  1. Lots of pros and cons to be read on this site about using 15W50 synth oil in the RSV, but it's hard to turn down a 5 quart container of Mobile 1 for $23 at Wal-Mart. Been using M1 20W50 for about 2 years now, and the 15W50 does seem to be quite a bit thicker, but for older engines with higher mileage and higher rev limits, it makes sense to give it a try, especially at that price. Only concern may be clutch slippage, but we'll see how it performs.
  2. About 90 miles into the ride back to Houston from the Rockport Maintenance Day, Roxie suffered a catastrophic failure. I heard a loud clunk and felt her die. I pulled the clutch, and emergency stopped on the right shoulder. That was kind of exciting, as Dave P./Just Foolin' Around and I were passing cars and fellow VentureRiders. I turned off the power as Roxie spilled out oil. In fact, I'd left a long trail of oil as I made it to the shoulder. I am thankful for my friends, who came to a stop, and who u-turned to come back for me. We had quite a party there on the freeway shoulder. Kreg/Kbay went and got his trailer, and returned to carry me home. It seems to me that she'd thrown a rod. At least that's what we called it when I turned wrenches in High School. I'm not sure what they call it now, or even if that is accurate on a second gen engine. It looks like she lost most of her oil, and there was coolant in the puddle as well. The oil seems to have come out above the front motor mount. My warranty expires in April, and I am glad it happened now, and when surrounded by friends. Is there any way this is not covered by the warranty? I certainly have not heard of a well-maintained Venture engine dying like this. I only have 55,000 miles on her. 3. Is Castrol 75-90 synthetic oil good for the rearend on my RSV? I don't have an owner's manual but I think that it should work ok.....?? Thanks........
  4. Have this on another forum but the experts are here,,, I have noticed here in the past month or so that I have a very slight oil drip in the center of the engine. I think I have traced it to a location that is going to near impossible to check and tighten the small bolts on the left side of the engine up, and behind the covers. It doesn't seem to do it all of the time, just when it sits for a while. But then again it hasn't sit for long until now. I will try to get a photo of the area that I think it is coming from this week end and post it. I also noticed that the sight glass for the oil is full,,, I thought that I had filled it to just above the top mark ever so slightly,,,,,, Now the strange thing... I looked yesterday to just check the drip, and saw a drop or two of anti freeze hanging on the same line that there has been oil. What the heck!!! My shop varies greatly in temperature, and I figure that the line or a clamp is shrunk due to cold, and reheat ( to a degree ) I am puzzled on this a little.... Any Ideas.
  5. OK...in about a month I'll be taking my bike in for all service it needs EXCEPT the oil change (I'll do that myself). I will let them replace plugs, do a carb synch, change the air filter, replace the final gear oil, and repack the steering bearings. I know that some of this may be a little early, but I'd just as soon get it all done now so I don't have to take the bike back for awhile. Am I MISSING anything else they could or should do? I know some of you might be inclined to tell me to do some of those things...but I am much better at turning the key and the throttle than I am at turning a wrench. Thanks. Wally
  6. I run "0" PSI in my front shocks and have found that air pressure is building up in the shocks. The right shock seems to build up faster than the left and I do not understand why. I removed the air valve this morning and noticed oil on the valve. This is making me wonder if the oil seal is leaking and that is what is causing the air pressure to increase. Has anyone seen this before? Would this be a warrenty problem? I have an 06 RSV that was purchased in 07 so I still have some warrenty left. Thanks for the help.
  7. I have the opportunity to purchase this 86 VR for $500. It was side swiped by a cager at an interection. The rider luckly did not receive any injuries and the bike did not go down. The front left fairing got hit and also took out the left side bag. He rode it that way for a while until he rode over something on the way to work. When his work day was done he found a large puddle of oil under the oil pan. So he figured what ever he rode over cracked the oil pan. It does not have rear fender and the crome below the left side bages. It is a VR and he said that the Cassette(probably works), Radio, CB, CASE, Electronic Cruise Control all work good. The Cruise Control does loose some and so he had to use the throttle to bring it backup to speed. He said that it ran great up to the day of the oil incident. It has about 85K miles. I have parts that I could use immediately, trailer hitch, passenger arm rest. Otherwise I think it would make a good parts VR for my 89. Oh the color is definately does not match mine. I recently purchased my 89 VR in June and so I'm just a rookie with the VR. I am willing and capabile of fixing things. Of course I will need my wife's support on this purchase. I was thinking that I could use the parts I mentioned then possible pick up the other parts and list it on Craigs list this spring and get my investment back. Maybe everyone could give an estimate of the value of the VR with all the issues repaired. Your thoughs would be appreciated. I will attach as many pictures as I can.
  8. Can someone provide an general approximation of time, part and dollars in replacing a cracked oil plan.
  9. Finally was time to change out my front tire. I had waited as long as I could for someone to do a write up on changing the fork oil. No luck! So after consulting Rick Butler and learning a lot, through him, about springs and what my particular bike, 05' RSTD, might need I dove in. Changed the fork oil using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF fluid http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-507141.html. I came across this after not being able to find synthetic 10w at the mc shop. Besides I'm partial to Mobil 1! Re packed the steering head bearings. Was gonna install a zerk (greese) fitting http://www.gadgetjq.com/harpo_steeringlube.htm but after seeing the big void plus the hole inside the tube decided that was truly a waste of good Honda Poly and abandoned that task. Installed new springs from Sonic Springs http://www.sonicsprings.com/catalog/product_reviews.php?cPath=27_117&products_id=347&osCsid=0a06f0a4aa631489ed84cc17fad8f92d. Learned thru Rick and also Rich Desmond, from Sonic Springs, how to pre - load a spring and how obtain the the correct amount of fork oil. Installed new front tire. http://www.jakewilson.com/productDetail.do?navTitle=Motorcycle+Tires&webCatId=57&navType=type&webTypeId=443&prodFamilyId=22916&listingId=&sizeAttr=5289 Mounting of that tire, along with the dyna beads, was the only thing I did not do myself! My thoughts: Love the new heavy duty springs. My bike no longer nose dives when brakes are applied! The steering stem nut takes a 27mm socket. 2 trips to the store to figure that one out. Could not find the size in the manual, on line, or in any thread I researched. Oh so thankful that I don't have a fairing!!! Should remove gas tank next time. Moving the handle bar around got hairy sometimes. Took 2 days. Have to let the old oil drain overnight! Glad I had Rick to hold my hand otherwise this wanna be mc mechanic would have screwed up. Sonic Springs really stepped up to the plate and responded quickly to my questions and concerns Once again a very special thank you Rick Butler!!!!
  10. Some time ago I bought a magnet that is half moon shape and fits around the Oil filter. It will catch any small particles of metal and hold it to the lower part of the oil filter thus preventing it from getting into the engine. Question?? Does anyone know where I can buy these as I am unable to find them any longer. I acquired the one I have from Whitney but they no longer sell them. Help!! I two boys what one for their bikes. Thanks, Dan:depressed:
  11. I changed my oil and noticed a lot of sludge on the filler cap. This is an 02 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7 V-8. That was about 2200 miles ago and I added 7.5 oz. of SeaFoam to the oil when I put it in. I also installed a new PCV valve. The truck has 126.5K miles now and I have never had a problem with it. Question: Can I continue to use the SeaFoam with each oil change or should I change from dino oil to synthetic? And would either of this make any difference? There is a forum that really blasts this engine for too small journals and cylinders dropping out plus engine seisures with low mileage, but I have never had any problems other than the sludge starting to build.
  12. my 2010 Wings fuel mileage seems to be all over the place from 35 to 40 miles per gallon. I got 1600 miles on the bike using premium gasoline 92 octane BP or 89 oct from Sunoco. Seem to get better mileage from the 89. I know its how and were you ride but with my RSTD i got 44 miles per gallon on mid-grade gas always put in 2 oz s of marvel mystery oil. I know there will be a difference from a 4 to 6 cylinder but always averaged 44 mpg. How many miles will it take for my Goldwing to break-in and get a good average and what are other Goldwings getting. When i ride highway its 65 to 70 mph and 45 to 50 on our main roads down here in florida. Will be switching to synthetic oil on the next change and have factory Dunlop's tires.
  13. There have been lots of discussions on the best oil to use, and every one has an opinion, but very few has said why they think their choice is better than anothers. Just what do you look for in your oil? Is your choice based on independent research reports, personal experience, smoother shifting, price or (like me) just what my daddy used? With so many opinions on oil brands, surely there are good reasons for making those choices.
  14. i know this is already running in another thread but i wanted to add a video with out getting into trouble so here it is your fram oil filter and some others hope it tells you what you want to know \ [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX0xrqvlsNI&feature=fvw]YouTube - Are Fram Oil Filters The Best ?[/ame]
  15. sorry, this may be a duh question. I'm a classic Yamaha fan... just recently rebuilt a xs 750 triple. I saw this big bad beauty(83 venture royal) at a local used motorcycle place, with a nice winter project price tag, and couldn't resist. so every Japanese motorcycle has its own engeneering secrets and issues to overcome. I located where the oil goes in on the lower rear/right of the bike... but the cap had no dip stick? how do you check the oil? thank you all in advance.
  16. Hi, I read the oil filter cross reference sheet on the technical link and was wondering if anyone from Canada used a Canadian Tire (Motormaster) oil filter and what the number is? I was in Canadian Tire this evening and there were no Fram filters that fit my 2004 RSV. Thank you in advance.
  17. I picked up the Oil this morning at Walmart for a nice price. It is Synthetic and the oil grade is recommended for our Venture as stated on the sticker in the trunk. T5 also has JASO certifications listed in the back of the container, but it does says Energy Conserving in front of the label. Has anybody used this in their Venture?
  18. Time to install a new front tire! Where is the best deal now for Avon Cobra's? Also plan on chaning the fork oil and adjusting the steering Head bearings. Could use some input there! This is the only write up I could find for the procedure: http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002013&id=349 Thinking about putting a zerk fitting in the steering head yoke area? Any thoughts on that? I know there was a how to write up but cannot find it?! What else should I be doing while I have this all apart? THANKS ALL!!
  19. Last weekend, I noticed a mysterious red light come on when I rev limited in 2nd gear. I'd never seen it before, and the manual was inconvenient. So I checked the oil level and was shocked to see that it was at the bottom of the sight glass, and looked rather black. I just changed the oil, and it was black and nasty. Clearly, she burned oil since the last change (about 4000 miles ago). I changed her oil just before my trip to Zion National Park, Four Corners, etc. I towed a trailer on that trip, so 3500 miles of those 4000 were towed. She's never burned any oil (except when I overfilled her, before I realized she took less than the manual). She just rolled over 50,000 miles. What causes a bike to burn oil? Dave
  20. Garfield on the oil crisis A lot of folks can't understand how we came To have an oil shortage here in Canada . Well, there's a very simple answer - Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn't know we were getting low. The reason for this is purely geographical. Our oil is located in: ALBERTA SASKATCHEWAN BRITISH COLUMBIA MANITOBA COASTAL NEW BRUNSWICK COASTAL NEWFOUNDLAND Our DIPSTICKS are located in OTTAWA Any Questions ??? NO ?... Didn't think so.
  21. ROTELLA T and ROTELLA T Synthetic are universal oils, providing lubrication and protection for four-stroke diesel and many four-stroke gasoline engines (but not aviation piston engines). We do not performance test these products in motorcycle engines, so any comment must be based on oil performance specifications and oil chemistry. Most motorcycle engine manufacturers recommend oil by API Service Category. Some, like Harley (when their brand of oil is not available), recommend API CG-or CH-4 oils, which are diesel performance categories. Others recommend API SL, SJ, or earlier Service Category oil for gasoline engines. Where the engine oil sump also serves the wet clutch and transmission, oils without friction modifiers are usually recommended. Both ROTELLA T products exceed all the API Service Category performance requirements mentioned above. They are formulated principally as heavy-duty diesel oils. Compared to most passenger car gasoline engine oils, they have superior oxidation resistance, superior extreme pressure wear protection, superior high temperature-high shear viscosity, and superior detergency and dispersancy - and they contain NO friction modifier additives. If I were to choose oil for a motorcycle engine, these are qualities I would want. Clearly, ROTELLA T Multigrade and ROTELLA T Synthetic would be better choices for motorcycle engines than passenger car only oils. Without knowing the composition of, and performance specifications met by, "motorcycle oils", it is not possible to compare the ROTELLA T products performance to them.
  22. I was out running my VR83 and stopped for ice cream,When I came out I noticed an oil leak under my bike.My bike never leaked anything.I did not think about it untill I got home.As soon as I turned it off,oil poured out from the middle of the kick stand area.It stopped after a few secs.I started it and it did not leak at all.Turned it off and leaked repeated its self.I have not investigated yet.Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking? Thanks all....Ray:confused:
  23. i just had a shift pin put in i have oil leaking on the lfet side if bike were can i get gaskets from
  24. I was coming home from work tonight on the freeway, when all of a sudden it was like I put my foot on the brakes. I started to slow even with more throttle. I got off the exit and stopped at a light. Pulled over and looked all the way around the bike in the semi-darkness of a gas station. It had smoke coming from underneath but no oil or anything. definite burning rubber smell but I couldn't see anything stuck somewhere. started it back up and it revved fine. pulled out and it ran just like normal. when I got home I shined a flashlight all the way around and can't find anything. 86 Venture with 28,000 miles. I replaced the brakes and tires about 1500 miles ago. Rear end was lubed about 5,000 miles ago and the oil changed last month. I wonder about a dragging rear brake, but the peddle felt fine and I pushed down hard on both front and rears before stopping. Anyone ever have this problem? I worried I might be melting a clutch but I would think that it wouldn't go away like that
  25. After the issue I had last night with the gas shooting from my tail pipe I of couse had to change the oil. I check the owner manual and it list 20w40 as the recommended oil. So I checked Wally World, Menards, and Advanced Auto. No one had it. ended up with Quaker State 10w40. Hope this is ok. I did see Rotella 15w10 thought about that, but I was thinking Rotella is for deisel engines.
