  1. Trust me they do fail...... I was packing our 88 for a two up New Years Trip to Mexico. With the bike sitting on the center stand, I turned the damping dial from two to four. Went in the house, came back out the next morning to find a 6" dia pool of gold coloured oil in front of the rear wheel..... Skydoc has sent me a replacement shock from a 91. It is today's project. TH
  2. Are you sure this part is still available from http://www.rivcoproducts.com? TH
  3. Went out to my newly acquired 88 yesterday and clicked the damper up from 2 to 4 ready for a two up ride this weekend and oil just poured out of the shock...... 1-800 -progressive for me to buy a new rear to go with the recently purchased front springs. TH
  4. Surely properly tuned you should be able to get 40-45 mpg at 70 mph But yes, "the power needed to push an object through a fluid increases as the cube of the velocity. A car cruising on a highway at 50 mph (80 km/h) may require only 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) to overcome air drag, but that same car at 100 mph (160 km/h) requires 80 hp (60 kW). With a doubling of speed the drag (force) quadruples per the formula. Exerting four times the force over a fixed distance produces four times as much work. At twice the speed the work (resulting in displacement over a fixed distance) is done twice as fast. Since power is the rate of doing work, four times the work done in half the time requires eight times the power."
  5. I'm inclined to agree about HiD country. That where mine came from and I would not buy from them again. Additionally fitting of an HiD bulb is a bit of a compromise. If I set the low beam to the optimum position then turn on the high beam, there is a dark patch on the road in front of the bike. I've tried with and without the graves shield on the filament. Not much difference. It is to do with the design of the headlight reflector and it's shape. Don't get me wrong, it is way better than a 55W Halogen but it's not perfect. TH
  6. GPS mount. Very clever Randy.... A good location for the 12V outlet too. Mine still his the original Radio / tape deck / CB It can all go as far as I'm concerned. Is the CD player waterproof? If not how do you deal with that issue? Thanks, Trevor
  7. We have a 2007 with 35K miles on it. Half that mileage was a Seattle - Panama - Seattle trip Mine is geared tall at 17-43 and will get 60 mpg at 60 mph and got 17,000 miles out of the Avon Distanza tires Agree with all the "RR" states except I would put a bit more emphasis on the 2008 oil consumption issue. Why? Because I rebuilt one for a Dutch Guy in Guatamala that was down to 400 miles per qt. You''ll get no support from Kawasaki to fix it. Same with the balancer chain tensioner issue. In fact Kawasaki deny there is an issue to this day....there surely is, mine broke and I had to fish it out of the crankcase in 5 pieces with a magnet. Overall a great bike, many have been ridden round the world. We intend ride ours to Ushuaia in the next couple of years too. Any questions please ask TH
  8. Thanks for the web site comments. I used to be quite active on it less so at the moment. Yes I'll have to keep a look out for the covers and a rack. General statement: Not too happy with the HiD light. I've tried it with and without the Graves Shield over the filament. Still has dark spots on the road ahead particularly on high beam. Reading and researching. These things are to be expected when one changes to a different type of filament in a parabolic designed for something else (a Halogen bulb). I guess a pair of driving lights are in my near future.... Need to get the windshield cut down too. That will help night sight by cutting down glare. Of course need to fit a set of progressive front springs before I do that or I'll get to do it twice! Thanks TH
  9. Thanks again to all for the input. The images presented throw up a couple more questions Who sell those aluminum covers for the rear brake cylinder? Who sells the rear carriers seen on the top boxes of some of the bikes? Thanks Trevor PS I've removed the graves shield from my HiD headlight bulb and will let you know the difference (or the number of miles I do before getting a ticket for excessive glare
  10. A few more questions 1. Those with HiD headlight bulbs. Are you using a bulb with a Graves Shield? The one I've fitted has the shield those in my car do not and appear superior with regards light projection on to the road. 2. Is anyone using the spin on oil filter adapter offered by Buckeye? 3. I've been looking at the images on this site of Ventures with the side covers cut away to show more of the engine. Is this preferable in hot climates? If so what is the best way to cut them (Can they be cut and look good without re-painting? Thank you Trevor
  11. Hi all, I've been wondering about the chrome plated "shield" that is fitted the HiD bulb I've fitted in my Venture. The (aftermarket also) bulbs fitted in my car do not have these. Is anyone running a bulb without this shield? Did you try with and with out? What light "footprint" could I expect without? Why do I ask....simply while the HiD is clearly superior to the H4 I was expecting better. Thanks TH
  12. I too hope she is OK. After being impressed with the LED flashing brake lights I fitted to the Venture, I've just ordered some more for the center brake light in my car.... TH
  13. I'd like to get this done ASAP. Without worrying at the moment about the warning lights Where is it? Thanks TH "For the Reserve Lighting Unit, I simply unplugged it, and using some #12AWG solid wire I made 3 Jumpers to stick in the end of the wire harness connector. Jumper 1 was from Blue/White to Blue/Black. This sends the power to the handlebar dimmer switch. Jumper 2 was from Black to Blue/Green. This provides a ground path for the High beam indicator. Jumper 3 was from Yellow/Green to Blue/Red. This turns on the High beam indicator. The remaining Yellow and Green/Red have no connections."
  14. Hi, My 88 has a fork brace. Is your 's an improvement over stock or did the bike not come with one? Thanks TH
  15. Hi all, Well I found the issue causing no illumination of the HiD bulb. One of the female spade connectors that the relay plugs into was faulty, pushed back in the socket. With this repaired the kit now works OK. So...I plugged it all in buttoned it up and went for a ride. Clearly superior. Now I need to go back to the older thread listed above and look at the solutions to the headlight warning lights remaining on. Thanks, TH
  16. Jeff, Thanks for the link. While I was pretty sure there were no more trails to blaze with this bike. I did search for quite a while before posting the questions. My immediate issue is more basic....no illumination with or without the engine. I have to assume a faulty component at this point. TH
  17. Yes indeed....I purchased the whole kit from "HiD country" Bulb - ballast - relay etc. I did hear back from them about the issue. They advised trying to switch the polarity. However this did not work either. I am getting the signal to the (motorized) bulb to switch from high to low beam but no illumination. TH
  18. Hi I'm sure some owners have already fitted a HiD light bulb kit to their bikes. I made the attempt today. I wired the red and black ring terminals directly to their respective battery terminals. When I turned the key on....nothing happened. No light on High or Low I checked the kit fuse and refitted the Halogen bulb it is fine. Any suggestions? Thanks TH
  19. Ha.....you can tell how many WWW I've purchased in my life. AM41/42 combination it is then Thanks TH
  20. Coal burning? Sure do...at least I do when I get the chance http://www.trevorheath.com/livesteaming/uploads/Europe07/Trevor_WHR_K1.jpg
  21. Now this is interesting because we LOVE Fish & Chips and then we thought "we haven't seen a Motel 6 in CG so I looked it up. Do you mean the one in Eloy about 8 miles to the SE? Motel 6 Casa Grande #1263 4965 S Sunland Gin Road I-10 at Sunland Gin Road Exit #200 Eloy, AZ, 85131 Thanks TH
  22. Mike, Looked up the Venom. There appears to be two levels of specification for the 140/90-16 I assume you are discussing the "WWW" for the higher load rating. Is that correct? Thanks TH
  23. Hi all, Yes indeed all I have questions on right now is lighting (and the manual We purchased the bike locally last weekend off Craigslist for 2500 USD just three weeks after moving from Seattle to Casa Grande, AZ. We looked at about 6 1200 Goldwings and one Voyager. None of which came close in terms of condition and service history. The bike is a 1988, first registered in 11/89. It is two tone silver, garage kept it's entire life with 70,400 miles on it. While the price was a little high based on KBB. The seller was however, able to show me dealer receipts for servicing for the past 4 years including 1200 USD in the past 12 months for a monster service plus a new water pump, battery, clutch and starter motor. The only thing the dealer receipts indicated the bike needs is a set of fork springs which I'm sure progressive can supply. I've ordered a HiD headlight kit and will also order a flashing brake light kit. Without starting a huge debate (please) I would like to know if owners are using Mobil 1 oil (bike predictably has Yamalube in it at the moment) and what brand of tires are known for giving a long service life in the high temp basically straight road environment of the South West (Bike has Dunlop K491 at this time). I'm a life long motorcyclist. Most recent bike (which we still have) is a KLR650 which we rode to Panama and back two years ago. Past bikes include two BMW RT's a Royal Enfield. BSA's and 30 years ago a 1100 Gold Wing that I stuffed into a Deer near Rock Springs, Wyoming at 60 mph and walked away (The Deer exploded). Images of past bikes here http://www.trevorheath.com/livesteaming/motorcycles.htm Slide show of the Panama trip here http://www.trevorheath.com/ After the Deer incident I did not own a street bike for several years. We went road racing instead including one race meeting on the high banks of Daytona in October 1982. I was a better manager and tuner than rider though and we had much success 1983 -1986 Again thanks to all for your input. Kind Regards Trevor
  24. Thanks for the very informative reply. Do you have the superbright part number?. That way I can leave all well alone until the replacement bulbs arrive. Is the 1st Gen Mk 2 service manual one of those available for download here? Kind regards, TH
  25. Thanks for the prompt replies. Which of these documents is best suited for a 1988? 1st Generation Ventures 83-85 Service Manual First Gen Manual 2nd Generation Manuals RSV Owners Manual RSV Service Manual RSV Parts List Yes I do mean the red and amber lights on the outside rear of the trunk. Mine clearly are "live" but with two of the four bulbs in the red area burnt out. The amber sections on the corner being turn signals, these are currently fine. I removed the three screws inside the trunk but this did not release the lights on the outside. Thanks TH
