  1. Had the same thing happen a few months ago. No visible damage. The tank was 15 years old. When I grabbed the inlet pipe to move the old tank out the entire assembly disintegrated. The iron pipe inside the tank was nothing but rust. A friend who is a plumber says that the new tanks should be replaced every 5 years. Another friend care takes a mansion which has 6 sixty gallon tanks. He says about every 6 years they have to replace them all. I had an old tank in my cabin. I have no idea how old it was but I know it was already old when I bought the cabin 30 years ago. When I tore down ( it collapsed) the cabin last year the tank was still working fine. When I hauled it to the scrap yard they said it was bronze and gave me $100.00 for it.

Hey Rick, my letter was published in the Times Colonist today:banana:
  6. Leave our house and ride down to Fulford. Take the Ferry to Swarts Bay. Take the back roads in to Victoria. Hang a right and ride over the Malahat. Stop at the top of the "hat" for a great view over the Canadian Gulf Islands and the American San Juans. Continue up to Duncan and hang a right at Herd road. Take first left (at flashing light) and ride through Chemainus and re-join the highway at Ladysmith. Continue north and take a right just before Cassidy and head out to Yellow Point. Stop at the Crow and Gate ( old English style pub) for lunch. Continue north. Take the bypass around Nanaimo ( watch for radar traps). Continue north along the coast to Parksville/Qualicum. Head back south to Crofton and take the ferry to Vesuvius on Saltspring and back home. Alternative route....From home take the ferry at Vesuvius to Crofton. Take a right at the stop sign and head north through Chemainus and Nanaimo, Qualicum and keep going north to Comox/Courtney and turn left and ride up to the Mt Washington ski resort. Stop for lunch ( No snow in the summer) Great views. Return home via Crofton. Alternative route...Ferry to Crofton and head north but at Parksville head west Stop at Cathedral Grove. Huge trees. Keep going west to Port Alberni. Stop for lunch at the Rock Swale cafe. Continue west over the mountain to Long Beach. Head up to Tofino for coffee and check out the beaches along the way. If you saw the You Gotta be here "ads for B.C. then you saw part of Cathedral grove and Long Beach. Head back via Crofton. Ferry from Fulford and back roads in to Victoria. Hang a right and then left off the Highway and through Langford then the coast road to Sooke. Stop at the Sooke Pot Holes along the way. From Sooke head north to Port Renfrew. From there head east over the mountains to Lake Cowichan. Take the back roads in to Duncan. Stop at Craig St pub for lunch.Continue out to Crofton and ferry back to Saltspring. On the way out take the back roads. If you are in a hurry you can always return via the freeway. For those who are into hot rods there is a car show nearly every weekend starting up at Comox/Courtney and moving south every other week to Victoria. I got "Best Choped Top " for my Merc at Qualicum one year ( about 800 cars n the show). At all ferry's go to the front of the line. Bikes are first on/first off. "
  7. When dealing with a jackass the first thing to do is smack it between the eyes with a 2x4 to get its attention, then you build a fire under its belly to get it moving. The law can be a jackass.
  8. Well dang! Sorry about your luck. Tee shirt weather here today:nanner:. If it's any consolation it is supposed to rain in a couple days.

Saw your letter in the Province Rick. Good one. I have now been informed by two police agencies that they have been instructed to target motorcycles.

Got a reply from the paper, they want me to cut the letter to 250 words. Working on it.

"Aiming" They actually aim? It bothers me too that any kid can go in and buy a Hyabusa and go crazy with it. Tying insurance to horsepower and value would make more sense than just engine size.

How big is a bicycle? I think it is an education issue. Car drivers just are not trained to look for motorcycles.

It just keeps getting better and better. This all fits in with what I was told, and my son was told, that the police in B.C. have been instructed to target motorcycles. I remember when they were trying to get tougher drinking and driving laws in. A police officer advised me that if there was any type of traffic accident they were to find any excuse to put down that alcohol was involved. I saw them put down an unopened 6 pack in the trunk of a car as "alcohol related".

I do like the paint gun idea. Could we have ball bearings as well as paint balls?

Thanks Rick. I've already got that one. The one I am thinking of was a long time ago, a year or two I think. It was research on why motorcycle deaths were increasing at a rate faster than the growth of new motorcyclists.

There is an article in todays paper stating the the provincial government is going to crack down on motorcycle riders due to there having been several deaths recently. Most of the deaths they refer to were caused by automobile drivers turning left into the motorcyclist or pulling out in front of the motorcyclist. I intend to send a letter to the paper and to the motor vehicles branch explaining that it is the automobile drivers who need to be cracked down on. Some time ago I saw a thread here which showed research into motorcycle accidents and the increase in the death rate was largely due to the increase in SUV's and high pickups on the road. I would like to use that thread but I cannot find it. Does anyone remember it and can you tell me where to find it. Thanks
  18. Just found out a local girl was killed over in Duncan. Usual story, woman in a car turned left right into her.
  19. Got geese. The swans are back on the lake. Predictions are for a hotter and dryer summer than usual. Due to having little snow they are worried about water shortages this summer.
  20. Have a nap. Did I mention I like being retired?

    send help

OMG! Ugly white stuff fell out of the sky this morning! Samples have been sent away to the U.S. for analysis. The city of Victoria is in chaos, there is panic in the streets. Send supplies now. Cases of Scotch, Brandy, Rum etc, oh yeah, I guess a loaf of bread wouldn't hurt. Send them all to me and I will dri...er...distribute them to the needy. Wait a minute, the sun is out, the white stuff is gone, all is OK, but send the supplies just in case.
  22. Got hippies...we do. The south end of Saltspring is inhabited by hippies. You can tell by the tie dyed tee shirts, sandals, long hair, beaded head bands, strong odor of ganja and patchtoulie oil in their yurts and tepees. The era just never went away.
  23. Drivers are aware of bicyclists and pedestrians because there are large campaigns directed at motorists to be aware of them. There are no such campaigns regarding motorcyclists. Consequently they are unaware of them. We must make the government and insurance agency's that it is far cheaper to pay for awareness campaigns than to pay out huge health or death benefit claims.
  24. Hate that chip seal even worse than tar snakes. Scary story. Long ago I was riding on a beautiful summer day. No traffic in sight so I wound up my Yamaha 400 to about 90 mph. It was great until I crested the hill and found the road crew working on the steep downside. They had neglected to post any warning signs. I hit the slope at 90 which was covered with fresh tar snakes that they were just covering with loose sand. Pucker time! I did not dare touch the brakes or twitch the handle bars. I went through at full speed. Since the crew all knew me and they had not put out warning signs nothing was said on either side. I am sure you all have just as scary stories involving road work. One thing I was impressed with was when we went to Wyoming. Through the North Cascades they were working on the road. There were warning signs just for motorcyclists. We never see that up here.
  25. There is another British ad that is just great. A biker pulls out in front of a car, the car t-bones the bike, the bike is unharmed but the car is totaled and both passengers injured. The biker is explaining to the cops that he "didn't see the car" " It just came out of nowhere". I think there is another one with the biker turning left and hitting the car head on with the same result, and excuses.
