  1. Talking about myself here! The weather in Florida the last few days has been colder than usual. Since the RSTD is kept in the garage over night, I had to use the choke the other morning to get the bike started. After a few minutes of high idle, I pushed the choke in A LITTLE to slow it down. Got on the helmet, climbed on board, and set off for a short trip to the next town for a Dr. visit. I immediately noticed that the bike was not running "right". It was a little sluggish and idled slow. In fact, it even stalled at a traffic light. I thought that maybe the idle had gotten turned down too far somehow so, when I got to my appointment, I turned it up a bit. On my return home, it was still not right. I stopped at a gas station and filled the tank, thinking maybe I got some bad fuel. I started the bike and, for reasons I can't explain, I leaned over and checked the choke knob. IT WAS STILL OUT! No wonder it was running like crap. O.K. you cold weather residents, stop laughing!
  2. I rode to work today my first ride in the dark on the new RSV. the stock light is no where near as bright as i like. what have other members done to correct this issue. what replacment bulb are you using? What light bar are you running? thanks Ken
  3. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egCeIwjIuZM]YouTube - "If My Nose Was Running Money" By Aaron Wilburn[/ame]
  4. Ok this is my first post... I got a 83 XVZ12 for free this summer and it had sat for 5 years.... real nice shape and kept inside, changed the plugs and removed the carbs and cleaned them bled the brakes and clutch drained the gas and fired her up... it has run all summer with no engine problems other than running really warm this is my first bike and i love it BUT a few weeks ago i cut the windshield down and it was running fine other than the previous day it seemed like it was running out of gas (which it was really low) or the filter was pluged (was leaking :aftermarket clear filter) so i cleaned the filter and stopped the leak got gas and then took it out for a test run and it sputtered until the rpms got a little higher then she ran ok about 5 miles into the ride the bike lost power and started running lousy rode back and checked it all over (with an awesome harly mechanic) and found a cylinder went dead.. gas but no spark the spark to the LR cylinder is there when it starts but immediatly fades to nothing or comes in at higher rpms when riding is this the TCI or a coil going? i saw other posts mentioning the TCI what is that and where is that located? i gathered that controls the coils firing... i dont have a manual yet so any help would be really appreciated... the bike had gotten uncovered a couple of times when the wind blew off the cover during a heavy rain... would baking it in the oven help? any ideas?
  5. Can anyone advise on a good place to put some xtra running lights on an 06 midnight venture?
  6. who needs what , make me an offer and what ever you need. bike seems to be all there. paint is faded out .
  7. If you order one of these inspect it very carefully when it arrives. If you are using it as running and brake lights, there should be three (one on each end and in the middle) that light as running lights. There are eight, four on each side that come on as brake lights. I was installing mine today and found out that the eight were never installed on the light board.
  8. Well I got my Road King pipes installed. From the looks of them from the inlet side they are both drilled for stage one. My question is the bike has seemed to have lost a little power and lost acceleration now. Almost like the pipes were clogged up. Also the bike was running smooth as silk before the install and now has a vibration. The HD pipes sound great and the vibration seems to be from the pipes. Is this loss of power and the vibration normal when you change to HD pipes? I had the carbs synced two weeks ago and she was running great. This is the first time I have tried this slip-on swap and don't know what to expect. Moakster:confused24:
  9. 1999 RSV How does a guy make the rear blinkers act as another running light on these things? Thanks for any help. Ross
  10. Has anyone installed LEDs in the 1st gen in place of the 1157 bulbs and if so, what did you use and how do you like it. I found that I have a burnt out running light in my taillight and was thinking about using an LED bulb for them. Thanks, Rick F.
  11. I usually run Shell gasoline in my bike (91 octane by choice only) and the bike runs just fine. Occasionally I will fuel up elswhere but there seems to be a great deal of shell stations around here. However, the last long trip I took (about 800 miles) I used my Mobil credit card and filled up there exclusively the whole trip. I noticed that the further into my trip the more the bike started running rough. I thought it needed new plugs or maybe a tune-up but after running just two tanks of Shell gasoline through it, the bike seems to be running just fine. Has anyone else experienced this or am I all alone? This doesn't happen it my truck or my wife's minivan. Is Mobil fuel of a lower quality?
  12. Ok, This may be a dumb question, but after doing a full tune up this spring, plugs, wires, boots, carb sycn the bike is running pretty good although I may be a bit rich as i do not need the choke to start, but that is a different issue. My question is what does it take to water proof these bikes? If i get caught in the rain I am usually fine for 20 miles or so before the bike starts running rough. If the bike is sitting at work and it rains the bike will be hard starting and run very rough the whole way home. I know that it has to be water getting into something as it will pop and spit until it is up to crusing speed and then it will seem to settle down until you come to the first stop. could it be hairline cracks in the coil packs doing this if they get spashed with water? Any Ideas would be helpful Venturing the wetlands
  13. I've been looking at Motolights over the weekend, and I got's the hots to put a set on my RSV! Anybody running Motolights (stock 35W version) along with the OEM passing lights? I'm thinking my charging system might be challenged but want to hear what others may have to say. I make it out to be an added 5 or 6 amps to add the Motolights. Smokee
  14. I just happened to see this on Ebay. I wonder if it would work on the First Gen Ventures. If so, it looks like a good solution to those who have a problem with the temps running near the read before the fans come on. This one turns on the fans 20 degrees sooner. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-V-max-Cooling-Fan-Switch-Vmax_W0QQitemZ190130673497QQihZ009QQcategoryZ35580QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  15. ok my 84 venture royale is running realy rich. you can smell the raw fuel when its running and mileage is down under 30 MPG. I've been running seafoam through it every other tankfull but it hasn't effected the MPG to much if at all. bike is running great aside from that. I love the bike but currently its costing me more then driveing my car. any idea where i can adjust how much fuel is being dumped into the engine or what ellse I should be doing to improve my MPG issue?
  16. Getting horrible noise through the radio in AM only. FM works fine. When engine isn't running I can't tune in anything clearly, even local station in town is fuzzy but soon as motor's running it's pure noise. Wondering as I start tearing into this problem if anyone has suggestions to check for first? can the noise filter be the problem or plugs? Major issue for me as I listen to AM radio always.
  17. I have a 87 venture and it has been running fine for the last two years. About two weeks ago I went for a ride and it stalled out on me while going about 30-35 mph. It felt like it ran out of gas. I got it started again but had to keep playing with the choke. It did this for about 10 min. then cleared up and ran good. About a mile later it started again.I've had fuse problem before so I checked the fuse box and the ignition felt loose but after playing with it, the bike started and smoothed out. I put a new inline fuse holder in and the bike been running great till today. Today It did the same thing, feels like its out of gas. Starts running rough, no power could not make it up a small hill. I was able to keep starting it and limp to a friends house. Then it just started to run fine again. Road it home around a 15 mile ride with no problem. Any helpful hints or has anyone had the same problem. It was in the 90 here today and thought about vapor locking, but it never had problem on hotter days. Jerry
  18. VMAX Rear End Swap by: Don Nelson Shortly after purchasing my Royal Star Venture in 1999, I realized that 5th gear on these things are very high. At the time, I just accepted it but after a recent trip to Colorado riding two up, pulling a trailer and fighting some heavy headwinds, I made up my mind that I was going to look seriously for a solution. On that trip, I did a little experiment. First I asked a rider of a first gen Venture what kind of RPMs he was running at 70 MPH. He replied that he was running right at 4,000 RPM. When we got back on the road, I checked my tach only to discover that I was actually running exactly 4,000 RPM in 4th gear. When I shifted to 5th, the RPMs went down to about 3200 RPM and I felt that I was really lugging the engine with the load I had and running 70 MPH. So, for a full tank of gas I stayed in 4th gear and was running the 4,000 RPMs. At the next gas stop, I checked with Bob Dakin as to how much gas he put in. Bob also rides an RSV and was running in 5th gear. It turns out that he and I need the exact same amount of gas even though I had been running in 4th gear. I knew then that the only reason I would have used the same gas as him was because that in 4th gear, I was staying in the power band of the engine, not lugging it. Upon returning home, I sent John Furbur and email and found that he does offer a VMAX rear end swap for the RSV. A few days later, my new rear end arrived in the mail and was installed a couple of days later. After getting the rear end installed and taking the bike for a test run, I am pleased to say that it does exactly what I hoped it would. I am now running about 500 RPM higher in every gear. In 5th gear, I now run 3600 RPM rather than the previous 3100 RPM. This is a good compromise between the 4,000 RPM that I had run in 4th gear and the 3100 that I had previously run in 5th. I have not yet had time to take a long enough trip to check the gas mileage again but I really expect to see an improvement when riding two up and especially when pulling a trailer also. Regardless of the fuel mileage though the increase in performance of the bike is enough that I am even willing to sacrifice a couple MPG if that is the case. I have tried various exhausts, K&N filters and the Dyna 3000 Ignition module but none of those have come close to giving me the performance increase as this rear end swap. I promised to do a write-up on the install so here it is. The truth is though, if you have ever pulled your rear end to lubricate the drive shaft, then you have really already done this job. You simply replace the stock rear with the VMAX rear. Very simple job. Since there are already instructions posted for removing the rear wheel, I will start this procedure at the point where the saddle bags, rear wheels and mufflers have already been removed. So here we are at that point. The first thing you will want to do is drain the rear end. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1399%20%28Small%29.jpg Remove the one screw that secures the speedometer sensor to the rear end. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1401%20%28Small%29.jpg After the screw is removed, the speedo sensor just pulls out. There is an O-Ring so you have to pull on it fairly hard. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1402%20%28Small%29.jpg Remove the 4 acorn nuts that secure the rear end to the drive shaft tubes. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1403%20%28Small%29.jpg Slide the rear end off. The drive shaft will come out with the rear end. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1404%20%28Small%29.jpg Here is the assembly removed. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1405%20%28Small%29.jpg You then need to pull the drive shaft out of the rear end. There is nothing it in except for an 0-Ring so you have to pull on it fairly hard but it will come out. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1406%20%28Small%29.jpg There is a spring inserted in the rear end that you will need to remove and insert into the new rear end. It just pulls off so pull it off and install on the new one. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1407%20%28Small%29.jpg http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1409%20%28Small%29.jpg While you have the drive shaft out, now is the time to grease it up before putting it all back together. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1410%20%28Small%29.jpg Install the new rear end with drive shaft. It is recommended that you now install the rear axle, without the wheel, and do the rear end alignment as outlined in the Yamaha TSB. This procedure can be found here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1705 http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1412%20%28Small%29.jpg http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1413%20%28Small%29.jpg Now is a great time to grease the rear drive pins in the wheel hub. See this excellent write-up by Tartan Terror for that procedure. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=117809#post117809 Now you can follow the normal procedure and re-install the rear wheel. After the wheel is installed, tighten the axle nut to 110 ft.lbs.. Now you are ready to fill the new rear end with lube. I use Mobil 1 synthetic but that is just my personal choice. As you can see, I filled the rear before re-installing the rear wheel so you can actually do it either way. http://www.venturerider.org/vmaxrear/100_1414%20%28Small%29.jpg That's it folks. You now have VMAX gearing in your RSV, Royal Star or Venture. Blue Ridge Mountain Sportmax offers the VMAX rears for all our bikes so if you are interested John Furbur at http://rmsportmax.com/gateway.html
  19. Is this a previously know issue? Where should I begin looking? Glad I got them running lights installed. They worked wonders! I drove 43+ miles using them. They are quite bright.
  20. Help when the bike is running I got fuel running out an overflow tube that sits under the tank there are 4 hoses however 1 the 2nd flow the right side is running fuel out how do i stop this
  21. Ok so here is an interesting question, I have an 84 venture royale I had it sitting idling and the voltage guage kept going a lil lower then the engine stalled out. the bike was running for a bit I was trying to work the cob webs out from not running for so long. my question is does the stator on the venture not put out alot of power at a low idle? I think it does idle a lil low so I was thinking it might not be putting out enough power unless I raise the idle. when I rolled on the throttle the power came up so it was produceing enough power if i was riding it. is this common for the venture or is my idle just set too low?
  22. Has anyone tried these in place of their eyebrows on the 2nd gen fairing to use as additional turn signals and pos running light? http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=258621E3-0B5D-485F-868C-A23753573970
  23. Just wondering if anyone on here can recomend a good (fair, reasonably priced) Yamaha mechanic in Northeast Houston/Humble/Kingwood area. I have a nice old 81 Maxim 650 that I'd like to get running again, and wrench turning is not my specialty. It was running good about two years ago, but I spent some time commuting between Houston and San Antonio and didn't get to ride it for a while. Needs carb work, fork seals, and some brake work. I tried the Yamaha dealer on 59 in Humble, but they won't work on a bike this old for some reason. Another option is to sell this bike and find a nice first gen Venture, but I'd really like it running first cuase I don't think it's gonna take that much. Any suggestions appreciated.
  24. My 05 RSTD has been running rough the last two times I used it for the first few miles and yesterday when I started it one of the carb. must have a stuck float. It was running fuel out of the blow by hose. Has anyone else had problems with this or the new fuel with alcohol? Thanks Bill
  25. Attached are some pics of the new Venom X I mounted on the front of the '83VR a few months ago. I rode it lightly around town, and then about 750miles over a 4 day weekend at VWIII. I noticed a clunk when apply the front brake and while inspecting the caliper, play, and such, I ran into this on the side walls on the tire. I'd Venture to say there's about 1000miles on it since new. In Avon's defense the front tire pressure was about 10 pounds low when checked in Susanville, and I did ride it pretty hard while running up Hwy 395 after friday's group ride. Stopped for gas with Steve (hdhtr) and got a little carried away trying to catch up with the pack. My question is #1 can i expect this after running a tire low on pressure at high speeds.. 90+ in a couple of areas and #2 should I replace the tire or will it hold up?? I also noticed that on the sidewall the tire inflation should have been 50psi instead of the 40psi I thought was enuff. And should I just go ahead and bite the bullet and pick up a replacement?? Whatcha think???
