Mirror screws ?
lonestarmedic replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I picked up a set of adapter bolts. The male threads are threaded for the mirrors and the female are 10mm right hand thread. I plan to put a couple small plugs in the holes. Look way down the page on the link below to find the adapters. They arent shiny, but they work. http://www.flyncycle.com/acatalog/Universal_Mirrors.html On the plus side it does give a good hex to work with and a standard thread to use for accessories. I am moving my radio controls to the right bar in preparation for mounting a Zumo on the left side. JB -
Ok- I have no idea why the pics didn't load right. I saw all 3 last night. Today one was missing and te others were small icons only. I edited and reloaded. Should work. It looks really ragged, but it has possibilities. Since it is a 1986 Black cherry/gold I think I will see if 86er can give me tips on plastic repair:smile5: JB

Hey folks, got me a new bike! Looks to be a 1986 Venture Royale. A bit of polish and some Sea Foam and good to go. Actually, I am going to go fetch it and tear it down for spares. (It was the only way to get the chrome fender bottom) JB

That is a nice looking buckle. I would want 3. Sign me up and let me know. JB

There are a lot of places to stay. The ranch has kinda communal cabins. The entire hill country area caters to motorcycle riders. I suppose once we get a couple ideas, we can put up one of those pole type thingys and go frome there. JB

Just put the word out but lets shoot for the 1-2nd weekend in October for the next stampede. JB

Greetings to all- The 1st Annual Texas Venture Stampede is over and all that is left are the memories and the photos. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the weekend. We had beautiful weather and a great place to ride. The Texas Railroad was interesting. I think it would be better suited as a children's activity. The meal Saturday night and the door prizes were great. The local Yamaha dealer ponied up a great stack of goodies. Grand prize was won by Lil'bit. She has a $100.00 gift certificate to River Road for clothing and accessories. The folks from Canada received the longest distance travelled award. The City of Athens provided them 2 keys to the city in honor of their attendance. Our final total was 26 people attending on 21 bikes. I travelled about 1800 miles from Thursday until Sunday night. We occupied 22 rooms at the Quality Inn. Along with our group, there was a Lincoln Continental Collectors Club holding a meet. What a great display of cars. Unfortunately I did not get pictures. I think some of our other members may have. My thanks to Mavrick for his help in putting the Stampede together. I had a blast working with him. And thanks to the sneaky folks who paid my tab at supper Saturday night! I am putting together a CD of all the pictures that I got from folks. Crimson Knight grabbed some short video clips to add to the collection. I will be sending these out in about a week as momentos of the weekend. I need anyone who did not get pictures to me on Saturday night to shoot me a PM. Mavrick and I will be sending certificates of appreciation to all of the places who helped out. Now, the final order of business for the 1st Annual Texas Venture Stampede- All who attended have asked 2 questions- When and where will the 2nd Annual Texas Venture Stampede be held? Give me your input now folks. I am thinking maybe Hill Country and we run the Three Sisters for fall of 2009. http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/hh269/lonestarmedic/Stampede08/ Thanks for the memories JB

Look on e-bay. Do a search for venture in the motorcycle parts section. There is a place selling the rubber only. Have to pullyour old stuff apart. Looks like several folks have tried them with good results. JB
-
Jim I did the same thing. I found the inside acorn nuts that hold the latch onto the saddlebag were loose! That gave enough flex for flight. I used a drop of blue threadlocker on those puppies right away. Also, keep a watch on e-bay as the lids do show up. I was lucky and had purchased matching spares a few months before. I used JB weld to fill in the scratches after sanding the lid down. Then resanded and primed. Now, I will wait until I purchase paint. It is expensive! JB

Good wires and OEM caps. Had zero problems and fast service. I will vouch for the seller. JB

Of course, nearby is the town of Athens Texas. Home of the famous Venture Stampede. The fun starts next weekend at the Quality Inn. About 2 hours east of Dallas. Up 281 you will find me, Sappermedic, BillP, BuddyRich, BigShell, Tom, and the entrance to hill country. Tom is in Blanco, a good place to start. BillP is on the NW side of San Antonio. Glad to have you around. Oh, HipShot and Rattlesnake are near you around Victoria/Refugio. JB
-
BuddyRich- I think retire has a couple of possibilities. Most likely it is when you buy new tires and then run them down to the cords chasing a few dollars. Thus you now have to go in for a retirement procedure. Then you can run the next set bald trying to make a living. JB

I have been using Mobil 1 15W50 for a bit over a year on this bike (1986 VR) with no problems. Clutch is fine. In the summer heat of Texas, I think the bike has run a bit cooler. There aren't any additives for friction. The new bottle of 15W50 has a different cap. It used to be a red screw top. This signified the lack of additives. However, the stuff inside is the same. JB

Roll-on engine vibration
lonestarmedic replied to mp66226's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had an ST1100. The longitudinal V is a lot smoother than the RSV. Run the RSV up in RPM and it will be smoother. Tom is correct. Lugging down to 2-3 grand will produce a vibration at roll-on. I usually shift at 4000 running easy and 5000 when hitting on ramps. The motor really enjoys the 4-6 area. I have a 1986 which has a different gearing - same motor. I run 70-75 at 4000-4400. It is like a magic sweet spot. JB -
I wear Bates service boots. I have the 5" side zip with composite toe. No metal in the boot. The usually go under the name of Bates Ultralights. They also make the same in an 8" boot. I wear these 14 hours a day. Very comfortable. My other boot is a brown 6" hiking boot by Columbia. They are speed-lace and waterproof. I switch between these as a daily wear. I have flat feet and find both boots to have great support. The toe box on the Colunbia boot has a rubber type cover that has held shape well. I have found that not all boots work well with foot controls. Some heels hold my foot back far enough to make shifting uncomfortable. JB

Sticking caliper
lonestarmedic replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, The manual is available in electronic format for about #15.00 I got mine off of e-bay. It is about 96mb file. Got a broadband connection and the ability to receive a 100mb e-mail? JB -
Rear wheel help 84 xvz12
lonestarmedic replied to gord's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mark - there should be the stepped washer against the bearing. From bearing outward: 1. Bearing to stepped washer 2. Stepped washer to caliper arm 3. Caliper arm to thick washer 4. Thick washer to swing arm. See the attached parts diagram. The caliper arm is not shown. However, notice the collar and the washer. The parts breakdown is of a 1983 Venture. Number 27 is the washer and number 4 is the collar. In between them is the caliper arm. JB -
I had the same classic problem. Clutch slip in 4th and 5th under hard accelleration. I elected to use the PCW racing kit and new friction plates. I found that the old frictions were thick enough but I could see deterioration of the material. A bit more porous looking. I figured after 20+ years, it couldn't hurt to install new frictions. I soaked them in new oil overnignt then installed. Used the soak time to clean off the old gasket and sand the steel discs a bit. Just enough to break the glaze and put a cross-hatch pattern in them. Installed a new bearing. THe PCW spring feels great. The clutch is strong as a mule. JB

Sticking caliper
lonestarmedic replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, 3 ideas here. You can try spreading the pucks back into the bores. This might break them loose. Kinda work them back and forth. Remember that the pucks work from both sides equally. So yo have to take into account the movement of one side when you push the other side. THe other idea is to go ahead and remove the caliper. Pull the pistons from the bores and inspect. Depending on the condition of the o-rings and dust seals you might get away with re-assembling. Otherwise it takes 2 kits to rebuild. Kit prices are about $60.00 for the pair. LAst idea is purchasing a caliper from e-bay. I have seen them go for half the price of the lits!! Or even less. JB -
Gas reserve knob
lonestarmedic replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin - go on e-bay and get a used petcock assembly. Order the correct gaskets/orings for the petcock and for the fuel level sensor. Then you can drain the fuel, goe through the sensor hole and inspect the tank. Clean out the garbage (rust and sludge) and install the new petcock. Get a couple fuel filters to change out over the next few tanks of fuel. Mine is set on reserve and I rely on the gauge and the read warning light. It is accurate to the manual. Red light blinks at about 1.3 gallons remaining. It goes to a steady light at 1 gallon left. JB -
Battery sensor bypass
lonestarmedic replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, as long as the resistor goes from the sensor wire to a SWITCHED 12vdc you should be ok. Before replacing my fusebox, mine was on the 12vdc accessory screw. JB -
Rear wheel help 84 xvz12
lonestarmedic replied to gord's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gord - try the pictures in this thread. You can click on them to get a bigger view. There should be a thick heavy washer between the caliper support arm and the swing arm. Hope this helps. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=515 JB -
Turn Signal "Short" cut Solution?
lonestarmedic replied to igya's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Look on the flasher. The terminals are probably something like this: L for load (turn bulbs here) P for pilot (dash indicator light) X or something else (input 12vdc) On a 3 prong unit, you shouldn't find a ground. Although variations are great. THe ground terminal types are usually on an asian imports. You can go to www.grote.com and navigate to the 2006 full line catalog listings. There is a PDF page for flashers. I didn't put the direct link because it is about 5mb. It shows the various possibilities. On that 550 just find the load and 12vdc input. the pilot could be left blank. I would use the pilot circuit myself. Run it to a small LED and it will blink when the turn signal is active. Won't tell which direction, but it will keep the 20 mile turn blink from happening. The output from the pilot is only capable of running something akin to a 194 bulb. JB -
Turn Signal "Short" cut Solution?
lonestarmedic replied to igya's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You mention a 3 prong flasher. The standard flasher is 2 prongs. The 3 prong unit has 1 prong going to a very lightweight circuit for the dash indicator lamps. Hooking to that prong with a full load is bad ju-ju. Check out a 550/552 vs. a 536 flasher. Oh, watch out for the occasional flasher from the cop/fire folks. It is 3 prongs but does the wig-wag alternating deal. Your idea should work well. 2 bulbs (1156 size) running at once on a standard duty flasher should be fine. Flasher between fuse and switch is the correct spot. JB
