed back in the socket. With this repaired the kit now works OK. So...I plugged it all in buttoned it up and went for a ride. Clearly superior. Now I need to go back to the older thread listed above and look at the solutions to the headlight warning lights remaining on. Thanks, TH
