07 RSV Rear Shock Not Covered??? WTF ??
Seaking replied to StarRider07's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If they disbelieve you that a factory shock can die so quickly, kindly ask them to contact me, I'll be MORE than happy to let them know how shyte their shocks are as I had mine replaced before my 2006 warranty wore out and the dang thing busted out again JUST after the 1 year mark.. and I always ride solo.. Now I have a Works! shock and it works great! yeah.. raise hell and keep at them.. keep at it.. inferior products need NOT be tolerated.. no way.. -
Hi guys, one last attempt with a new load equalizer to slow my signal flash rate. In the rear of the bike I have normal LED cluster but in the front I have the Custom Dynamics Moon Shinez white signal lights which is most likely confusing the system from accepting the normal load equalizer practice of placement. I recently picked up the Custom Dynamics Street Magic Metric equalizer unit but after discussing it with another member, it would appear we have the same unit but there lies some confusion about the wires and seemingly different instructions for the same product. The instructions I have says to hook the RED wire (which has a fuse holder and battery connector lug) to the battery... The BLACK wire to a suitable ground and then the BROWN and the PURPLE each to the right and left rear signal wire. (They state the REAR signal wires and it's supposed to work to quell the speed on front and rear LED signal lights?) The other member has his connected to the signal flash relay located under the right side cover (the square looking black relay) and says his actually does work, slowing down the flash rate properly... but his instructions and unit have different colours. The relay connector plug has 5 wires to it laid out as such: BLACK YELLOW WHITE with white stripe BROWN BLANK BROWN with red stripe with white stripe In order to make this unit work, and attached to the wires on the connector, which wire does what on the connector? What's the best way to find the correct wires as per instructions? Either I've been working at this too long and now totally confused or I'm just too jittery to experiment and blow up the bike..! If you know for sure (no wild guesses, please), drop me a line and fill me in.. It's totally possible that the Shinez front signal lights are indeed impossible to make work with a load equalizer but I dunno.. These lights stay ON bright and when signalling, they simple switch off... then on, then off.. instead of the typical dim running lights blinking brighter.. perhaps these are impossible to slow down? Anyway.. late night, time for bed.. hopefully someone will have the solution.. Thanks in advance. Cheers

bike cutting out / missing at WOT

I used "automotive GOOP" to affix the foam blocks to the shields and never had a problem with them slipping off or being ingested.. -
Hagon vs Works Rear Shock

Probably the best method is as you described, removing the bags and rear wheel, but my experience has been that the less I remove from the bike, the less likely something else will break or be misaligned or pooched But that's just me..! -
Doesn't seem like I have much to lose then, seeing how it's a dead tach anyway... Good possibility its a dead wire.. Erhm I had a quick look at the tach and couldn't see a way to getting it open to check for a broken wire inside.. How does one open the darn thing? I re-wired the whole thing just in case but same results. Would love to have a peek inside the tach..

The usual questions will come up, as when were plugs last changed and gapped? When was fuel filter last changed? etc etc.. For my limited knowledge on this bike, my first perk would be "is it spark fouling at higher temps or could it be fuel issues at greater demands at that upper range?" Start with the simple stuff first, ya never know.. But the more savvy of the lads will prolly have a more tech answer for you that might be more problem specific.. -

Help Bleeding Front Brakes
Seaking replied to kkent66's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Say huh? Furthest from the reservoir would be the LEFT caliper, wouldn't it?? Opposite side of the bike? -
Thanks M8.. got a pic to show what it looks like? Saw their tachs on their site but not sure how best it would mount on our bikes.. I saw their replacement tach (guts) that sorta looks like what I have but I'd like to see the back end of it to see if it could be a bare mount setup.. certainly cheaper.. Cheers

So my Drag Specialties tach bit the dust on the last trip.. boo.. Right now, the dial light works.. when you turn the ignition to ON, the dial will calibrate as its supposed to (swing all the way to the right and then reset to 0).. but it won't read the RPM what so ever.. I just pulled the tank and checked my connections and everything is in order but still no go. The tach failed while riding where I noticed it bouncing a bit and then drop to zero.. then a few minutes later bounce up to what would seem to be the proper RPM and then back to zero where it's been ever since. The bike runs fine since then, not noticing any changes etc. So if this is a dead tach, and if I don't want to go with a 2.5 inch Drag Specialties tach again, what other options do I have that will work out of the box for this bike of ours? A smaller dial (2 inches) would suit me fine.. Though a dead tach is not a show stopper for me, I kind of like having one for various reasons.. (no, not OCD or anything.. Any recommendations?

Hagon vs Works Rear Shock
Seaking replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That looks a lot like the Works shock to be honest.. I replaced mine last winter and though it's NOT a difficult job what so ever, it does require some dicky-mousing around to get access to the top bolt.. a good lift helps as you have to take the weight off the wheel to get the bolts free etc.. I can't remember exactly what has to come off but my bags were already off when I did mine.. Thinking the right side cover comes off.. It will become readily apparent to you what needs to come off when you look at the hardware carefully... If I do recall, there is an article on here somewhere that will walk you through the whole process from start to finish with confidence.. -
Can someone confirm if the stock handle bars on the RSV is 1 inch outside diameter and 7/8" inside diameter? What's the length of the bar? (I can't find my flexible measuring stuff ergh!) Thanks in advance.

This is quite similar to what happened to me a couple of years ago on my 2006.. It would die and then would restart ok.. but it would quit at the odd time.. slow speeds, highway speeds.. and not often.. nothing you could sort out on the side of the road. Unfortunately it finally died while on a road trip. A bit of a story behind it though.. 1st dealer I took it to after restarting the bike, tested the fuel pump and couldn't find anything amiss with the bike.. Hmmm Ok So off we go from his parking lot but just as the bike was idling while I was dressing up, it shut down again and this time nothing would get it to start.. They pulled it back into the shop and did a bunch more tests and ended up changing just about everything on the bike, new coils, ignition module, filters, spark plugs etc etc.. never bothered looking at the pump again because hey, it worked the day before when they did their trouble shooting.. But after 5 days, we had to throw in the cards and take the bike to another dealer in another city.. bummer. But the tech there found the pump being dead after only 30 minutes of getting there and luckily enough, they took a new pump off a 2009 show floor model and put it in my bike.. and it's been super duper ever since. What the second tech told me was that the contacts on the pump were shot, burnt out etc.. when ever the bike had quit before, it could have been either heat or a bump that broke the contact and caused the pump to quit.. then when things cooled down, the contact would be made again and pump would work until that day at the first dealer when it finally died for good.. Had the pump failed completely, it would have been a quick find and a quick fix.. but because it was behaving the way it did, the pump led them on a wild goose chase.. Lucky for me that the bike was still under warranty (it being a US bike traveling in the USA) that I ended up with a lot of brand new parts at no cost.. The bike shop in State College PA were super stand up people and wow, super impressed that they would rob a pump from a show floor model instead of making me wait for a new one to be delivered.. Aces to them! And I attribute the pump failing prematurely like that due to a clogged fuel filter I had to deal with before. I believe the filter was so clogged it caused the pump to over work and lead to it's early failure later on.. over worked, over heated, died.. In YOUR case, the fuel filter should be changed every year anyway.. They should be able to look at the contact points on the fuel pump to see if there is any discrepancies there.. Not sure what a new pump is but they should be changing it under warranty.. but they need to see it fail in order to justify it's replacement.. that's the system unfortunately... Best of luck!

Ahh OK that would make sense.. 5 Gallons Imp vice 6 gallons US.. Good to know as my bike is actually a US bike with both MPH and KPH speedo but a Miles ODO.. Still, I wouldn't have wanted to push it any further.. these bikes aren't the easiest things to push around!! Here's the item one person asked about.. Tour Tank (and the Tour Tube) http://www.tourtank.com/TourTanks.html You could probably mount it onto the passenger HF bars on the rear seat and pipe it through..

Hi folks, we just got back from another road trip and on the second day out, found ourselves in one of those cliff hanger rides on the back roads, where your GPS says there is a gas station, but it's no longer there and the 'next' one is erhm beyond your range.. Tempting fate we continued on with few options on this long stretch of back roads.. By the time we got to a gas station, we were on fumes.. The F counter showed 23.7 Miles, and we pumped in 4.8 Gallons of fuel into the empty tanks.. that means we had what, .2 gallons left sloshing around? I had always been curious to know just how far I could go on reserve, and I just found out.. At least now I know.. To be honest, it actually gave me more confidence to ride the tank lower than I normally would... What if we had run out of fuel? Well the emergency plan was that since my bike burns slightly more fuel than my buddy, we would have pulled the hose off at the petcock and drained what ever I had left into an empty drink container and put that fuel into my buddy's bike and see how far he could go on it.. prolly a few more miles further and closer to a gas station etc.. and he would come back with some fuel to get me there as well.. (contingency plans abound....) What's the lowest you got your tank down to? T

Hagon vs Works Rear Shock
Seaking replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
the Works shock is adjustable for preload and rebound.. You have to measure the "sag" of the bike off the ground and with rider ON the bike and then turn the collar (tool included) to have the sag of a certain distance.. The rebound is set with the allen key at the bottom of the shock.. I had set mine early in the spring but after hitting a devastatingly big hole at highway speeds, had to reset everything again when I got home.. (and replace the front tire that had broken belts in it, unfortunately discovered after some many miles later. =( scary dangerous THAT was!!) Where abouts in Nova Scotia are you visiting? Drop me a line and perhaps we can show you around the fun areas here.. scenic and fun.. (We're leaving for a week tomorrow to do the Skyline...) Cheers -

Alternatives for passing lights
Seaking replied to PERM44's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I installed the "Sun Spots" from Custom Dynamics which really stand out with the HID light. Bright white light stands out and isn't outshined by the HID. And though on the expensive side of things, I found them well worth the while... The photos doesn't do them justice but it's a lot of bright white light coming at ya.. And they do toss some light onto the road ahead of you as well.. http://www.customdynamics.com/led_passing_lamps.htm -
Well that's ONE spot I didn't think of trying the various load equalizers on my bike.. What wires did you attach them to? Which wire does what ect? Thanks in advance.

carb synching and clutch help.
Seaking replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Its quite simple to do all those but I understand how you feel, if you've never seen it done before it looks quite daunting! But having the right tools makes a huge difference of course. Once you've seen it done, purchase one of the available types of synchronizing tools and you'll be set for the life of your bike.. Best of luck! -
Another rear shock ? with a twist
Seaking replied to Bill in NJ's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Progressive makes FRONT springs for our bikes, "awesome" but NOT rear shocks.. I wish they did, I have their shocks on my VStar and its awesome sweet.. One of the main reasons there aren't many shocks out there for the RSV is demand and supply.. the R&D and manufacturing costs need to be supported by sales, and though our bikes are fun bikes, there aren't enough of them on the road to be able to justify the costs to build a new shock for it.. (economics 101.. I missed that class but that's what I was told by someone who fell asleep in class..) Cheers -

K&N filters how often cleaning?
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Spent the day out on the bike and gone through a couple tanks of gas.. with the newly charged K&N.. couldn't honestly say fuel economy was improved nor performance.. I'm guessing they were reasonably clean before I recharged them.. I'd never seen oil come off those filters like it did last night, almost like fresh pink oil.. interesting. At least the peace of mind that it's taken care of.. Cheers
