I always camp, on very rare occassions will I get a motel room. For many years I could accrue comp time at work instead of overtime pay. I would take at least one 6 week and a 3 week trip solo and then another 2 or 3 weeker with the wife. (She only had so much vacation). I have towed a trailer on many of these trips but perfer not to. I learned to carry one extra change of clothes, more underware, leather jacket with liner, rain suit(it will shed the cold also). A sleeping bag -10, a 2in self inflating mat, and the tent I use is the 6 person A frame Timberline. I eat a mid moring breakfast and then a nice dinner, with snacks throughout the day and drink plenty of water. I ride from 7ish am to 4ish pm. On occassion will ride late if I want and the weather is right. To identify a place to stop I look for a KOA (but usually nothing close, as I perfer to ride back roads and they are usually close to Interstates) so I have a Woodall's Directory and can always find something in the area (like to shower daily if possible). In the evening after dinner, I look for local event to attend, fairs, interesting sights, high school or college, baseball, basketball, football, what ever to relax. Will even go to a movie in the area. Alot of time is spent at camp writing in my daily trip log about the interesting day and people. If weather gets real bad, I've been known to stay under the roof of carwashes, a bank drive thru and have even spent nights in the back of a U-Haul (with the dealer's permission). But, must admit as I get older, motels looks better all the time, but the campgrounds, national and State Parks seem to be cleaner and smell better than the small town motels. Forgot to mention have used my MC cover on several occassions, just slide my matress and sleeping bag in and lights out till morning, keeps you warm and dry. It's all about the EXPERIENCE

Great profession. I would suggest you contact an AHP recruiter and look at the AHP web site to find out AHP's requirements, since every department is different. It would set you in the right direction and answer any questions as to what courses you should take. Many years ago I worked with several AHP officers in their intelligence and special investigations unit, at the time most had prior military experience or college degrees. Their academy is one of the finist in the Nation. Don't get discourged at any point during your search, many of the steps you will be required to do will be tests to really see how bad you want to become an officer. Good Luck, you will love it.

SO! What are the AGES of the DRIVERS of VR.Org?
Shamue replied to Zfrebird4's topic in Watering Hole
57 and in 3 years I'll start counting backwards, too. She is 53 and started riding on the back at 19, so a companion forever. Been riding since 17, first on the dirt and then at 21 took to the highway. Best switch ever made, the dirt was going to kill me. Have met the best people in the world touring and on the dirt is was always who-out-did-who. Riding has kept us all feeling like we are in the toy box and we don't ever want to put the TOY (s) away. It's not raining, temp in the 40's we're riding. Have plenty of aches and pains, but they all seem to disappear when the engine turns over. Hope everyone has many more years and happiness riding and the youngsters grow into it. -
Look for the ground, make sure it is very good. Everytime I've had an issue with the radio-cd, it has been because of the ground, expecially up in the fairing where all the plugs are. Worked them over good and used dilectric grease and haven't had any issues for the past 6 months. fingers crossed. Shamue

On the trip I just completed in September, In the 25 days have short showers for 6 days lasting approximately 1hr each, then 4 full days of solid rain. The longest day only traveled 440 miles from Maryville NC to Topsail Beach NC through the Blue Ridge Mtns. The worst rain I've been in was in 1981, left Key West FL and road north to Washington DC for a rally, rained all the way, riding back roads along the east coast for 3 days. On that same trip left DC and road to Bolixi MS and had beautiful weather through Sky LIne Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway and road every mile. Arriving in Bolixi I had 2 days of beautiful weather to spend time with family. This was in early September and the morning I left Bolixi a storm had moved in (huricane season). It was raining hard and the roads had an inch or so of water. I traveled west along the coast hoping to out ride it, but no luck. I was in a hard down pour as the storm had blanketed the country from Florida to Arziona and the Gulf Coast and as far north as Oklomaha. I knew i wasn't going to out run the storm or ride out of it on my way back to Albuquerque, so I rode straight through from Bolixi MS to Albuquerque NM 1700 miles in 32 hours. It rained hard and steady the whole time, as I pulled up the my house and unloaded the bike approximately 7pm that night, the rain turned to a very light drizzle and then quit. After that rain we did not have any moister until Thanksgiving weeked when it snowed 6 inches. I was was 29 at the time and had been riding since I was 17 so I thought I was bullet proof. That ride in the rain changed me for ever, I now will ride in the rain during the day and early evening, but no more at night. I usually camp on my extended trips and have found self serv car washes, bank drive up over hangs, and the backs of u-hauls a great place to stay dry.

Don't want to scare you, Living in New Mexico I have traveled through Mexico. I would take everything in lockable cases, ie: trailer. In years past I didn't worry much, but now with the problems and viloence in and around the border towns, I would have second thoughts about going, but if I did everything would be totally secured. Plan your trip to stay in busy motels where you can park and chain your MC in front of your room. Don't stop for anyone that looks like they need help on the road. This I hate to say, but in these times a lot of the waves for help are set ups for robbery. Any more the only way I would travel to Mexico is with a GUIDED RIDE/TOUR with everthing planned. The reason I suggest you be careful and think ahead every move, is the violence in the border towns and smaller towns traveled through is not being reported in the states. The Police and Military are as corrupt as they come. OH!, and do not let anyone help with your luggage or MC, and INSPECT (SEARCH) any motel room you stay, for contraband that may have been placed as a set up, for a snitches reward. This is real important if you ride on the trains. Mexico is a beautiful place and worth seeing on a bike, just please pay attention to every detail and look out for you own. I have to work, no vacation left, or I might consider it.

My 09 Venture doesn't run right
Shamue replied to midnite's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
like said... run it high in the gears. i found mine lugs in 5th if i'm doing under 60mph and roll the throttle. So I stay in 3rd to at least 35 / 45+ mph, then 4th 45+ mph and don't even think about shifting into 5th unless I'm at 60+ mph. This is just a guide I have found keeping the RPM's up there is no lugging. But I love winding her up, smoother the faster I run. This works for me. Had to ride it a little to find my confort zone described above. But still LOVE to whind her up when I can. 08 RSV 18,000 miles- 19 replies

I would suggest you post the Yamaha Reps, email and all of us that have a noisy clutch that want corrective action could email him. The numbers might help him realise there is a force out here that feels his responce was weak and numbers (people) make Yamaha stay in business.

Aero-Dynamics question
Shamue replied to jfoster's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
In the past I have taped light ribbon to areas that seem to let a lot of air travel. The ribbon will give you an idea as to how much air is traveling through an area by its straightness or stiffness. This may help better identify the areas that you would better use a deflector and it may identify a better place to mount. I have taped ribbon of different colors from the bottom of an engine guard to the top of my windshield and found this may not be as good as a wind tunnel it does work. I also found you don't need to travel fast 30-40 mph on a calm day will work. -
HEADING EAST: Would be great to meet many of you along the way! Plans are to leave Albuquerque on Sept. 5th and be in Canton, TX on the 6th/7th for the flea market. The rest of the ride will be day by day stopping where we feel like it and seeing what we want. The remainder of the route will be to ride through Shreveport, MS. up to Pine Bluff, MS. then Memphis, Bowling Green, Nashville and Knoxville TN. Up through Johnson City, KY. to Roanoke VA., Gaithersburg and into Washington D.C. for a couple of days. Leave DC, tract to Fort Royal and travel through Shenandoah National Park. Pick up Charlotteville to Richmond and Chester VA. Drop to Durham, Raleigh and Wilson NC. Then head to the coast through Jacksonville and Topsail Beach to Wilmington NC. At this point across the state to Asheville NC and spend a couple days riding the Blue Ridge Parkway. To return home we will drop to Panamaha City FL. and hug the gulf coast through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana into Texas no Interstate riding. Near Corpus Christy turn North to Lubbock and back to Albuquerque on Sept.29th. If I'm going through / close to your area and you want to meet for coffee or ice cream leave me a POST or Pm. I'm not electronicly savy so on the road I won't be on the web unless I find a library or motel. Hope to be camping most of the time. Route will only change if we end up riding into bad weather for days at a time or hurricane weather. At that point we will turn West and track back to Yellowstone. Hope to meet many of you, DON'T WANT TO GET HOME A READ A TREAD ABOUT A SILVER 07 VENTURE BEEING SPOTTED WITH 2 HARLEYS GOING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. HA! HA! SHAMUE.

just information, unless silicone is specifically made to seal fuel areas it should not be used. I know permatex used to make one. If it does not specifically say for fuel, the silicone WILL ALWAYS get saturated by the fuel and turn into very very small beads and infiltrate you carbs and intake into the engine causing what you describe and even worse. How Do I Know This,,, talked to a permatex rep. that verified as much after a friend of mine used permatex to seal up a carburator on a drag car as a quick fix instead of a gasket. Car ran like Crap. Had to dip and rebuild the carb, clean out the intake and flushed the fuel system. Found alot of pin head size silicone bee bees plugging up the carb not much in the intake, none in the fuel system, but changed the fuel filter anyway. Car was back on the track, that afternoon. Just a thought

That's what I needed to hear, Channel 29 it is. I'll be looking for you all in my travels next month and hope your on channel 29. I'm not computer literate and don't spell well either,ha!ha! So I won't be posting while on the road, unless I stay in a motel or stop at a libirary. May have the better half send out a few updates and get #'s to call when in differant areas. I do know how to use a cell phone, just don't like to. But, I realise the best places to see and eat are best left up to Venture Riders in the area. And I do like to eat. Thanks for all the imput, hope to meet you down the road.

So the real question here is: Would they be an interest in Riders monitoring a specific CB channel while riding that would allow riders traveling in different areas of the country to make quick, easy contact? It could be know as the VR channel by members. If there already is a desiginated channel, I appolize for not knowing. I ask because, I love to meet new Riders when I travel and I am planning my 4 week trip East for the month of September and don't want to miss meeting many of the members I have enjoyed on this site. Just wondering if there is a CB channel the VR riders frequent during travels. Years ago motorcycles would monitor channel 27 to communicate when traveling in different directions. I don't travel Interstates very often so I stay away from ch.19. I have tried to raise several motorcycle on channel 27, with no luck, guess ch.27 is old school and not monitored much any more. Please respond, I hate to miss a good place to eat, stay or just kick the tires with someone new.

Four Corners and Durango sound great. Mesa Verde has camping with facilaties, there are camp grounds all around Durango. Vallecito Lake close by 30 mi. with camping and cabins. Train ride to Silverton can be fun. all day event. Cowboy BBQ close by room for hundreds, fun and good food. may need reservations for large group. Plenty of great MC riding to Quray and around the mountain to Telluride then back to Durango. Jeep rentals for some real back road adventures to old minning claims. Just a reminder that Durango is a highly attractive place for vacations and motels are booked in advance for much of the summer. You can't beat the camping in the area. I have spent a lot of time in this area and would be willing to help out planing such a meet, would only need some direction form those with experience. I know September is a bad time for alot of people but a great time for these mountains and by then vacationers have emptied out of the motels / cabins. With two kids in college middle to late August is travel for me moving them back to different schools, but will do everthing I can to make it, if this ends up being the place of choise.

I live just South of Santa Fe and wish I could be your guide for the area, but I should be on the East Coast about mid Sept. Any roads you take in Northern New Mexico will be beautiful. Not being a Santa Fe lover, I would recommend taking the Loop out of Taos to Red River and around to Eagle Nest then back to Taos, couple of hours unless you do some sight seeing, and there is plenty to do. Take the ski chair lift in Red River to the top of the mountain "Beautiful". If you have time and from Pagosa Springs I would go west on hwy 160 to Durango to hwy 550 North. Takes you through Silverton and Quray into Montrose. There take hwy 50 East through the Gunnison to Poncha Springs and take hwy 285 North through the Rocky Mountain National Park. This will bring you out just South of Denver at Interstate 25. Being off season you should not have any trouble finding places to stay, Cabins or Motels. Don't have a favorite place to eat, haven't had a bad meal in these areas. Be careful in Santa Fe, crowded narrow roads. If you have any thing you want to ask send it to me PM. Like to help out.

Vibration/Rattle From The Trunk Area
Shamue replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had the same issue with my 07. Drove me to test ride another RSV to see if I could find the noise on a seperate bike. No, Luck. For weeks I checked everything possible I thought. Could have the bike on the side stand and reeve the engine and the noise was always there. Finally looked at the speaker slots and found the end of one cracked and it would viberate causing the noise. A small amount of ABS glue and riding quiet now. Maybe,??? -
Victory mades some nice motorcycles, but after test riding several found for a touring machince they have a ways to go to get the confort of a RSV. The Victory you are inquiring about is very clumsy. It is wide bodied, very long and I'm 6'3" and it was hard to back into parking spots. I would get very tired having to man handle the thing every time I wanted to park and back in. Because of it's mass low speed is not much fun either. I did like the ride on the road, mountain curves would take some more getting used to. Then as mentioned being air cooled I could feel some heat build up around my legs I think was more from the side covers getting warm than the engine heat itself. There wasn't enough there to make me really want one other than the styling. When I test ride a MC, I ride the one I am looking at getting a couple of times and in between I ride my bike so I can compair the difference without getting the instant new ride buzz that can ware off quickly on and new mc and the new mc not really having the long term ride I thought it would. I really feel that motorcyles are an individual choise and after a couple of test rides and you put one through the paces if it's what you want, GO FOR IT. 2 wheels are always better than 4.

I've had a problems for 25 yrs. with my little fingers going numb then the numbness spreading to the rest of my fingers. After trying everthing I could think of, changing handlebars, position, grips and seeing a few doctors, it was determined the position of my elbows was causing pressure on some nerves that go to my hands. Started using elbow braces that would support and straighten out my elbows. Took some getting used to, but now ride without them. Have found I have to keep my arms straight and not bent to much and this has solved much of the problem. Once in awhile when I ride 500/600 miles or more in a day and get a little tired I feel my little fingers going numb and reposition my arms the feeling goes away. Since I have found and trained myself to a running position that elimiates this from happening, having my hands go numb is a rare coccurance. Don't know if this could help your situtation....Good Luck.

I feel the same way but I like to know what to expect good or bad when I can't hold it in my hand. I also found a list of several good reviews, so I made the plunge and ordered a pair of #7015 and #7007 this afternoon. I like the looks and the foam to keep the wind from cutting the eyes, the flip ups I hope work as well for driving at night. Will evaluate this when they arrive in a couple of weeks. I normally ride with a set of perscription glaicer glasses and hope these work as well. Won't have to worry about these growing legs, getting lost or damaged.

I looked at the site and then called the 800#, talked to rep. not much additional info. than what was listed on the site. I, too am going to order a pair to check them out, worth $50 to see. Only other thing I did was look up complaints about Zenni Optical and there were several. As far as I could tell since it is an internet company not much support after orders are made. A few complaints about the perscriptions not being correct and it was usually on an order of 2 pairs of glasses at the same time. This is fairly new company that is doing a very high volume, hope they have worked out the problems. Nothing there that would make me not try them once for the price..??.

James, my brother and I are also planning to ride the BRP in SEPT. should be there around the 9th 10th not sure yet. Going straight to the wall first should be there on the 8th or 9th then spending the next couple weeks in that area, have to go to Wilson and Top Sail Beach to check on some property but plan on spending most of the time riding the parks and small roads. Have to be back to work on the 28th in Albuquerque,NM. It would be nice to make part of that ride with you and your brother, also planning on meeting other VR Riders along the way, They will know the best places to eat. Shamue
