  1. Sunday I stopped for gas, and the bike wouldn't start with a buzzing noise. A push start later, and I was home. Of course, it started right up. This morning, I just got buzzing again. I've heard variously that it could be the starter solenoid or the starter relay. I just can't interpret the manual and the posts here as to where these are? Under the battery? Can someone kindly point me where it is? What does it look like? Dave
  2. I have been working on the PCW clutch upgrade on my 2006 RSV with 42,000 miles. I road to work, then Iron Pony after work to pick up oil filter and oil. Bike has been running great minus the slipping clutch. I honestly dont know if my clutch upgrade worked or not because after I had put everything back together I turn the key to on and before I could hit the starter button the bike fired up on its own. NEVER done that before. I decided to take the battery cables off for a few minutes. Put them back on turned the key to one and the damn thing fires on its own again. The entire time the starter motor is running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. I have an 06 Venture. Got on the bike yesterday and get 1 click at the starter. I charged the battery and still the same 1 click. Took the battery in and it checks out as good and fully charged. Checked battery connections and still only one click at the starter. Everything else works, lights are bright and etc. I am not sure where to look for the problem. Any advise is appreciated.
  4. Hi guys, i have a 1300 from 1990 and when i try to start it, it won't turn over. i have checkt the battery and need to by replaced (broken). when i try to jump start it whit an external battery the cables come very hot and smoking, but still the starter will only turn once or twice and very havy and slow. any ideas before i go shopping? thnx, Ice
  5. Looking for a MKII starter motor as i believe they have 4 brushes instead of the stock two in 83. thank you very much -CJ
  6. I just finished installing a 2nd gen starter on my 1st gen 86 VR. It clearly solved the slow cranking. I cant say that I enjoyed the job. It wasn't a difficult job but you have to remove a lot of parts to get to the starter. I purchased new O-rings for the connections at the thermostat housing. Is a good idea to lube the rings with anything to help with reassembly and sealing? Maybe water soluble Vaseline or silicone?
  7. OK, I am going to preface this by saying that other than a Suzuki GT550, I've never had an electric starter system apart...every other bike I've owned is either kick only or the electric starter system never gave me a problem, so I don't know how, or have any real frame of reference as to how the electric leg works on the Venture. When I thought that the ignition pickups were bad (they aren't) I took off the generator cover and 2 shafts and 3 gears fell out. Naturally, I had 5 separate pieces on the floor instead of 2 assemblies. I put the pieces back in in what seems to me to be the logical way and I looked at the microfiche, but it's not 100% obvious as to the correct order that the parts install. Attached is a picture of how I reinstalled the gears. With no gears installed, the starter driven gear on the back of the rotor spins freely in 1 direction only as I figured that it would. With the gears installed as per the picture, I can't easily spin the driven gear in either direction, but it appears that this arrangement is the only way that everything lines up. Did I put this back together correctly or am I about to cost myself some serious money? Thanks, Jeff http://www.3cyl.com/jeff/starter%20gears.jpg
  8. This has happened to me a few times during the past month... Riding along at various speeds, the bike suddenly just dies. There is never any warning, doesn't cough or anything. One second everything is cool and the next it is just not running. Everything electrical (lights, stereo etc.) still functions. After coasting to the side of the road, I can hit the starter and it turns over, but doesn't fire at all. Then I hit the starter a second or third time and it fires right up. Very weird. The bike has just shy of 80,000 miles on it. All suggestions and ideas are very much appreciated. Cheers, Dan

  11. First of all I just want to say hey! second I was wondering where would be the cheapest place to find a starter for a 84 venture royale? Mine is totally fried! had a low battery and fried the armature trying to start it. Oops!
  12. Just ordered the leveling links from diamond r, she said they would be on friday. Can't wait to try them. Only thing is I have the 130 tyre on the front, hope its not to quick till I can get a 150.For a month now when I press the starter button, the lights dim and I can here the starter relay click. After I press it several times it starts right like nothing is wrong. RSV is an 07. Do you think it is the battery, starter button, or starter switch ? tew47
  13. When I was 16 I had a big Yamaha 650 (I think it was 650) it was Red and White and it did not have a strater button it had a lever with a cable that went down to the starter. Does anyone know the model or the year I would like to find one to restore.
  14. Hi, I modified my starter to add the recommended ground wire from the brushplate to the motor case. Much improvement is obvious after one day of riding. I am really looking forward to not having to plan my stops against how hard it will be to restart when the motor is hot (even though I got pretty adept at using drive throughs, rather than turning the bike off). Thanks all for the insights and benefit of the collective experience! Brian
  15. On my return from St Judes I stopped for gas. Went to start the bike, and when I hit the starter button, the starter just kind of started, then stopped, then the bike fired up. Next gas stop...Filled up, reset my trip odometer, pulled over for a break. Went to start the bike, and the same thing happened again. Made one more stop on the way home to add clothing...same thing again. Got home, turned off the bike, went to check the total mileage for the trip, both trip odometers read 0...and clock time was off. Next day put a voltmeter on it. 13.75 volts, turn key on, 12.5 volts...driving lights are on....hit starter button, 8.5 volts. The voltage drops seem considerably high. Tried it with the driving lights off and it didn.t make a lot of difference. Bike runiing is 14 volts so it is charging. The bike still starts fine, but am I looking at a near future problem???
  16. My 1999 RSV has had a lot of work done to it since I purchased it last year. The original owner let it sit for a couple of years. Upon going through it I had to repair wiring in the fairing due to mice as well as replace air filters with the same problem (MICE). I had the carbs rebuilt and synched..replaced all worn parts along with all the fluids, new tires, brakes amongst add-ons. I relayed the passing lights and installed a mic-mute along with a GPS. I also put a small fuse block in for the accessories with a relay. Everything is on ignition hot. I replaced the battery with a new fully charged one. It has been on for about two months. Yesterday I get it out for a ride and when I went to start it, it wouldn't..I hadn't ridden it for two weeks or so and a keep a battery tender on it. It fires up usually on the first hit of the switch.. It seems as though the battery didnt have enough juice to start it. I used another battery to jump start it and it started just fine. I rode it for about 40 miles to a friends house. When I tried to restart, the same thing. Had to jump it again. Once it fires, it runs great. I brought it back home and cut it off. I waited a few and it fired right back up only it was a little weak. Checked the battery and it was 12.9 volts. A few minutes later no start...So my question is battery, starter, stator, starter relay? I also have an oil leak that only drips after I have ridden it for a while. It quits after a few drops. Comes from the left side but cant find its origin...Thoughts? The help is greatly appreciated...
  17. Hello, I finally got my 83 Venture running well enough to ride. Rode to work Saturday. All went well. Got home and went to leave again, Hit the starter button and nothing. No crank, headlight goes out, and gauge lights dim. It will start and run if I jump the starter solinoid contacts. I took my starter switch apart and cleaned the contacts but it made no difference. I found a guide on cleaning the switch by Dingy (old thread from 2009). I noticed that in picture 12, the switch contact pad looks like it is raised. Mine is completely flat/smooth. Would this keep it from making contact? Also, if i flip the kill switch on and off, I can hear a relay switching, so it seems like the kill switch is good. I havent had time to do the tests on the switch yet. I just saw what looked like a possibility. Any thoughts?
  18. Since I had the brilliant idea to change jobs and am now working nights, it sure would be nice to have a reliable starting bike in the mornings when it gets cold out there. When it gets cold she acts like a car with a dead battery, makes a half hearted attempt to turn over and stops, it'll do that again when I hit the starter button again. Then if i hook up the charger to jump it it'll turn just fine, still hard to start though. It has done this since I've owned it. battery is good upgraded battery cables starter contact was clean and dry but I pulled it loose and sanded the cable, washer and nut. 12.67V with ignition off 11.7V with ignition on 10.6V with starter engaged 13.37V with 2000RPM Like I said, don't want to be sitting in the parking lot at 0630 when I'm dead tired and not be able to start the bike when it's 30 degrees out there. I do have a set of louvered inserts I can slip into the side panels if anyone thinks that'll help. Thanks in advance
  19. Well, I think my starter is getting tired. I get a slow hot crank mostly and I sometimes get a slow cold crank, but def. slower when hot. I read somewhere that the ventures have a two brush starter and the vmax has a 4 brush starter. I guess I could take mine apart and clean it but it would probably just be easier go get another used one, tune it up and throw it in and keep spares.
  20. Rode to Houston from Corpus Christi on Satuday to pick up some parts for another bike in the stable. Starter crapped out again, a welcomed push start from a group of amassed Patriot Guard Riders in a Walmart parking lot got me on the road again (Hey, works great if you let the bike sit for an hour, this is # 3 starter by the way). Another cracked armature, I'm sure. I couldn't shut the bike off while fueling, and later while being ticketed for 4 MPH over the posted limit in Port Lavaca (Labor Day weekend, no mercy ya' know). The officer was livid about that, but finally gave in when I asked if he would help me push start the bike. OK, Iv'e reaped cheap long enough, drove to San Antonio today and bought a GL1800. One well used 87 venture for sale, about 3K in it over the last three years, Ignatech igniter (bought it two years ago when it was the hot topic and mine had failed, God bless them Croations), new metering needles and seats, choke plungers, diaphrams, starter rollers, E-3's, updated brakes, Progressive springs, Franks forks, and that wonderful fork brace, along with all the stuff that was supposed to make this thing charming. BYE BYE. Great site we have here, a wealth of information as I have found, by the same token, you can chrome plate a dog turd, but you still have a dog turd all the same, it's just real shiny. Not bitter, just done with supporting a black hole. If I had one positive thing to say about this old beast, it would be that through it all, it smoked every Harley (and one Boss Mustang) that ever tried to pull the trigger on it. It did have that one redeeming value. God Bless, I will keep my membership intact, just that I will be reading the Wing Forum from here on out..
  21. I'm sure this has been covered, but I thought it bears repeating. My starter cranked very weak. All connections were great and little loss through the solenoid. Skydoc_17 suggested that I install a VMAX starter (4 brush vs. 2 brush), which he sold me at discount (thanks). This Totally solved my problem-period! I read a tutorial somewhere that detailed removing exhaust pipes (it's not that involved and you don't need to disconnect the exhaust)! You DO need to remove the radiator and lower hoses. The bypass tube leading from the thermostat housing and the housing itself (remove the plastic elbow from the water pump and take the entire assembly out). Use new O-rings for everything and use some vasoline to lube them (or something similar). I have a first Gen and I needed to remove the air dam and it was easier with the right side crash bar removed. I spent about 3 hours, but I changed the thermostat and did some other things as well. I should have taken pictures, but that would have cut into my drinking time!
  22. Does anyone know what the resistance reading should be from the starter cable connection to ground. My friend's '82 Yamaha has 0.2 ohms. This seems low to me. Can not find any info on reading in service manual. Frank
  23. I have a 1987 VR that when you hit the starter button there is a whining noise of the starter turning but not fire. Right now it is on the center stand, in neutral, kick stand up, kill switch on position. No change with the clutch held in either. New plugs New wires New TCI New Starter relay New Battery Starter checks good (have used two with no change) Following the troubleshooting guide in the maintenance manual good ohm readings on: Pickup coils Stator Coils Connectors all clean. Craig
  24. Hello I am new here and was wondering if anyone has ever has had a problem with the starter not ever going off? I took my starter switch apart and am unable to figure out how to put it back together also. Even with the starter switch apart it still turns over and will not shut off! Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks you alll so very much in advance.
  25. I haven't dug into the new 88VR yet...(took my wife for a ride today and she likes the ride better than the 83 or 84. One thing I have noticed....when the bike is hot I have NO ISSUES with slow starter syndrome that plagued both the older bikes. Is this probably because the PO fixed something (4 brush starter or 4 gu wire or better ground ala dingy's mod) Or Did they make some changes and improvements to correct the problem at the factory?
