  1. does this headset also work on an openface (3/4) helmet? I noticed on their site that they sell slightly different applications, and was wondering how different they really were. Rip
  2. I might be interested. Is there a simple way to connect my zumo to it? Rip
  3. I leave it up to police to police where people park. Unless it interferes with me, I would let it go. For myself, I'll park on a wide walk if it's convenient and out of the way, or on the cross stripes at the end of a parking row. I figure if I park in an out of the way place, it saves a regular parking space for someone else. Rip
  4. I just installed a Utopia yesterday--the mounting bracket had to be forced on, a very tight fit. And then the bolt went on extra hard--and I twisted the head off. grrr! Now I have to drill it out and get another bolt. It sure feels good on my back, though, and makes it much easier to back up. Rip
  5. thanks for the replies--glad to know I didn't order the wrong size. When the clamps are closed the inside measurement on each one is 15/16's. I'll have to look at the engine guard again to see if maybe I was trying to put it on where there was a slight curve. I noticed there wasn't a great amount of option as to where to mount them. --Rip
  6. so ... the engine guard size must be larger than 1" diameter. I ordered a set of Kuryakan highway pegs...with 1 inch mounts. Now what? can I use them any way, and just tighten them down as far as they go?
  7. A couple of safety factors for my top choices: 1. ABS Braking 2. Additional lighting on the rear 3. Passing lights Performance matters 4. Fuel injection 5. Better fuel mileage--it's ridiculous that we don't get 50+mph on a motorcycle 6. Fix the transmission noise issue 7. beef up charging system Comfort issues 8. Highway pegs 9. Backrest 10. Venting Other niceties 11. CD player 12. Full Bluetooth headset compatible 13. Full instrumentation Rip
  8. -7C, 19F, another stellar riding day in an Ontarian spring. And I wasn't alone--I was sitting in the coffee shop in Alliston and watched some other die-hard riding by. Rip
  9. What??!! It's too cold in Georgia to ride? I was out today in 20 degrees. Had a rare sunny day with dry roads.
  10. ha ha, the next thread will be about the dumbest thing I did, draining the battery because I used the kill switch to shut down, and then forgot to turn the key off. :rotf:
  11. if I understand the purpose of the kill switch, it is for emergencies, when you just have to shut down immediately. Has anyone ever used it for that? The only time I've used it is at customs, where I toggle it off/on so I can talk to the customs agent, and be ready to restart. Similarly in other instances where I want to quick talk with someone and can't hear well with the bike running.
  12. Had a great time at the motorcycle show in Toronto yesterday, but was disappointed to see only two Ventures, one 1st generation and one 2nd with a lot of people looking it over. Also disappointed not to find more vendors with add ons, etc. I was hoping to find a lightbar for the rear. The things to sell seemed to be leathers, helmets, and sunglasses. It so motivated me to ride that I went out for a spin this morning in +3 weather --and then quickly washed the bike to get the salt residue off! Anyone else make the show?
  13. When I bought my Venture last month I had the dealer add passing lights; I am almost sure they installed them to turn on with the high beam. That was a Michigan dealer--haven't had it inspected or licensed yet in Ontario--anyone know if that will present a problem?

    maps or gps

In my experience they can be a distraction. Anything that takes your eyes off the road can be a distraction, and the Venture is loaded with distractions! But I like everyone of them. So I just determined to manage the distractions as safely as possible. I disagree with the notion that a GPS is a safety tool.:rotf:But it is a tool worth having. On occasion the GPS will list an address incorrectly--but it is generally reliable. For me paper maps still have a role at giving you an overall perspective that the GPS just can't do. I think the cruise control is a safety tool, relieving the strain on your hand, as well as maintaining constant speed so you don't frustrate the people behind you.
  15. I've got Echelon Insurance, using the broker Riders Plus Insurance. It was the cheapest I could find when i first got it over a year ago. --Ken
  16. My experience as an American living in Canada has been anything but negative. General all around acceptance; very little U.S. bashing--although I hear it occasionally. I just laugh and tell them they should join the U.S. so they can vote for the government that influences their economic wellbeing. I have never been made to feel unwelcome. I do not find Canadians any more different than Americans who come from different regions. We lived 18 years in Washington state, 8+ years in Texas, and now two in Ontario. Ontario is more like Washington than Texas is--hands down. Set aside some obvious differences in political structure, money, and the sameness far outweighs the differences. Canadians are far more familiar with the states than Americans are of the provinces.
  17. reverse would be a negative factor for me--an unnecessary way to add $$ to the final cost. Plus that, adding it would increase the number of Ventures dropped in parking lots--and we wouldn't want that, would we?
  18. It looked just like the Virgin Mary to me--and I just chatted with her yesterday, so I should know.
  19. I am curious what exactly they do at the first 600 mile service? If I change oil and filter and final drive oil, is it that critical to have it in at 600 miles?
  20. Just a little thing to consider first: I talked with an OPP officer recently who said that when rear signal lights act as running lights it creates an illusion of a car a long distance away, and by the time they realize you are a motorcycle close by it can be too late for you--especially if they are inebriated. We definitely need additional lighting on the rear--I plan to do so with an LED bar of some kind located somewhere on the rear trunk. --fwiw
  21. There's not a good way to miss any tollways. Coming from Wisconsin it will either be I-90 or I-94. The latter is a little longer, but has less tollway. But, goodness, right through Chicago? Try to time it at before 6:30 a.m. and you may make it without hitting the really heavy traffic. I did that going west from Michigan, hitting south Chicago at 6:30. Busy, but tolerable. Better yet, just drive straight east to Manitowoc and take the ferry to Ludington.
  22. Them Canadians are so crafty, I hear theys plannin' to take over and become the Untied States of Canada. Then we don't need no borders any more.
  23. I wonder which border the terrorist came across, who blew up the building in Oklahoma City? Probably the Texas border.
  24. my wife was just in south Texas visiting some friends. One of them said she knew someone who lived in Edmonton, and wondered if that were close to where we lived (just north of Toronto). It's hard to know how to respond to such naivety.
  25. better yet, just take it for a cold weather ride. I'll ride any day the roads are dry and no snow or ice.
