When we went to Nelson my wife drove her van and I rode the bike. With her bad back she simply can not ride that much. On the way back she stopped in the Okanagan and picked up boxes of fresh fruit. Win/Win. I saw a neat trailer/camper on Used Victoria that looked interesting. Holds two harleys and has a kitchen, bathroom and queen sized bed. Used once. $ 18,000.00.

Tar snakes are dangerous winter or summer. I have seen the crew here putting sand on top of the snake while it is hot. Problem is the sand only seems to last until a few cars have gone over it. When it is hot the sand disappears into the tar. On the deck of the ships we used walnut shell mixed into the paint to make a non skid deck. Doubt that would hold up to traffic though. I have even had cars and trucks slide on those things. Warning signs in particularly bad areas might help.

We were there one year. It's quite the scene. Would not mind going again sometime.

I got mine at the farm down the road. Saltspring is noted for its lamb. It is very good ( we supply the Queen of England) and different from any you get elsewhere but does lead to some ribbing. 1) Why do Saltspring sheep farmers wear rubber boots? 2) Why do Saltspring sheep farmers wear velcro chaps? 3) Why do Saltspring sheep farmers take their sheep up to cliff tops? 1) Well, you stick their hind feet into the boots and they can't run away. 2) The sheep stick to them. 3) At the edge of the cliff the sheep push back.

It took a while to get used to the heel/toe shifter but now I prefer it. I had to keep repeating to myself "hoe down/high heels" toe down/heel up.

I have highway pegs on mine. I like them because it lets me change leg positions and on hot days gets my feet away from the engine and out in the breeze. Rev it up and go!

17th confirmed bird strike of the year
Sailor replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Perhaps those birds have been watching Alfred Hitchcocks "The Birds". You have just got to quit wearing that birdseed underwear. Over 30 years biking and never been hit by a bird. Lots of cigarette butts and bugs, even a deer, in my driveway even. The worst was a huge moth which hit my full face dead center. I was going about 50 mph on a winding road and suddenly all I could see was green slime. -
Don't really have a name for it but sometimes I call it "The Beast" because it is big, heavy and a beast to handle in the parking lot but also because out on the road it is big and bad.

Remember the Rocky Horror Picture Show? Years ago a friend of mine rolled his bike into the theater. When the scene with Meatball came on he fired up his bike and rode it, naked, across the stage in front of the screen. It added a little something extra to the show.

OK Rick, now I know who to call. I am not computer literate. We went on vacation and had my wife's sister stay here while we were gone. The computer was working fine when we left. When we got back there was a note on it to say it was broken. Did I mention that my wife's sister thinks she knows a lot more about everything than she actually does? I called teck assistance and we spent an hour going through the blue screen of death and into the black screen of death. The teck assistance had to put me on hold 4 times to get more assistance. They kept repeating that they had never seen anything like this. I got it partially back before they admitted defeat. I got a friend who is a teckie in and he went at it. It took a while but he got 95% of it back. There are a few minor glitches in it but they don't mater. No one can figure out what she did. The next time we left and she stayed here I hid the computer. It is a laptop so it was easy. She is forbidden ever to touch our computer on pain of something so hideous I haven't even thought of it yet.

Probably better that way.

For more info Google Destination Highways British Columbia. Even if you don't have the rally there I think some of you will want to visit sometime.

British Columbia is mostly vertical which leads to great riding roads. Nelson is a great, bike friendly, town. When we were there I talked to the manager of the hotel. There were about 4000 Hardly Davidson riders at Toad Rock campsite, just outside Nelson. They were expecting the Triumph riders the next week and the Ferrari owners club the week after. There are several loop rides out of Nelson. At the top of one pass we were passing snow patches in 100 degree weather. The guys there would need help organizing something this big but it would be worth it. The roads there are rated as among the best for riding in North America.

2nd Gen Shifting Problem
Sailor replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yup, what he said. If you are stopped the bike does not want to shift. Try rocking it , that seems to help. -
First time is always the toughest. It will grow. I enjoyed Leavenworth when we went through there last fall and would like to return.

Good for you. As a cancer survivor I ride in the "Do it for Dad" cancer ride each year. Thank goodness for early detection and expert medical help. I would not have survived long enough to make the first ride in Victoria and now I am looking forward to my third ride.

Engine cutting out
Sailor replied to screamstone's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The fuel gauge on my bike never worked properly. I have just gotten used to the idea that when it shows 1/4 full I am about to run out and hit the next gas station. When I tank up it shows empty for a few miles then comes up to full. -
40 front, 45 rear.

Blinked because just then the ghost appeared.

Thanks guys! my son is back on-line now so I will inform him of what you found out.

For a long time the bikers here have been pushing for a graduated licensing system like they have in Europe. This is so some 16 year old kid can't just buy a Ninja 1000 and hit the road. I agree with this and I agree with the restrictions on carrying passengers etc. BUT it is a big co-incidence that just when the provincial budget goes 2 billion dollars into the crapper they suddenly get orders to run the plates on every bike and start charging people with offences that are 30 years out of date. This is a cash grab just like they pulled back benefits for the elderly, which they, the elderly, had spent 40 years paying for, closing facilities and tossing the mentally and physically handicapped out on the street. Passing laws which allowed them to roll back nurses wages by 15%. Cutting off funding to charitable groups. Selling off water rights to foreign interests, which is going to quadruple our costs. The problem is that this government is run by big business and the media is big business so there is no way to get information out to the public. Sorry to sound so political but this attack on bikers is just that. OK...rant finished.

Good one Brian. The Harley guys with their loud pipes kept scaring the horses so they traded them in. The " Mounts" are now Crown Victoria's for the marked cars and Dodge Magnums, Dakota 4x4s and Chargers for the unmarked ones. Honda's and BMW's for the bikes.

Thanks for the info Rick. Where did you find it? I will contact him tonight. I think it is discrimination that bikers have been targeted like this. Of course, with the Provincial deficit going from $ 490 million in May, pre-election, to over $ 2.1 billion in August, post election, for this year and another $ 1 billion next year the government is looking to squeeze everyone they can.

My son got pulled over by the R.C.M.P. while riding with his girlfriend in Sidney. The cop informed him that he had done nothing wrong but that they had orders to run the plate of every motorcycle they see. A couple years ago my son got a dui while driving his truck. He paid the fine and took the suspension and got his drivers license back. What they did not tell him is that because he got a suspension his motorcycle license was automatically invalidated and he would have to re-take the tests. He did not know this so had been driving for a year and a half without a valid motorcycle license. The cop then informed him that despite paying for insurance the insurance was invalid because the license was invalid. The cop then informed him that when he had originally passed his motorcycle license 30 years ago he had passed it on a 195 cc twin star so it has been illegal for him to carry a passenger for the past 30 years. In order to carry a passenger he would have had to re-pass the test on a bike bigger than 200 cc. They did not tell him this at the time so he never did. The bike was impounded and towed. Invalid motorcycle license, invalid insurance, illegally carrying a passenger. He was told he could not get the bike out of impound until he re-passed his motorcycle test. He took a day off work to do all this and was informed the first slot available to do the test is in the middle of October. Impound fees $ 25.00/day plus towing fee plus licence test fee. Fortunately he found out that he could get a temporary operators permit which would allow him to get the bike out of impound. When he went to get it out of impound he found that the paperwork to impound the bike had never been processed so he could not take it out of impound. It took all day and several hundred dollars but he finally got the bike back. Be aware that in B.C. if you get a suspension it automatically invalidates your motorcycle license even if the bike was not involved and you must re-take the tests. If you originally passed the tests on a bike of less than 200 cc you must re-pass the tests on a bigger bike to be allowed to carry passengers. The cops have orders to run the plate of every motorcycle they see. Seems like harassment to me.

Beware the renters! I used to rent out my cabin. The renters finally destroyed it. My friend bought a 4 plex as an investment. One renter nearly destroyed the whole building. He had to take out 47 bags of garbage and re do-the floors and drywall. They owed him rent for nearly a year. There was a story in the local paper recently about a woman who rented a house and collected 97 cats. It took months to get her out and the house had to be destroyed. Unfortunately these people are the ones who know all the laws and regulations. I finally got my last renter out because she had destroyed it to the point it was dangerous and had to be pulled down. Check out the laws regarding discrimination. Some people will sue you if you do not rent to them, even if they are whacked out druggies on welfare. I have a friend who used to manage rental houses. He got out of the business because he could not stand the hassles.
