  1. With the key off I have power to the clock but as soon as I turn the key to the on position I lose all power. I was having problems with the charging system and I was told to check the plug between the alternator stator and the voltage regulator for burned connections. I accidentally tried to start the bike before plugging this connection back together and it made a weird buzzing sound and that is when this whole loss of power when the key is on problem started. So Now I need to fix this problem before I can finish repairing the charging problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Where to start? I'm kind of at a loss on this one. I tried searching the forums for a similar problem already posted but wasn't able to find one.
  2. Help! I'm about ready to punch my monitor......... Every time I download something from www.freedownloads.com it ends up not being free............ "EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY SO!" I've tried and removed the following supposed freeware: Regcure, Pcfix and Tuneup360. Oh yeah, they do their scans but you have to pay for the activation key! This is not as they were advertised in the Freeware section. Anyone know where I can get some FREEWARE to fix windows registry problems? I need a beer!

    Key Please!

Question what is the best way to get a key made for a Venture if you don't have anything other than a key and the bikes V.I.N.? Dealer or locksmith? Thanks for the input.............. Mark
  4. Can anyone tell me why my CB only works before noon. It usually works fine when we 1st take off then later in the day I can be heard but I can't hear anything but a dead key. If anyone has had this problem please tell me what to do to fix this problem.
  5. Has anyone ever experienced a faulty key ignition causing "no spark" to one of the cylinders?? I thought I had a bad TCI but I tried another and I had the same problem. I fiddled with the key (sprayed a little WD-40 in the key slot) - worked it back and forth a couple of dozen times and suddenly got spark! The bike has kind of been driving me crazy with the lack of spark to that cylinder - then - suddenly spark again... Just wondering if the bad key ignition could cause that symptom or not - best to ask the Venture specialists here on the board. Thanks in advance
  6. First of all, usually I hear the pump click a few times before I start 'er up. Last night (it was much colder than usual, not that it makes a difference) when I was heading home from work I got on, turned the key and didn't hear anything. The bike ran perfectly fine all the way home (and I had ~145 miles on that particular tank). For kicks, about 1 mile away from my house I turned the fuel off, pulled in and parked. I let the bike sit for a minute or so and turned the key ON again to my surprise I didn't hear the clicking. I am presuming that my pump is toast (I will check the pump by jumping it from the battery when I get home to verify pump and not the relay)... My questions are this: 1) Will our bikes run quite well (hard acceleration, high speeds, etc) even if the pump isn't pumping and I only have 1-2 gallons left in the tank? 2) What all is necessary to pick up if I go pick up one of those Mr. gasket pumps? Do I just need to get the appropriate fittings so that the hoses will effectively be out of one end? I recall reading that the #42s pump was no longer an option because it was redesigned - what is the difference between the 'new' and 'old' designs and what is it about the 'new' design that makes it not work for us? Muchos grassybutt folks. (That's thanks a lot for those of you that don't speak spanglish).
  7. Got on the bike yesterday, turned the key, and the engine would crank but not start. After turning the key on and off a couple of times, it finally started. While riding to lunch, the bike just shut down in the middle of the street. Played with the switches again and eventually it started again. I got it home and noticed that I wasn't hearing the gas pump clicking when I turned it on. Tested the pump and it is great. At one point while it was running, I accidently bumped the ignition key and the bike died but the lights stayed on. That is when I noticed a little play in the key. Is it safe to assume that I need a new main switch? Here are the two main questions....Is there a way to get the switch off without taking the radiator off? And...Why would the engine crank but not start? (I'm hoping that I don't have another problem.) Thanks in advance for any and all help!
  8. how do I clean conection at key switch? I'm having problems with no spark on back plugs. I read in one forum possile low voltage from key switch,I've already checked ohms on pickup coils & ignition coils. I had a problem with my key, (I could not turn it) so I used black carbon lube in ignition. Could that cause a problem? thanks Al
  9. I installed my new HID headlight setup from HID Country a few weeks ago. From the start I'm having a problem with the light not always lighting. I turn the key off, and turn the key back on and it's fine most the time. I got caught a few times with no headlight on during the day. Has any one else had this problem? I talked with Jason from HID Country, but he has not responded yet. Thanks for any help.
  10. I purchased this tach a year ago without any problems to date. Yesterday while leaving Salisbury NC and heady about eighty miles to my house it quit near Gastonia NC. When I got home I shut of the bike and turned the key back on and the tack did not cycle like it should but the needle droped lower than 0. Today I put the key in and it went up to 8,000 and back to 0 like it should, so I started it and went for a little test run. After two miles it went back to 0. I stopped and fueled up and it is working fine again and has not acted up. I originally thoght something is loose but before I tear into it I was hoping someone else has some input. The tach may be bad also.
  11. Friday after all the Back To The Bricks festivities I rolled in about 1:30am. Pulled under the awning and when I went to take the keys out, the key kind of grabbed. Grabbed enough to slip out of my fingers but not enough to keep them from coming out of the ignition. Yep, fell right into the fairing. Since the key to the house is on the key ring I took the spare key out of my wallet to get into the house. NO the spare key worked in the door knob but for some reason would not work in the dead bolt. All the house windows are locked because running the A/C, flash light in the saddle bag but no key to unlock it. Saw the neighbors light still on so I knocked on his door to borrow a flash light. (of course he had a Lady friend over) Got the flash light and was able to see the keys. Got my hand squeezed down there (motor still HOT) just touched the keys and down farther they fell. Found them again and ripped and burned half the skin off my arm getting to them. Once again as soon I touched them away they went again. Could see no sign of them now. About that time it's almost 3:00am, was going to climb in the van and sleep until morning. Van keys in the house. Noticed a car leave the neighbors and then my neighbor walked over to see if he could help. He got tools and we started taking things apart. Found the keys wedged between the fan and the radiator. Finally got into the house at 4:15am. Now I have enough (working) keys in my wallet to get into everything I own. At least this didn't cost me a bunch of money like everything else that has happened in the past 4 weeks.
  12. 2007 RSMV 24500 miles. Started bike up today and let it warm up. Took off and it felt like the bike was only running on 2 cylinders. Got about 1/4 mile and had to pull into a parking lot. As soon as I pulled in the clutch the bike died. Tried to restart and bike fired but did not start. Pulled out choke all the way and it started and but had to work pretty hard to keep runnning. Shut bike off and turn key back on to check electrical stuff. All appeared to be working. Dash and all lights were normal. Let sit about 10 to 15 minutes turned key on, heard fuel pump running and started up bike. It ran like nothing ever happened. I turned arround and went home. I wonder how long it will be before it happens again?. Guess I'll be calling dealer tomorrow to have them order a pump.
  13. OK I believe i have an ignition switch going bad. I turn on the key and nothing other than the stero works. I keep turning it off and on and finally the dash and everything else comes on 28,000 miles on the bike. Does everyone agree it's the switch and if so where is cheapest place to buy one and can I keep the original lock and key.
  14. now this was scary this morning.. I had been away visiting family yesterday and had to leave the bike out in the heavy rains overnight.. because I have a dodgy ignition key slot cover, I put electrical tape over the hole where the key goes in to prevent it from flooding.. This morning, I go to the bike and go to start it: Key goes in, turn key, electricals come on as normal and with the bike in neutral, I hit the starter and the engine turns once to what feels like to a full compression then stops.. Another press of the starter button and the bike starts normally, runs normally and all is good. That 'stop at compression' thing happens every once in a while, not sure what causes it or what it means but it doesn't seem to cause any harm.. 10 minutes later I'm leaving and pull into a gas station for a fill up.. This time when I go to start the bike, I get that odd 'cranking over to full compression stop' but now all the electricals are out.. ooops!! Turn the key full to the right, red switch ON, no headlight, no radio, no instrumentation, nothing.. wow, its like the battery got disconnected.. no smell of arching or burnt wires, check the ignition fuse and it's good. huh? Nothing.. I move the bike out of the way of the pumps and try it again.. nothing.. nothing. No juice.. ouch.. I'm 500 km away from home and prolly 5000 kms from a decent Yamaha dealership that could help me out.. I cycle the kick stand a few times, remembering something in an article about this.. not sure though.. I wait 10 minutes while chatting with someone about how nice my 'harley' looks etc.. huh.. And then the bike starts as if nothing was wrong.. Mind you, the radio has to have it's channels reset and the trip odo went to full odo as if the bike had it's battery disconnected. So odd! The bike ran well and well, I decided I had better head for home. Luckily for me I had a spare key on the bike so when I had to do fuel stops, I left the ignition "on" with the key but killed the engine with the red switch, used the spare key to open the gas cap.. I was leery of wanting to turn off the ignition switch with the key in case I could no longer get juice through the system again like it did earlier this morning. When I got home, I shut the bike off via key and turned it back on.. every thing is back to normal as if nothing wrong ever happened this morning.. I've been back out several times this evening to see if I could duplicate the error but nothing.. it's all good.. (knock on wood).. So the question is "what happened this morning" ?? Will it happen again? I'm worried this is going to develop into an intermittent problem like my fuel pump did to me last summer.. it would fail every so often but never enough to be properly diagnosed until it finally died the big death.. I'm thinking I will soon need to replace the whole ignition switch (where the key goes in) since the spring loaded slot cover doesn't slide over anymore.. Does anyone have any ideas or comments on what happened or what I should do? $136 for a new switch..
  15. I have a 2000 Venture that is new to me and I was wondering (since I have no owners manual) What lights come on when You turn on the key. Mine only has the yellow check engine light come on for a few seconds then when I kit the starter 2 red lights one each side on the bottom come on while starting it.Should there be other lights come on when the key is on? Also I noticed 2 times in the 4,000 miles I have put on the bike that when it was really hot and I had a tail wind the yellow check engine light came on very faintly so faintly that at first I wasn't sure if itwas on or if it was the sun. Does this light let you know it is getting a little warm or what? Thanks for the help. I am sure I will get everything figured out with you alls help Rick
  16. Ok, I hope someone has a quick / easier / inexpensive fix for this one.. Because I park the bike in the garage over night with the key in the ignition, and seldom stop longer than a fuel stop when traveling, I just noticed that when I pull the key out, the little cover jobbie doesn't cover up the hole that the key fits into.. So if left out over night, and it rains, I'm going to be heading for some problems with rust and such and be out of an ignition switch / lock.. I've sprayed it with WD40 and other products but can't seem to make it move to cover the hole.. Thoughts, suggestions?
  17. Hey Guys I went to the Grocery store on Saturday and when I came out to go home I inserted the key and at first the lights blinked on and then nothing. Great, I thought to myself. I went home and grabbed my truck and trailer, went back and hauled the bike back home. Here's where it gets interesting...I turned the key to the acc. position and the radio started playing intermittantly. I was tired and decided to work on it on Sunday afternoon. When I went back and took the lower half of the fairing so I could get to the starter ( I thought it was probably a loose wire on the starter or a grounding strap...It wasn't ) I would turn the key to Acc. and the radio would not work, but when I turned the key to the On position, one little light came on in the radio but it would not play and nothing else would light up ( ie. dash light, pump, lights...completely dead ) but the little light on the radio was on. It would only come on in the On position and go off in the Acc position. But still nothing else would come on. It's got me stumped. I checked the starter solenoid. It's not loose however I know little else. If any body would be so kind as to point me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Thanks Ken:fingers-crossed-emo
  18. OK folks, I have a factory Yamaha key for a 2nd gen - it came from a 2007 RSV - guess I forgot to give the 2nd key to the buyer a few years ago! There are a limited number of key codes made, so it is quite possible you might have a bike with the same code: A7772 I have no idea if Yamahaha changed the codes from year to year, but if you have any year 2nd gen, I'd suggest you check your key code just in case it matches (only if you want the key, of course!). Goose
  19. Well I pulled up to the gas pump today and pulled the ignition key opened gas cap and filled tank. Put key back in ignition and key will not turn????? Handlebars are not locked and key works every where else (gas cap and bag locks) any ideas??? Had to load bike on trailer to get it home. Any help would be appreciated
  20. Left work tonight and got about a mile down the road and the bike died, as though it had run out of gas. Tried to restart and it didn't even try to fire. I turned the key off and on and noticed just a single click. Does a mile sound about right if the fuel pump is not working? I tried the key several more times and heard several clicks and was lucky enough to get it started and got home. Is that a typical fuel pump problem? Is there anything else I should check? What about warranty? Thanks Mark
  21. Midnight Venture sighted outside Truman Annex guard shack, Key West Fl. Anyone from here?
  22. The lock on my aftermarket trunk broke again (2nd time) and after paying 35 bucks for the replacement I refuse to buy another POS. Does anybody have a trunk thats toast but the locks still good with key they care to sell? I'm hoping I can improvise it to cover the bolt lock hole and connect with lower section. Any help would be appreciated. God Bless Mike
  23. Noticed the other day my ignition switch was very hot at the end of a ride. When I pulled my key out the key was very hot to the touch. I don’t have passing lamps and have never had this problem. Any thoughts?
  24. This may have been posted here but I am trying to bid on one and I need to know if the ignition switch out of an 84 will fit and 88 venture. I also need to know if I can get the tumblers out of the new switch without the key. There is no key for the switch I am trying to buy and I want to put my old key back in so they are still keyed right.
  25. Hi there, my 2005 Midnight Venture has only a single key supplied with the bike. Can any locksmith replicate mine, or does it need to come from a Yamaha dealer? Thanks, Rob
