Some time ago I read an article on Harleys Evolution engine. The man in charge of development said they could not get the tolerances they wanted in America as they could not guarantee the volume. Consequently they had the engine parts manufactured in Japan and assembled them in the USA. That was a while ago so I don't know if that has changed since then. One main reason Japanese, and other, manufacturers built plants in the US was to avoid heavy import duties. I think with trade agreements those duties have been reduced to the point where they no longer need the US facilities. With NAFTA it is cheaper for US manufacturers to move their plants to Mexico. It is not just cars and bikes, the Evil Empire (Walmart) is destroying American and Canadian jobs daily. The largest freighter in the world is for Walmart and just to go between the US and China.

I am 65 and I doubt I will be buying another cruiser, this one should last until I am too old and feeble to handle it. At that time I will downsize so I can keep riding. My older son is waiting for that day as he wants the bike, no mater how old. A member of our Legion just got a sidecar put on as he can no longer hold his bike up, he is 90. One problem for Yamaha is that mostly older people ( in years not spirit ) buy cruisers and they tend to hang on to them for a long time. That being said I could be tempted by a Venture with some V Max and FJ dna. I may be older but I am not that old.

Side roads 50-60 mph as I like to relax and enjoy the scenery. Highways fast as I can just to get to someplace more interesting. If the speed regulator is aboard then at 60 mph there is a loud nagging sound and thumping on the helmet on any road.

For small I would put up my old Austin Healy, Triumph, or MGA against a smart car. Those cars were solid steel and built for tough competition.
-
One problem with those cars is the light weight and boxy design. They had pictures of one in the Victoria paper after an accident. At first I thought the wreckage was a motorcycle. You could not tell it had been a car. It was on the highway when a gust of wind pushed it into the center divider, it hit that then went into a couple of cars. The driver survived but if there had been a passenger there is no way he could have survived, that entire side of the car was gone.

So why aren't you smiling? Sit on that bike and you just gotta smile.

My '85 Suzuki Madura had a great V4. During development they ran it at 14,000 rpm with no problems. The street bike had a rev limiter at 11,500. With a 1/4 turn throttle you got up there in a hurry. My friend still has the bike.

When you get to B.C. I suggest you plan on a week in Nelson and rive the various loops with Nelson as your base. When you get as far as Hope B.C. I suggest you branch off onto Highway 7 to Horseshoe Bay then take the ferry to Naniamo. Ride up to Long Beach and explore then head down to Victoria and take the ferry to Port Washington and continue south along the coast road. If you do get to Vancouver Island let me know and we could meet up. Saltspring is a great place.

The important thing is to keep hailye from feeling pressured or that anything is her fault. First protect her, then nail him. Glad to hear it is coming to an end.

I rode the bike to work one day with full leathers. I went up to the cafeteria where the crew were having coffee. Then the wasp woke up. It started at the bottom of my jacket and worked its way down. The jacket flew off followed by the chaps being undone. By then the girls were cheering and yelling "take it off" Damn thing had got inside my jeans. That was a few years ago, now they would be yelling "keep it on". Got to work one day and was just about to get off the bike when I looked down. A wasp was just getting to its feet and was not happy after running into my jacket. It was sitting right ..you know where... there were several jokes made about me sitting on my bike in the parking lot beating off.

Just about all the media are in trouble financially including here in Canada. I have found Fox to be one of the more sensationalist and least reliable of the media, but that is just my opinion after catching some of their broadcasts.
-
Don't forget, the job of the media is not to report the news, or facts. The job of the media is to make money for the owners. It is sad that the death of Jackson sells more advertising space than the story about the marines. The media will always go with the money.

Beware using your debit card at the gas pump
Sailor replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
I use my debit card but I have a $10,000 overdraft protection on it which I got when I was building my house and just kept. It is prime plus 2%. I have never used it but it is there in case I do need it. I use my credit card sparingly and always pay it off before any interest is due. That is an interest free loan. They keep upping my limit even though I don't get anywhere near it. If I had to I would go into my overdraft to pay off the credit card. 6-8% on overdraft rather than 20-30% on credit card. -
I paid $ 20,000 for mine but that was brand new on Vancouver island. What it is worth depends on how badly you want it.

Highway pegs make a big difference. I also found my bike will go farther on a tank of gas than my butt will. You can ride a lot farther if you stop and walk around every so often.

Windshield and Ventilation
Sailor replied to OldBear's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I put on highway pegs. They let me move my feet away from the engine out into the airflow. Also had a sheepskin seat cover. It went with my last bike so I think I will get another one. -
I have hit the rev limiter and there is no mistaking it. The rev limiter on my Madura was 11500 and again, there was no mistaking when you hit it.

On my 02 I always cock the wheel to the left, it feels more stable that way. Also if you want to put a padlock on it has to be all the way left. Makes sense to me, but then I often make no sense at all.
-
It is not always about the mileage you pack on. I have only 28,000 on my 02 but it is hard to rack up mileage when you live on an island that is only 20 miles long by 5 wide and only has one main road end to end. I can, and do, get to Vancouver island and have covered it end to end. It takes two ferry rides and half a day just to get to the mainland.

Will be going to the Kruzi'n the Kootenays. Due to her bad back my wife can't ride far and we don't have a trailer so I will ride while she drives her van. That way she can take all the luggage she wants and shop while we are there. It works for us. We both get to the same place at the same time and are happy. She will ride with me once we are there.

Work? Wuzzat? Been retired 6 years now. Yup...I rode it today and the day before etc.

I have always liked the FJ's. If I did not have the Venture that would be my next choice.
