Auto volume control
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I pulled the panel and opened it up to the same point as in mbrood's pictures. Washed the white screen and cleaned the microphone. Had a lot of dust and crud inside. Cleaned with CRC electronic cleaner. Re-assembled and voila! I have auto volume again. I will look for one of these controls and add it to my collection of radio items to reverse engineer this fall. I can't see too many items that cannot be replaced easily. Thanks for the pictures mbrood. I knew what to expect when I pulled it apart. JB -
Auto volume control

Hi Squeeze - The volume mic is dry. I checked all the pins under the radio while I was there. Next step is to pull the control and check the little mic. It may be clogged up etc. Or the years of water and dust may have taken it out. I will look into replacing the little critter. My guess is the control potentiometers are ok. JB -
Auto volume control

Anyone ever try and diagnose or repair the auto volume microphone in the 1st gen. ? Mine was working until this week. Possible that I got water in it washing the bike. Or I changed out my speakers. Pulled the radio and both side panels to install them. Also installed a noise filter on the C.B. I got used to the auto volume. JB -
New Fork Brace
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I guess that is what I did without thinking. I started at the axle and ended at the top pinch bolts. How much slop is in the pinch bolt area? Always wondered about alignment. How thick is the spacer and what are the results of running without it? Guess I might need to R and R the wheel and check. JB -
Ya know the rules!!! Don't mean a thing without the pictures. Where is the grinning man with the bike? JB

New Fork Brace
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Condor- was wondering if your 1991 has bow-legged forks like a cowboy? What would happen if you loosened the front like I did, put in the brace loosely then used a small ratchet strap or something to pull the tubes tight to the brace? Just a curiosity here. Perhaps our 1st gen ventures are indeed prone to a bit of fork stress over the years. The ant-dive and weight during decelleration might cause a bit more stress than Yamaha predicted. Ever see a fork brace that went on the outside and surrounded the tube. Superbrace has a few models like that. If we could make a wrap around the outside and the brace on the inside of the tubes they would be locked into place. JB -
New Fork Brace
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So, we have another with knock-knees! I was wondering if I was unique. Brian, loosen both bolts on the lower sides until you are sure all of the tension is off the clamps. Loosen the axle clamp bolt and then the axle bolt until it has a visible gap between the flange head and the lower tube. Take a couple wood wedges kinda like door stop wedges and tape them between the rim/tire and the tubes. If not there, godown between the lower tube tips and the wheel hub. In any case watch where you put the wedges to avoid the fender and mounts and the speedo gear etc. I watch the lowers spread about 1/4 inch combined on both sides. That gave me enough slop to tap the brace with my fist and watch it seat. I tightened the axle first. Figured if there was any problems with the tube rotation that torquing the axle would bring things parallel/in line. Let me know your results. Mine were dramatic. I still have a bit of shimmy at 75+ with no hands on the bars. However I think steering head adjustment should help. I will replace the bearings in the steering head this fall. -
If you are referring to the helmet connector plugs then the answer is yes they are standard 5 pin. My 1986 has the same pin configuration as the older Goldwings, pre-1998 Harley's, and the newer Venture's. Some may have a shroud or sleeve for weather tight purposes. JB

Glad you like the bike. I am partial to the smooth ride of the brown ones. Have fun but don't let them notice the Corbin seat. JB

I went to the lcal Yamaha dealer the other weekend and got my bike washed. They couldn't figure out what year it was!! I told one guy it was the 2009 Venture prototype. The folks washing Mocha said it was cool and a classic. JB

Well, I finally got my fork brace installed. As y'all wll remember my width between the tubes was about .005 - .007 too narrow. I got serious today and got all the weight off the front and loosened the axle. Then I loosend the lower triple tree pinch bolts all the way. I got a couple wood wedges between the tubes and the rim on each side. Tapped them in just slightly and watched the brace drop in!! Put in the bolts for the brace just snug. Tightened the axle bolt to 75 ft./lbs. I also tapped the tubes at the bas as I torqued the axle. Thinking the tubes might be like a u-joint youke. Tightened the pinch bolts and finally the brace. Test ride- cornering is now so much quicker I almost leaned into the fire hydrant on the corner! Tar snakes are just worms and tank slap is now a slight vibration. Time to check the head bearings. If the brace width is correct, then my forks were bowed in for some reason. I've seen bowed out but never in. Thanks for the bulk purchase. It was worth it. JB

Folks it isn't about making friends or earning congratulations. It is always about what is right. I considered it an honor to visit Albert's grave. I thank you one and all for helping me recognize these past heros. With your help the wars of the past will be remembered. As it has been quoted "Those who do not remember tbe past are destined to repeat it". JB

I agree on the 800-1000 class. I will say that most of the sport tourers and multi purpose bikes have only one drawback. They are all a bit on the tall side. Especially the Suzuki V-Strom. Fantastic bike but not a floot foot stance for a lot of people. Want something different? Try looking at either the Piaggio MP3 (500cc scooter) or the Can-Am Spyder (3 wheeler) Or go into the past and get a Honda CB900. It has 10 speeds and gobs of power. Looks good and can take 2 up. JB

Repositioning Passenger Intercom Connector
lonestarmedic replied to jryan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Doug- see you figured out the keyboard plug! I am going to replace my passenger plug in on the '86 with the same thing. The socket in the rear control box lets the plug hang horizontal. Found that a few dismounts by a passenger pulls the pins loose. I figure that a few inches of cord would allow the plug to dangle and take the stress off the cord. JB -
Tried it about a year ago. Found it user friendly and ran well from the CD. As I run a laptop I don't run a second OS. I used it as a file server and found it stable. I eventually put it on a flash memory card and used it in a card reader. Configured to boot from the flash drive. Fast as all get out and stable. JB

Evening all - just a small thing in the greater sceme of things. I stopped by the Ft. Sam Houston cemetary with MochaLady and visited Beer's dad. Thought I would post a picture so we all realize remebering veterans should be a 365 day a year job. Beer- thanks for letting me know he was there. I was able to say a prayer for my own dad at the same time. JB

Ok folks, I need a bit of help. I purchased a set of floorboards from a member here. Nice transaction. They will be arriving next week. I have searched and cannot find instructions for mounting. Also, I remember seeing a set that had a cross brace under the motor. His set was on his bike when he bought it. No cross brace on the bike. They look to be Venture Line boards. I sure could use a set of instructions. I am sure the parts will only line up one way so I can figure it out. Just want to find things like bolt length to make sure parts are correct. Attached are pics of the boards I am getting and the boards I saw on e-bay with the bar/brace. Pictures marked Left and Right are the items I purchased. JB

Skydock - Just sent you a PM with a link on how I fixed my fuse block. Duplicate problem to yours. Easy fix that just takes time and some soldering. I installed an ATC fuse block on top of the air cleanet lid. JB

I got back from Kreg and Janet's this afternoon. Great time. BBQ brisket and sausage galore. Don, what was the Bluebell ice cream we had? the one with the cherry bits? That stuff was great! The ride was a bit warm but Kreg, Janet, and Don made it well worth the run. Met a new friend, John, that rides a Suzuki Intruder. And, he lives within rock chucking distance of Piney Woods! He is helping me with the accomodations area. Can't wait for the next run. If Kreg's computer is up and running after the trojan/virus attack I am sure he will post pictures. JB

Just ran into this website...and no I haven't gone green on ya...

JT, I agree that the alternatives need to be used. I now ride every day to work and leave my Expedition sit. When we go in 4 wheels, we take Maggie's Ranger. It is full of E85 corn squeezings! E85 is about 40 cents a gallon cheaper. We only see 2 mpg drop in the city. The engine runs cooler and it doesn't rattle and ping. E85 is about 100 octane or so. We did have to change the spark plugs a few times. E85 cleans carbon out. I just change a plug when it fouls with garbage. We figure it will take a month or so to get the carbon cleaned out. Before this the truck went about 100,000 miles on normal gasoline. JB- 14 replies

What's Everybody Doing this BIG weekend?
lonestarmedic replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
Heading for Houston to help Gunboat eat that cow Kbay had to shoot. Going back to San Antonio on Sunday and spending time with MochaLady looking at property in Floresville and hanging out. Stopping on post tomorrow to make sure that Mr. Albert Gene Hidgdon has a flag on his gravestone. That is Beer's dad. Stop at the memorial on the way off post and say a prayer before starting my weekend. JB- 60 replies
