  1. We are always told that a car has an engine not a motor. This based on the fact that a motor runs on electricity and an engine is a based on internal combustion. So why is it called a motorcycle not an enginecycle
  2. What do you guys think? It is starting to have 2nd gear issues. Would it be worth it to buy and then put the motor from an '88 in it? Dave
  3. I have an 84 Venture and removed both wheels to have new tires put on. I got the instructions on this website and they were great. When I removed the right muffler, a small piece of baffle came out of the exhaust pipe. It looked like a bent piece of kitchen sink drain. I did not put it back in. After reassembilng my bike I test rode it and things were fine. The next day I filled it up with gas and road 250 miles. About 3 miles out the motor began to hesitate when I increased the throttle at low rpms. I reinstalled the little piece of baffle and it ran the same. I took off the other muffler and their was no piece of baffle. Needless to say I am baffled. Why is it running poorly?
  4. I recently just purchased a 2008 Rstd that was brand new left over with no miles on it. I drove it back from Arkansas to ohio which was about 800 miles and dumped the oil and put Aims oil in it. Immediately i noticed i tick noise when the motor was cold and when it warmed it didnt notice it as much. So took it to a local Yamaha dealer and he heard it as well and notified his rep. and they answered him that the covers around the motor enhance the motor noise sound. They took notice and wrote it down as a complaint of mine but thats as far as i got. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do beyond this? I know that manual says 26,000 miles valve adjustment is needed but i dont want to pay for an adjustment if i have too? any suggestions or thoughts about this?

  6. I purchased a Wolo Horn last summer and installed it with no problem. About two weeks ago I took a ride on a nice day here in Michigan and for the fun of it tooted the horn, but no sound. Got back to the shop and parked it. This past Saturday I started checking the wiring and all was good. Took the horn apart and found a electric motor and points. Cleaned it all up and put it back together and still no toot. Took it back apart and found a plastic impeller down inside that the motor turns. You could not turn the impeller by hand very easy. Cleaned it out in the wash tank, W-D 40 it and it still would not turn freely. Could not get it to work. It is sealed in that area so you can't get to it. I am going to try a Stabel Horn this time and see if it lasts longer. Anyone else had this trouble?
  7. hello every one a friend of mine rode down to see me about 2 hours ago. well he went out side to start his bike and it just went whirl klunk klunk . now it wont turn over? we checked oil. its full. we cant push start it it acts like the motor is locked. going forward in gear. but we can push it backwards some and then the motor turns? push it forward again and it turns then stops? im thinking a stuck starter? as when he came here the bike was running great. 1984 1100 virago i think? he just went home about a half hour ago. and i coverd the bike up and let him take the maxim i got home. im seroiusly thinking about takeing some kind of motorcyle repair course. saw one on line but wonder if its a scam? any way thanks out there if any one can give us a clue as to what to look for.
  8. Hey all, I did compression check on my 96 RS and found low compression in cylinder #1. Added a little oil to see if it was rings or not and it made no improvement. The motor has 18k miles on it. I talked to the dealer I work with but his proposal is TOO open ended. I dont want to wind up with a $1500.00 + bill without knowing first. I live in Pa. Looking for an alternative to the dealer.
  9. Not for these guys Winter camp I am sure there are a few from our group that would be up this Dave
  10. Alright, so my only question is, do the 2nd gen ventures handle as well as the first gens. It looks to me like they angled the motor to make it less top heavy, so i was just wondering. Thanks- CJ
  11. Ok all you experts; I have a couple questions concerning replacing the motor in my 86 with a motor from an 89. I am of the opinion that the original motor either has a piston slap or some other type of subtle knocking noise only on deceleration. I am quite certain the knocking is there when riding but due to other noise I cannot distinguish this particular knocking from all the other noise. The knocking noise is quite noticeable when the motor is at normal operating temp and when still. Doesn't matter if the tranny is in neutral or any other gear. Anyway, the bike is in otherwise outstanding condition and looks almost new. So, I found another really good motor from an 89 that will be going in (41K miles). Here is my question: 1) Since the replacement is coming without carbs, will the carbs from the 86 mount and operate without any issues? I think they will but would like to hear other opinions. 2) I believe all the electronics are the same but what other concerns or issues might I be overlooking? Thanks for the advise.
  12. I am going to purchase a trike and trying to decide between the Hannigan or Motor Trike. Please give me opinions. I dont know which sales person to believe.
  13. Hello everyone, Happy New Year!! I have a situation that I need some help with. My 1996 Royal Star wound up with a mouse nest in the airbox, unknown to me, and has been ingested into the motor. The nest seems to be just soft debris. What if any problems could come from this?
  14. Does the venture 1300 have a vmax engine? need to settle a bet
  15. Hi every one hope you all had a GREAT Xmas and Top NEW YEARS This post is for, I have a clicking noise coming from the rear of my bike, it happens only when I move my bike with the motor not running. Has this happened to any of your bikes? If so what was the problem and what was the way it was fixed. Thanks PIPER FROM ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA
  16. I got a chance to sit on a new 2010 Honda Fury today. A friend stopped by to show it to me. He sold his HD Road King off and got this Honda recently. Honda definately took a different approach when they created this bike. It uses a 1300 VTX motor and made a very clean look above the motor. The stretched end and gas tank really made for a custom look, along with the 250 rear tire. I wasn't impressed with the puney car horn, but at least Honda did put Dunlop E3's on at factory. There wasn't any marking on the tank which made it hard to recognize at first. Neat looking machine, just not my style in my old age.....
  17. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with 25E in KY and TN. We're heading down to Pigeon Forge for a week in the Smokey's and was thinking about taking this route with the motor home and trailer. Any advise? Hilly? Twisty? Maybe better to just check it out on the bike?
  18. I guess Hondas coming out with a new V4 motor http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/a47519bf40f691d9527c6678c627391b http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/80179491dbb16f3caf173d078525f5fa http://feelv4.com/en_GB/pages/mainpage/nointro/cid:001/gap:003/lm:gb1/af:a01/ap:h01/cr:E03/ln:en_GB http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/26/spy-shots-new-honda-v4-motorcycle-caught-testing/ http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/2wheeltuesday/a47519bf40f691d9527c6678c627391b I guess it will be 200 hp V4 1200 cc motor and have cylinder shut off for better gas mileage what a concept. Boy that would be nice in a 1st Gen package. At least some manufacture is thinking ahead.
  19. I decided to mount highway pegs on my floor boards in stead of the crash bars. This is what I ended up with. They are made for a Road Star. They are drill to mount. I love them. They get my feet away from the motor heat during the hot summer months. http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0295.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0296.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0297.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0298.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0299.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0300.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0301.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0303.jpg
  20. Is the piece of frame that the Vin# is attached to (lower right hand side that needs to be removed to slide the motor out) on the 1st gens interchangable???? ie can I take a lower motor frame with Vin# attached from an 84VR & exchange it onto a 90VR ??? :canada:
  21. Lets talk a little about viscosity. As everyone can agree that we as a group cannot agree on which motor oil to use. As ststed in my owners manual if I don't use Yamalube I can use any SAE 10W30 motor oil without friction additives. So I take that to mean Yamaha does recommend car or automotive motor oil. So now that brings me to this question. If Yamaha recommends SAE 10W30 what happens if I put 5W40 or 15W40 or even 20W50 in it? Yamaha doesn't recommend 5W40 but 10W30 is within the range of 5W40 so is it alright? Isn't 5W40 a little to then on hot days and a little to thick on cold days? I don't remember reading anything about what climate you live in so I assume Yamaha took that into consideration when they recommend any SAE 10W30 oil? Let the fun begin and hopefully we will all learn something from this. Harry:puzzled:
  22. Hello everyone, I spoke to a Yamaha Store shop foreman at the Toronto International Motorcycle Show about what is coming for the Venture in 2010. He said they are testing the new VMax motor in the Venture(slightly detuned to around 160hp) and if all goes well we could see it 2010 or at worst 2011. He also mentioned that there doesnt seem to be to many changes to the rest of the bike. They are also looking very closely at the Vmax to ensure the motor works without problems. Hope all goes well with the VMax!!!!!!!! Screaming Red:080402gudl_prv:
  23. Ok it is time for an oil change. This will be the first one since I bought my 2000MM RSV. I went to wally world and picked up some Rotella 15w40 which is an oil many members use on the RSV's. I also picked up a couple of Super Teck 7317 filters. The oil cost $11 for 1 gal. While I was looking at the different motor oils I noticed a Motorcraft 15w40 Heavey Weight Diesel Motor Oil. The Motorcraft wa $11.50 for 5 quarts which is a little cheaper. Has anyone used the Motorcrft Diesel Motor Oil and if you did how did you like it?
  24. The whole time I've owned this Second Gen. I thought to myself how it lacked power?man this thing is really detuned? I sold my First Gen. and kept this one? WHY? It ran fair or OK on our trip to ST. Charles MO. meet, we kept up with the group OK but not what I expected from a V4 motor. Coming home on I44 doing 70-75mph we were getting around 32-35mpg not bad for fighting head winds and some rain storms but still I expected better performance. Anyway after we got home I went out to ride up to the store and it would not even pull itself out of the garage. Found I bought some bad gas, after putting in fresh gas I did some testing and found my #3 cylinder was totally dead no spark... Well after my second Knee rehab again, I finally got around to changing it out,man that was a big pain in the rear. I could not believe the power this beast has now WOW. my word this baby is ALIVE.. The Whole time I've owned this bike the #3 cylinder must have been dead! thats over 2,500mi riding time. WOW this baby is smooth....... This motor is so well built you may not know you was on three cylinders... If not for the bad gas ordeal I might have not known I had a bad coil. And to think I was getting ready to sell this Second Gen. Well I changed my mind NOW. Looking forward to ST Jude's next Month, really going to see how well this baby does on open roads!!! Now I know why I kept it and sold the First Gen. Second gen. Rocks!!!
