  1. James, my brother and I are also planning to ride the BRP in SEPT. should be there around the 9th 10th not sure yet. Going straight to the wall first should be there on the 8th or 9th then spending the next couple weeks in that area, have to go to Wilson and Top Sail Beach to check on some property but plan on spending most of the time riding the parks and small roads. Have to be back to work on the 28th in Albuquerque,NM. It would be nice to make part of that ride with you and your brother, also planning on meeting other VR Riders along the way, They will know the best places to eat. Shamue
  2. If you have a Car Quest auto parts store in the area with a good counterman. They sell Standard Ignition brand ignition under the carquest brand and in their catalog is lengths of silicone cable with carbon or copper wire, in the same cataloge they sell different plug clips and boots to match so you can make your own custom wires. Or you can look at the pictures of the made up plug wires and hopefully fing an exact fit or one real close. Don't use their second lne of BRAVO branded wires not sutible for a perminate fix but could be carried as a spare to get you down the road if you had to.
  3. Does anyone know of a chrome or other accessory for the rear spearker grills on a Gen. 2 RSV. I'm afraid the plastic is a very weak design and want to cover the origional grill in the passenger armrests. Already had one rib break and was able to fix it with glue for ABS plastic. Don't think I'm the only one out here that sees' this as an issue, so if you don't know of a custom made accessory and have performed some type of modification, I would be interested in hearing about how you solved this concern. SHAMUE
  4. I checked today the glass cleaner i use is called "SPRAYWAY" (not sprayaway) it is good for plastics and states so on the front of the can. Good for the Windshield, ABS, Chrome, Glass and Plastic. I carry this with me on trips makes cleaning the bike at the end of the day on a trip very easy.
  5. I would agree and forgot to mention it because I was thinking you wanted the experience of painting. But after I did my '81 wing, I decided if I ever had another bike painted someone else would do it. And sure enough a few years later I wanted my HD wide Glide painted. I took all the metal off, did the prep work and was able to work a deal with the local Macco shop here in Albuquerque to do the paint. I used a root beer poly and 3 coats of clear, I must say the job was excellent and people would also ask who did the paint and couldn't believe it was Macco. These guys work at a fast pace on car / trucks all day and it was a real treat for them to do something different and I found they went the extra mile to make it perfect. I would definitely use the Macco here in Albuquerque again. Very good experience. Both fenders, both tank halfs cost 250. they furnished the paint and clear.
  6. Do some research on the type of paint. I repainted an 81 GW many years ago and they had just come out with a paint for plastics and rubber that would flex and not chip or crack. Sorry can't remember the brand but a good automotive paint supplier will know. Plenty of color choises, I picked a burgandy that looked black in dim or low light and deep burgandy in the bright sun, very pretty color. To test the paint I painted a piece of abs plastic and after prepping it, I twised it in a tight circle without any paint cracking or chipping. Then put 3 coats of clear wet sanded each coat then buffed out the last coat. Use plenty of tack cloth and keep the dust and paint residue off. Came out very smooth and glassy. Still has the paint today and after years of had times it still looks great. Good luck and don't be in a hurry, beauty takes time and a lot of detail prep. Have fun, I did. But don't think I would do it again to a wing.
  7. I found a glass cleaner that has no ammonia or harsh additives in it at the local office supply. I even says it is safe for plastics. Sorry I don't have a can with me to get the brand, but will post later. I have been using it for a year and no damage to the windshield, also use it on the plastic parts of the mc, great for loosening and cleaning bugs, dust dirt and grime. I had some big dried bugs dried hard to the bike after long trips through Nebraska and spray let them soak a few then wipe away. Very easy. It sprays out a white foam, comes in a six pack. It specificily says SAFE FOR PLASTICS. Best I've found in my 30+ years of riding. I will post the Brand tomorrow, this product may be availible in walmats, dollor stores or sam's and costco now.
  8. Hey, Texaskid, sorry you have to leave Calif. but glad you are moving to NM. I have been having a hard time finding VR riders out here. Several owners, but not many that like to ride. Most I'm finding aren't interested in Venture Rider.Org and are not interested in meeting people with like interest(riding). Hope to catch up with you and your brother when you land here. You picked a great place to live. Can ride almost year round and if it feels to cold you can ride south 75 miles where it is warm enough. Don't think you will miss Calif. unless you left some family there. Shamue
  9. I ride an 08 RSV and when i was picking it up at the dealer, a close friend of mine that is a old time mc mechanic advised that after awhile it might back fire once in awhile and if it got too anoying he could plug off / disable the emmission system and the back firing would stop. Haven't had any issues so i don't know what would have to be done, maybe someone out here on the net has more information..???
  10. have an 81 1100 wing its on the right side down low just abone the front foot peg. it may be dirty as oil usually gets and won't look like a site glass. it's about 2/3 the size of the RSV site glass. best to check the oil on the center stand.
  11. Seafoam is great, you could also try 20 oz bottle of Chevron Tecron in a full tank of gas. I like it better for removing gum in the fuel system and there is enough lub in it not to dry out the system. Don't forget to replace the fuel filter before any work. I there was gum building up in the tank you may need to change the filter more than once. I've used Tecron 16 oz in generators and lawn mowers that don't get much use and idle rough to start but after a tank start purring like new. Shamue
  12. Sea King I liked your info on the windshield your using. This answered a question I had, which windshield to get? I too, have a problem seeing through the windshield when it rains and I ride rain or shine. The biggest problem is riding at night with the truck and car wash spraying back, can't see crap. On my last bike the shield was just right could relax in the seat and the shield was right above eye level then in rain I could sit up without streaching and see over the top giving me a clear view. Thanks, Now I know what shield I'm getting before I cut the origional down.
  13. I would rule out © because the fuel would be gravity fed to the carbs and the reserve gas drained during your initial test. My best guess would be the fuel filter and the liquid gas weight in the tank was heavy enough to push / force fuel through the filter with the assistance of the fuel pump. As the weight of the fuel decreased the weight of the fuel may not have been sufficient enough for the fuel pump to suck the fuel through a dirty filter. I have had this type of issue with a fuel injected vehicle where the tank was full but no fuel through the filter to the engine. Took the outlet hose of the filter and fuel would pass through, but hooking up to the engine / engine would not get gas. Found out many of these filters expecially MC filters are very fine screens / mesh / fiber and it takes very little dirt to stop one up even though the filter looks clean to the eye. Wish you would have done a test with the filter completly out and run the bike, that is how i discovered my problem with the vehicle... replaced filter and on the rode again. Glad your on the rode now, not sure if this helps but....??

I want to thank everyone that has or is or will make suggestions for this ride. By planning a trip this early will give me time to do some research on the suggested travel information and help me prepare a contact list to meet as many people as I can prior to heading out. As everyone knows there is no better feeling than meeting new people with the same interest (motorcycles) around the country and that is exactly what I hope to do on this trip being new to Venture Rider. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Shamue
  15. I had a parts store for 14 yrs and as much as saab has built nice vehicles once they near that 80 to 100000 mile mark things tend to ware out or brake. The after market has a lot of replacement parts (napa, carquest, zone, pep boys) but found out through experience many or the aftermarket parts were different just enough they would not give proper readings for the computer to set the car right. i.e. temp switches, fan switches, injectors, alts., voltage reg.) Just enough of a difference it was better getting the parts for customers from the dealer not to have further issues. Also the difference is enough you should not have the corner mechanic do much work on one unless saab trained and the dealer is as expensive as a bmw or mercedes. Don't want to rain on you parade, just thought you might be interested in knowing my experience. There are very good ones out there same as bmw and mercedes but when something goes wrong expecially electrical it can be expensive to repair. It is difficult to find knoweledgable mechanics when traveling the back roads, small towns, bigger cities 100000 or so that should not be a problem. Then again this car may not have problems for many miles or years. Emisson sniff the radiator while open and the car running and warm. The sniffer can tell if you get high readings there may be a head gasket leak. Good Luck, and always have them checked by a qualified certified mechanic.

I will post more when my route is definite and dates secured for the specific cities I will visit. Other than that while on the fly this adventure is open to change for places to ride, visit, eat and meet venture members. I will be in touch with as many as I can. Thanks for the invites, hope to visit soon. Shamue
  17. I'll be riding East in September for a few weeks. Plan is to leave NM around the 5th sept. head to DC Vietnam Memorial and others, then travel the Blue Ridge Pwy down to Asheville NC. East to Wilson and Top Sail Beach NC. Plan to turn back West there and hug the gulf coast with side trips getting back to NM around Sept. 25th. Looking for good places to camp and the mom and pop places to eat. Love BBQ. Been this way several times by myself but it's always good to here from others that have special rides, places to stay and eat. This will be my brother's first trip cross country on a MC and need to get him hooked. I'm riding an 08 RSV he will be on an 09 HD Electra. This may seem early to plan but I'm the type that likes to see the out of the way places, and do the back roads. Would like to meet members on the route as I feel like the Lone Ranger out here. Thanks.
  18. While you are there, take a ride to the Vietnam Vet Memorial in Eagles Nest approx. 5 miles away. Dr. Westfall built the chappel in memory of his son that was killed in that war. The state has taken over the operation of the park and a remodel is now underway. It is worth the visit and learning of the Chappel's story. I usually attend the celebration over Veteran's Day weekend. Maybe I can catch you there, it's only a 3.5 hour ride for me and I love to ride the loop through Red River N.M. If you have never been to the area it is remarkable how these small communities come together for the differant events. A MUST SEE FOR SURE!!
  19. I must agree with most of everything mentioned. I have ridden for 30+ yrs on all types of bikes. BMW to light and straight up for two on long rides. Honda GW bottom heavy at slow speed and wants to pull over when turning slow, sit straight up, too much electronics for me, no room to move in riding position. HD nice bike, vibrates all the time, and have to definately have to install riding pegs to get confortable foot positions. Usually get tired after a few hndred miles (300 or so) or these models and pit stops get longer as the day and miles roll by. Now the 08 RSV I started riding last August. Very confortable, nice balance at low and high speed. Love the set and leg position without having to make any modifications. Water cooled means few if no engine problems. Yamaha is one MFG that throughly tests products, many times for years before making a change to get it right. After first 800 miles, made 1200 mile round trip to Nebraska and back. Was not tired and have made this trip twice since with the same confort. 6'2" 270# and I ride hard. Wife loves to ride and also feels this is the best riding MC we have had in years. She can sleep confortably and feels very secure on the back. One last thing even though I still like the HD's, it seems on any long ride, miles-days-whatever if there is a problem with a MC it is usually a Harley. (USUALLY) I am very glad I purchased the RSV.
  20. All of us should be so fortunate. Nice way to start a day, and a better way to end it. Enjoyed your ride, wishful thinking!
  21. I also had same problem. Have a '07 and radio acted the exact same way. Since under warranty took it to the dealer. 1st time said it was a loose plug connection in the faring. Fix lasted 2 weeks, 2nd time same problem, back to the dealer, found more loose plugs and made fix. Afetr two days same problem, I' getting a little peaved and take the bike in for repair again. Mech. was able to find and isolate the problem. Bad grounding of the main plug to the radio. This is a multi pin plug that grounds by the outer metal case, that had a rubber boot that sheilds moister from the connection. Once they got the continious ground, I have not had any more issues. There is a service bulletion about loose plugs but nothing on the ground. Good Luck, I can't rider without my Tunes.
  22. When ever monry is involved and you have been wronged, DON"T WAIT to get it resolved. A phone call should be made to Yamaha Customer Service from the dealers sales office. That way there is no misundersanding as to what is decided. To many times an agent will say they are waiting for a call back or more info. before a problem can be fixed. Usually a delay tactic to let the wronged frustrated enough that they/you just give up. Deal with this at the Dealer's Location, you start calling Yamaha Corp. Customer Service from there, I would VENTURE to say this situation will be resolved very Quickly. Shamue
