  1. I sure agree with Saddlebum and Marcarl's comments about NHL hockey. On a related note, it was also amazing to see the reaction of so many Canadians across the country who were glued to the TV for the game and who partied in the streets after. Here in Toronto, the centre of the city was closed down due to crowds in the streets. To me, this makes the comparison being made to today's typical NHL hockey even more vivid.
  2. Good tips and instructions from all. Recently, there were also some posts about a modification to the centre stand which interested me. The mod was to basically to shorten the centre stand. I am thinking of doing that. Does anybody have any views on or experience with this mod?
  3. Neat snow picture! We are in the middle of a snow storm here in Ontario right now. Until a few weeks ago, I was able to ride my 88VR on dry roads when the temp ocasionally rose above freezing. With snow, I swith to my other Yamaha Venture shown in the attached picture taken on a trail here in Ontario.
  4. Looks like a great mod. Almost makes me wish I had a 2nd gen.
  5. Good luck Gene on a full and rapid recovery. Also, don't be too hard on yourself - it could happen to any of us.
  6. Payment sent by Paypal. Thanks Gary for making this available. Evan Merritt
  7. Bob - Been away sledding (on my Yamaha Venture snowmobile) so I am now trying to catch up on posts. Good luck with your trailering! Would like to make one comment not addressed by others, although you are probably on top of this. Proper tongue weight is important. Insufficient tongue can be dangerous.
  8. I did the same and my liquid acid battery is still working just fine. However, I expect to replace that battery this season with a Deka battery. Any reason why the drilled hole trick for the sensor wouldn't work with this new battery?
  9. Yes, add me to the list please. Great initiative!
  10. I am not a wrench but I can share my experience with you. Others may have better advice. I found that with the right tools, all you need to do is remove the side cover. Personally, I would also use compressed air to clean out the wells before removing the plugs so nothing falls into the cylinder. I use a a combo of extensions and possible a flex joint with my 3/8 drive to allow me to reach and remove/install the plugs. I found that with the right length extension and some flexibility, I can easily do the job with only my side covers removed.
  11. Carl - I don't have facts to give you but you sure have my best wishes for success.
  12. Good luck Mike. I sure understand the need for reducing costs where you can. Got lucky today with the weather here in Toronto and was able to ride a bit and I took the time to take a pic of a Plastex repair job on my 88VR. The luggage box lid was cracked so bad that a chunk about 1 inch square was missing. With some scotch tape on one side, I filled the hole with Plastex and the result was a repair that seems stronger than original. I replaced some missing tabs in a similar way as you can cut / sand / drill the Plastex once it is bonded and set.
  13. Very interesting Kent. Thanks for reporting this.
  14. This is interesting as I have been trying to figure out what I have. My 88VR came with a mounting bar bolted in two places on each side to the bike (you can see the chrome bar in the pictures). I was in a cycle salvage shop and found a backrest off a GL1500, but missing half of the mounting bracket to attach it to the chrome bar. Mother fabricated the missing piece for me and voilà --- a very comfortable backrest that doesn't interfere with the passenger seating position and that is a good match for my original seat. I still don't know if the mounting bar was made for a VR, but it sure looks like it was. Appreciate any info on that.
  15. I agree. No doubt I can ride much longer and more comfortable since I added by backrest.
  16. I think because of years of bike riding that I may be more aware of defencive driving although I am not sure I drive better as a result. My wife tells all our friends that she feels much safer as a passenger riding with me on the bike than in our van and I think she is right.
  17. I need to at least lubricate my head bearings this spring on my 88VR. Does anyone have similar advice for lubricating or replacing these bearings on a 1st gen?
  18. I have two daughters, no sons. The girls are now mature adults (born in 68 and 72) with two kids each. I thought long and hard about whether I would I encourage or discourage them and in the end, I helped each buy and learn to ride their own street bikes (Honda 250's) as soon as they turned 16. Despite being more aware of the dangers than most parents, my logic was how, as a good parent, could I prevent them from experiencing what meant so much to me when I was a teenager and had my own motorcycle (thanks to my father). I did try to teach them to ride defensively but the truth is, I worried every time one of my daughters left home on her bike. Neither had any accidents and both daughters now value that experience, as I did. In fact, this summer, we plan on buying some good helmets so that I can take my older grandsons for their first rides with their Papa. My daughters are excited about this because of their own good memories.
  19. My situation is sort of the opposite and is more of an annoyance than a real problem. Anyway, I would appreciate any advice on whether there might be an easy repair. In my case, the neutral light works properly. It is the gear indicator which has gone from showing neutral to showing 1st when I am actually in neutral. Is there an easy fix or adjustment for this?
  20. Last winter, I was thinking about finding a more comfortable touring bike than my Pacific Coast especially for my frequent long runs to the cottage (over 200 miles). That triggered memories of an old riding buddy's VR back in the late 80's. Did a google search which turned up an 88VR and also led me to this site. Had a quick look at the VR and was turned off by a several problems including no clutch pressure, an E4 error message etc. However, I was so impressed with the the helpful info and people on this site that I bought the bike. Thanks to the amazing information and help of many members, buying that VR turned out to be one of my better decisions in 2009.
  21. Great report Ben.
  22. Whether you make one out of two or decide to repair one of them, you might want to also check out the video on the Plastex web site that shows how the Plastex kit can be used to shape new tabs or rebuild missing pieces. It can be finished so you can't see the joints. Several members including Mother and Saddkebum have restored crashed VR's with this stuff.
  23. Fascinating Jack. The technology seems to be solid. Who knows what people will buy in the future.
  24. I tend to be an ---optimist!
