  1. Back in lovely Wainwright? You have my sympathies. I was born just down the road in Galahad Alberta, population 50 on Saturday night. That was the night they cleared off the back wall of the store and hung up a bed sheet to show a movie on. Board sidewalks and mud streets. A good friend of mine, Sam Bawlf, has a grandfather who started the town of Bawlf Alberta, again, not too far from Wainwright. Ask me about " Shane" when I see you at Nelson.
  2. Not saying this will work but....My son who, is a hard working aluminum welder, just got laid off. He was told he would be re-hired when things picked up. A friend of his called his ex-employer and pretended to be interested in hiring him. They asked about reliability, work ethic etc. Seems his now not ex employer managed to find some work for him after all.
  3. Keep on keepin on! Things will get better and you will be out on the road again.
  4. It is a balmy 48F here now. That could change next week. It is OK so long as you don't mind riding in the rain.
  5. My vote is dimmer switch. Had one that was the same. Turned out it was also drawing current when the car was off. Swaped it out and fixed the problem
  6. Right now "road pop" is the only one I can think of. That's beer. Usage sure does change. I have a book of old slang terms. At one time if you told a woman she had a nice pair of tits she would be pleased. If you told her she had a nice pair of trotters you would likely get slapped. tits=horses trotters= breasts Anyone else use "catch ya later" or "say what?"
  7. Yep, that health care in Canada sure is awful compared to the Private, For Profit, care in the USA. I went for a check up and was diagnosed with multi tumor very aggressive cancer. I was given 24 months to live. I was sent to a specialist in Duncan who started immediate treatment with injections and drugs and ran more tests. I was then sent to the cancer clinic in Victoria where I had radiation treatments 5 days a week for 7 weeks. I don't know what it all cost, medical paid for it all, and my transportation costs, and lunches because I had to travel from Saltspring to Victoria. They also paid for the ferry rides. It is awfully expensive though, it costs me about $120.00 per year for premiums. On the other hand, sometimes nurses can be a bit officious. I had acute appendicitis and had to book off work and get to the hospital in Saanich. My parents lived over there so I called for a ride from the ferry to the hospital, about 4 miles. I would have taken a cab but I had no cash. My father very reluctantly agreed to pick me up, seems I was interrupting their bridge game. He dropped me off in the parking lot and took off. I walked into admitting. I was the only one there. I told the nurse I needed to see a doctor. She told me to go sit down as there was an emergency on its way in. I sat for about ten minutes and was still the only one there. I went back up and said I really needed a doctor. She checked the waiting room and finally asked what my problem was. I said I was supposed to be operated on for appendicitis. She said " OHMIGAWD YOU'RE THE EMERGENCY" From then on things moved real fast. Now into year 4 and going strong.
  8. So you have a thick head, how's the car????
  9. Scrips Booth Auto Bi Go. Built in 1912. First V8 engine built in Detroit. Motorcycle with V8 engine, shaft drive, water cooled and carried 3 people. Compressed air start. 80mph top speed. weight 4000 lbs. Out riggers deployed at stops to keep it upright. Damn, that sounds familiar. Would scare the crap out of any hardly driver or car driver.
  10. Yup! So that is why so many reporters and news casters non't know how to spell. Punctuation is another casualty. Vocabulary is on the decline. It drives me nuts that so many people in the media are so ignorant. Them dunno how to talk or enunciate, ennuncate, enate, or nutton. The kids cummin outta skool dunt even kno how to rite a aplicaton for a job. Techurs just pas kids to git them outta ther class. OK, I know that is harsh but it is all too true. It was true when I was in school 50 years ago and it is even more true now. How are we going to help these kids? They need skills to get jobs, they need education to understand what is going on. They need world wide education to understand how everything in the world affects them.
  11. I have had a lot of problems with motorcycle batteries, Usually lasting just 5 or 6 months. I got one battery that had the terminals reversed. That was exciting. I buy the best I can and hope for the best. My truck and car batteries last about 5 years but again I pay for good ones. I love all these greenies who advocate electric cars, just wait until they have to pay for 27 batteries!
  12. Working on steel decks with extreme heat and cold and vibration and with the regulation that anything I wore had to be steel toed and a boot, no sneakers, I got a lightweight boot one size too large, traction sole and then put the best insoles I could get into them. Summer I wore light socks and in winter I wore heavy ones. FYI, Alpaca socks are the ultimate in warmth and comfort. Socks made from Alpaca wool.
  13. The ban on cell phones is a good start but studies have shown that hands free is just as dangerous if not more so. Enforcement is weak and drivers know it.
  14. A year or two ago I saw an article on the fastest pickup truck in the world. It was a Dodge 1500 with a 6 cyl diesel. It went over 200 mph. They figured there was a lot more power available. I think diesels are just beginning to come into their own.
  15. The guy who wrote the manual had a company lawyer looking over his shoulder.
  16. Yeah but your roads are boring. By the way, when is hurricane season? Still waiting for the first snow here. Usually don't get any until January and it usually only lasts a few days. I hear they got some in Vancouver today. Getting closer.
  17. The wind can do very strange things. During one race I was in my boat under reduced sail beating upwind against 3ft waves while a boat 40ft away was totally becalmed with the sails flapping and not a ripple on the water. Several times I have been on the bow of the ship as we glide down a narrow channel without a ripple on the water and there would suddenly be a splash and a hole in the water as if someone had dropped a bowling ball into the water. It was just a brief blast of wind in that spot. I have sailed out of harbour under spinnaker with the wind dead astern and passed a boat sailing into harbour under spinnaker with the wind dead astern of him. We were a boat length apart. I watched smoke rise from the farmhouse across the lake one calm morning. It rose up then made an abrupt 90 degree turn to my right and formed a corkscrew pattern for about 60 feet then reversed direction and went straight through the corkscrew without disturbing it. A funny one was when I got a late start in one race and was sailing up the channel under spinnaker. About 10 boats were becalmed ahead of me. I had my radio on and was listening to blues. Just as I got to the other boats the music switched to gospel. I sailed right through the whole group. They never got a breath. They were all asking what station I was listening to, they wanted to tune in to the gospel. Ya never know, it might have helped.
  18. Micro cars are nothing new. A cousin has one of those on his farm. Scrips-Booth built cars with motorcycle engines back in the early 1900's. Morgan cars got their start building three wheelers with motorcycle engines.
  19. You just can't beat the government, any government, for idiocy. Our government rushed to sign into law that there would be no more incandescent light bulbs, they would all be fluorescent. They have just realized, too late, that fluorescent bulbs contain mercury which is poisonous. Soon our land fills will be filled with mercury.
  20. Dogs are a lot tougher than you think. You probably did not harm it too much. Dogs use their neck muscles to rip and tear and so they are very strong. Probably all you did was make it think twice about chasing another bike. Some time ago I ran over our neighbors dog with my pickup. The dog used to hide in the bushes and jump out at my truck, this time he caught it. He bounced off the side of the truck and went under the back wheel. I stopped and the dog took off. I went and talked to the neighbor and he took the dog to the vet. The vet said all the dog had was bruises. Stopped him from chasing the truck.
  21. For our southern friends. To convert our Celsius to your Fahrenheit just double the temp and add 32. This is not entirely accurate but gives you a good idea. E.G. 5 C = 5+5+32=42 F which just happens to be the temperature on my deck in the shade right now. To go the other way just subtract 32 and divide by 2. E.G. 42F-32=10 divided by 2 = 5C.
  22. Break pedals? I thought keeping the left turn signal on was all that was necessary.
  23. Things to think about Long ago cursing and beating a stick on the ground was called witchcraft.......now it is called golf. Eventually you will reach a point where you will stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. The older we get the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Some people try to turn back their "age odometers". Not me, I want people to know why I look the way I do. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. How old would you be if you did not know how old you are? When you are dissatisfied with your current age and want to go back to your youth, just think of algebra. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. One of the many things people don't tell you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable. Old age is when former classmates are so grey and wrinkled and bald that they don't recognize you.
  24. No snow up here....................................................................yet!
  25. As part of our marine firefighting training we have to put out large oil fires using just water. One exercise is a 20 foot tank about 4 feet deep filled with diesel oil. They fire it up and let the flames get up to about 60 feet then you go in and put it out with a fire hose using water. It can be done in seconds. The trick is not to use a stream of water as that pulls in more oxygen and makes the fire worse. Use a spray and aim over the surface. The heat turns the spray to steam and smothers the fire.
