Where best to install Load Equalizers
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
No, these load equalizers make the LED look like they take a full load thus fooling your self canceling and signal light relay into thinking they are real incandescent lights.. In simple terms that works for me to understand this is that if you take one of your bulbs out of the sockets, that side of the bike will flash FAST.. it's a troubleshooting thing built in to tell you that one of your bulbs are out.. same thing in a car.. So when you put an LED light in there, it doesn't draw enough electrical power like a regular bulb does and the system thinks its a blown out bulb and flashes fast.. Installing Load Equalizers adds resistance to the circuit so that the system thinks there is a good bulb in the socket and will operate properly.. Different companies make different type of equalizers and diodes. Some go inline with each positive wire of the signal light, while others replace the relay completely.. The ones *I* have simply clip to ground, and then to each signal light wire, front or rear circuit. Because they take up the load they tend to get warm so you mount them accordingly. You could I guess mount them so they tap into the right and left side as it does the same thing.. but it's a heck of a lot easier just tapping into the leads of the wires near a junction point where the left and right REAR or front signal lights come together in the centre of the bike.. So now, I'm just looking to see where this spot might be on the bike to save me some hunting and yanking on wires.. if someone had done this one before then their info would save me some time.. the bike is at the shop for the week getting the front end re-done so I have to gather up parts and do some research =)- 8 replies

RSV Front Lowering...HELP!!
Seaking replied to pickinfred's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ah understood.. kinda wondering is all... I'd been riding since a kid and have honestly never dropped a bike in 30-odd years... until I got this beast and she's gone down at least 6 times.. only once in traffic though.. the rest of the time when stopped and finding myself on the high side of things.. oops.. crump... Good thing those crash bars catch the bike nicely.. -
Here's what I have installed http://www.burnsmoto.com/usb-power-socket-weatherproof.php I did the glove box mod which someone posted earlier so I can now plug my iPhone into the USB jack inside the glove box and the phone will be recharged.. What works great for me in this set up is that I typically ride the main freeways and I can use the iPhone's 3G to log into my fav radio station at home and get reception.. piping it through the bike's audio system.. or the MP3s on the iPhone etc.. now I will have a fully charged iPhone when I arrive at destination at the end of the day or power up my helmet cams etc etc while traveling etc.. If you have a cig lighter socket adapter on your recharger, you can relocate the one from the lower left fairing to somewhere more accessible and use it that way.. I'm also adding another socket to the left side of the bike under the seat so that I can run a small emergency portable air pump for when we go on group rides etc.. best of luck

I've swapped out my signal lights to some decently insanely bright LEDs and have a pair of Load Equalizers to take up the load to make the signal lights flash at the normal rate etc etc.. One for the front and one for the rear lights.. However, though I know which wires go where, I do not know the best location to tap into the wires for this.. Can someone who has done this before be able to point out to me where best to located the wires on the bike to tap into for the best (note easiest) access? Thanks in advance. Cheers

RSV Front Lowering...HELP!!
Seaking replied to pickinfred's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yeah, lowering the REAR of the bike is the wrong thing to do.. you needed to raise it to get improved handling in slow mode.. the "leveling links" people rave about raise the rear of the bike to make it ride better.. So if you remove your rear lowering kit and return it to stock then lower your front you'll achieve the same thing but with a lowered bike that will handle much better.. I did two advanced rider courses with my 2006 Midnight but couldn't finish the course because for some ODD reason I keep burning out my clutch.. no joke.. I'm careful not to rev it too high on the clutch but it's a 900 lbs bike with a erhmm big boned lad on it.. it's hard on the clutch... But I'll tell ya.. the course was WORTH a clutch rebuilt for what I learned and got confident on techniques and such.. Let me know if your bike survives the course.. it should be the same course we run out here in NS -
Any thoughts on the FUEL FILTER? I change mine once a year on spec.. pain in the buttocks to get at but worth the peace of mind.. inexpensive filter that can save you a lot of problems...

I have the vent on my Clearview Tall&Wide windscreen to be honest I really can't see or feel any differences when it's open or closed.. Just me I guess..
-
The Clearview does take RainX but it's acrylic.. the F4 is polycarbonate (?) which is shatter resistant.. Seeing how many bird strikes I take a year.. this might be a wise purchase..

I was going to say not to forget to rough up the plastic with 00 steel wool for the paint to adhere to better.. but they show their demo with 00 steel wool swiping the windshield to demonstrate their anti scratch abilities.. lol.. A little roughing at the bottom where you plan to paint will help the paint stick even better. I'm waiting for them to ship to Canada so I can order one..

NEW LED highway lights 8W each 120 Lumens
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Red Deer, nice! The only thing I could find were WAGNER sealed beams for mine.. though I think it's Custom Dynamics that have 4.5 inch LED replacements available.. at $100 or so bucks each.. steep but apparently those are the real deal.. but they aren't sealed beams.. I don't know if the lamps I have can be properly retro-fitted or if I need another genre of headlamp setup for them.. -

Chris, don't bother purchasing them.. they are discontinued for reasons of shoddy workmanship and product failure. Some of us Canucks purchased them, they failed and the company turned a deaf ear to our emails looking for replacement or refund.. Don't waste your money.. or time. This ain't just sour grapes, it's just sad. Other companies out there make proper LED lights but they are not the sealed beam style, and they are more expensive.. but at least they work and don't ship out busted.. -
Can you elaborate a little more on what you used as the box and liner etc for this mod? I'm picking up electrical parts to complete this mod as I can now charge batteries for my cameras and helmet cams and smartphones (IT geek that needs to be connected all the time sigh) Thanks M8

Must be a "Canadian" thing then.. the yanks seem to be getting happy services but we don't? Shame.. Oh well.. lessons learned whom to never deal with again.. Luckily there are others who know how to conduct themselves properly in the MC biz world. (rant annoyance mode off for now) -

Well that's TWO companies to black ball black list and trash talk.. geesus, where is the pride of ownership and responsibility to customer service these days? They should be embarrassed as hell after that ram shod performance.. I lost out, now someone else has lost out.. Thanks! -
Wow, thanks for THAT link!! coupla items there worth the while
-
Yep actually a very simple setup.. you could actually re-route the one from the lower left fairing up to that hole.. You've given me a good idea for that empty space.. THANKS!

I think you should be able to find such old technology for sale 'somewhere'.. heck you can still find Harleys for sale, old technology.. (relax, it's a joke.. on them

they crashed their bikes trying to change a cassette back in 1999.. the rest of us learned from their mistakes.. you? Just kidding.. does anyone actually use cassettes these days?
-
The "cassette player"... at least it's not something you'll MISS.. They might as well have put an 8 Track Cassette player on this bike.. it would have been more 'retro cool' than a silly 'cassette player' lol.. how oh so passe.. Hopefully this is your fix.. however, wondering what is pulling power on the unit though? My bike came without out it as the previous owner ripped it out..

Greasing Swing Arm bearings?
Seaking replied to Sleeperhawk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OH.. LOL.. well tell ya WHAT, if someone wants to do this task for me, I'll get ya some hum dinger photos with your OWN bike I know models all over this continent, it wouldn't be too hard to set up next time I come to visit your town hehe.. I just had a look at what was involved in doing this job.. "ouch" is the word.. My 2006 has around 80,000 miles on it.. I bought it from a gent who bought it from another gent who neither prolly did any service to the bike.. so I'm guessing this bearing isn't looking too pretty.. Just like the neck bearings, if I'm going through all this trouble of removing everything so I can 'repack' old bearings, I might as well put brand new ones in!! can the swing arm be checked with the wheel on the bike or does it have to come off? I have to keep the bike in rolling condition for now so it can be taken to a shop to have the neck bearings 'redone'.. -

Greasing Swing Arm bearings?
Seaking replied to Sleeperhawk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yeah Same here.. I have the bike up on jacks still after doing the rear shock install.. Never thought of doing the swing arm.. "dang".. now would be the time to do it. huh? C'mon, fess up guys.. what's the process for us newbies who never done it before.. we promise not to pester too much more after that.. -
Yeah I noticed that remote adjuster as well.. I have a Progressive Spring on my VStar and I recall busting my knuckles a couple of time till I figured it out too.. I think getting that spanner tool on the shock while installed is near to impossible.. dang Hopefully the preset is good enough to go without having to monkey around with it..

08 RSV clutch question
Seaking replied to BigBear's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I bought one of those minivacs to evacuate the fluids out of the reservoirs and replenish with fresh fluids at 'least' once a year.. I do the clutch twice a year, dependent on conditions and loads I put on the clutch etc.. One thing I did come to realize though is to NOT store DOT4 brake fluid on the shelf once you've opened it, unless you're going to be using it within a few months again.. So when I do my bike's brakes, I call my buddies up and offer to do their brake fluids just to get rid of the left overs.. a small container can go quite a ways depending on how you bleed the system. I also bought some speed bleeders for the RSV for the brakes and clutch, but am I right to assume to it's "not" a good idea to use a speed bleeder on the clutch system, and to preferably force the fluid UP from the bottom via turkey baster procedure? Cheers -
I had a quick look at their site and those shocks look ODDLY similar to the Works! shock I just installed on my RSV... but at a higher price.. Hmmm me wonders..?
