1. I swapped out the stock shield for the clearview..not sure if this caused this adverse condition or if it was always there. Anyway, I got tired of air blowing up beside the tank hitting me in the chest and helmet (alot of buffeting). I got the knee protectors from Buddy Rich and with the help of a heat gun and some 3m tape, I came up with these. After six months, I love them. They don't block all the air but they do block bout 75% of it, creating a much smoother ride, but still enough air to stay comfortable. They don't block any air to the engine compartment. To give you an example of what I'm talking bout, at 60 mph hold your hands palm down along side of fuel tank in front of your knees....RSV's may not experience this.
2. Does anyone have a suggestion for making the tank cover not pop out of the front holder on a 1st gen? This has happened a few times and it is a little distracting when it does this. It only does it around 90+ mph. I will help those that have the obvious answer, stay within the speed limit. I know that one, but it cuts into the fun factor. Gary
3. Jeff; So not to take away from your headlight thread I started this one for the Aux Gas Tank. NO NO the rear end; as in Frame work doesn't have to come off just the tour pac and body & running boards if you have them. The rear end ( pumpkin ) it self may have to be lowered ( basically removed, and sit down with axles still attached like putting in the drive shaft ) to do the welding there, but maybe not too. That could be done with asbestos blankets laid across the rear end. As simple as it looks it was done in a sort of complicated way. Meaning for an installer, it has to come off before the kit can be installed, and they supper locktited the mounts to the tank side, and you have to bend the rubber stand offs to the point of breaking loose to get the tank out of the frame to put the kit on the bike, and then go through it again to install the tank. I was able to break loose the stand offs, and eliminate 90% of that part. I think that there has been a retro fit of a couple from this board if I remember right, but haven't heard too much about it. This board is a little slow with activity compared to other boards, but the Quality of the threads makes up for that.
4. any one have this happen? went out for a short ride as im still healing. was ridding down main street in a little town after a 40 mile ride. Dianne was with me i hit the throtle and poof bike stoped? ok coast over to the wendys parking lot. shut key off turned it back on tank showed one bar? while on side stand. i took it off the side stand it showed 2 bars on the fuel gage. would not start? ok i carry a one gallon gas can in top trunk. gas staion right next to wendys thank god as its hot out today. i got one gallon of gas and the bars didnt move on the fuel gage? hit the starter and vroom it fired right up. went over and filled the tank. bars are at the top. took 4.5 gallons total to fill it thats with the one gallon gas can i allready put in. the petcock is stuck so i dont dare try and move it. from the looks of the petcock it looks like its on RES?. never had this happen before and allways got around 40mpg. when the bike ran good. looks like im now pulling 34 mpg?
5. OK, this could be something that I did but I'll put as much information in here as possible. I have a coolant leak, usually after riding the bike and it gets hot, looks like it is coming from the right side (looking forward of the radiator). I'm having some trouble tracking the leak down. The radiator itself always stays completly full. In fact if the bike is cold and I remove the cap fluid will come out. The temp when riding always stays right in the middle of the green after it warms up. The overflow tank is empty, and I just filled it to the proper level a few weeks ago after I changed the radiator fluid. There was a slow leak from the drain plug but I replaced the gasket under that and it isn't coming from there. The puddle is a little forward and left of where that puddle was! Both ends of the overflow tank hose are connected (assuming it connects right under the cap of the radiator), so it isn't disconnected. Here are the items I think may be an issue, I was wondering if I could get some help on where to start looking. - Overflow tank hose has a crack. - Overflow tank itself has a crack. - When I changed the coolant I wasn't exactly sure if the knob you turn (I believe they called it a drain diverter or something) got put back in the correct spot. I couldn't find the writing they talked about. Not sure if this would cause a leak. Thanks for any help you can give. Let me know if you need some pictures I can go snap some. I'm trying to get everything buttoned up as best I can before our first trip on the bike this weekend.
6. There is a Hopnel tank bib for the RSV on ebay. Its "sold" by big bike parts. I need this item but it wouldnt arrive in time before we leave for Potato Creek. Actually there are several available through various sites once I googled them. Is anyone willing to buy the thing for me, take it to Potato Creek and I would pick it up there and hand over the cash. Its around 55 bucks. Thanks
7. I'm not a beginner at mechanics exactly just new to working on RSV. I haven't done my own maintenance for a long time but there isn't any place close to take the bike any more so...here I go again. OK, now the question. Do you need to remove the tank to check the spark plugs? I was looking to see if you can get to them with the tank on and I didn't see how. I check the service manual and it didn't say to remove the tank. Did I miss something?
8. I have an'02 midnight venture can someone out there tell me what the surge tank actually does?
9. So, there I was today riding over to one of my favorite BBQ joints on one of the Texas Farm-to-Market roads doing 70, when I get a face-full of my '83 VR false tank cover. Managed to grab it before it went sailing, and apparently the small ABS "tab" under the gas tank filler cap had failed. It had vibrated forward until it became un-clipped from the front attach point. Good thing I had a roll of duct tape in the saddlebag. Does anyone happen to have a good "permanent" fix for that little sucker??
10. I just purchaased a 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale. My questions are...1. Is there a reserve tank? 2. If there is, how do you activate it? Thanks JC in MN
11. After my 'deer hunting' incident, where the deer's head had wrapped around my forks and put a baseball size dent (about 2" deep) in the right side of the tank, I talked to a couple of body shops and 'paintless' dent repair places. None seemed to want to do the job, so frustrated went on-line and found a couple of ideas. The first item http://www.ehow.com/how_6462615_use-dent-motorcycle-gas-tank.html was using heat and liquid CO2 to pop the dent. Went to Staples and got a 4-pak of dust-off and borrowed the old-lady's hair dryer. After about 3 cans of air the dent had come out at least half way. Then I attacked it with my Dent King kit which I already had. http://www.ehow.com/how_2098332_repair-dent-motorcycle-tank.html Working from the 12 O'clock position and going around a few times (12, 3, 6, etc.) the rest of the dent came out . Saved big $$$'s and got the satisfaction of doing myself .
12. I have been gone for quite awhile...work, injuries, weather... But now I have the bike, 83 VR, out for the first time since winter. Where to start??? Problems, problems, problems. Didn't have the time or energy so I had a local shop do a much needed valve adjustment. Bike ran pretty good on the way home. Kreem'd the tank when I got home...last years highway shutdown will not happen again. New fuel filter installed, of course. After installing the tank and firing it up I now can not get the bike to run right. Bike idles but wants to stall when given throttle. Feather it quickly and build rpms to 3000+ and it takes off like a rocket. If on a hill it seems to have more trouble wanting to take off from a stand still, no torque. I have previously done the 5bikes washer treatment to the carbs. Diaphrams are crinkled but hole free. I just ran a full seafoam treatment and this did not make a difference... yet. I adjusted the pilot screws from one and a half turns out to three and a half turns to get the bike to be somewhat rideable. I have noticed some cracks in my intake manifolds...done nothing with that yet. Carbs have been sync'd as good as possible. Bike has always had a slight hesitation at throttle but nothing that really bothered me till now. At speed now it seems to be a little rough. Let me just say I know enough about mechanics to cause myself some expensive repairs later. I truely do not know what to look at next. Can anybody point me in the right, logical direction on what to check next.
13. Last Friday (5/28) I rode up to Door Cty, WI for family's annual Memorial Day cookout for my wife's B-Day. Just so happend that Curt (fjr rider) and the Venturer's were camping up there in Bailey's Harbor, so I stopped by to say hi. Around 6:30PM the wife called for me to get home for dinner, so bid the group bye and took off. Was running Rte. 57 across peninsula to Sister Bay and decided to avoid traffic, so jumped on Old Stage road. Had just hit 4th gear @ 60MPH when..WHAM, a couple hundred lb. doe hits me from the left. Held the bars straight, listening to the sound of Crunching metal, then the deer fell away and I brought Matilda to a stop. Got my wits about me and walked back about 1/4 mi. to where the first pieces were on the road. Found the doe about 700 ft. from the point of impact, Very dead and too heavy for me to put on the back saddle (damn, wanted to cook that sucker). Back at the bike, loaded the parts in saddle bag and rode 3mi. to the house (don't they say most accidents happen Saturday morning uncovered her and got the tools out. Pried the front fender tip off the tire, cut turn signal wires, and bent left wind-wing support out a bit. A couple of low speed test runs on our road, all seemed fine so headed to Fish Creek to find the group. Stopped at a winery and was showing the damage, when Steve said, "what about your tank?". The head or front hooves had put a softball sized dent at the tank badges. No wonder my right calf was still hurting!! I'm just amazed how well built these bikes are - no fork problems even after wrapping a deer around them. So...anybody got a good used tank .
14. Has anyone had any experience of moving the drivers intercom plug from the tank? Does it have enough cable to go under the tank near the seat and how do you savely get the plug seating unglued from the tank? Thanks for any help.
15. Anyone have any ideas where to get a tank panel/tuxedo/tie (call it what you will) with a pocket that'll fit a '97 Royal Star Tour Classic?
16. Saw a Kaw today. A 1969 120 with chrome fenders and red and white I think. Been in basement for years. Lot of surface rust on chrome but think it would clean. Tank is crap but it is getting enough fuel thru it to fire. Tries but won't run. Be a good project. What is it worth???
17. Replacing the coolant, filled to the top of radiator, ran it, let it cool, filled to top again, ran it, still needs more. How do you know when you do not need anymore? When the coolant gets hot, I assume it bubbles to the overflow tank under the seat, but how does the coolant in the overflow tank get back to the radiator? there is only 1 tube to the overflow tank.
18. will allow you to input your own routes? most threads have comments about the turn by turn voice directions. i like mapping out my own route and would like to download that into a GPS. Then get the turn by turn directions without having to look at the tank bag window.
19. long story boring ,the wife and i have rented a GW GL1500 Aspencade for 10 days, for our trip back to Scotland . so i'd like to know from some of you Wingers, about the range of these bikes, on a full tank of gas (petrol). the owner says its a small tank but it gets around 250 miles . now im thinking thats pretty good but i'd like to know if thats about right .we're gonna be traveling in mostly rural areas(single track roads mainly) ,down to Yorkshire then back up to the Western Isles ,Skye and Lewis . so in the grand scheme of things that aint that many miles, but if youve ever seen some of these areas ,theres a lot of scenery(and rain) but not much else.not good places to run out of gas(petrol) .so any and all info etc would be appreciated.
20. Talked with Hannigan Motor Sports this morning about the auxiliary fuel tank they will be offering for their trike conversion kit. It is still in R&D and no date is available as to when it will be available. The tank will be 5 gallons. It will be placed under the passenger seat and a filler nozzle nearby with key The unit will not be a gravity fed unit and will have a pump and switch. The price with be just under 700.00 and does not include installation.
21. Is there any aftermarket add ons that will give me an actual fuel gauge without having to drill a hole in my tank? I hate having nothing else than the idiot light.
22. Mini Tank Cover,A soft leather cover that attaches at the base of the gas tank Here its costs $76 out the door Any wher cheaper in the States You'd know
23. Can a tank bag be put on a 2009 RSV?
24. I have a whole set of fenders, wheels, side covers and tank plus alot of misc. parts off my 96 Royal Star. I have another set I had custom painted and don't need these now. They are blue and white. The tank is new and has a decal I designed on it. Before I put this stuff on EBay I thought I would let the club know. I will sell it all for $375 plus freight. I will be selling individual parts on EBay so this is a deal. Reno 715-459-2570 pixx@charter.net
