  1. Ya need me to bring anything over to Houston? We have gasoline etc. around here. Not a problem to do and be glad to help. JB
  2. I have soldered several units. I have a good variable soldering iron and station. Send it over and I will be glad to clean, solder, and test the unit on my 1986. JB
  3. I saw that. A nice solid old school Honda. Looked really nice. JB
  4. Well, went over to SapperMedic's house this afternoon. Seems Mocha has a new ebony friend! A 1986 Venture Royale. Only has 18K miles and everything is intact w/out cracks. Has brand new Dunlop 404s on and had an E1 until I jiggled the wiring. (We'll get that and its buddy very soon) The pinstriping is tastefull and it has a nice set of grips. The intercom functions fairly well. Needs a wire or two chased. He got all the books including a service manual. A bag of spare gaskets and parts, and 2 DOT certified half helmets. The old girl needs SEA FOAM. She came from san Antonio over a year ago and hasn't been run even 200 miles since then. I figure 2 cans and some sporty running. Then fresh plugs, wires and a carbtune. So, look out world - got a bit of 1986 thunder coming out of S.A. And it has a VentureRider bell hung next to the clutch lever. Figured when it got full, a little flick at speed and out go the nasty little critters. JB
  5. President said Texas help is ready to go. He also talked about lessening restrictions from the EPA to get more fuel in. He also talked about watching for price gouging. Said the government will be looking at prices. Don't know what they think constitutes gouging. Prices up here about .05-.15 yesterday. JB
  6. Called and checked. DonH. (TxVenture) has a few tree limbs off and still has power. Said the internet was working. Cable out all except the shopping channels. DonC. is good. Has a small hole in the roof from a pine tree lim. Said about 3 gallons of water, nothing to really worry about. Kbay lost a couple flags and his ornamental windmill is over. He has relatives in from Galveston. Including some horses. Said the fire pager only had one call last night. Didn't get an answer from Mavrick, but he is outside the main area towards Dallas. Rattlesnake evacuated out of Refugio about Wednesday. Put his bikes in the fire station. Didn't try Hipshot. San Antonio has about 4000 refugees in so far. Houson got its backside kicked pretty good. Galveston may be fairly flat. San Antonio is sunny, breezy and about 75-80 this morning. JB
  7. No Giga- The nuts that need to be secured to prevent falling off are on the top side of the seat. JB
  8. MochaLady I have a case of water, a box of twinkies, a gas grill and an old fashioned coffee percolator. We are ready!! If anyone needs a last minute spot to crash away from the coast we can share the twinkies and we have an air mattress. JB
  9. Thank-you all for remembering. It seems as the years go past fewer people take the time to look back at the day that brought us to war on terrorism. As a retired Fire Captain, I consider it an honor to be entrusted with the safety of the public. As I sit at my desk today with my badge on my belt and a black mourning band across the face I wonder where we would be today if the events did not happen. Thanks to those who are gone, God bless those who are still protecting us JB
  10. A really good idea. But, if you wanted to make them even easier to see and find I would make them out of "safety chrome" or possibly "high-vis polished stainless". :big-grin-emoticon: JB
  11. Marcarl- If you have spotted a couple of my posts I got a death wobble last weekend. I am running Continentals. Had about 800 miles on them at the time. All new bearings front and rear. Balanced front and rear. Pressure at 35psi front and rear. Hit once but could not reproduce later. I think I got a wind shear coming around a semi. However, what contributed on the bike is my question. Going after the steer bearings next. Going to put in tapered bearings and the V-Max aluminum washer instead of the rubber. Also going to check the handlebars at the rubber bushings. My swingarm seemed good but I will recheck the adjuster. Also going to check wheel runout front and rear mounted on the bike. The only thing I can notice is a very slight single wiggle from wind buffeting near a semi. That seems to be pretty normal. JB
  12. If you are active, reserve, or retired military you can get full Office 2007 for $20.00. Also works for government civilians. If you are army, it is available through AKO. Can't remember the other branches but it is through the Microsoft HUP (Home Use Program). It is available for both PC and MAC. JB
  13. I just put Continental Conti-Tours on. Put about 1500 miles so far. Ride is good. Feels sure-footed. Ran in the rain today with no problems. Rear is rated for 910lbs ay 49psi. I am playing with pressures right now. Started at 40 front and 45 rear. Too stiff. I have dropped to 35 front and rear. I may move up a few pounds. The Continentals have a different rubber compound in the center and an extra belt. Supposed to give long life and better ride. JB
  14. I admit it. I have a colorful toolbox. A lot of my tools are bright colored. The O-ring picks are pink, The small torx or green, the small screwdrivers are purple. My standard size screwdrivers are red. Snap-On had a thing for bright colors one year. I like them. Found a black handled screwdriver with a lawnmower one time. The fancy rails are a king-size bookcase headboard I am refinishing. It is sitting between the mig-welder, the drill press, and the compound miter saw. I really gotta get it finished. JB
  15. I pulled the ball bearing then went through that side and drove the needle bearing out. I expanded the collet for the puller until it fit the bore then drove it out. It looked ok but I put in a new one on principal. JB
  16. BuddyRich - if he goes over maybe we can just give him co-ordinates to "drop in for a visit" JB
  17. The rest of the pictures for the wheel bearing job. The last picture is of a wheel pulled apart with brute force. The drive hub was pried off without removing the snap ring. JB
  18. When I removed the front and rear wheel bearings I used a blind hole pilot puller from Harbor Freight. It is a Pittsburg brand. Normal price is $40.00 I got it on sale for $30.00. You put the collet through the bearing and tighten with a set of wrenches. The collet spreads and grabs under the bearing. On wheels with spacers Tightening securely will force the fingers between the spacer and bearing. Then you use the slide hammer attachment. It could use a heavier weight but it works well. Stop and retighten the collet several times. The other pictures show the front right spacer, the drive hub, the needle bearing sleeve and then the sleeve installed. Also the bearing spacer tube and the rear right spacer. Note: the small raised ridge goes against the bearing. Also shown is the speedo drive tang and its spacer/ring. JB
  19. Does anyone have the numbers to the upper and lower bearings and races for the triple tree. I want to minimize down time and reduce costs a bit. After my little shake and bake, I won't feel comfortable until I replace them. Oh, Mavrik:stickpoke: - about that keeping 1st Gens out front so you wouldn't run away from them. Masterguns said to remind you that my death wobble hit at 110mph in 4th gear. And you know my speedo is right on because we checked it against your GPS that morning several times. I think the wobble got triggered by cutting across the air wake from the front of the semi. I remember a slight gust as I replay the bronco ride. THat and a groove or tar snake would have started it. Weird but un-nerving. JB
  20. Cat 1 hurricane? We will just go out and tell it to turn around and go home. Just get that 1st Gen out and go on a cruise JT. It can outrun a Cat 1 in 3rd gear. JB
  21. Kbay - try this post. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=249212#post249212 I listed the local Lake Athens Marina and campground. JB
  22. Took off for Houston on Friday. Spent a wonderful time on I-10 waiting for a semi to clear a bridge. Seems he was a bit too wide for the rails!! They had to jack the load up over the rails. Got to town and had a visit with TxVenture (Don H.) Went to Gunboats and had home-cooked beans and cornbread. Dang was that 17 bean good! Left the next morning for Rusk to meet with Masterguns and Mavrik. Beautiful ride up, started at 69 degrees and went to about 80 by noon. From Rusk the 4 of us took off for Lake O' the Pines. Great ride up. Did have a bit of fun with the dreaded death wobble!!I was in the lead and went around a semi at slightly (Ahem- about 110mph) above posted speeds. As I cut back in ol' Mocha proceeded to tank slap. Bars moving about 6-8 inches and the whole bike dancing like a drunken hip-hopper. Gunboat said he just backed off and started flashing his brakes to give me room if I went down. What a buddy! I got her back straight and we went on. At the next stop sign I pulled the entire seat cover out of my cheeks and put it back on. I then worked the bike through a couple more runs and speed changes at the same gears and speeds. No problems. Guess I will check the front end again. Gunboat can tell you about the bird's-eye view. We got to L.O.P. and loved the area. Hated the accomodations. Sparse and no places to eat. Actually checked in the had supper and cancelled the rooms. Did have a good catfish dinner in a 10 seat cafe. Left for Athens to arrive about 9pm. Masterguns cut off at I-20 and headed for home. We had a good sleep and checked the area. Mavrik served as our tour guide. Perfect place for the Stampede. Even a Yamaha dealer in town. (Go get-em Mavrik). Headed for Houston at noon on Sunday. Lost the R.H. saddle bag lid on the bottom of town. Found it battle scarred in the center median (thanks Don). I split at I-45 and SR 79. Got home at 6pm last night. Miles - Me 1200 total Gunboat and I on Sat. - 500 A special thanks to my riding buddies. Don C. (Gunboat), Herb (Masterguns), and Mike (Mavrik). It was a pleasure to have ya'll on board. I couldn't have done it without you. The bark of 2 sets of Bub's and the hum of 2 1st Gens. can't be beat. By the way Herb, beautiful maroon 1st Gen. And, I do have a spare lid in the garage. So, bike back to original by 7pm. on Sunday. JB
  23. First off, we have moved home base to Athens, Texas. The Lake O' the Pines was nice to ride but amenities were missing. No places at ALL to eat and pretty low rooms. I think Masterguns and I both looked for Roger the Roach. We actually cancelled our rooms and went to Athens after talking to Mavrick over supper. Athens is closer to the railway. Also, the ride to the depot will include one of Ride Texas' 10 best voted roads. Not a tail of the dragon, but really nice. Sorry for the delay on this. We could not get a camping spot with a close motel. In Athens there is the State Freshwater Fishing Conservation. It has huge aquariums and displays ( can also fish and release with supplied equipment). Also a great outdoor Arboretium nearby. Lots to do and see. A bit far from Caddo Lake and the paddleboat. We could go up on Friday if a group wishes. Saturday will be the ride and the train ride. I will have the group details on this in a day or so. The ride starts in Palestine on the 18th. There is a box lunch available (checking the price). The individual price is $38.00 per person without the lunch. I am working with them for a group rate. I will post more about the trip as we see the reservations chime in. Please reply to the below listed link in the regional rally section so we can get a head count. See here for the reservation and lodging details http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27185 THanks to all. JB
  24. Sapper - hold onto the hitch. If you don't want it I will purchase it from you. THen hang it on the wall for someday just like the guys indicated. Shoot, I might need it in October. JB
  25. Hi Kreg- Pam does not hurt anything on the bike. It does have an oily film. I use it on everything but the windshield. Didn't bother up here this time. Bugs aren't too bad. Gunboat and I hit a few coming up. Watch the paper towels and the dryer sheets. They can scratch. They are a fiber product made from wood pulp. The wet towel trick also works great. Warm water and lay it over the windshield. Soaks them right off. I am using plain old pledge right now. When I wash the bike they will slide off easily. We saw an ambulance today that must have hit the entire love-bug population!! The entire front was black. I will give a report on the ride in a different thread. JB
