1. '88 VR......Is there a good way to install a retaining strap on the saddlebag top cover to hang it, rather than lift it off and set it down? Ideas are welcome...... -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Venture
2. I just finished replacing the stator on my 87 VR. Thank God for the volt meter on the dash, it allowed me to notice that I wasn't getting charging voltage before it was too late, and I rode the bike home on battery power. What a pain this job is! The stator part is typical - remove the cover, replace the stator, deal with the little rubber plugs where the wires go through. But, as has been noted, the screws holding the stator inside the cover are SUPER TIGHT with Loctite. The gasket was like a piece of granite bonded to the cover - very difficult to remove. And finally, there's the little cavity behind it with all the oil leak opportunities. Ya know, behind the cosmetic flange on the bearing cover behind the stator cover? Mine was an oily mess. I found on this fine website that oil can leak from either of the wire plugs in the stator cover, the gear selector switch, the shift shaft, the clutch slave cylinder installation, or the gaskets themselves. And all of these are packed into a tiny area too small to see, much less work in, which was difficult to clean out because my engine was sitting open with two covers removed and I didn't want crap to get in there. There's also 4 wire bundles that go through there, plus a convoluted shifter design with TWO linkage rods, 4 heim joints and a jackshaft! No wonder the shifter on this bike is not the smoothest I've ever used. I was pretty sure my leak was not coming from the clutch cylinder. That left the gaskets, gear switch o-ring, wire bundles and shift shaft as possibilities. I was already replacing the gaskets and redoing the wire bundles. The gear switch o-ring was low-hanging fruit, so I did it. As others reported, I found one of three retaining screws missing and another loose. Re-installed with Loctite. I did not do the shift shaft seal because, frankly, it looks like a total pain to do and I didn't wanna! I am hopeful that the leak was not there. Well, the good news is that it runs great, charges great, but dunno yet about leaks. I installed the hi-output Rick's stator. They don't list it, but I learned about it here; it is in their Hot Shot series. They don't really give any specs on what to expect in terms of increased performance. I can tell you that by 2000 rpm it's generating 14.75 volts at the battery, even with the driving lights on (stock regulator). Even by 1500 rpm with the driving lights and heated grips on it's getting up over 13V, where charging is starting to happen as opposed to battery drain. I never drive it below 2000 rpm except idling at signals. I don't have any "before" data to compare it to, but my impression is that I am getting more charge at lower rpms. I know that before, if I had my driving lights and heated grips on and was running around town I would gradually deplete the battery. Thanks to all who have contributed to stator and oil leak info on this site. That info makes all the difference when doing the job. Happy New Year, Jeremy
3. Ok folks here's the deal. Back in November I purchased a trike from Integrity cycles of Columbus Ohio. I bought it over the phone relying on the name of the business and taking their word that it was a good machine. (that was obviously my first mistake). JerryM was kind enough to go to the dealer to check it out for me. They only let him test drive in their back lot (seems suspicious) but he said it seems to be a good buy, so I sent him my card and he went and bought it for me. A few days later I flew out and JerryM was kind enough to pick me up at the airport, feed me dinner and put me up for the night. He and his family were the best part of this ordeal. Thanks again to gerry, debbie and nikki. When I left the next morning I stopped and filled up then i hit the road. After I got out of town and up to speed it seemed to run rough and not have much power. I thought maybe i had gotten some bad gas so i threw in a can of sea foam and kept going. Well after the second tank of fuel it still wasn't running right so I stopped at a dealer to have the carb synch checked out and to call Integrity cycles. Now by this time I am half way home. Frank at Integrity said i could either bring it back to have them look at it (by the time I got there they would be closing and I had to be to work the next day) or I could have my local mechanic look at it and if it needed something he would send me a check. Ok good, so I kept heading for home with the assumptiom that he was a man of his word. I took it to my mechanic and he started working on it. Well someone had removed the entire intake system and put on four k&n filters apparently without rejetting the carbs so I took the intake system off my 02 and put it on the 01. Instantly 95% more power and smoother running. Only problem with that is now the clutch is slipping. Again I call Frank at Integrity, he says no problem , have my guy fix it and he will cover the bill. Incidently while I was having the cruise, clutch and running problem fixed Frank was supposed to send the stock exhaust as it now had straight pipes and to adjust the carbs properly it needs the right amount of back pressure and incoming air. I had to buy the intake system, which Frank said he would cover the cost. The agreement was that Frank would cover the cost of fixing the cruise, the running problem (IE the intake system and adjustment) and send the stock mufflers thad never did arrive (supposedly ups lost them) so Frank said to just buy some used ones and he would cover that too. By this time I am starting to lose faith in him but he said to fax him all my receipts and he will send me a check to the tune of over $850 and I forgot to send him the receipt for the mufflers so i figured I would just eat that expense if he would just cover the bill so far. So I did as he asked back on jan 6 and still no check and he will not return my calls. Now i dont expect it to pe perfect but it should at least be able to pass the state inspection. Our agreement was that I would cover all the other problems that i found on the way home like the 18" tires that rubbed the fenders. (replacement wheels and tires $650) or the broken odometer reset buttons. (replacement speedometer used $250) or the welded shift rod ($25) or the blown rear speakers ($75) not to mention all the miscellanious nuts and bolts from yamaha and the complete rewire of the backend, and it still needs more. I dont think that it is asking too much of him to just cover the cost of making it street legal. I will cover the rest. Am I being unreasonable? Now Pam in the office there was a pleasure to deal with but obviously Frank is NOT a man of his word. He is supposed to be the man in charge but he apparently does not believe that the word integrity means anything. I think I will send him the defination. Thanks to everyone here for letting me tell my tale and hopefully anyone who goes there is VERY carefull and remember caviet emptor. If on the off chance I ever do see a check from him I will let you all know but right now I am not holding my breath. thanks again Mike
4. I've changed the filter a few time but ya know. When you assemble the spring goes on the shaft between the filter and the magnessium cover to keep the filter tight to the motor right?!! Total brain fart! Pretty sure I'm right:) Tx Brad:fingers-crossed-emo
5. trying to find a cover for my 83 royal. the ones i have seen are high dollar. this is not a show bike. just need a better seat. cant get mine wet as takes forever to dry back out. plus dont like wet backside.
6. Looks like I may need to reinforce the mounting braces..... The good news is the $0.01 XXL cover will cover the sidecar too.
7. How does one repair/replace/fix a ruptured cover for the noise sensing microphone on the VR radio controls? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83, 88 Venture

Learn my lesson today

Had a leaking valve cover gasket dealer said they could do it or I could, if they did it, it would have been cover under warranty, like a idiot I said no I would do it hardest part is remving the tank.... WRONG....All day doing that gasket just putting on and keep in the slot as I installed it was a PITA....Never again it will be at the shop next time.. Never seen one that hard to put on I'm sure there is a trick to it..
9. As you can see in the pictures, I have one more cover to polish. All the covers started out looking like the stator cover. The other covers I started with 220 grit sandpaper, and worked my way up to 800 grit before switching to polishing compounds. The third image is of the stator cover after using paint stripper to remove the old finish. With this one I'm thinking of just using Black Emery polishing compound to clean up the ugly spots first then work on the whole case, working my way up to Red Rouge. I tried this on a couple of spots in the last two pics. I'm using a Dremel Tool with wool polishing wheels. Bill
10. It all started innocently enough. The aluminum crank case covers look bad, so I removed them to polish them up, while I was at sea. I removed the water pump cover, clutch cover, plus the small rear one on the left side (transmission?). I couldn’t get the large front one (stator?) off at the time. While I was waiting for the gaskets to come in, I worked on the large cover. When I finally removed it a small gear fell out. I was able to put it back, hope it isn’t supposed to be in a certain way. I went to remove the screws holding the wires to the cover but no luck. I have the right size screwdriver, but they won’t move. I stopped before I stripped the heads, but I think it won’t take much force before they are striped. What is the easiest way to get these screws out? I can’t get the cover to my workbench, as it is still attached to the bike by the wires. It is free to move around as I try to break the screws free. I tried hammering on the screwdriver while twisting, but was getting nowhere. Help I don't know where to go from here. Bill
11. A few weeks ago I asked the question about what riders are using for a cover for their radar detectors...if you use one. I now have replaced my radar detector cover, and thought I would share this info with you, as well as pictures...and pictures of my new Radiator Protector Screen. Very short story: about 15 years ago I was using a new Valentine One radar detector on my '97 BMW R1100RT. On one of the rides, from Seattle to San Francisco...I am standing on the side of the Insterstate shaking water out of the speaker hole of my new Valentine One...because the lousy windshield of the R11RT directed rain water straight at the radar detector. If it weren't for Valentine's great warranty, I would have just wasted $ 500.00. Valentine took care of me, and from then on I started using a rain cover for my radar detectors. At first it was just the saran wrap style covers they "used" to sell, that were like miniature shower caps. Then about 6 years ago I bought a real neat cover from LegalSpeeding.com, as they sghowed them and sold them at the Seattle Motorcycle Show. I still sued that same cover for 6 straight years, and it worked...perfectly. Even when transferring my detector from one bike to the next, the detector cover always did its' job. When I decided to put my updated Valentine One on my RSMTD, I thought it would be nice to get a new rain cover...sort of as a present for the radar detector. I went shopping for a new cover, but LegalSpeeding.com no longer carried the same cover. The one they sell now is large, bulky, and butt ugly. I did a thorough search, and found that the one I wanted was sold by the manufacturer out of New Zealand. Currently, there were NO distributors in the USA. I asked a supplier of Long Distance...IronButt rider products if he would start selling these covers. He agreed, and now they are again available to us...at a much lower price. I got my new cover, and again...I love it. It is a thin clear plastic, that snaps together like a tupperware product. It has one hole in the area of the powercord, to allow hook-up of the cord. I can tell you thast this thing is 100 % waterproof, and my previous one that lasted 6 or more years, also lasted through more than 350,000 miles of hard riding. If you are interested, go to: http://www.sampson-sporttouring.com/radar_detector_weatherproof_covers.html Here are some pictures of mine, installed on the bike: As the guys website shows, they have these covers for several models of radar detectors. My point folks...is IF you use a radar detector, these covers will save you LOTS of money by protecting your detector from rain or other elements. Secondly, here are pictures of my new Radiator Protection Screen: I made this myself. It cost me less than $ 13.00. It is made out of a balck painted piece of 2' x 2' sheet metal that I bought from Home Depot. It is very easy to cut to size, fold a bit here and there, and then is attached at one point only, at the very top. I love it, and it does a great job of protecting my radiator. Thanks, Miles
12. hey all ok leaking clutch fluid from what i can see looks like it coming from hose seal where it attaches to slave valve or valve it self. dont want to take off gear cover yet cause im not sure if there is a gasket on that and i dont have one to put back on if i go to get parts . guess what im getting to is is it a big deal to pop that cover just to see whats going on or just get all parts first then do job. and who has least expensive hose and push valve . ill most likely just change everything any while im in there.
13. still havent found one, who knew this would be the rarest part of the venture if anyone know where there is one or has one for sale let me know please, i also need the chrome rack for it
14. Anyone familar with this gauge and know if anyone that has mounted to a 2nd gen rsv? It seems to cover everything i want, tach, temp and accurate speed.
15. I have the Chatter Box system with the open helmet mike. I got tired of having to replace the foam covers because they either got lost or got chewed up for opening and closing my modular helmet. I ordered the mike cover for a full face but it didn't fit the open helmet mike. I finally got fed up and made my own mike cover. I made the talk into side red so I know which side to turn towards my mouth and I made they other side black so it would kind of blend it the helmet. The black side is elastic material and the red side is a shear polyester material. Here is what it looks like. Ride Happy, Ride Safe
16. i need a right hand saddle bag cover missing on my venture, its a the brown cover with the chrome rack on it, any of you have one your willing to sell?
17. G'day All I'm looking for a right side cover grill. Half the louvres on mine have fallen off ! If anyone has one for sale please quote price and shipping to Australia. Thanks Jim O'D........
18. does anyone have for sale/trade a left side fairing cover for an MK1 standard? i removed radio and cassette. sorry, Earl got cassette, but i have the radio. also, i imagine the pocket is different also. i would like one in original condition, no cut-outs.
19. Did somebody had the problem I have right now. I cannot close the cover of the cassette receptacle. Any suggestions?
20. Wife and I are going out of town this weekend for our longest ride yet. I think I'd like to at least get myself a lambskin or sheepskin seat cover for the ride. It's kind of late in the week though. So what would you folks suggest for a 2006 RSTD that I may be able to have shipped to me by Friday? (anything on amazon would be preferred because I've got an amazon prime membership so get free 2 day shipping) Thanks!
21. My question is...how many of you riders use a Radar Detector on your bikes? And secondly...do you use a Radar Detector COVER on it, to protect it from the weather? I am NOT looking for opinions as to which detector to use, and which cover is best. I simply would like to ask...do you use a radar detector, and if so...do you have a cover for it, OTHER than a plastic ziplock baggy. I mean....a real world custom made...serious duty cover made to protect your $ 400.00 + radar detector???? I am going somewhere with this, so I ask you to please just bear this out, and let's see what the numbers are. If you want...go to the VR poll pages, and answer there.
22. not sure i just dont no if the valve seats are hardened can anyone help me out with this i pulled off the side cover it says use leaded fuel
23. I plan on using permatex to seal the stator cover up along with using a new stator cover gasket, and I need to make sure those rubber peices where the wires run through are also sealed good. What kind of Permatex should I be using? Theres like... all these flavors!
24. Disregard this post...... upon further inspection i figured out how the cover was mounted.... MY 2007 Midnight RSTD has developed a "Buzzing" sound at high idle and 'at speed' - the noise is coming from the left lower fork cover. this cover has a little movement (the other side is solid) in it causing the buzzing.....i can temporarily fix it by simply pushing on the cover to stop the noise but eventually it starts all over again. I looked at my service manual to see if i could understand how this cover is secured, but the info isn't detailed enough to figure it out. I know we have some very knowledgeable members out there and hope one of you can offer advice. The incessant buzzing going down the road is ANNOYING !! Help ........ Buz
