  1. I found my Venture to be a bit of a handful at first (30 inch inseam) but I soon got used to it and don't even notice it now. I have ridden through some real downpours and found the protection to be very good. I came off the equivalent of a V Max so I like the power and high revs. I do not like the lack of instrumentation. As soon as I got the Avons on it the handling improved. I would like a bit more of a rumble in the exhaust but that is minor. I find it very comfortable to ride. To my mind I think these reviewers were expecting the same characteristics as a big v-twin and were disappointed when they got something else.
  2. I used to have something called "fish scale". I got it in a sporting goods store. It reflected like fish scale, ie...it changed colours depending on the light hitting it. You could get it in silver/blue, silver/red, etc. I had it on my old helmet and I could see car drivers and passengers looking at me all the time. It really got their attention. I can't find it any more but would like to get some again.
  3. Just a thought but did you change the oil recently? If so what did you use? That ultra slippery synthetic stuff can cause your clutch to slip.
  4. Silver T brought up an excellent point. It has been shown that a person talking on a cell phone is even more likely to be involved in an accident than a drunk driver. Add to that soccer moms running late, men thinking about business deals or mad at the boss and there are not many drivers out there who are not distracted in one way or another. When I am driving I don't usually have the radio on and I don't even talk to the passengers, I drive. Again it comes down to educating the drivers.
  5. Relax Rick.....for the first time I actually bought snow tires for the truck. This pretty much guarantees no snow for us this winter. Speaking of the truck, I had better go scrape the moss off it. ( blankety blank rain)
  6. There is only so much you can do. When I was driving ambulance I was amazed at the number of drivers who did not see a big white van with lights and siren going. I know a number of firemen, they have the same complaint. Being defensive and acting before the situation gets out of hand is good. There is a real blitz in the media each spring warning car drivers to watch for kids going to school and bicycle riders. I think it does raise their awareness somewhat but there is never a word about motorcycles. The government needs to include motorcycles. I have noticed that when I put a couple small Canadian flags on my antennas it does get their attention a bit more. It is something that is unusual and the motion catches their eye. Public education is the final answer.
  7. Some time ago I saw a great ad. It was on English TV. It showed a car pulling out in front of a bike, turning left into the bike etc. Then it showed the bike pulling out in front of the car, turning left into the car etc. In each case the car was demolished and the biker is telling the cops " Gee, I just didn't see him." Wish they would run it here.
  8. I used to drive ambulance. One time while making an emergency run through Victoria we lost our lights and siren. We called the police for an escort. They were reluctant. I found out why as we went through the city with the police car in front of us with its lights and siren we were almost t boned by people cutting us off or trying to jump the light. People need to be educated to the dangers out there. They need to be aware. Only extensive public awareness campaigns and heavy fines can raise the awareness. On our island we had a recent death. A guy who had drunk two bottles of wine and had several beers, was well over the legal limit, went around a corner on the wrong side of the road and killed a nurse on her way to work. He had several previous drunk driving convictions and was only charged with driving without due care. A minor offence. A woman who had 27 charges for driving offences including drunk driving and going 70 through school zones went around a corner on the wrong side of the road and killed a biker and his wife. She was out driving and again got caught going 75 in a school zone a week after the accident. Why are these people still driving?
  9. I try to follow Mark Twains' advice " It is better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt" That is not to say that there are fools posting here, just that I don't know what I am talking about most of the time.
  10. The roads are nice cruising roads. If you want to scare yourself try doing them at 120 mph or so, but watch out for the bears....and the elk....and the deer....and slow moving Harleys.
  11. Just caught part of a report from, I think, Toronto. Some thief ran up to a woman selling poppies and tried to grab her tray. A passerby saw him and beat the crap out of him.
  12. It wasn't too bad for us this year. We only had one donation box stolen. Usually we lose two or three. Mostly it is kids doing a grab and run. I have noticed a distinct change in the schools lately. Before we had teachers telling the kids we were war mongers and not to listen to us. We had to go after a couple of them and point out the error of their ways. The last couple of years the teachers have been behind us.
  13. Just got confirmation of our reservations for July 1st, 2nd, 3rd at the Venture Riders rate. I didn't even ask what that was but it was pretty reasonable last year.
  14. We will be there. Just trying to get the boss to decide what day she wants to go up on. I think she wants to go a couple days early to get in some golf.
  15. Hey Rick, I always use the " It wasn't me, it was my evil twin " excuse.
  16. Just got back from our ceremonies. It is very emotional. My dad was in Europe in WWII and my wifes nephew got blown out of an armored car in Afghanistan. I was lucky enough to be between the two. I had to give a speech at the school yesterday. The most effective point I made was that the average age of the people in WWII was 20. Hard to imagine.
  17. I have long been involved in the Royal Canadian Legion. 29 years as a member, 12 years on the executive, three years as president of our branch. The poppies are everywhere in Canada. The rights to the poppy are owned by the War veterans Assn. The Legion distributes them and collects donations on behalf of the war veterans. We hold the money in trust. The Legion gets none of the money. We are allowed to distribute the money on their behalf. It first goes to veterans in need, second to descendants of veterans in need, third to bursaries for descendants of veterans to aid in schooling, fourth to care for the elderly. All money collected each year must be disbursed in that year. If there is money left over at the end of the year it may be used for the benefit of the community. In our area we have bought equipment for the hospital, volunteer fire department, volunteer ambulance service, elder care, etc. All other money raised by the Legion goes to school programs, local charities and care for the elderly. On our small island we usually raise about $14,000.00 with the poppies and another $25,000.00 through our meat draws. I have been tagged to make a speech to the school kids this year ( didn't hide fast enough) I was told to keep it short and make it relate to them. This is this years speech. Tommorow is Remembrance Day. It is a day when we remember and honor those who fought for our freedom. Many died. Many came home damaged physically, mentally or emotionally. Most of these were young people. Their average age was 20 to 22. Can you imagine graduating high school and a year later instead of having a job or going to university, having a girlfriend and going to parties, you are flying bombers or fighters, manning machine guns or driving tanks while the enemy tries to kill you? Imagine being a sailor in the merchant marine. They had almost no weapons or defenses, they knew they were going to be attacked yet they sailed anyway, bringing vital supplies to Europe. That is what these people did. They were ordinary people, like you or I, who did an extraordinary job. There was an evil force which wanted to impose their will on the rest of the world. They wanted to impose genocide, mass murder, racism, slavery and blind obedience on everyone. The people we remember and honor tomorrow said "NO! Those are no part of OUR world!" They laid down their future and took up arms that we would have a future. For that we owe them our thanks. The poppy is one symbol of our thanks. Tomorrow we honor and remember them and we must never forget them. K. Butler
  18. Post whore...does that mean you were but now you are not? Does that mean you are addicted to postmen, or women? Does that mean you are past being a whore? Please clarify.
  19. I am 65. About 6 years ago I had to go in for my mariners physical. They stress tested me and the Doctors were amazed. They informed me I had the heart of a 36 year old. I informed them that in my opinion you are only as old as the girls you feel. Don't anybody tell my wife or I will not get much older.
  20. How about a little larger version that would fit a Venture? That is great.
  21. Age....65 and climbing spirit......25 and holding Speed......120 and climbing Thoughts 69 and.....oh lets not go there.
  22. I used to use sta-bil but I found sea foam works better. I use a half can of sea foam and top up the tank. I run it for about 5 min then shut off the fuel and run it until it stops. I take the battery out and put it on a tender. No problems at all.
  23. I live on an island. Up here bikes are first on/first off. The waters across Georgia Strait can get very rough but there has been no problem if you use the blocks provided and leave the bike in gear. If there are no bike blocks you can use two car blocks stacked up.
  24. I replied to an ad for a boat on Used Victoria. It was one of those too good to be true prices. I never got a reply despite 4 e-mails. Guess he did not like my questions about dry rot or liens.
  25. We don't get trick or treaters in our neighborhood but that is due to the steep road and distance. The parents drive them to a small 2 block subdivision nearby and they get hit hard. Each year a bunch of us contribute candy to the homes in that area. It sure used to be fun as a kid going out in costume and as a teen doing harmless mischief . These days mischief usually involves spray cans or guns.
