Carb Synch with new gauges
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks all for the info.. After I'd seen Goose use his on the bike I picked up a set of gauges for myself and glad I did. Thanks for the tip to calibrate them against a known source, I wouldn't have thought it of that. I can't remember where I got mine from, can't find the receipt.. Cheers -
LED Highway lights Revisted and fixed
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That is a thought.. What light do you have, the ones that look like the PAR36 lights or the custom dynamic specific ones? -
A while back I was on about trying to get some form of 4.5" LED highway lights working on this bike, going through the fiasco of the rip off artists with their shyte bulbs, and finally on the Custom Dynamics. But no matter what was installed, horrible RF interference was heard through the bike's radio and audio system.. so much to make the sound system on the bike useless, thus making the LED lights unusable.. Well I'm happy to announce that I managed to sort it out and got the LED highway lights on the bike and without any radio interference at all.. (I don't use CB personally so can't say how it works on that, sorry) I was chatting with the nice people at http://www.customled.com about some other project and then posed the question to them if they could come up with a solution or if they made their own.. Though they said they might not be able to build another new light like this, they did come up with a probably fix to try out and wouldn't you know it.. it works! And simple.. I should have thought of it before.. but didn't.. grr Simple aluminum foil wrapped around the back of the light itself! that's all.. I thought it couldn't be THAT simple.. so I grabbed a couple sheets of aluminum foil and tested it out myself.. wow.. no kidding.. took the bike out for a ride, scanned up and down the channels and not a buzz from the lights. I rode wit the lights off until I heard a weak channel and then turned them on, expecting them to down out the weak channel but nothing.. the channel didn't drown out in a hiss or buzz.. wow.. YAY.. Working LED highway lights! Simple way to do it is to get two layers of a foil around the back of the light, and pinch it towards the front of the light (looks like a hershey kiss) so that you can mount it back into the light fixture. Obviously you'll have to make sure the electrical connectors aren't able to make contact with the metal or you'll have a short.. once the light is attached and done up, you can pull away at the a foil pinched out the front, trimming it with a knife of need be.. Simple as that.. However, to pretty it up I have some aluminum deck tape (used for aircraft firewall application) that should do the same job and make the mounting of the lights easier.. I just have a buckshee set up now for the testing. But it works! Now once I have the Moon Shinez signal lights to flash normally, bobs your uncle..

Hi folks.. I had picked up a new carb synch gauge, the four dials one.. And used it on the bike today.. I already have the carb tune with the rods that bounce up and down but the 4 dials gauge came at a super good price so why not. Wow, that was easy to set up and quicker to balance the carbs.. Maybe TOO easy? If I may pose a few questions to those who are experienced with this type of gauge. In regards to the little restrictors, how much do you close these off? They have to be open to a certain amount to let the vacuum do it's job, but too much and the needles bounce like crazy, too little and you wont get an accurate reading.. I did mine where the needles bounce between two indicator points.. to me this seemed like the best amount of bounce to go with? As you can see in the photo, the needles are bouncing pretty well spot on across the board.. When I started they were up and down a few notches but a few turns of the screw driver and everything balanced in nicely. I don't know why I feel this was much easier than the Carb Tune? Did I get this right for the amount of restriction to put on the valves? Cheers

Question about the RSV Horn
Seaking replied to dmoff1698's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have my stebel from way back in 2006 mounted under the fairing, and left the oem horn in place.. the stebel IS loud, ouch.. and does get a cager's attention when you want to reach out and touch someone.. -
Cruise Control quick engage trick?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That would make sense... however my bike would be thinking I'm crashing every 30 seconds with the type of roads we have here lol.. -

I dunno about you but I ride mine a lot.. close to 90,000 miles on it thus far.. I bought it used in July 2008 with 20,000 on it.. and I put the rest of it on in mostly the last two summers.. I've seen some 2006 with 20,000 miles on it last summer.. wow, ride much?? How many yards do you put on your bike each summer? Mine was in rough shape when I got it, previous owner not having taken care of it properly.. he didn't like the bike at all.. but all it took was some TLC and up she goes.. running sweet. I'm a little picky where I like my bike to run properly.. How many miles on your 2006? -
Cruise Control quick engage trick?

you can imagine how hard it is to hold cruise control around here with such potholes. lol One day of riding and now a week of snow.. dang! -

Mine your trip off when I hit a big bump or pothole on the highway.. where there are many around here.. No idea why that is.. -
Cruise Control quick engage trick?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That makes sense about possibly being under powered at those speeds.. running into a head wind at the same time prolly didn't help.. when the snow melts I'll give it another try.. Thanks for the advice Lads.. -

.38's? Girls shot into your controls? -
You might want to look see if your cables are binding as well.. if you look on the left side of the engine, under the tank, you'll see the cables going into a round gizmo.. a local dealer pinched the cables on my bike once and took a while to sort it out.. the surging.. check see where you are in rpm and speed if possible.. it could be just underpowered at that point.. I couldn't get mine to stay on today.. not sure why, I wasn't overly concerned about it right now.. but will have to dig into it soon..

Cruise Control quick engage trick?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Right! Thanks for the memory jog lol.. I tried it several ways but not that one.. I thought it was a double tap on the same something Cheers M8 -
Had the bike out today, tried to engage cruise control.. and remembered that there was a quick trick to getting the cruise to stick to the desired speed, without waiting for the system to catch up (lagging).. but erhmm can't remember what it was.. double tap the set button? Double tap the Accel button? Regardless, the shake down cruise went well.. lots of mods and adjustments made to the bike this past winter and the bike performs well, almost like a different bike. But I couldn't get the cruise control to engage properly or stay on.. 3000 rpm at 60 mph in 5th.. with heavy winds.. wondering if that had anything to do with it.. Does anyone remember what that quick set trick was on cruise control? Cheers

Where to buy shock?
Seaking replied to kartattack's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Wow, IMPRESSED with the new shock! Today was first day out on the bike now that winter paused long enough to get out there.. Combined with the progressive springs in the front and the new rear shock and tightened neck bearings and swing arm, this bike is tight and smooth.. The ride is best described as firm, borderline stiff, which is where I like it.. when I hit a hard hole, you'll know it but the bike doesn't try to toss you out of the seat.. When rounding a corner with dips and heaves, it doesn't try to throw you into the other lane.. Money well spent.. -
Where to buy shock?
Seaking replied to kartattack's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Best thing to do is contact the guy directly and inquire everything you need to know.. they were super great in helping me with the initial set up of the shock.. They set the spring and rebound as best they can from the info you give them (your weight, one up or two up etc).. Once you get the shock, you install it and then fine adjust it based on sag weight while sitting on the bike.. (something like that, I did mine in Dec during a blizzard.. I had the bike out today and WOW... though just a short jaunt to burn the cob webs off the bike, the ride was smooth and sweet.. wow.. Tomorrow, if the weather cooperates, I'll be taking it out for a run on the highway in 40'F weather to see how she handles.. Instead of spending the money on another Yamaha shock that might fail, best to get a Works shock that will work better.. and can be serviced should it wear out. -
Dang them ovals have deep sound.. love the sound coming off the throttle.. lol.. However, while doing my own sound videos with my rineharts, I found that the sound on the video differs a lot on how the video is produced, the environment, acoustics, microphone and video rendering itself will change how the pipes will sound on the sampler video.. None the less.. dang them ovals sound great
-
Hi Keith, the pipes you have on the bike should NOT affect the warranty.. I had HD pipes on my RSV when I was in the USA and required a lot of warranty work (my bike is a USA bike and lucky it broke down over there so warranty covered the fixes..) I think that ALL the bikes will surge the cruise control around the +- 5 mph and that has a lot to do more with the riding conditions than anything else.. where you are on the power curve, hills, winds etc.. Shame on them for charging you like that.. I just purchased another set of new Road King slip ons to replace the other pair that got dropped from the shelf and 'badly dented' on their way down.. crap! Not bad though, $60 plus $40 shipping from USA to Canada works for me! Long haul road trips are nicer with a less than booming thunderous roar that the rineharts can put out..
-
Yep the rineharts are for HDs but anything that will fit a Road King will fit onto your RSV with the adapter mounting plates and P-Clamps.. I like the sound of them.. Took the bike out today for the first post winter run.. brr.. but man.. loved the sound.. nice bark hehe My neighbors are prolly saying "oh no.. summer is soon here "
-
I took the stock ones off, put on a pair of nice RK pipes.. nice grumble but low enough you can hear the radio and not overly loud.. Then put a pair of Larossa turndown pipes and what? I can't hear you, what?? So freaking loud but impressive pipes.. wow.. Now running with a pair of black rineharts.. For me this has the BEST mix of not too loud and not too quiet.. noticeably different sound when a v4 roars through them.. However, when I go on LONG road trips, I'll be putting on the RK pipes as the constant loudness will tire you more by the end of the day.. What was funny last summer while traveling in the USA is a Harley rider pulling up next to me while at a light, I'm thumping the throttle, styling to the sound of the popes and he shouts out to me.. "Yeah, now THAT is how a Harley should sound like, YEAH!".. you should have seen the look on his face when I said "You're right, Harleys SHOULD sound like this.. it's a YAMAHA.." LOLOL.. Gosh, I like traveling to the USA.. =)

Need new Rear Tire
Seaking replied to Bert Buckley's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yep.. no joke.. I went back and checked my maintenance logs and it's actually more like 34,000 miles on the rear tire.. Keep in mind it was rather bare by the time I got to Texas and got it changed.. and still on the same tire.. Most likely replacing it this summer with another E3 I keep my front at 39 psi and the rear tire around 41 psi.. this works best for my needs.. I good handling and longer life out of the tire.. and I check my pressure quite often.. the bulk of my road miles are on the slabs (highway).. I don't know if this helps with the longer life or not.. I was also able to get superb mileage out of my ME880's on the VStar.. lots of riding, always in the 30,000 to 40,000 range..- 23 replies

I had that with my 2006 as well... I ended up servicing the forks and installed Progressive SPrings, changing a dead rear shock with a Werks shock and redoing the swing arm.. The bike now cuts a mean line through turns and curves without any wobbly wobbles..

Need new Rear Tire
Seaking replied to Bert Buckley's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm doing the BRP in May The last set of E3s on the RSV lasted me a long time.. can't remember exactly but the current rear tire has over 28,000 MILES on it The front tire even more.. Both tires show a lot of tread left.. Thinking out loud.. I put 65,000 miles on the bike since mid-2008 when I bought it used. So I'm guessing the previous rear tires has close to 35,000 - 40,000 miles on it when Goose showed me how to change tires by hand last summer.. and it was erhm.. bald. Keep the proper tire pressures and these baybees will last a long time..- 23 replies

An interesting problem which could have been easily solved with a velcro strap tied around the handle bar.. When you came to a stop, you wrap it around the brake level and cinch it up so that your front brake is on when you disembark.. Simple solution to a simple problem.. Basically the same thing you need to do if you park your bike on a ferry to keep it from rolling around on deck.. Did you find the auto clutch set up hard to get used to when pulling away from a stop though?

*I* always wear my helmet.. ugh would hate to think I ended up a veggie for the lack of head protection.. My buddy though, he'll take his off when we ride into various US states that don't require helmets by law.. But I make him recite a DNR state on video before we ride on.. I was hoping it would scare him into wearing one.. but nope..
