    Low Gas Mileage

My 2008 Venture went from 38/40 MPG to 23 MPG right after my 600 mile service. Can someone help me. I checked with the head mechanic at te dealership and he told me to keep my foot out of the carbs. HELP!!!!
  3. Just ordered 2 pair of Icon mesh ARC pants for warm weather riding and protection. Anyone tried these? Was told they are very cool in the summer. They have armor in the knees and reinforced panels. http://www.ridersdiscount.com/street-gear/pants-men/54689.php
  4. Is there a difference between the 85/86, and 87 trunk? I found a light bar for the 85/86, but was told it would not fit the 87. Anyone know the difference?
  5. I'm replacing the steering head bearing on my '83. The manual says 5.1 ft/lbs. Where have you adjusted yours to with the hack attached? I've been told that you can tighten it down more to prevent wobble with the hack. Thanks
  6. As I was coming to work at about 7am, I came upon a city cop in front of me that quickly moved into the right lane on a 40mph 4 lane city street. After I passed, he moved back in behind me and paced me for close to a mile. He then blue lighted me and I stopped, blocking the right lane. I knew I was not speeding, so I was curious as to why he stopped me. When he came up beside me, he advised me that running a strobe in my headlight was against the law. I told him that it was interesting that I have had a strobe in my bike for 13 years and was within about 30 miles of putting 100,000 miles on it and he was the first that had ever taken issue with it. I also told him that I had the flash frequency set slower so that it would not be confused as an emergency vehicle. When he told me that for sure I had better not be caught by a Tennessee State Trooper. I told him I had been pulled over by a TST for a strobe, but it was in my taillight lens, activated by the brake. The TST told me that he pulled me over because I had it behind a red lens and a colored strobe was not legal. I also told the city cop that I showed the TST my headlight strobe and he did not take issue with it. I told him I did it to be seen for safety"s sake and he admitted there had been 5 cyclist's death in our area so far this year. He then told me that he also rode a motorcycle. When I asked him what he rode, he would only say that he had two "sport bikes". He told me that he was not going to give me a ticket, but he sure did have an arrogent attitude. I wonder if I can go another 13 years and 100,000 miles without getting pulled over for a strobe? RandyA
  7. Yesterday I sent an email to Avon tire in regards to the cracking sidewall problems. Today I received a call from the corporate office in Stow, OH. It was a fairly lengthy conversation. The call was from a very nice lady with the title of Sales and Marketing Manager. I had told her in my email that within our organization, the Avon was by far the most recommended tire for our bikes. I explained to her though that there had been numerous reports of the cracking sidewalls and that many of us are no longer recommending their tires for the Yamaha Ventures and Royal Stars. Her response was that a couple of years ago, there was a change in the way the tires are poured and that she hasn't heard of any problems since that time. I don't know if that makes sense or not because though there is a current survey, there has not been enough input yet to really get a feel for the dates. I also suspect that many of the tires are long destroyed so there is no way of us getting those dates. She told me that they recognize it as a problem if they see a return rate of more than 1/2% on any specific model or even size tire. She said that she saw this go to about 1% before the change was made in how the tires are poured but it seems to have been OK since then. I told her that I am not convinced that the problem has been resolved. She then went into the usual spill about all the things that can cause a tire to split. I responded to that by telling here that my bike has been stored in the same garage with various tires for about 10 years and that the Avon is the only one that has exhibited this problem. The conversation was friendly but I didn't feel that anything was resolved. She did send me the following document that explains some of the things that might cause the problem as well as some other information. Most of it is common sense but there may be a few things that you will find interesting.
  8. thanks to Don and Rocket my class computer is working great. Don pointed me to the 1st. gen tech forum. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=493 Rocket, Paul if i remember right, actually called me and told me how to operate the thing. I had requested that info and He made the call within a few minutes of my post. This is definately an "Above and Beyond" group of folks. Rocket also told me that it may take more than one try at "the fix" to get it right, He was right. and, I think the trace was bad on the board because i wound up putting a couple of jumpers on the board to get it to work.. Thanks again:bowdown: Now if i could just get the blinkers and cruise to work.
  9. All the tests are done results are back and they don't have a clue! Good news is pains that started all this seem to be gone. Don't know why she had them but they said they straightened tube with probe. Not what they told us at first. Told us it would take surgery to do it. Thats good news ?? All done they don't have a clue but don't want to admit it. They say there is nothing bad in there but want to check again in May??? Good news is she is doing good. Has a little tenderness in kidney area but mouth is working fine!!! I'm in for it if she reads that one!!! :whistling:I'll let you know if I NEED HELP!!!
  10. Today the Queen Bee (Margaret) decided it was time to try out her new knees on the bike. She had her second knee replacement December 28 and has been recuperating. She has been faithfully following her PT regiment and has progressed nicely. This morning we took off on the scoot for a 'trading days' in Livingston Texas. On the return trip I told her I felt a detour coming on and we took off across 105 all the way to Montgomery Texas and then back to Houston. All told about 200 miles. She faired very well. We stopped about every hour for a stretch. It was so nice to have her riding with me again! I have missed her company. On a side note: Boy do I need to get my clutch upgraded! Here's hoping for a fun 2up riding season!
  11. Last week I posted About poor customer service from JP Cycles concerning an order delay. I cancelled the order last Wed and asked them to return the payment to my PayPal acct. I was told it would take 3-4 days. Checked PayPal acct today and no money was sent. Called JP and was told it takes a while. I asked her when it was processed for return and she got quiet for a minute and said it was processed this AM! So, why did your company sit on my refund all week when it should have been returned right away? It was bad enough to be mislead and delayed on my order. She said that PayPal dont do transactions over the weekend. Told her I used PayPal on weekends all the time and that was a lame excuse. Told them I was finished with them for good. Got into my e-mail and guess what.... there was a confirmation email stating the refund is being processed. It was time stamped at the time I was talking to her. To recap: Delay my parts that was supposed to be in stock then drag their feet on the refund..........One sure way to lose anyones business. They sure lost mine!
  12. AS was suggested, I tried get a feel for my vibration issue I talked to the dealer today. They said it would be a 1hr to 1 1/2 hr to do the job. I was trying to get an idea if it's under warranty...nothing said to that. I also was told that my vibration issues would not likely be solved by a carb sync. What say yea all?
  13. I got me some wizzard lightes for the bike but they didnt come with any directions on the best places to put, were is everyone putting theres at? I also got some driving lights that mount on the crash bar but they were out of the mounts for the crash bar at the show and they told me they are 25 from the dealer does any one know what I need to get here?? 14. I have purchased a 1983 venture from an acquaintance and need some assistance. when i bought it it started and ran. I was told that it needed some work to get it running better. so I took it to a recommended shop. after months of waiting, the mechanic told me that the left bank wasn't getting signal to the coil to fire. ( something about a coil near the camshaft) . I brought the bike home frustrated with the time frame, and now the bike won't run at all. I am not a great mechanic, but am capable if necessary. I would like to find a manual for the bike , and some ideas for what to do. none of the local bike shops want to work on it because of the age of the bike, so it looks like I have to do the job myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  15. What would you do different in cycle wreck? My boss called to check up on me to see how I was coming along. I told him that since my lay-down 4 weeks ago, I have had plenty of time to think & watch cycle mishaps on "you tube", watch safety equipment demos and read up on latest safety gear. He asked me, "What would you have done different?" . . . and I told him. But I am interested to know, did you learn anything from your mishap and "What would you have done different?" . . . if you have had a lay-down, motorcycle mishap, accident, wreck.
  16. Ordered a light blue fleece jacket for my wife for Christmas from Big Tom. Ordered to late to get it in, but it did arive later. :doh:I told her I had bought it , so she was waiting for it. The day it arrived she got home before I did, when I came in she was wearing it, told me she loved it, and wore it to work the next day to show it off. Why didn't I do this sooner.:bang head: Thanks to Big Tom and Tater for bringing these and other items to the site, they do a great job:bowdown:. If you ain't got one yet, you need to
  17. I called my local Yamaha Service Manager about getting my 07 RSTD in for a 12,000 mile tune-up and I was SHOCKED! HE asked me if I changed my own oil...and I hesatated and told him that I do. He asked me if it runs okay..I said yes. He told me to clean my air filter and save myself about $800! I then asked him about the carb sync and new plugs...He said the RSTD rarely gets out of sync and the plugs would probably out last the bike! After I got myself off the floor..I said thanks and hung up. These bikes are very tough machines. I did get a set of new plugs (NKG Iridium IX) and took out one my plugs from the bike and it looks perfect. Maybe later. Mark:240:
  18. HI THERE I was wondering if anybody could help me locate the black rubber moulds that go on the top and bottom of the chrome strip at the base of the windscreen on an 86 venture. I have tried all the local dealers here in Adelaide and am told they are no longer available. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. :fiddle: KEEP THE BLACK BITS DOWN

  20. Well, its a snow day, i have a heated garage, and during the summer my friend hit a mailbox with the car i sold him. It shattered his window and left a pretty big dent in both him and the car. I was on my dads 05 GL 1800 when he called and told me, as soon as he told me he was bleeding, i new i needed to hurry. I got on the GL, and i tell you what, that is a quick bike!!! But i digress, we are going to pull the dent out of the side, with a kit, puddy it, sand the small parts and repaint the holes, we also have to do some work on the power window, the motor is still good, but the dent doesn't let it go down. One time though, we were driving around in the freezing cold and someone had pushed down on the window too long, we hit a bump and down came that new window! When were done with that, were going to pull the pipes off my 85, straight off from the catalitic converter, they are going back on though, i just want to hear that muscle car sound!
  21. Please.... step by step. My exwife told me I was not very smart, so make it simple please. Cb
  22. This one should get some really good responses! Last evening while attending the local chapter (SCRC) monthly meeting I was talking with another RSV owner about issues with his Venture(2008). Seems his fuel pump went out and left him stranded a few month's ago. I brought up the mystery power drain that my 2006 was having if it set in the garage for more than a week. He stated that he had the same problem with his wifes BMW and also his Venture on one occasion. He was told it was related to the concrete garage floor and walls. Had to do with amount of moisture in garage and the age old 'Do not store a battery on a concrete floor' as it will drain it. He was told to place a dehumidifier in his garage and te problem will go away. Well he did just that and says the problems is not near as bad as without one. He states the bikes can set for up to a month and still have cranking power. Is there anything to this theory?

    wobble

I am going to post this because Craig is not interrested in joining our site. I went to ride the river road friday, stopped at Arrow head to get gas and a drink. There was a blue Venture there so naturally I walked over to talk with the owner. Name was Craig ( has visited our site but not a internet person, his statment) anyway Craig had the Kumho and the Cobra on his bike, per reading post here in the darkside. He stated he loved the ride but the bike wobbled through curves. My first thought was, here is one with the problem for me to try. I had told him I did not have a problem, and asked if he would let me ride his and him ride mine, he said "ok lets see if we can fix mine". We got on the bikes(me on his) and rode over to scenic drive, our version of the dragon. As soon as I went through the first curve I realized there was no problem with the bike, his handled just like mine. I went on through a few more curves and looked back Craig was way behind. I stopped and waited for him, he pulled up and asked " how did you do that, how did you ride my bike through the curves with no wobble and I'm wobbling on yours". He then made the statement, that he was wobbling on both, and I rode both with no problems, so it must be his ridding style. I asked how long had he been ridding, he said years but he was use to a cbr honda. We talked for a bit and switched bikes back, I told him to let me follow him thru a few, so we took off again, what I noticed was he seemed to have a white knuckle grip on the bars, sitting straight up, knees clamped to the tank, feet close in on the boards. He was wobbling through curves, after few I passed him and stayed at a speed he was running, when we stopped I told him my observations, he told me I looked like I was in a recliner, layed back against the backrest, feet out on the pegs, and he said I rode with one hand on the bars looking back at him in the mirrior. Did not realize I did that but. I told him that to me the RSV is a machine you don't man handle, you ride it. My valkyrie always went through curves in the exact line I wanted, you could hold it ridgid in line, even with the car tire no problems. The RSV I can't do it that way, have to pick a line and let the bike glide through it, like it has a mind of its own sometimes( don't know if that makes sense). He said he understood where I was coming from. He asked what tire pressures I was running, 36 frount, 32 in rear. He had 40 and 42, he said my bike road softer so we adjusted his like mine. I did notice his engine ran smoother than mine. We were at the end so we turned around and started back, Craig had stated he was going to change is position and relax. He first relaxed his arms and lighted his grip on the bars, each curve seemed to get better, by the time we reach the end of the road he was leaving me behind on a road I knew far better than him. I am sure this is not everyone's problem, but it is something to think about. Craig had made the statement to me that 2 bikes set up just alike, under the same conditions should handle the same, on the same road. I agreed with him but reconsidered that statement and it is not necessaraly true, if so the Nascar crews could make every car run the same, and they can not seem to do that. I hesitated to post this, ran it by Gunboat in PM first, did not want anyone to think I am impling they are poor riders, this is just what happened in this case. He felt it should be posted. Might help some. I thought may that some have tried the CT, have been told its not safe, maybe they can not ge that out of their mind, and are tensing up in the curves, or when ever a road characteristic moves the bike in an unual manner. Just a thought. Gregg
  24. I had my regular checkup today with my family doctor. He was getting on to me about my weight because I had gained a couple pounds. I tried to explain about all the stress I had been under lately with Pat. He asked me if I had been exercising and I told him yes...I had been riding my bike. He looked at me and said really? I said yup! I ride my bike as often as possible. He asked how far I ride...and I said well doc...last month I rode 1200 miles in just under 24 hrs. The look on his face was priceless...and his assistant? She was in shock. I said...yes, I ride my motorcycle every chance I get. He said what kind of exercise is that? And I said...heck...I had to gas up 10 times!!! That was exercise, don't you agree? It was awhile before they stopped laughing. Then he told me to get a real bike and PEDAL! Or push the one I got....
  25. I live in Rome, Georgia and last week a woman saw my 2nd gen and told me her husband had a venture for sale. Today I had a chance to take a few pictures with my cell phone and talk with the son-in-law of the owner. It is a white Venture Royale and I am told it is a 1983. I saw some of the fairings that had been removed and the son-in-law said everything is there except for the headlght cowling. I have been told that the bike runs but the carbs need a lot of help and the starter solenoid is bad. The owner is bypassing the solenoid to start the bike. I didn't ask to start it because it was raining today and the bike is parked outside with a tarp covering it from the windshield to the trunk but not covering the sides or front forks/wheel. I pulled back the tarp for a few minutes to get the attached photos. The owner is asking $1000 but I suspect he will take less. This would probably be a good parts or project bike. Unfortunately I didn't get the mileage but I can get this if needed. I don't know much about what to look for on a 1st gen so please call me on my cell 706-346-1886 and I will try to get whatever info you need or I can provide the name and cell phone for the owner. Quillian
