  1. I have a homemade trailer hitch on my 86, which means I have to take the rear tire out the bottom. You don't need to remove all that stuff if you can lift the bike high enough, and I use a standard bike jack. Take the right muffler off, lift the bike just a little, remove the caliper, loosen the axel and pull it out. Now pull the tire to the right until it drops off the pumpkin, lift the bike the rest of the way, wiggle it past the pumpkin and then lean it and bring it out. It helps to have an extra set of hands but you can do it alone.
  2. They did, Jimbob; then they turned it into a Hardley WannaBe!
  3. You might PM Stardbog, I bet he's going and he lives in Chi Town.
  4. BBQ !!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_4_7.gif And of course http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_4_11.gif!
  5. The Brain Fart was to use the shiny foil to better reflect the light through the red lens, Dan!
  6. I had a great brain fart the other day! Some others may have already thought of and done this; Maybe even posted something about it that I read and forgot about. So it may not be a new idea. I have been having trouble with the tail light fuse on my 86 blowing. I put a new fuse in and unplugged the headlight fuse (so as not to drain the battery) and left the tail light on for ten minutes, then ten minutes with turn signals on. The brake and turn signals ore on a different circuit. During this time I removed the seat and wiggled/inspected wires, pulled the bulbs out and replaced them, wiggled everything. Fuse wouldn't blow! I finally found that the last time I did an oil change, I didn't secure the wires on the lights I put on the lower chin fairing and as I rode, the wind or bumps pushed the positive wire (which is tied to the front L running light, which in turn is on the tail circuit) into the header pipe and burned through it and shorted it. Just sitting there it was fime, but when I started moving it shorted! I love it when I find a definite electrical problem! OK, none of that was the brain fart, but if you're still with me, here it is: One of the things first genners are looking for is more light in back. As I had the tail light cover off I realized that the beveled edges around the base of the bulbs is painted silver but not real shiny. I got a piece of aluminum foil, cut it to fit, made the appropriate holes, put it on and pressed it into the ridges; then I pulled it back off, sprayed the dull side with adhesive and put it back in. I then used a soft parts brush to make sure it was well pressed in. It made a noticeable difference in the light output! Here are some pics but they don't really show the difference. Sorry, I can't seem to get them any larger!?! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/01.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/02.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/03.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/04.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/05.jpg
  7. I'm not sure about the channels that the Wingers use, but VentureRiders.org tend to use channel 29 on the CB.
  8. What tire did you buy, Todd? I can't use the Avon Venom on my 86 because it causes wobble at about 70mph. And that's a drag, because I use that tire on my Intruder and really love it. On the Venture, I ride Dunlop EIII on the rear and D404 on the front.
  9. I did an 8,000 mile trip last summer in 6 weeks (1 week in Winfield, Ks) and the longest day was 740 miles, with only about 200 of that on interstate. That day started at about 4:30am and ended at 8:30 or 9pm. I was using a bead seat and it was not all that uncomfortable of a day. My age? I hit the double nickel in January of this year. (Actually, I'm 18 with 37 years experience!)
  10. I thought the side burner was like a stove burner, for cookin' sauces, or corn, or soup, or som'pin. I did hear today that Weber has one that has a gas starter. I also saw an original Weber, one that was made out of an ocean buoy! That was cool!!!
  11. Yeah, well Greg, y'all are just weird when it comes to beer!!! The fridge in the RV that I used to have used propane or electric to cool it. Hey Don, once you get it going a little bit, try using an electric hair dryer on it. That's what I used to do back in the day and it's like turbo-charging the starter!
  12. I want one that would use the gas to start the charcoal. That would take care of the time issue. But that looks like the next best thing!
  13. Hey Dan, you know that won't work! We VentureRiders are EVERYWHERE!!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_11_6.gif http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/13/13_1_208.gif Congratulations Mike!!! Now just get your new sweetie on the back of the bike and let her meet a few of the ladies here (not the guys! ) and you'll have the best of all worlds!
  14. A friend of mine had access to a track hoe one day a few weeks ago and put a short trail in his back yard and the neighboring land. When I took the bike there to put it on the skid, I HAD to try it out and make sure I wasn't ripping eagleeye off! That's where the Ga Clay came from. After that ride, he almost didn't get it!!! Hey Steve, you almost didn't get the windshield either. That would have fit my Intruder really nicely! Glad I could help and that you're happy with it.
  15. How's this for a Speed Bump?!
  16. Hey Steve, here are some pics to wet your apatite! http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn2.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn4.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn5.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn6.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/tn7.jpg (Hey Don, why didn't these pics come up in the body?! And why are they so small)
  17. I dunno, I'd kinda like to be able to use my front brake with out the brake light. That way I could slow down quick on a tailgater and let 'em think I don't have brake lights. They might back off!
  18. What Jeff said! And dry out your desiccant!
  19. The Wing does match your toolbox nicely! Nice ride! You can ride with me anytime. C'mon down!
  20. Brad, when I got my 86, it had venoms on it and I was thrilled because I use them on my Intruder and love 'em. But I had braking/turn wobbles and high speed sweeper wobbles. My second set, I went to an E3 rear and 404 front (Dunflop still doesn't make an E3 front for us) and did the steering head bearings and front wheel bearings. Things greatly improved so I put Venoms back on and got the wandering at about 75mph. I have gone back to the Dunlops and the bike has settled down. I hate to say it but unless everything is perfect, the Venom is not the right tire for a first gen. I think that I still have some issues in the rear end, because pulling a trailer at speeds above 85 gets really interesting! It will start to whip the trailer. Tail wagging the dog kind of thing! Good luck, Bud! Glad to hear you're ridin' to work!
  21. Great to hear, hipshot! Hang in there, baby!
  22. Best Bang For The Buck?!! Ya gotta go with a 1st gen. They deliver and still look good! It's a no brainer if you're leaning towards a tourer.
  23. As I recall, YamaMama says to replace it every two years. I am the second owner of my '86 and I think the first time it was done was when I did it at 20 years! I cooked mine in the micro at 30 second intervals until it was a pretty blue.
  24. I'm wondering why you are riding around with a half a face?!?! Or is your helmet covering half your face? That is kinda scary!
  25. Happy A-Day to you and Janis, Terry! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_1_34.gif http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_1_33.gif http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/13/13_1_205.gif http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_1_67.gif
