Some what my thoughts exactly, but here's where I would go with it, go whole, why piece meal it. Back off idle screw so that #2 carb butterfly is seated, then turn in the idle screw so that it just,, repeat,, just starts to move the butterfly, now do the same for # 1 except you'll have to turn the sync screw instead, now do # 4 and then #3. Now start the bike and turn in the idle screw so it will idle at 900 rpm. Adjust #1 carb so that it balances with #2 constantly turning the idle screw to maintain the 900 rpm. Once you have # 1 done, do the same to #3 but this time balanced to #4 only, not #2, and keep the rpm @ 900. Everytime to finish a balance blip the throttle so that you are sure things are seated right. Now you balance #4 back to #2 constantly adjusting to keep rpm at 900. Don't worry about doing this at 2000 or 3000, the carb balance means very little when the butterflys are open that much. If you have it right at 900, it'll be close enough at 2000, and if you adjust at 2000, you will screw up your 900 setting.

Wow, now you've got it made. Maybe suggest to her that Ohio isn't that far away, or does she read maps.

Marca was asking about you this afternoon, and I was going to call to see how you were, then we decided maybe to ride over and see first hand, but then sometimers set in, and I did the couch thing as well. Sure glad you posted, Jopie, now I can go to bed more relaxed. God Bless, and looking forward to the 5th & 6th already. Carl

Glad to hear that you're ok,,,, bet it not ok that the scoot is done, but you're ok and healable, that's super. As to trailering comments, if mine should ever start to sway, the throttle would be my friend, just pour on some fuel and get it straightened out then slow down. Doesn't help a whols lot with a flat tire, but will get you out of some other issues. Gos's Speed and ride save. Carl

'83 Venture Issue.
Marcarl replied to NLAlston's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Better than that, take off the leftside side cover, you'll find a square piece of rubber with a bump on it just right on top of the engine covers, lift that up and you'll find it tied to the bleeder screw for the clutch. You may get away with just bleeding the clutch, but in my experience it's only a stop gap solution, you will probably have to clean out the slave cylinder to get it done right. Try the bleeding and reload the manual file. If all that doesn't help, we can and will. Carl -
Just above the carbs on the left hand side, there is a cable coming from the top, it's the throttle pull cable, it has an adjuster on it, takes 2 10 mil wrenches, the maesurement from the last thread to the larger part of the adjuster (so the setting nut is not included) is .59 inches or 10 mil. Start by making sure that that is correct, then there is an adjuster at the top by the handle bar, you now adjust this one until you have 1\16 in play or so, or try to adjust so that things work well. Sometimes if you have worked on the handlebars, you may have twisted the cables and so they tie up on you. Take a look there and make sure that they are not binding up. Keep coming with your comments,, we'll get it fixed somehow. Something is going to show up,,, it just has to,, there is no other way.

I don't quite understand this, but if I got it right you sync'd at 2000 rpm? You need to do it at 900 rpm.
-
Could be that your fuses are loosing contact. Check to make sure that you have power going THROUGH them. not just to them.
-
Have you done a carb sync yet? don't go by the throttle plates and just looking at them. I would say that you have one carb, a way out of sync.
-
Try doing a good carb sync, often that will clear the problem you speak of. I'm not saying not to grease the cables, they do need it periodically, but it sounds to me like carb sync time.

On Wayne's scoot we tested the stator and regulator according to instructions. One thing we missed and that was to check the the three white wires to ground when the engine was hot, I mean running it for at least 20 min to half hour. It was then that the stator showed a grounding out issue. Something to keep in mind maybe. Just to confirm my suspicions, I just went out and tested both stators. They are both cold, of course, not being in a bike, and both test fine for the ohms test, nothing going to ground. So do this test when the stator is hot. Oh, and both stators tested fine for the AC voltage output test, hot or cold.

Best thing to do is inform her how much that is going to cost,,, and then suggest that a training session or two or three might help repay all the hurt you're feeling and the bike has taken. Professional training can be hard to come by, but if she wants I'll be obliged to help out.

Got up early this morning to beat the gremlins, warmed up the bike and when she was cold, she nicely gave me 14 volts, as she warmed the voltage dropped, did the AC volt test from wire to wire, unhooked, with the results being 48 to 50 volts on all counts. Shut the beast off, did a ground test and got continuity on all three wires to ground, battery to wire end. Now am replacing the stator, shouldn't take long, maybe have time to help out Bob today,,,sure wish he was closer. -
Good reason for a long extended ride. Diesel should run through with no real problems, just got to keep the engine hot, and running, and when your done with your test, change the oil and filter. It'll smoke a little while the test is on, and smell somewhat different, but other than that I would have run it through,,, just another reason for more riding. Now if you have a catalytic converter in your exhaust system, better deal with the diesel in another way, it'll plug the converter.

We may not have it all together,,,,,,,But together we have it all.

So what we're going to do now, is to solder all the wires, whites to whites and all the 5 colors to each other. We also elminated the ground connector close to the battery. Funny thing is, all works just fine, not great, we get about 13 volts on charging, until we plug the headlight into the circiut, and the fuse doesn't get warm, but that is when things start to go south, not real fast, but it looses a hundreth of a point on a steady basis. Anyways, we'll put it all together now and see what transpires. -

Didn't think there was any reason to bypass the black until we're sure that we have a good rectifier installed. I do like that idea though, thanks for the input. As far as the starter goes, we'll check that out once we get things a little more back together. but first I need to know if the test results that I did mean anything, or say anything, that's if somebody knows and\or you can make sense out of what I did. -
In order to get them to seat properly, stick your finger inside the carb and hold the slider out a little so that the diaphram can seat well. As you do this, you can install the cover and put in a screw or two. Also double check that you have the little o-ring installed that goes in near the bottom. Hope this Helps Carl

OK. so now I get to say something: I tested the 3 rectifiers we have here and they all test the same I used the red lead from the tester as the lead wire and the black as the return. I tested for ohms, or continuity The results: Red to white: nothing red to red: 0 White to red: 550 on all 6 tests Red to black: nothing Black to red: 850 on all 4 tests Black to white: 550 on all 6. Black to black and red to red are all dead shorts.
