  1. I've read a couple of existing posts about fuel gauges, so I think I need to replace the sensor inside the tank. But, let me give a few details and see what y'all think. I have a 99 RSV that has under 1000 miles on it. Was sitting in some garage in pieces and put back together by the person I purchased it from. I replaced the main wiring harness b/c the person who took it apart in the first place did some stupid, nasty stuff to the wiring. Well, once I got it electrically working, and had the carbs rebuilt, there is still this odd fuel level reading issue. I DO get the yellow light telling me my tank is low, but my fuel level never reads anything but a blinking single bar after fill-up. I've pulled apart the connector under the black tank cover and put it back together, giggled it around a bit, and no change. Should I replace the whole piece inside the gas tank (4 screws, rotate it a bunch till it pulls out)? Thanks! - Michael
  2. I'm kinda bummed. The biggest thing is that my gas tank started a slight rust last year when I did my 83/86 Frankenbike. I've been dealing with it all season. The rust dust in the fuel will accumulate in my carb bowls until there's enough to foul my carbs and they start running like crap. I'm sick of blowing & draining my carbs regularly. After I clean them out, my Venture runs like a raped ape! I did put a couple of filters in line just before the carbs, and that lasted quite a while. Ultimately I'm sure I'll need to pull the gas tank (UUuugh!!) and clean it out/coat it. I bought a fuel filter that will filter down to 10 microns and I'll probably be installing that today so I can ride for another month or two despite the cold temps. I did some research on the web, and I think the rust dust varies between 5 and 200 microns. We'll see how that goes. My Vboost is totally awesome! The weather is all gray. It's supposed to snow this weekend. Down at the local Honda Powerhouse, there is a '98 Valkerie with 50K miles for 5 grand. I wish I had the money...I've always loved the Valkeries... Doug
  3. Is anyone making these now. I got the original one from the guy in FL and there is a hole worn through it. If someone wants to attempt it I could send the old one to them.
  4. Looking for a stock narrow "Tank Cover part#4XY-2171A-00-00" without any pouches. Does anyone have one just laying around that you've removed when upgrading to a leather one with pockets ??? If it's the right price, I'll pay shipping costs. Thanks, Mike
  5. I'm about to put my new-2-me 2000 RSV away for the winter and wanted to know if there was anything in particular you guys do when winterizing your scooters? I plan on taking the battery into the house, and running the carbs dry, draining the bowls, Is there anything else I should be watching for? Do I need to remove the gas tank to get at the carb drain plugs? Oh yes, I put a good wallop of Fuel conditioner into the tank and ran it for a good 10 minutes so the fuel hit the carbs. Cheers, D.W.
  6. Dealer just completed warranty on the 07 RSV replacing the cylinder head gaskets front and rear. I have found what appears to be a vacumm hose disconnected beneath the fuel tank. I can't tell where the rear connects, however the forward end of tube is long enough to reach the air cleaners and perhaps more. Idle is not smoothe and there is a vibration getting up to higher rpm's. Once you reach mid to high rpm's it smoothes out. Mechanic stated it is a vent tube and stuffed it back under the tank. The end of the hose physically is expanded and looks to have had a clamp on it originally He did a carb sync and it seems only slightly better. Next step is to remove the tank myself and determine where the hose originates on the connected end and go from there. I don't see specifics on the vent tubes in the service manual, however I may be missing something. Note: The checked the valve adjustment at this time as well, 30K, and stated all were within spec. It was running great before their having worked on it. Appreciate any suggestions/guidance here.
  7. I've recently purchased a 99 RSV and had to replace the main wiring harness. Well, I've been successful at that job, but when I took the fuel tank off the right front bolt that mounts the tank to the frame had been broken off by the former owner. I managed to get the broken bolt out of the frame. But, when I bought a replacement bolt and tightened the tank back on, my bolt also broke before it was tightened on the tank. So, the threads inside the frame are obviously royally screwed up. Any insight into whether this is a replaceable piece or will I need to re-thread the existing mount? If replaceable, any idea what the part number would be and/or where I would find it? Thanks! - Michael

    need help

we are in michigan for the weekend and twice yesterday a vacuum built up in the gas tank and the bike quit while going down the road. I pulled the rubber vent hose off the top of the tank and blew through it and it is not plugged. trying to blow through the nipple on the top of the tank does not seem to be letting air in but the hole is very small. I can't say for sure if it is plugged and can't find anything small enough to push through the hole. any suggestions. got lucky yestday and the bike did not shut off going down 75. if anyone has any suggestions on how to check the vent let me know.
  9. A while back, I had an issue with the bike not running. I was pretty sure it was the fuel pump, but turned out to be bad gas and plugged filter/line. Once again, the bike died on me less than a mile after leaving the house. This time it acted like it was hitting only 2 or 3 cyls. Check the pump, good. Checked the filter, good. Drained 1 qt of fuel from tank with reserve selected, good. My conclusion is it is either something in the tank occasionally blocking the fuel flow thru the petcock or a clogged jet. This last time it died, I could start it back up and it would run very rough. After about 5 minutes, it was like nothing was wrong. Tank and a half of fuel and a can of SeaFoam, it is running well. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
  10. Anyone have a good method of draining the gas tank on a MKII?
  11. I took the week off to ride around. It's been beautiful in WI this week and I've put about 1000 miles on the bike just putzing around. No serious rides, just here and there with no real purpose. It's been fun. Anyway, my travels today took me to my local dealer. My sales guy was interested in taking a look at the mods to my bike (flanders bars, Road King exhaust being the main ones he was interested in). Well, I was getting ready to leave and backed out of the stall and noticed a wet spot where I'd been parked. I said, "well at least I'm in the right place for a leak to start!!!" So, they pulled the bike into the shop and took a peek. The tech looked it over and said it was coming from the overflow hose on the gas tank. That has never happened before and I've got just over 10,000 miles on the bike and have been in the exact same situation many times before - i.e. warm day with a half tank of fuel. That leads me to two questions which I was hoping to get some thoughts on. First, as long as I've owned the bike I've never had a leak from that hose. Why now? I could completely understand if I over filled the tank but that wasn't the case with only a half a tank. Second and more importantly, the liquid that was coming out of the hose smelled like gas but had the consistency of oil. Any ideas? I asked the tech about it and he said if I'd never experienced a leak before from that hose, who knows what was in it when the fuel started coming out. Huh!!! That didn't make any sense to me at all so I thought I'd better ask all you experts. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank, Les
  12. i was thinking about a magnetic tank bag. i was going to mount three plates of metal to the underside of my false tank cover. but then, got to thinking, i remounted the tci to the air box. will the magnets mess with it? any thoughts? has anyone tried this?
  13. Hi I just purchased a 1986 Yamaha Venture Royale 1300. Apparently the ex-owner had not screwed down the gas tank cover and it flew off. So need to replace it. The bike is beige. 1) Does anyone have a tank cover for sale (in beige would be perfect!) 2) Does a tank cover from a 1200 Venture Royale fit a 1300 Venture Royale? Thanks!
  14. HI all. A buddy i ride with has an 07 V Star Classic 1100 and is having a problem. After about 90 - 100 miles of riding or when it gets to about a half tank of fuel the bike loses power like its starving for fuel. If he stops and fuels up the problem goes away that is until the fuel runs down to about half tank. So what do you think?? I had him try seafoam because seafoam cures all but with no luck. Thanks. Bill
  15. Just curious, who won (or traded for) the tank bibs from Nanci at Cody? Maybe putting it on a RSTD?
  16. I had rust issues with my gas tank a couple years back so I took the dive and tore the bike down and did a reseal using the Caswell epoxy treatment. That was a new product for me to use and I wondered about the long term results. I've had some failures before with other products. Every spring I pull the sending unit to inspect the tank and it has always looked fine. It's like a Thermos bottle inside with the epoxy. But I figured the true test would be the fuel filter itself. So while I was changing plugs the other day I changed the fuel filter. So with a bit over 12,000 miles since the last filter change I was happy for find NO sediment in the filter at all. Nada. That was a first. So if anyone is considering treating their fuel tank........ Go for it. The long term benefits are worth it. Not a single carb issue since the treatment. It's worth the time, effort and money to get it over and done with. Mike
  17. I thought I had a 6 gal tank on my 01 RSV but when it reaches the point where I have to out it on reserve it only takes me 4.5 gals to fill it up. Also what kind of gas mileage do you all get? Thanks
  18. Can anyone point me in the direction to find a fuel tank cover for a 07 tour deluxe. The OEM schmatics dont list it or I cant find it. Will the Venture cover fit.?
  19. hello i just got a call from my friend dianne up in north dakota. she said last night she filled up her gas tank then put it in the garage to get ready for a ride today. well she went inside to start up the bike and saw the tank looked like someone caved it in.? she is upset as i would be too she hopes this would be coverd under her warrenty? she bought the bike last year vstar model. i tould her to call the place down here where she bought it then go to a local dealer up there im sure they will replace the tank. the poor woman is in tears. she said she cant even find one on ebay in good condition and close to her silver/black color.
  20. I turned my bike on yesterday and the driving lights wouldn't come on at all. The dealer did the install back last December and they didn't put the switch in as per the Yamaha instructions. I'm almost certain that the fuse inside the faring is blown and that I have a pinched wire either in the centre of the bar mount or when the bike is swung all the way out in one direction. I did notice that on the right hand side when I swing it out to expose it, that a blue wire looked pinched. Today I purchase all of the necessary parts to install a relay and a switch. I have been reading lots of the posts on this subject and my one question at this point is do I have to take the gas tank off in order to do this? One post with pictures says that the gas tank has to be removed. Has anyone installed a relay and a switch without having to remove the gas tank? Thank you in advance Chris
  21. Just moved up to 08 Venture from V Star 1300, Like moving from a Chevy to a Cadillac. Just wondered if you need to remove riders seat and gas tank to change spark plugs? If removing tank is it a easy procedure? On oil change any alternative to the expensive Yamalube? Like the Venture, took a while to adjust to the additional weight and winding shaft noise but overall happy. I know we are having a hot summer especially in the midwest but it seems this bike puts lots of heat out by the floorboards compared to other bikes. Thanks for any help and happy trails.
  22. With my girlfriend starting a new temp job last night and 47 degree celcius temperatures (with humidity) it was best to stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning. What else to do but something bike related. :-) I put together the following chart based on my experiences, Yamaha specs, magazine articles, and member experiences. The figures are based on a "stock" RSV with normal fuel tank and un-corrected odometer. I've also taken into consideration what the "real" main tank capacity differences are from spec (0.5 U.S. gallons) in calculating maximum distance and "real" total fuel capacity. Some numbers don't total up due to rounding. I've wondered just how far I can go on a tank of fuel, or gotten to the point where I was wondering if I could make it to the next gas station before I ran out of fuel and would have to walk. Hopefully this table is helpful to others. NOTE - "Low Fuel distance travelled" counter comes on at inconsistent points because of leaning the bike into a corner when you are low on fuel. Once it starts the count down it stays on. The low fuel indicator light goes on and off depending on the lean of the bike.
  23. Logo came off and broke..need one or two if anyone has any..out ov warrent 06 RSTD. Ron
  24. Got a question about the fuel tank on my '91 VR. The problem is I don't have the owner's manual. I'm rather anal about performance and I'd really like to know what I'm getting for fuel mileage. To do that I need to keep an accurate tally of how many gallons I pump, but I can't do that if I don't know when the tank is actually "Full." For example, I can "fill up," stop pumping, and then watch the fuel level drop slowly. Another squirt and I get the same thing. I know there is an over flow tank involved here, but I have no idea when to stop pumping gas. FWIW, I filled up last night and the bike is getting approximately (Oh how I HATE that word....) 33 MPG around town. This is riding 2-up with a Voyager Kit.... Any help will be greatly appreciated
  25. I saw this on another site, and it looked like fun. Since we are all riding now, and seeing all the sites. When you come across a tank, stop and get a pic of your bike with one. I was going through Redfield SD yesterday and I came across this one....
