    Longmont, CO

We're moving to Longmont, CO...does anyone know of a good wrench out there for a 2nd generation bike?
  2. I'm curious how many of you with trailers have trailer plates. I bought my bike and trailer from a guy in Minnesota who said they didn't need trailer plates on a bike trailer there. I'm from Michigan, and haven't bothered to license it--and haven't been stopped so far. --Ken
  3. you were all right on...it was the valve cover gasket. I stared at it for a good 15 minutes while running until I could trace it back to a nearly unseeable point. Bike is back at the shop for the the mechanic to correct the work. (and I'm losing riding time!)
  4. Thanks, Gary, that's helpful. I'll take another look tomorrow and see if I can figure out how to post a picture. Ken
  5. last fall I had some work done, including replacing a valve cover gasket; the very next ride I stopped at a rest area and saw all kinds of oil on the ground. It was coming out of the head gasket at the left front of the engine. As far as I can tell, oil is clean; coolant is clean, so it is just leaking to the exterior. My question is whether there is anything the wrench could have done to cause the head gasket to leak--like re-torquing the bolts, or whatever. Since I don't know enough about it, I'm hesitant to bring the bike back to the same guy. Ken in Port Huron
  6. brings back great memories of a colorful fall ride through there. Definitely one of the best rides in the country. Another must is Beartooth Pass on US 212 on the Wyoming/Montana border.
  7. having just been rear-ended by by a young guy in a hurry, using a left turn lane for a passing lane, this is very sobering. if there hadn't been another vehicle between me and the stupid fart, I may well have been airlifted to the hospital. Driving is one of the most dangerous things people do on an ongoing basis. I add my prayers for the biker's family.
  8. my RSMV was totaled a couple weeks ago, now I'm looking for another one. What would be a better deal, an 06 with 20,000 miles, or a 99, at half the price, with 18,000 miles? Are there any major differences between years?
  9. survived a motorcycle accident...got rearended by a dumb a$$ trying to use a left turn lane for a passing lane. came out with a headache and a smashed up bike. i was waiting at a red light to turn left; after the light turned green i waited for several oncoming cars, and just started moving when i got hit; two cars involved, the one behind me was hit by someone behind him. the guy responsible tried to convince me to just accept $2000 rather than report it it! NOT--i expect the bike was totaled.
  10. I'm looking for a good store to check out helmets--anyone know of one that has lots of options?
  11. thanks for the help! Ken
  12. I just moved from Ontario to Michigan...does anyone have advice for the cheapest motorcycle insurance in Michigan? Ken in Kalamazoo
  13. Is this supposed to happen every time you turn on the ignition? I hear it usually after the bike has been sitting awhile. It doesn't seem to happen consistently--but I've never had any problem starting it. --Rip
  14. I did a big section of the Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia on my way home from vacation last month. Wonderful road--made for motorcycles. I hope to do that again. I did it during the week, and had very low traffic. --Ken

    Octane

a higher octane has nothing to do with getting better performance or "cleaning things out". It just means that it takes a higher temperature to burn, and if your engine is designed to burn at lower heat, it will not completely burn a higher octane fuel. --it will not cause your engine to burn hotter. The only time I have noticed a problem with octane levels is when driving in the western mountains where they sell 85 octane--my bike ran like s* there unless I put the mid-grade in. The only benefit to running with 91 is to the company selling it to you. Rip
