  1. I know this is silly but coming from a Harley air cooled engine I'll be darned if I can find the radiator cap on my 2000 Venture MM, someone enlighten me please as I don't have a manual yet and it only has 6,000 miles on it and has set most of the last year. I need to change all the fluids and the tires before putting it on the road. Still original tires, although no cracking or dry rot visable I won't ride it around the block on them. Having to learn all over again now that I went back non-American.

    Dunlop E3's

Just order a set of E's for my venture from Jake Wilson for 209.00 I so glad teh brickstones wore out 7500 miles and the rear is gone and could not wait any longer on the front to wear out.... I have never been so sick of a set tires in my life.
  3. I know there are a buch of threads out abount tires, however, I just wanted to double check on brand. I have been using metzler me880's for a while but not happy with them at all. I am looking at Dunlop Elite 3's and just want to make sure this is a good tire(s) for my 06 RSV.
  4. He has both avon venom tires the am41 and am42 for $250.00. Also has anyone used the dyna beads for balancing the tires.was going to buy the metzlers but cant, pull the triger on them with all i have been hearing on them. Thanks for any input on this.
  5. Towing this Fibro concept Trailer ,I dont feel like its behind me, My question to you is how much air pressure do I put in these tires, I see that the tires on this trailer have Carisle Sport and Max pressure is 90 psi
  6. I have always loved my avon tires on the 1st Gen and Love them with this 2nd Gen I have enough tread for my trip to Don's Maintenance Day I was planning to get my tires done there You members with the 2nd Gens have a variety of tires .What the max mileage you got from your front and rear tires and what make are they I know that when I had the avons on the rear average wa 12,000 miles on the rear A little past the wear bars
  7. Ok so the real question is, can you run two different brand/tread pattern tires on the front and rear... The main reason I am asking is because I am thinking of switching to a M880 and I currently have a Bridgestone on the front. The Bridgestone still has about 1/2 the life left in it.. I have heard mixed stories about traction, handling, and well all out safety..... Some stories I hear is that it's fine to do, and others are just NEVER do that!!! What do you all think... Thanks JM
  8. Check tires!! I looked my Cub Cadet over but didn't pay much attention to tires. They had air in them. Guess one was lower than I thought. Made a couple laps and rolled it off the rim. Didn't know they made 1st gen mower in 09!!
  9. I've seen several discussions of wider vs narrower tires on this forum. But I don't recall any discussion of changing the aspect ratio of the tires. tire width x aspect ratio = height of the tire. The stock rear tire on the 2nd gens is: 150/90-15 where 90 is the aspect ratio that determines how high the tire sits, and hence its circumference. Its also part of the overall gear ratio of the machine. ie: a taller tire is going to require fewer rpm's of the engine than a shorter tire (using the same transmission gear). This implies that a well worn tire will be 'geared' lower than a new tire... How about that? Lower aspect tires have less side wall flex than higher aspect tires, so may be considered stiffer. That might mean better in the twisties? A thought occired to me that one way to achieve a lower gear ratio, much as one does by using a Vmax rear end, could be achieved by using a slightly smaller aspect rear tire? Has anyone tried this? or even thought about it? This is also a possible alternative to installing lowering links.
  10. I've been talking with Dave, over at Wide Whitewall Tires (Hobbycar.com) and he said he can have a run of WHITEWALL car tires specially made for the VR Darksider Members interested! They will be whitewall on BOTH sides, and they WILL be car tires in a 165-80-15 or 155-80-15. He asked me to get an idea of how many people might be interested, and he will get back to me on pricing info. SO- If it's something you're interested in, let me know. Either reply to the post or PM me. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask him, feel free, and I'll email him on Monday with the list of questions gathered! So far, one of the questions I plan on asking him, since they are manufacturing the tire, is can they put the VR logo, or the mottoe somewhere on the tire.. That'd be sweet... Maybe overkill, but who cares?!
  11. Yesterday I sent an email to Avon tire in regards to the cracking sidewall problems. Today I received a call from the corporate office in Stow, OH. It was a fairly lengthy conversation. The call was from a very nice lady with the title of Sales and Marketing Manager. I had told her in my email that within our organization, the Avon was by far the most recommended tire for our bikes. I explained to her though that there had been numerous reports of the cracking sidewalls and that many of us are no longer recommending their tires for the Yamaha Ventures and Royal Stars. Her response was that a couple of years ago, there was a change in the way the tires are poured and that she hasn't heard of any problems since that time. I don't know if that makes sense or not because though there is a current survey, there has not been enough input yet to really get a feel for the dates. I also suspect that many of the tires are long destroyed so there is no way of us getting those dates. She told me that they recognize it as a problem if they see a return rate of more than 1/2% on any specific model or even size tire. She said that she saw this go to about 1% before the change was made in how the tires are poured but it seems to have been OK since then. I told her that I am not convinced that the problem has been resolved. She then went into the usual spill about all the things that can cause a tire to split. I responded to that by telling here that my bike has been stored in the same garage with various tires for about 10 years and that the Avon is the only one that has exhibited this problem. The conversation was friendly but I didn't feel that anything was resolved. She did send me the following document that explains some of the things that might cause the problem as well as some other information. Most of it is common sense but there may be a few things that you will find interesting.
  12. While in the process of looking for a good deal on some new tires I discovered a warranty killer at least for Dunlop. It states in its warranty exclusions the following: Tires used on motorcycles fitted with trailers. Tires injected with dry/liquid balancers or sealants, or in which anything other than air has been used as the support medium. I am assuming this warranty exclusion is referring to the balancing beads and/or any leak preventing sealer? I looked on the Michelin website for similiar exclusion but did not find any. However, the Michelin tire care section is still under construction so it may be in the fine print too. You can see the entire list of Dunlop warranty exclusions at the link below. http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_warranties.asp
  13. OK, I was probably the first rider to post a complaint about the Venom sever sidewall cracking back in '06 after Susanville. Twice. Avon warantee'd both front tires. What I'm wondering is just how many members have experienced sidewall cracking, and on how many tires. So let's start a list. Not interested in all the gorey details, just the facts listed below. PM me and I'll add your info to the list. From all the posts and threads about Avon tires cracking, I'd like to know just how many members are experiencing the problem. This is an after thought, but if you haven't experienced any cracking I'd like to hear from you also. All I'll need would be miles on the tire(s) and number of year(s) on the bike. I just think members are expeiencing way too much sidewall cracking, and sooner or later someone's going to throw a cap and get hurt. Although Avon has been very good on warantees, so far I don't think we've been given the straight story on sidewall cracking. I need the number of tires cracked, milage when replaced, warantee'd?, DOT date, and date replaced. Follow this link to see the results. AVON CRACKING
  14. Last night I brought home the new trailer, so I quick ran up to Pioneer Motorsports to get it inspected. In the mean time Brad T and Naugh T were on the way over for a visit. Got home about 5 minutes before they showed up! Well, I had an appointment for a haircut at noon, so Brad, Rhonda and Becky went to the restaurant for lunch while I got my haircut. Got there just in time to order. Had a great lunch, aqnd finally got back around 1:15. Next order of the day, get brand new tires for the Monte. Loaded the old tires and rims into the trunk and back seat and headed off to BJ's Wholesale for a set of new Michelins. Got about halfway there and realized I forgot the lug nuts for the sumer rims! Also, had to stop at Lowes to find the key for my Bro-in-law's garage that he gave me before picking up the trailer from Lowes. It dropped out of my pocket, I knew it because I used it for a philips screwdriver to attach the plates, and I didn't havde it when I got home. Anyway, onwards to BJ's to get the new tires mounted. Went to Pier 1 while waiting. Picked up the tires, came home and put the sumer tires on and took off the snows. Bolted the new toolbox to the trailer, and now it's dinner time...
  15. well im sure there is a link some where for this? but being not to good at the computer age. i have no idea where to look? so im going to ask the good pepole here.. im working on the venture doing tires rotor and brakes. well front tire came of nice. but. do you have to remove the back fender and the right muffler? it looks like the axle wont come out with out removing the muffler?
  16. Well I need to get new tires for the venture before riding season really gets into full swing, anyhow as a former auto tech with lots of tools, I'm considering borrowing a bike jack and attempting to at least remove the wheels myself and taking them to the dealer to get changed and balanced or another option is to take the wheels to a friend of mine and have him change them, it would be cheaper but he doesn't have a balancer he just puts the weights back in the same location, which I'm not to keen on. My main concern is I'm not real confident on removing the wheels and doing this, I'm afraid of doing something wrong, and with only having two wheels under you it's quite intimidating. No problems with the cars, just not real familiar with the bike issue. I've done other maint. but not something of this magnatude. I was going to just take the bike to my friends place but he has had some problems in the past and I hate to admit it, but I'm not to confident in his mechanical abilities compared to myself. I guess what I'm trying to say is he doesn't pay to much attention to what he is doing. So any advise would be helpful. Other's that have done this job, how did it go? Thanks...
  17. Rode the bike into work tonight for the first time with the Avon Tires and the lowering kit removed.......all I gotta say is WOW! The bike rode good before, but the tires are unbelieveable! Well worth the money. I cruised I-95 at about 75 and felt like I was on air. Can't wait until I get off in the morning so I can ride home. Thanks for pointing me toward the AVON's fellow VentureRiders! :dancefool::dancefool: Ben
  18. I have a 1996 Royal Star that I just purchased and I need to replace the front tire. The bike is blue & white and currently has Dunlop D404 white wall tires, that really look good. I spoke to a local Yamaha dealer yesterday and they recommended the Elite 3, but that was mainly becuase I told them I did not care if it was a WW, I just wanted something that would have excellent traction in both dry/wet pavement. Have been reading reviews of tires on the internet and on this forum and now I am totally frustrated. I have pretty much decided that I want to replace it with a WW tire, so I will have to select from the Dunlop 404, Metzler Marathon 880 and Avon Venom.......so, I would like the opinions of those that have experience with any of these 3 tires. What do you think?

    Metal Valve Stem..

well, i lucked out while mounting my tires, and i've got metal valve stems.. problem is i can't measure the pressure in the tires because all of my pressure tools don't have long enough depressors to check the pressure. any ideas? i'm toying with the idea of seeing if they simply screwed the schrader in too far, or replace the schrader with a longer one, but i'm not positive that'll work.

    Tires

Hey I don't want to start a tire debate with this one, I went to my stealer while a friend of mine had his tire put on his GW why he didn't bring it here and use my jack I don't know, to change the tire was 70.00 5 bolts and the tire drops down... So the parts guy told him to keep his eye open in April they will run a sale on Metzler tires, I said what about E's or avon, then reach across the counter shook my hand and said good luck with them, they are the internet king of tires, blah blah, then as I look around, I said oh I get you don't have them in stock and you don't sell them... Here was the kicker for me, How much to change the my tire out "rear" he said 135.00. Sounds good to me what kind of tire...No that is labor only, so might open me a shop changing tires at less rate and in 2 yrs retire...They are nuts on that price
  21. Ok, I have read some of the input on the Shinko tires, but they are somewhat dated, does anyone have any more feedback on them, mileage, handling, pros, cons.......looking to buy tires for both bikes and having trouble getting the tires I want at MotorcycleProShops, cant order via internet, and keep getting voice mail when I call......and they have the best prices around.............
  22. I have a `97 Ford F250HD w/287k on the clock..... question is, The front tires are leaning in at the top.... how do I tell if its upper and lower ball joints or what?? I just put new tires on it so need to fix this asap, like today.... just hoping its not King pins. I have never had to do any front end repairs on it, so it probably really needs it with the miles I got on it. Thinking about just changing the ball joints out any way, as they are probably shot, it tracks straight when I let go of the wheel, and I don`t hear anything making noise.... any help would be great.. Thanks
  23. Good afternoon everyone, I am about to change the set of tires for the first time on my 2008 Venture. I have read so much on which tire to choose, i really need some advice. The local bike shop tells me the Michilen Commander tires are a big seller for him and his customers love them. Most of his customers are Harley owners. He is giving me a good price on them but I just dont know how they will handle on my Venture. He sells other brand names and has no problem selling me what I ask for. I know alot of you have experience in this area and have used many different tires. My question is: How do the Michilen tires perform on a Venture and what could I expect out of them in mileage and performance? Thanks for your advice!
  24. Has anyone put Vmax wheels and tires on their VR? Is there any potential problems? Inquiring minds want to know . . . Thanks!
  25. How do you tell the speed rating for trailer tires? Easy enough on car tires, but can't seem to find info. for trailer tires. Been looking at doing the harbour freight mod. They have a black one now for $280 and in my AAA magazine got a 20% coupon. Has 12 inch tires, but interested to know what the speed rating is. Also been checking out 13" rims on e-bay. Didn't think cars used tires that small but apparently they do. Would be ideal to me to swap out tires for 13" car tires. That would leave any doubt about the speed rating.
