New Idea for Air Filters
Seaking replied to dlhoulton's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Why do people climb mountains? Because... Why do people change stuff on their bikes? Because it looks cool (most times).. the pancake filters discussed here are more cosmetic change than anything else.. I have them also.. I'll ride with them locally, but swap out to the OEMs when I go on road trips.. Looks cool.. -
LED Headlamps/Passing Lamps
Seaking replied to DONATALIE's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You can still use them, they work.. but at the expense of audio on the system.. Hopefully SOON someone will make a proper set that doesn't static up the radios and sound system SOON.. -
LED Headlamps/Passing Lamps

The Greenboat ones SUCK CANAL WATER BassAckwards and their customer service as well.. Nuff said about them and their suck products.. Glad YOU were lucky enough to have gotten a reasonably good working set but mine were defective, non-working and stupid insane interference ridden lights.. (ask me what I really think of them... ) I have the HID on my bike and it's all the light you need to see the road, wow, excellent.. no complaints there with the product OR the customer service provided by Canadian Cruiser Customizing.. top notch.. highly recommended.. I wanted to get 'white coloured' lighting on my highway lights to increase the visual footprint towards oncoming traffic so to make the bike more readily noticeable and hopefully not part of a cager's hood ornament when they look up from the cell phone, lipstick or bagel.. I've been through most of the LED 4.5" lamps on the market and they all have that static.. Shame.. from what I can find on the web about this problem, it's just a matter of changing a few circuit pieces etc.. but it's a common problem plaguing the industry. I currently installed H7616 lamps, they still look quite yellow compared to the HID and LED Sunspots, but they are marginally 'whiter' then the typical lamps found on our bikes.. like I said, GLAD you found a set of lights that work on your bike.. but it ain't happening here.. I tested all those lights on other RSV bikes around here to see if it was just something about my own bike but the other bikes suffered the same problem. Cheers M8 -
Sounds like you replaced just about everything.. Just on the off chance, how old is the battery? If it's an older model, would you have a chance to borrow someone's newer batter and try that on your bike? Though this might not be the fix, it's one more cheap inexpensive troubleshooting attempt that won't cost you a lot.. best of luck.. let us know what you discovered.. Cheers

Common thread with my last two Yamaha shocks dying in such a short time was that they were Yamaha shocks that couldn't be rebuilt.. That's why I spent the extra coinage to get a shock that could be rebuilt locally..

LED Headlamps/Passing Lamps
Seaking replied to DONATALIE's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This has been covered already a few months ago.. The Custom Dynamic LED passing lamps, the ones for Harleys will work on the RSV with a simple connector change, and they are nice and insanely bright.. and EXPENSIVE.. but they work well if you have the HID and SunSpots front signal lights.. gives you that brilliant bright "WHITE" light look that catches cagers' attention.. I liked the look.. But you'll never hear your radios ever again.. These were TONS worse that Green Marine LED lamps.. and those were horrible for RF interference.. it's that bad. Even trying to listen to an MP3 player through your bike's speakers will be near impossible.. simply way too much interference. I tried it on my bike and my buddy's RSV and it's the same thing.. insanely loud interference.. So if you NEVER ever listen to the AM / FM or MP3 tunes through your bike's sound system, those lights are the cat's meow.. Save your coins, wait for something else to come down the pipe line that is properly designed and constructed for this purpose.. That's the way it rolls.. Sorry. I'm sending mine back.. -

Removed all my badges
Seaking replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I always debadge my bikes when I get them.. Yamaha doesn't pay me to advertise for them so off goes the badges.. the dealership was annoyed I took their dealership tags off as well lol.. I asked him for $500 a year for advertising fees.. he didn't think it was funny and suggested perhaps I would like my servicing done elsewhere.. He didn't like the phone call he got from Yamaha rep later on.. silly people Imagine how hard it would be to debadge a Harley?! Prolly one of the reasons I don't have one lol -

LED Signal light EQUALIZER quandry HELP
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
What is the part number of the slim line metric signal stabilizer that you're using, just so I know exactly which one you're refering to.. I'm going to reinstall mine and flash up the bike to see if that was the deciding factor (doesn't actually make any sense to me but I'm no electrical genius!).. Thanks!!- 23 replies

LED Signal light EQUALIZER quandry HELP
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have one of their electronic flasher units and it doesn't work either.. Not sure why or what but as someone mentioned, perhaps I need the engine running to make it work properly, or simply put in a lightbulb in the circuit to fake a load.. sigh.. Thanks to all for your suggestions..- 23 replies

Hi guys, hoping one of you savvy lads out there can help me out. I have installed some bright LED signal lights on the RSV, and being LED they will naturally blink rather fast.. To slow such lights, we typically install Load Equalizers.. No problem there.. The recommended ones from Custom Dynamics: Genesis Metric Load Equalizer 7.5 Ohm GEN-7.5-30 These are small blocks that have two purple and one black wires coming out of them.. And ideally you install one on each end of the bike for each set.. one of the purples to the GREEN and BROWN signal light wires and the black to ground.. Simple right? ergh I wish. I've temp installed one at the front under the fairing where the wires are very accessible, and the other in the bundle under the license plate.. Brown and green.. Though they will slow down the 4 way flashers.. they have NO effect on the signal lights.. I know I have the right wires because when I pull them apart the signals lights stop flashing... I then took the large bundle under the seat, to the left side, and plugged one of the equalizers into the green and brown wires there.. and now the 4 ways and signal lights flash fast.. I have the SAME load equalizers working on my VSTar, it works.. the SAME one won't work on the RSV.. I have 5 of these, and none of them work on the RSV but they will on the VStar.. Am I doing something wrong here as to what and where I'm plugging these in? I've seen other posts where people have the same same equalizers working on their bikes and mine won't work.. Any ideas, suggestions, advice? Am I plugging these in the wrong wires? Fast flashers don't bother me but you know how it is.. how many times before I growl at someone for them saying "Hey Mister, you know ya got a light out??" Thanks in advance for your assistance.. If you're using something else that works, let me know what it is and WHERE / HOW you plugged it in, please.. Cheers =) Bike is almost ready for the road.. that is when the ice melts..

Rear cylinders are dead
Seaking replied to bscrive's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Based on what I went through the other summer with my used 2006 Midnight Venture, I can lend you some information.. whether any of it will help, you'll have to apply it as it comes along.. (A) Fuel Filter clogged.. wouldn't feed fuel to the engine as the pump couldn't pull enough fuel through the filter without a lot of head pressure from a full tank of fuel.. Replaced fuel filter (B) Fuel pump started acting weird.. quit then run.. quit then run.. then died just after a diagnostic in the shop and they didn't recheck which resulted in over $2000 worth of parts to replace everything but the kitchen sink.. Took it to a different shop and within 30 minutes the problem was diagnosed as a bad pump and replaced by a show floor model's pump.. NICE people, State College PA.. Fuel pump died due to working too hard against a clogged fuel pump. The fuel pump is required for the front cylinders, while the rear ones can be gravity fed. No fuel to the rear cylinders? Sounds like no fuel getting to it. © After getting my valves done in TX last summer, the bike ran super fine until I got back up into Maine.. Backfiring off acceleration, COLD cylinder on start up.. the bike would start reasonably well and run OK on the highway but something was amiss.. COLD cylinder sucks.. not firing.. Luckily found a shop that did a quick check to see if the pilot valve was clogged on that cylinder and voila.. fixed.. just a chunk of something plugged it, depriving it of fuel at idle.. but the other jets would work fine at higher revs etc. There are little brass drain screws under each carb.. he pulled one of them off for the affected cylinder and it was dry.. a quick splash of fuel into it dislodged the particle and poof, the bike has been superb ever since. Trying to find someone in your area who can take the carbs off might be tricky to have a look at them.. but ideally, as others have suggested, sounds like either a stuck float or blocked jet.. Please DO let us know what you find out when you get it fixed.. Cheers M8 -
Rear cylinders are dead
Seaking replied to bscrive's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You might NOT have warranty in Canada but you DO have warranty in the USA! My bike is 2006 USA bike when I bought it used and managed to get a ton of warranty work done on it before it expired in several places in the USA.. Yep, call a shop across the border with your VIN for them to verify it and you're in.. You do NOT have to be the original owner, the warranty is against the BIKE, not the owner.. Depending what you have wrong with the bike, taking a trip south might be worthwhile.. You stated you have spark to the rear cylinders but do you know if you're getting fuel? -
Confusing Electrical Problem
Seaking replied to GlennTuc's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had that similar problem after the bike sat outdoors away from home in a hurricane.. something got horribly wet and though the bike started and got me to the gas station to fuel up, it wouldn't start no matter what I tried.. however, a local bike tech told me to pull off my cables and put them back on 'tight' and hopefully that would be the fix.. and it was. Phew! Whether the rains had anything to do with but one of the cables on the battery loosened enough to cause the problem.. Hopefully the same will be your case. Cheers! -
Well I did my plugs and changed the fuel filter today, and tried the new location people mentioned in this thread.. and well it was easier than I thought.. I kept the sleeve around the new filter (pink!) and tossed the old filter (black!) out, I placed the filter where the photos showed it. The lower hose needs to be snaked and turned around a bit for proper routing that won't allow any accidental pinching or crushing from the other lines in there.. But it does reach from the pump up to the new location.. I haven't cut the inlet hose, but looped it large around and under the frame brace in case I wanted to return the filter to it's original position.. again, making sure no kinks or crushing will occur.. Impeding the flow of fuel is not a good thing.. Did you guys CUT the inlet hose to length? So now, its gonna be a lot easier to change that frikken filter!! As you can see from the photo, the filter needs to be changed more than just once a year, seeing how many miles I'm actually putting on the bike.. erk! Plugs are all the same colour, not sooty, little darker than light tan.. but look uniform.. Cheers

Billet Air Cleaner Covers

"Required" K&N filters with the chrome covers? how so? I'm guessing the filters are then now exposed or is it just 'the thing' to do? Looks great!! Polished looks better than chromed.. -
HUGELY so my friend!! I change mine every year as part of the winter maintenance.. Mind you, I put over 30,000 miles on my bike the past two summers.. Though it IS a pain in the assets to access, it will save you huge in the long run.. if it starts getting clogged, the fuel pump has to work that much harder to suck fuel through it, then causing the pump to fail prematurely.. which was the case for me.. I bought my bike used with 20,000 miles on it.. 2 yrs old.. no one had previously changed the filter.. I started having fuel starvation problems when the fuel in the tank got below a certain level (above the RES level).. the filter was clogged badly enough that it required the head pressure of a full tank to assist the pump in getting fuel.. after a lower level it couldn't cope and the bike starved of fuel.. A few months later, the fuel pump packed it in.. Change the filter.. they aren't expensive.. but hard to access.. Follow the thread how to get to it..

If I am not mistaken, its JUST a matter of putting the Emergency Kill Switch (red switch) back to the "run / on" position.. that's all... to close the circuit again.. simple as that.. Unless I am mistaken.. but something tells me I might not be.. regardless what my missus says.. I'm sometimes right.. not often but sometimes.. yes. I'll be doing my filter today (cold heavy rain warnings today.. then ice and snow..)

Choke Chrome Cover "Inexpensive"
Seaking replied to DanC's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'll attest to that! If you can get some 3M adhesive promoter to clean the area with, wow, that tape REALLY sticks hard and fast.. the chemicals make the tape even that more super sticky, etc.. I had never bothered using it before, thinking it was just like alcohol cleaner but it was explained to me what it actually was.. and wow.. You can find them in small envelop packets at some auto body shops etc.. -
I tried modifying a VStar bucket to fit into the RSV bucket system and gave up.. There IS a mod on this forum 'somewhere' that I stumbled across that involved prying back the flanges holding down the light inside the RSV bucket to get the new one in there but since I didn't have a spare to play with (not willing to risk my only light and then not being able to ride if I killed it..).. It is possible but it requires a lot of teeth pulling through the elephant's assets to make it work.. But dang.. nice lights.. Hmmmm

Excellent info, many thanks! And yes, by all means, drop me an email if you're coming up this way.. Nova Scotia is QUITE unique for riders in a lot of aspects.. quite the social thing here.. Apparently there are more riders per capita here in Nova Scotia than anywhere else in Canada.. And there is a biker event just about every weekend; poker run, weekend events, big to-dos.. Drop me a line and I'll see what's abouts.. and give you a bit of a local tour if you're up for it.. the sights are impressive within a day's worth of riding.. Cheers

Thanks Capt D.. we won't be able to make the Shuttle launches (shame their service life is coming to a close...) But looks like the Aug 8 launch is all we might be able to make it to.. I've been 10 feet behind and to the side from the exhaust end of a J-79 Afterburner jet engine at max burn in the past (from a CF-101 Voodoo).. the sound and vibration is what I might suspect a proper shuttle launch would sound and feel like from a mile or so away? lol.. egads I would hope so!! I gave the ol' mapquest a boo and see where Titusville is.. Now to find out where to go directly etc for the best vantage point.. Jacksonville is 2 hours to the north so there should be ample accommodations in August?
