1. My "84 VR has the dreaded 2nd gear issue that's slowly getting worse. It's to the point that just keeping up with traffic leaving a light will cause it to jump out. It's a sidecar rig and 2nd is really handy to get the tugboat rolling. I just lucked into a trans gearset out of a '89 VR. It's my understanding that it the same as the '84 except it has some updated parts including the thrust washer. I didn't get the driven middle gear and I realize they should be kept as a matched set. No forks or shift drum either. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4511886358_c30c1708fa_b.jpg I'm debating how to proceed. Do it just put this split thrust washer on in my 84 and call it done? Do I swap in this entire gearset? If I do that do I have to swap the middle gear to keep a matched set? I'm assuming that I would have to re-shim everything them too. Doesn't the worn split washer affect middle gear backlash? If so it would seem that it's pretty forgiving. Should I swap this 2nd gear wheel and 5th gear wheel onto the 84 shaft? I assume you should swap over the the 5th gear pinion too since it meshes with the 5th gear wheel, but I've changed many automotive trans gears w/o replace the mating one without issue. Is undercutting the dogs necessary or is it just a bit of insurance? The answers to some of these questions may become self evident when I get it apart. Any other magic I need to know? I know that's a lot of questions but I'm trying to gather as much input as possible before I open her up.
2. I'm going to be in the area around the middle of May. I like the size and the look of this sidecar. Problem would be is there any way it could/would work on a RSV? I know so little and want one so bad. hh http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/mcy/1700009499.html
3. Died for me in the middle of a sentence!!!
4. After pulling out the rear linkage to install zerks and fix a bad bushing, I see that there is oil leaking from the boot on the swingarm. And has been for a while, from the looks of it. I guess I need to replace the oil seal on the middle gear. So, after getting the swingarm off, do I pull the entire Ujoint/shaft/assembly off of the engine, and then take the yoke off of the shaft??? Or, can I get the yoke off the shaft and replace the seal without doing all that??? I've also heard bad things about removing/installing the rubber boot. Am I worrying for nothing?? This is uncharted territory for me, I don't want to mess this up!!!
5. First of all I would like to thank Squidley, Eusa1, and StudMuffin. Still need one more set though. For providing me with the parts I needed. I got a hold of some older Chrysler Emblems and starting hacking , dremaling , and I still am not done yet. But almost! I want you to tell me what you like or do not like. OR Don't even add the part. Should I place it on the bottom of the hatch or the middle? These are not even glued or set it. I just have them hanging and they still need to be cleaned up.. HEY , I gotta do something to keep me busy during this long long winter The one That (YOU) decide I should not use will go on my Trailer back-side. These are pics of Just the star and the other is with the star and logo. These are of just the star in the middle and lower of my trunk hatch # 1 - # 2 - These are of just the star with logo in the middle and lower of my trunk hatch # 3 - #4 - # 3 - The one with the star logo does form better on the hatch I noticed and it is a bit wider. Thanks for your in-put! Jeff
6. I've been looking for an oil leak and on removing the rear wheel I see oil leaking out of the middle gear dust cover. I suspect the oil seal needs repacing. ( part No 18 on the middle gear parts catalogue). Anybody got any ideas on doing this ? Jim O'D Australia.
7. I'm looking for an answer to a problem I'm having, and decided to go to the experts. I just completed a stator replacement. All went well, the second time. I don't want to explain. I am having an issue with the middle cover. After removing the allen screws, and removing the cover and gasket, something looked odd. On the back side, I expected a cylinder like backing on the bottom screw hole. To match up to the case with the gasket. (I have the copper washer) The top half of the cylinder is not there, and looks like it never was??? To put it simply, the dam thing won't stop dripping oil. It won't seal. I have never seen the back of this plate befoe, is there a piece missing or broken off. Any thoughts??? joe
8. I initiated my KLR 650 Thursday ,Okay it's not a 4-wheeler, I decided to take one of these winter ski-doo trails that followed the Trans Canada power lines for 12 miles one way. The trail was jagged , round boulder gravel great for a jeep in low gear:rotfl:for 5 miles and then the water showed up. Most the way up the depth of the water was around 1 foot or 2 deep except the one pictured below was knee deep (Now which side to I take left, right or down the middle.) Down the middle it will be ....While standing upward and in second gear I hammered it Reached the curve of the road and my eyes widened :doh:a major wash out fast flowing water I kept it at a steady pace and than it happened the front wheel drops downward and here Im going over the handles bars .Yahoo!!! Flat on my back and a motorcycle on top of me Im so glad that it is a light scoot The other 2 photos Northern Ontario Speckle Trout lakes Oh the camera , sleeping bag tent Etc are presently being dried out Yup , Im not 21 . The pain stays a little longer:rotfl:
9. When I get more time, I will post pics of my father's day weekend with my daugther and also pup in my pup tent. In high school I was part of the explorer scouts (basically a recruiting tool for the National Guard). We did camping so I have a military pup tent (assuming Army). I haven't had it out since high school but thought it would be fun for the kids to play in. Anyway I tried setting it up and did an ok job of it. Here is where some of you might have to break out your field manuals. LOL. Is there an SOP for setting up a military pup tent? For instance in order: Poles on each end, guy line on each end, ground stakes on each corner and 2 in the middle. My problem was that there was a bow in the middle and I just imagine the ridgeline should be straight. When I post the pics, you will see what I mean. Also what was used for ground covering and guessing it isn't waterproof, so what was put over it to keep the water out? Seems like I remember a rain poncho thrown over the top or used for ground covering and just snapped the poncho to the tent. Been a long time so I don't remember anymore. I don't know if there are any variations of military pup tents but, the tent itself it 2 halves that overlap in the middle and snap together. You have 2 holes on each end for the tent poles and a loop on each end for the guy line (I think that is what the rope is called). You have 3 holes on each side for the tent stakes (really 4 on each end if you include the holes for the flaps. There are some markings on the tent that I wonder if anyone might know about or how to find some info. about it. It says DR MO W2 2PEQ. The tent pole is in 3 sections on each end and all but one is stamped 1975. The other one I don't remember the date, seems like either in the 80's or early 90's.
10. All the accessories I've ordered to make it possible to keep riding are starting to arrive at last Steves' grill guard is here, adjustable floorboards have arrived, rear spoiler light came today and also my braided brake lines. Just waiting on my specially ordered tank bra from Troy (on it's way) and the most important bit--the trike conversion ! That won't arrive here and clear customs until middle of June :crying: The only thing left to get are the handlebars, but getting short of :mo money:Will post pics when it's all done (if I ever figure out how to do it?)
11. Well guys it is time for me to put my trike together, doc told me that my hip is no longer ingood enough shape to ride soooooo, all I need now is the controls on the handle bars. For those of you that didnt know I was in a head on colission with a Big Dodge pickup middle part of last yr.Hence the need for a trike. So if anyone has those things let me know and how much ya want for them. Sorry i havnt been on but its been a long haul back. Thanks agian .....Fred
12. After three weeks in the Garden of Eden, God came to visit Eve. "So, how is everything going?" inquired God. "It is all so beautiful, God," she replied. "The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking, the smells, the sights, everything is wonderful, but I have just one problem. It's these breasts you have given me. The middle one pushes the other two out and I am constantly knocking them with my arms, catching them on branches and snagging them on bushes. They're a real pain." And Eve went on to tell God that since many other parts of her body came in pairs, 20 such as her limbs, eyes, ears, etc. She felt that having only two breasts might leave her body more "symmetrically balanced". "That's a fair point," replied God, "But it was my first shot at this, you know. I gave the animals six breasts, so I figured that you needed only half of those, but I see that you are right. I will fix it up right away." And God reached down, removed the middle breast and tossed it into the bushes Three weeks passed and God once again visited Eve in the Garden of Eden. " Well, Eve, how is my favorite creation?" "Just fantastic," she replied, "But for one oversight. You see, all the animals are paired off. The ewe has a ram and the cow has her bull. All the anim als have a mate except me. I feel so alone." God thought for a moment and said, "You know, Eve, you are right. How could I have overlooked this? You do need a mate and I will immediately create a man from a part of you. Let's see....where did I put that useless boob?" Now doesn't THAT make more sense than all that crap about the rib?
13. If anyone wants to stay in some VERY nice facilities in Leakey,Texas,(Right in the middle of the famed "Three Sisters" Area) I HIGHLY recommend this place , http://www.friopecanfarm.com/fpffacilities.html , While Leakey has a "Motorcycle Only" facility,It is great for Bikers. If you are looking for ALL accomodations,IE:Full kitchen, pots and skillets included plus mixer etc PLUS Heavy steel constructed BBQ Pitts at every cabin and alongside the Frio River plus right in the middle of a huge Pecan Orchard this place is NICE. It seems pricey but splitting with another couple it is well worth it.We rented a 2Bedroom Cabin,2 baths,1 in each bedroom for $140.00 a night. They are super friendly people.I even asked if they would accommodate a large Venture Rider group and they gave me keys to see their larger cabins that have 4 Bedrooms 4 baths full kitchen etc. ALSO a LARGE,VERY Large Pavillion with HUGE BBQ pitts for a group BBQ..THEY SUPPLY THE WOOD FOR THE PITTS!!! I am in no way affilliated with them I just like to share a great place when I find one..I will be back there again. Tom
14. Thanks to the slow manufacturing sector, they won't let us go to work tomorrow (damn the luck). Can't see any good reason not to put on a couple hundred miles. We're in Fox Lake; between Madison and Fond du lac. Looking for any suggestions for a lunch stop anywhere in the middle of the state. We're kind of new to the site, but I think what we might be after is an impromptu M&E. We'll watch the site for a while tonight and log on for sure at 9 am tomorrow to discuss any options/takers. Hope to see you riding tomorrow, Scooter Bob and Karen
15. Gambrel, Clayton SPC 178th MP CO. UNIT#63 CAMP BASRAH APO AE 09375. and the 5 will soon be changing to a 4
16. I did my first oil change this week (2005 RSTD). I filled it to middle of the sight glass, started it to make sure the oil filter was full and checked it again. I had to pour a little more in to get it back to the middle. The thing I have a question about is after I rode to work and back the next day, I looked at it again and it's all the way to the top of the sight glass. Is this normal? Should I drain some out?
17. Hi there, New here. Nice to see so many people still riding these old bikes. I haven't had mine lit in 5 years for various issues.. not the least of which was the ridiculous prices wanted for insurance coverage. Anyway... back to the bike. I just got the whole slave loose from the bike... not a problem. NOW I need to get it out of it's hiding place. Is there some magic? Will it drop down? ( Bike is on a frame lift right now and I haven't been able to get my hands in there ) or do I have to take that middle gear off? Please.... say it ain't so! Thanks in advance for your help. I have a rear caliper and fork seals to tackle too plus cleaning the carbs which I KNOW need some de-gunking.
18. i have a 1983 venture with transmission problems it started under hard acceleration in second gear it made a loud rattling noise then stopped. then started occasional vibaration and metallic clunking noises.through the left footrest and feels like it wants to lock up.it selects all the gears clean and precise i have checked the diff prop shaft and middle gear and cant see anything wrong.I think i may be looking at a clutch problem any ideas ? would be much a appreciated cheers chas.
19. Time to take a road trip today to Moose Jaw Sk. its about an hours drive to the west of my home and a nice little oasis in the middle of the prairie. Please excuse the shots, I am not a phtographer but I thought people may want an idea of what is in Moose Jaw if they are going to make the trip. Today was a gorgeous day, especially since its in the middle the first long weekend of the summer. We are having a very late spring as its been very cool and very dry. Usually the Wakamow Valley is lush and green by this time of year. Click here to view the pics, http://picasaweb.google.ca/friesman1/MooseJawMay18_08 Brian:cool10:
20. On my 89 VR 2 of the carbs are wet with gas as far up as I can see without taking things apart. Looks like the front carb on left side and rear one on the right side, both look to be wet from the middle down. Leaks so that when on side stand it had a small puddle on the garage floor about the size of a coffee cup coaster. I drove it Saturday and overnight it piddled on the floor! Naughty Bike!!!! Any suggestions?
21. Don't know if there's a way around it but since Ebay has redone their security I don't think we are going to be able to tell if we are bidding against one another on an item. Don added that field but then ebay now blanks out the middle of the bidders name. So no hard feelings if you get outbid by someone here. Don did try.
22. I put a deposit down on a '06 Black Cherry. Blues Lover told me about it so I stopped at the shop in London last weekend on the way to the Kitchener M&E and was only able to see it through the front window because they were closed. After several e-mails back and forth this week, they saw the light and we came to an agreement on the phone this morning. Can you think of a better way to spend your time in the middle of a blizzard? Sure hope my old body will let me ride again. I guess we're going to find out. Just have to wait for the snow to melt enough to get my trailer out of the barn.
23. Do we have any members, or member's with family serving in Irag, Afganistan, or anywhere in the Middle East this year?
24. It's that time of year again. The dreaded Black Friday Sale. Women dream about this day for months. By tomorrow night the check book will be empty. Last year I got there 1/2 hour before opening at 5:00 am. I had 600 ahead of me. Now I know why Walmart quit the layaway program. It keeps the low lifes out. Middle class still puts on a good pushing and shoving show with fights to. I'm not going this year but mamamo will bring me a report.I hope she parks on the far end of the lot easy on the paint.
25. What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you or you saw having to do with a motorcycle? Last year I damn near killed myself with 2 motorcycles, neither one of which was running. I was putting my Virago up on it's center stand when I got off on the right side. My left foot got hung up on the seat and I fell between the Virago and my Nomad. My lightning fast reflexes being what they are I reached out for smoething to support my self and immediately found the left handle bar of the Nomad. The Virago was falling towards the Nomad and the Nomad was falling towards the Virago and I was falling down in the middle of the heap. There I was, caught in the middle again, with my right arm hanging onto the Nomad and the Nomad hanging onto the Virago and me on my back underneath both. Not good! I did manage to crawl out from under and get help standing both bikes back up. no one has let me forget this. I started so let's here some more.
